Having been thinking a lot about the origins of our globally held Dragon mythos in a recent article Reptilicus Infernicus, I couldn’t help but notice the Cthulhu legend was always lurking at the edges of my mind as I was researching the subject matter.
The Enemy at the Gates, the “Other”, forever lurking in the darkness and plotting an invasion most evil and an enslavement most hideous, is probably the original seminal “narrative” that was born when humans first acq

t seems there’s nothing quite as dear to the hearts of many of our deviants as their production of fan art, and at the same time, there is nothing so knotted with legal and ethical headaches. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but in the form of fan art it has also become one of the most frustratingly complicated. At some point, the sheer volume of fan art around a single property may become so large that the issue rises to another level of scrutiny by the creators of the original work.
With this dynamic in mind, we thought the following panel that Josh Wattles, our Advisor In Chief here at deviantART, and a mystery guest named Harold Smith, gave at Comic Con this year might be of immense help in understanding the ever evolving elements of fan art

One Year Ago...5/20/2013 was one of the worst days in Oklahoma history when a destructive F-5 tornado basically went right down the middle of our town. I remember the day vividly...dentist appointment in the morning, then meeting with the creatives director of my church for the first time to discuss the storybooks and banners I'd do for the children's ministry, then when I got back to the insurance office that early afternoon, everything just started getting darker and darker. We shut the office down early and got to our houses. Once I got home, the tornado was already on the ground in Newcastle (about 13 miles away). Since my parents were the only ones with a storm shelter, and they lived about a mile away, I went to their house, driving through my neighborhood, 15 minutes before the tornado drudged through it. When we were huddled in the shelter, we could hear it coming closer. It sounded exactly like everyone on camera always described it...a freight train. One Year Ago... in Personal More Like This

No, I'm not going to do a note page on it. It doesn't deserve it. It's below being worth a review. Besides I don't think I could review this thing, if for no other reason than the nudity. Considering that one of the themes in one of these shorts is child pornography I don't even know if this thing is legal to own. Literally, the best thing that I can say about this movie is that it's animated worse than PlayStation 1 cutscene. The people who told me that this movie was made to shock were wrong. The creator's own commentary considers this movie to be a comedy and I do not want to meet this person as long as I live.
The first short starts off with a dog with red eyes telling a kid that he has to kill his unborn brother because he's the antichrist because something about breast milk only being good for the first child. Afterwards i
Bad Critical TechniquesWhen you have any sort of following, on the internet or otherwise, you tend to become very adverse to criticism. In general, most criticism you get are trolls or an echo-chamber. And real, honest critics towards your work can seem exactly like one of those two groups. If they're harsh, it's easy to see them as a troll. If they're lenient, it's easy to see them as a part of the echo-chamber. Now there are certain ways to decide what's valid and what's invalid and here are some things that I've found will lead to destructive criticism. Keep in mind "everything you do is awesome!" is as much destructive criticism as "everything you do is crap." Keep in mind that this is very much a "do as I say, not as I do" journal, because I've learned a lot. Sometimes it takes people punching you in the face to realize that punching people in the face is wrong. But no (good) feedback should contain any of these "techniques." All of these are examples of destructive criticism.Bad Critical Techniques in Personal More Like This

He's admitted in the comments that I'm the one he's referring to. A Brief History of the Animation Age GhettoSo, one of the most common preconceptions of animation is that it's only for kids. Or, if you get especially lucky with a person who isn't all that versed in the medium it becomes "animation is only for kids, unless it's like South Park." Obviously this isn't true. The only time it may have been true is in the 70's, and that's why I'm bringing this up now. But I suppose you're probably wondering how this came to be. I mean, it's such an odd thing, right? The medium started out generally being for everyone. Anyone could go down to a theater and watch animation, regardless of age. Animators did generally what they wanted and people of all ages enjoyed things like Felix the Cat or Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I mean occasionally you'd get something more geared towards adults, or something more geared towards children. But it doesn't explain why I need to clarify something like Mary & Max may not be appropriate for some children. Writing Tips - Cliffhangers (Don't Use 'Em)So how do you use the proverbial cliffhanger in your creative work? You don't. Ever. Seriously, don't use cliff-angers. That may seem a little blunt, but there's no trope that's abused and misused as a cliff-hanger and when done wrong (as are 95% of them) there is no trope that causes as much ire and anguish. Personally I think that there is only one scenario where you can use a cliffhanger: at the end of a chapter of a novel THAT YOU INTEND TO FINISH. Do not use a cliffhanger in a movie, even if it's Part 2 of an intended trilogy. Do not use it at the end of a television episode, unless it is a two parter and the second part has already been made and slated to air. I know it seems counter-intuitive for an informative piece on a creative medium to say that you shouldn't flat out use something, but the "cliffhanger" needs to die in all but literature, and even then it's situational. It's the creative equivalent to the lobotomy.Writing Tips - Cliffhangers (Don't Use 'Em) in Personal More Like This

Red has more personal associations than any other color. Recognized as a stimulant, red is inherently exciting. Red draws attention, so a keen use of red as an accent can immediately focus attention on a particular element. (shout out to extroverted people, that's your color (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*)

My New Cure For ArtblockSo I've decided on making my personal cure for artblock. It may not work for everyone that decides to try it themselves, but hey, it works for me at least. My New Cure For Artblock in Personal More Like This
Basically what my cure is that if I can't get my ideas down on paper, I simply just stop pushing myself to do it, take some time to relax, and draw something else. But I usually try and draw something more simplistic and easy to avoid burning out my brain. This helps you slowly get you back into the drawing mood and therefore enhancing your focus somewhat. After that, you can either take another load off or if you really wish to, go back to what drawing you started on. However if you still can't get it on paper, try rethinking your idea or just think of something else altogether. Don't try to feel like its the end of the world especially, as it's only one drawing.
So that pretty much wraps up my personal cure on artblock, if you have any thoughts on this cure, let me know in the comments below ^^
