Site Update: February 9, 2012

Thu Feb 9, 2012, 7:17 PM

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes that have been made, including new features and bug fixes. In the "Your Feedback" section, you'll find suggestions and known issues that were brought up by members in the last Site Update.

Change Log

General

:bug: Bug Fixes
  • Fixed a problem where some would be redirected to their Sta.sh when editing an old Journal. - Fixed by $kemayo
  • When viewing Journals on member profiles and Group profiles, the "More Entries" button sends you to the next entries rather than the ones you just saw. - Fixed by $Nodren
  • On the Groups Portal, the "Read More" button on Group descriptions no longer displays if there's nothing "more" to "read." - Fixed by $Nodren
  • Fixed layout issues with the Channels page. - Fixed by $allixsenos
  • Tweaked the Message Center layout so that long titles and a narrow browser window now play nice. - Fixed by $allixsenos
  • Fixed multiple issues that sometimes caused modal windows to have an ugly white background. - Fixed by #ArtBIT
  • Fixed a bug where some people couldn't switch out of the mobile version of deviantART. - Fixed by $helloandre
  • Fixed an issue with Collections where dragging thumbs into newly created folders was not registering without a page refresh. - Fixed by $helloandre
  • After an account has been deactivated, members are no longer restricted from signing up with the same email address of their deactivated account. - Fixed by $samshull
  • When browsing on the front page while logged out, the "next" and "previous" navigation buttons now correctly skip over mature content artwork. - Fixed by #ArtBIT
  • Fixed an issue that caused some display errors when dragging and dropping. - Fixed by $helloandre
  • Improved Google Web Font detection for people who make Journal Skins. - Fixed by $kemayo
  • Fixed the category selection button on original Journal submission form. It is no longer slightly cut off. - Fixed by $Alisey
Sta.sh

:bulletblue: What's New
:bug: Bug Fixes
  • Sharing from Sta.sh as a Note now links to the Sta.sh item instead of producing a non-functional :thumb: code. - Fixed by $kouiskas
  • The "paper leaves" of the corners of stacks now show up correctly in Safari and Chrome. - Fixed by $kouiskas
  • Made the button style more consistent on Sta.sh items. - Fixed by $kouiskas
  • Right-clicking the "view" and "submit" buttons on a Sta.sh thumbnail to open a new tab or window now points to the correct URLs. - Fixed by $kouiskas
  • Under some circumstances, members would get the deviantART login modal on Sta.sh, now they always get the Sta.sh one. - Fixed by $adahacker
  • When merging items in Sta.sh, if at least one of the merged items has a non-default stack name, it becomes the name used for the merged item. - Fixed by $aMoniker
  • For a short time, the controls when hovering a selected Sta.sh item weren't wide enough. - Fixed by $aMoniker
  • Banned users now see a proper error page when trying to access Sta.sh. - Fixed by $kouiskas
Sta.sh Writer

:bulletblue: What's New
  • The "Edit in Writer" button is now always available on the top right corner of Journals and Literature created using Sta.sh Writer. - Added by $kemayo
:bug: Bug Fixes
  • Searching twice in the sidebar would result in the second search not updating the set of thumbs. - Fixed by $kemayo
  • Replaced the "empty literature" thumbnail image with a version showing empty text rather than a generic image. - Fixed by $kemayo
  • Bumped the number of thumbs shown in the sidebar to 120 for everything. - Fixed by $kemayo
  • Clicking a Writer document in the Writer sidebar no longer offers to load it as a draft; instead it inserts it as a thumbnail, but the pencil menu on that thumbnail has an "edit draft" option. - Fixed by $inazar
  • Fixed a bug where the pencil menu on images inserted into Writer would not close when changing image size. - Fixed by $Alisey
  • Stack thumbnails on Writer are now even better than last week, because they're not vertically squished now. - Fixed by $Alisey
  • Sta.sh Writer now accepts all YouTube URLs, even if there are extra parameters on the end of the URL. - Fixed by $inazar
  • Dragging on stacks/skin thumbs in the sidebar is suppressed, because letting them get dragged into the writer area resulted in broken images on submit. - Fixed by $inazar
  • The Writer sidebar loading indicator no longer accidentally covers up artwork. - Fixed by $kemayo

Your Feedback

  • The "Friends" dropdown should be sorted by Friends Lists. - From =alpin-j
  • Add the ability to add links in Critiques (for external resources, etc...). - From `ClefairyKid
  • When searching and browsing artwork, add the ability to move to the next and previous pages of results by using the left and right keys. - From =excentricjester
  • Add a "Last Edited" timestamp to Journals. - From =virgino0owhore
  • There should be a "Remove from Favourites" button when browsing Favourites and Collections. - From *digitalkitty in the Suggestions Forum
  • It's not possible for non-Premium Members to reply to a Critique, even if it is their own Critique. Thanks for pointing out, we'll fix this! - From *Wraithldr in the Suggestions Forum
  • Increase the limit of deviations per page in the deviantWATCH section of your Message Center. - From =ArO113
  • Group collapsed comments (hidden and spam) together. - From *psychoplumbers and =MissPinks
  • `LostKitten provided some suggestions for watchers and friends lists: separating Groups from deviants in your friends lists, and consolidating the Watcher, Friends, Groups, and Recent Visitors widgets. See the following mockup:
Watch List by LostKitten

Recurring feedback from previous Site Updates:
  • Some members were frustrated and confused with the listing of groups on the "Submit to Group" modal on deviation pages. Currently, it lists out groups you've frequently submitted to (regardless of if you're still in the group) and groups you're an admin of, but some people suggested that it should just be a straightforward list of groups you're a member or admin of. - From `apocathary, ~Kracov, *Blooper-Love, ~velka, and others
  • On Journal deviation pages, add the "Remove from Messages" option that appears on art deviations. - From ~PerfectDerealization
  • After we added the ability to have "!" characters in deviation titles, some deviants requested other characters (such as & ? * " @ ' [] () ...). - From *PinkLace, *chriseastmids, *ninjatron, ~Alisbet, and others
  • Bring back the functionality where Group admins receive notifications when Group Journals receive new comments.
  • Various upgrades to deviantART's mobile interface, including Sta.sh support, Notes, ability to watch deviants, access to friends lists, etc.
  • Add the ability to browse Journals in your Message Center using the "next" and "previous" buttons like you can with art deviations. - From *xPastxChaserx and others
  • Some members asked that the browser upgrade notice be removed since they couldn't update their browser for various reasons.

:lightbulb:  Discuss These Ideas!

  • Some members have brought up issues with the new deviantID widget. Several people suggested that the artist type was too restrictive and some members didn't want to display "Other" on the header of their profile. One illustrator had a concern with labeling herself has a digital or traditional artist when she was in fact both. A few members didn't like that their username was listed on their deviantID as well as on the top of their profile. What do you think? How could the new deviantID be improved?

Last Week's Idea Discussion

In the previous Site Update, we received some very helpful feedback about the ideas suggested by members of the community.
  • Last week, the comment rating system created some interesting debates among members. People liked the idea of surfacing great comments, especially for Journals and Forums with hundreds and thousands of comments. However, many people had concerns with abuse, ganging up against people, and people not having the ability to voice an unpopular opinion.
  • People suggested many Message Center improvement ideas, many of which pointed to the fact that people are overwhelmed. Some of the suggestions were: Sorting by art category or member, separating Group messages from member messages, realtime updating, setting priority to certain members (for example, your best friends or favorite artists), and watching only certain categories of members and Groups.
  • Some members liked the idea of email notifications for messages and Notes, while others said they check deviantART too often for email notifications to be useful. Some would prefer a digest email. Customization of which message types you receive was requested by multiple members.

This is the Spice Harvester from the novel Dune by Frank Herbert.

The paper model has it's base on the harvester from the movie Dune (1984). The model looks the same as in the movie, but with some little modifications and different textures.

You will find more info in the pdf file of the model. Click Download for the model.

A big THANK YOU! for those at Zealot.com for ALL the support and help. :D

The Spice must flow...

UPDATE: Version 1.1 released
:bulletgreen: Fixed color of a line and moved two flaps.
:bulletgreen: Fixed fremen marking (was upside down).
:bulletblue: Added some missing flaps.
:bulletblue: Added reference images in a new pdf (if you are confused where some parts need to be put)!

EDIT: Picture of the assembled version instead of the 3D model(on this page)!

Hope you enjoy it! :)

Hi everyone,

in the last weeks i worked on a new papercraft model. And here is the outcome! It is Kakashi from the well known anime series "Naruto".

I am very astonished how detailed and original he looks. It is like he just jumped out of my computer screen ^_^

old school craft part 2 :aww:
as i saw this model, it was just a must have for me
i played worms so many times on LAN's and online
and it was always funny :)
even my own worms got bashed over the edge of the world because i throwed the holy grenade to short :D

the model itself is not hard but it got a few bugs in the back
so i just bent it in the way it look good
also the eyes have a little issue
there are two peaks, which i didn't know where i should connect them
so i just cut them away

and yes, the teeth are removable :aww:

the model is a bit small, i prefere to print this out double sized (maybe i build this again too)

again i had to put some weight into the model, otherwise it falls down

you can download the sheets here

-edit-
you're kidding me :omg:
thousand views after that short time :wow:
damn! :D
thank you all people  :tighthug:

This is a tutorial, assuming basic knowledge of Photoshop - showing a quick way of shading and lighting.

This is pretty obvious stuff, but a couple of people have asked me about shade, so I thought I'd do this, plus it was fun :D

Full view.

Hi everyone! This is a tutorial for how to make an embroidery file in Stitch Era Universal (a free embroidery program) in order to machine embroider My Little Pony eyes and cutie marks for plushies.

When I started learning how to do machine embroidery, it was so difficult and I had a lot of trouble figuring out what to do to get good results. Even if you make an embroidery file, it may not translate well to the real world. I thought I could help others figure out embroidery without having so go through so much trouble as I had to. So here is a tutorial that basically follows what I do when I make an embroidery file. I hope it's easy to follow!

Also, before you can start following this tutorial, you'll need an image to use for what you will be embroidering. I use "vector" images of pony eyes and cutie marks. You'll have to remove any color gradients and add a background color so the embroidery software can process it correctly. Sometimes I also create my own image by tracing an picture or screencap in an art program (look up pony vectoring tutorials to learn more about that). Sometimes I also just draw my own image from scratch, like I did for my Ninfia plushie.

I'm not familiar with making tutorials, so bear with me ^_^;;

Old Digimon fanart I did back in 2007. I used watercolor and black markers for the lines.
The materials were not a very clever idea in my opinion, I would recommend you a gel pen instead of a freaking sharpie XD But yeah, I was just starting to use more professional supplies. I still like this drawing either way ^^

Papercraft
:iconithor:
Collection by
Hello everyone,
I think I got a bit addictive to Iron Man models... maybe too much.

I struggled around if I want to start such a project and even what kind of model I should choose. But after reading a few therpf.com articles about it, it seems to be the right step.
I want to build a life-sized, painted helmet of the Iron Man Mark III armor. There are a lot of people out there, who rule this topic, but maybe it is the chance for me to evolve new techniques or stuff like that...

Papercrafting is only the first step in this project. I will add fiberglass layers inside and filler outside to give the helmet a sturdy and smooth look.

If you want to follow this new project, you should visit my Facebook page. You will find the album there and of course updates of my progress.
Stay tuned if you like!

Hello Bioshockers!
After all the nice feedback for Undertow i was hyped to build the next vigor of the series.
Here comes Murder of Crows!

I used the original model and texture files to create a lifesized (22cm high) copy of the games vigor.
The bottles plug is of course removable.

After many, many requests, here are the (HUGE!) PDOs with the HR textures. Now you do not need the High Res designer to view them.

Download HEAD
Download BODY
Download RIGHT WING
Download LEFT WING
Download HEAD
Download ROCK

ALL CREDIT FOR THE PDO GOES TO DaiShiHUN

DaiShiHun's Frost Dragon daishihun.deviantart.com/art/S... has been on my "defininite to-do-list" ever since it got released. Yet with 30 pages and over 900 parts it was always quite deterrent.

Nevertheless, as the winter days were cold and boring, I asked my GF is she would be up to a big project that would take a couple of weeks. As we agreed to build it there was one big flaw that bothered me about the dragon: Its textures.

Although split in various parts, the 1024 textures were mushy, grey, dull and boring. They looked nothing like the shiny, crisp Frost dragons you see in the game. If I were to build this dragon, it ought to look awesome. So I got my hands on the High Res dev version of Pepakura that supports 4096p textures, grabbed a 8192x4096 texture from a HR dragon texture mod from the Skyrim nexus, added transparency features like translucent wings and some shadows that I got from a prebaked texture.

Besides looking more like the original dragon and being much crisper, the textures had another advantage: They were very economical in tint, only using black and a slight cyan tint.

I also retextured the rock to fit a snowy setting and tipped it off with a mixture of decorative sugar and baby powder.

I printed the Legs and wings on 140g/sqm semi-glossy and the body and head on 120g/sqm high glossy photo paper.

The assembly is far from perfect and took about 5-6 weeks. The model is held up by a wire pinched through the tail and leading to the rock.

I finished it today and thought I'd make a little photoshooting in front of an improvised greenscreen to edit the pictures with some in-game Skyrim screenshots.

I will be uploading some unedited photos later, unfortunately I only have a cheap digital camera available.

There are several reasons why I wanted to make a papercraft LEGO Star Wars Luke Skywalker minifig:

One: I'm a big Star Wars fan ;o)

And two: I could use the silver/mirror metallic cardstock I found some time ago to make the hilt of Luke's lightsaber exactly like the "chrome silver" version of the 7140 LEGO set! (the trans-cyan blade I made using a printable transparancy sheet)

Once I've made the final build of the helmet too, paper minifig Luke will be finished, and once I've finished the instructions, I'll upload the parts and instructions to my papercraft webpage again.

Stay tuned: [link] !

3 years after i did my [link] it's about time i do another alphaleo's bike art. i started around end of 2007 and i did posed the line art and WIP on my last few uploads and after 6 months on and off i finally managed to get it finished.

The biggest achievement i had this time is painting the tire's knots, i have to admit it was the most boring process, even with the magical 'copy and paste' function, it's still proves to tiring and boring. And it's a good thing i still remember to paint all the effects like my previous bike art but with twice among of the details this time. overall i'm glad how the final finishing come out, 6 months of hard work paid off.

Yeah! love the bike, GT Marathon carbon. It's the next Generation GT i-drive bike, with a full group set of the new Shimano XTR, Fox suspension and love the new white GT jersey. I roughly estimate it's overall bike weight is around 24 pound, price wise......forget it........ i don't think i can even afford it, i can only wished in my dream riding it.

lastly, Jetix project was finally done! another achievement to be added up to my portfolio.

Some minor updates, i rework the eyes that some people commented it's too flat, and some logo changes.

This is one of my most popular wolf masks. Based on the Japanese video game called "Okami", this is a depiction of the goddess Amaterasu as a wolf.

I designed this years ago but the pictures, I have come to realize, are dismal. So, I made a New Okami mask and took ~much~ better pictures today. Quite happy with the way they turned out.

The mask is carved out of 8oz leather, shaped by hand, and painted with Liquitex acrylics. Available in my Etsy shop only: [link]
