In Ancient Japan, there was a young fox who only had one tail. His siblings all had four or more and his parents themselves had nine tails. He felt left out and lonely sometimes. One day, he decided that he was going to earn his tails the hard way. But he didn't know how to do it.
The fox journeyed to the wisest creature he knew: Shinyu, the guardian dragon of the nearby river. The fox approached Shinyu and bowed, his nose touching the velvety green grass. "Rise, young fox," Shinyu said in a low, rumbling voice. He was a large dragon with a long, slim body and talons for feet. His scales were the color of the ocean and his eyes were a startling green. The fox did as he was bidden and sat down, curling his tail around his paws. "What would you desire of me?" Shinyu asked.
