Announcing oEmbed API Support on deviantARTEmbedding deviantART Media in Your Applications Made EasyMore Like This
One of the most frequent activities in social applications is link sharing. Wouldn't it be nice if your application could display an image thumbnail or some info from the linked resource? Normally developers would use clunky proprietary APIs, if those are available at all, or resort to screen scraping the pages to extract bits and pieces of information. And they’d have to do it differently for each service. Needless to say it's a hassle.
oEmbed solves this common problem nicely.
oEmbed is a format for allowing an embedded representation of a URL on third party sites. The simple API allows a website to display embedded content (such as photos or videos) when a user posts a link to that resource, without having to parse the resource directly. Many large services such as YouTube, Flickr, Hulu, Vimeo, Viddler, Qik, MyOpera, and now deviantART support this API. How to View your Favorites as a ScreensaverIf you're like me, you have some favorites. OK, a lot of favorites. Wouldn't it be cool if you could view all that neat art as a screensaver, without having to download it all?More Like This
Thanks to our awesome Devs here on Deviantart and a free app from Google, you can! As it turns out, your "favorites" gallery (or any album / gallery, for that matter) has a "media RSS" feed that can be accessed by Google Photos Screensaver for XP/Vista.
Here's what you do:
1) Get Google Photos Screensaver here: http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html (make sure that the screensaver and picasa are both checked) Picasa is optional, but makes the screensaver look a lot nicer for some reason. (If you're not comfortable clicking the link here, just google the phrase "google pack" )
2) Open your Screensaver Panel (Right Click the desktop -> Properties -> "Screen Saver" Tab) and select Google Photos Screensaver.
Unique Character Design TipsMore Like This
In my opinion, these are the most important factors in any character design: color, concept, shape, simplicity, cohesiveness, repeatability, personality and uniqueness.
Color: Any design with colors all over the place creates too many places for the eye to look. Keep your color design very simple and zen. Looking at the colors shouldn't be jarring or confusing. This isn't to say only use one color, not at all, but try to make sure the ones you use are harmonious. Avoid mixing and matching different saturations of the same color or picking colors that clash with one another.
My rule of thumb: Stick to no more than three base colors and some value variations.
Concept: Your design should have inspiration, even if the inspiration is just your intended character's personality or an interesting object that represents them. Your character could be a bookworm, and that would impact her posture, her clothing, her hairstyle...pretty much everything about her! You can design
