Sunrise at Moraine Lake, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. This lake has been shot over and over, but this composition is a little different. The popular spot is to the left of this shot, with the trees framing the lake, but I liked this spot, cuz it allows you to see more of the reflections of the mountains. Also, the typical shot is with light falling on the mountains, but then you lose the cool pink colors in the sky too, so this is a little different. Enjoy!

On my last day in the Banff Region, Kevin McNeal and I sped-shot several locations for sunrise in Kananaskis Country. From scouting the area the day before, we felt Wedge Pond would be the coolest spot for sunrise. So we camped in the parking lot for the night and woke up at sunrise for this shot. We didn't get much of a sky, but we got some cool mist on the water and a brilliant orange light on the mountain peaks. All in all, I enjoyed it. An amazing trip I'll never forget for sure. Enjoy and God Bless!

The Badwater Basin in Death Valley. Usually at this time of year there is no water and you get these cool shapes out in the dried up lake bed from the salt deposits, but this year due to recent rains, the area was covered in 3-5 inches of standing water. It was actually a blessing because there was a mind-blowing sunset and the super still reflections made everything look like a mirror. I was about 200 feet away from shore, out in the middle of the water with my waterproof hiking boots. It was so cool. This sunset was one of the best I've ever seen, and to see it in this kind of location was truly a blessing.

This is Mesa Arch. We had to wake up at 4am to get to this spot before all the other photographers. It's only about 30 feet wide and everyone was overlapping their tripods to get a spot. It was kinda crazy. An amazing spot for sure.

This was super hard to process, so I ended up doing an HDR of 3 bracketed exposures here. I tried to keep it as realistic looking as possible and I think it came out well.

As always, I hope you enjoy viewing it as much as I did taking it.

Dolomites, Italy
Autumn 2012

After numerous arduous hikes during the last 4 weeks I'm proud to present a lot of new work. I traveled through the Eastern Alps: from Switzerland to South Tyrol and the Dolomites to Slovenia. I'll upload them here on DA during the next days. Part two of my Alp series 2012 contains the images from northern Italy. Where I shot the Stelvio National Park and the UNESCCO World Heritage Site Dolomites. At the middle of October the autumn was on it's peak and after some heavy snowfall till the valleys the landscape presents winterly. English descriptions and more shoots will follow soon!

The workshop group took an aerial flight to finish the trip. I wanted to fly over Langisjor, a really remote location that very few people ever visit. Next year I will be taking a workshop backpacking along the ridge on the opposite side of the lake.

Several months ago, I posted a similar shot from this morning that I took with my Nikon.  Well, here's a scan of my favorite slide from this morning (and one of my favorites of the year).  As you can see, I got some really nice light on this August morning.  I'd love to get back here at some point in September with the aspens turning yellow and some snow on the peak, but I certainly can't complain about the beauty of the San Juans in the summer.

First photograph of a series of shots taken wandering through the Dolomites, with very tight schedule and at the most insane hours of the day.

Here, under the imposing walls of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen), some people had lit a big fire for the night... which, in due distance, filled with magic the entire landscape, somehow I've just felt to be back to the stone age :-)

The night light comes from the moon (73%, risen on the east at 9:05 pm), appearing and disappearing among thick clouds.

This is a sunset view from the caves of the " Puy de Cliersou " in the volcanoes park. The reddish last lights illuminated the entrance of the cave almost like if it was painted.

This image is a manual exposure blending to deal with the high contrast between the different parts of the scene.

Another photo I took from this place (just above) a little more than one year ago :

This might be my favorite image so far of 2012.

I love the way the image came out but the experience is what puts it at or near the top of the list.

I was deep in this canyon for most of the day but I could see the wispy clouds hanging high in the atmosphere, I was trying to think of a shot where I could capitalize on the color of the clouds even down in the canyon. A friend of mine had taken a shot here during mid-day on his trip into the canyon a year prior and earlier in the day I noticed how the light was hitting under this enormous cliff. I came back to the spot at sunset, and right on cue the sky lit up, illuminating the underside of this staggering cliff with soft light providing the unique conditions for the image I was hoping for.

There is something about a place where all you hear is the water running over rocks, the wind in the trees and birds flying from branch to branch.
Someplace to sit and watch the water bugs skitter across the surface in the stillness.
A place to watch the sun glisten off the water as it rises through the trees.

Someplace to just be.

Imagine you are in this scene right now,
there's nothing else around you but the
soothing sound of water travelling
through the air to your eardrums

Close your eyes and picture a world
where nothing else has to exist
There's no such thing as rumors
or drama or "reality"

All there is, is you and this place.
It doesn't matter where this place is located,
it doesn't matter who you are or who you're
trying to become

All that matters is that you're here, in this
world, in a place where everything just slips
away

And all you can hear are the sounds of nature
No screaming children or
Honking cars
No neighbors yelling or
Cats hissing

Just silence.
Soothing and safe silence.
Where Nature is wrapping her healing
fingers around your heart and mending
the edged cracks

She takes you by the hands and brings you
closer to your dreams, without your physical
body moving an inch in this "reality"

This place is here for you,
no matter when or no matter what
Just close your eyes and listen
Because some place...

...is waiting for you to return...

Breidavik
Iceland

This is an image which I have re-edited following the 2009 trip to Iceland. It's always an interesting exercise to revisit old favourites and update the 'look' of the image to current perceptions. I think one's pereceptions of scenes also changes depending on the tools you know you possess in order to give images their final result. This was taken on a day with dramatic shifting light but somehow, back in 2009, the original edit didn't do it justice. I hope this version does!

I just got back from a trip to the Lofoten Islands in Norway. This was taken during one of the mornings of a small jetty in a little bay, using the Lee Big Stopper and Lee ND Grad filters. I still have a lot of photos to start going through and processing, but I think this was one of my favourite shots from the trip, and the type of shot I've been wanting to take for a long time.
