A Pop Culture Interpretation of The Supernatural
Every culture around the world created gods and other mythical beings by mixing and matching fanged and taloned animal parts—e.g., enormous eagle heads on lions’ bodies—human beings have always seemed to need to believe there are powerful and usually quite vengeful supernatural beings lurking just beyond the candlelight.
Supernatural beings come to serve several purposes:
They kept people on the lighted path of truth and goodness, fearful of exploring beyond;
They were a reminder of the punishment we deser

All that was thought to be good had been twisted to the evil purpose of a global war. A global sense of hopefulness was replaced with a global sense of fear and loathing.

On the day of your birth, you were likely surrounded by those who loved you, who would lead you through the rough first scary years of life, and who would stand by as you grew into a capable person. As time passed, others may have drifted into your life, and even if you didn't know it, they also nurtured and cared for you in much the same way, helping to shape the person you would become.
When a community like deviantART is born, the same common thread binds its originators and founding members together. Over the years, more and more creative beings drift into its life and strengthen its core every single day, resulting in an exponentially inspirational powerhouse for the sheer fact that they've become a part of it. That nurturing spirit, that inherent support system, that caring community inspires deviantART to grow, and it comes from inside each and every one of you.

Mentions are a new, highly requested feature that makes engaging friends and artists in conversation more dynamic than ever before.
What is a Mention?
A Mention is when a deviant’s username, icon, or artwork is included in a comment or Journal. Mentions create links to the deviants or artwork you include, allowing you to highlight artists and engage deviants with ease.
Links to pages on deviantART can quickly be distinguished by their bold, dark-blue color, while external links are darker and have an arrow indicating you are leaving deviantART.
Deviants you mention are notified in the new Mentions section of the Message Center, making engaging and involving others in conversation a simple, hassle-free experience.

New Username Symbols: Extended ThoughtsTwo weeks ago, we released two new products – deviant and art Mentions and new username symbols. Gratefully, and as we'd hoped, many deviants are embracing these changes in exactly the ways we'd anticipated, and the ways we ourselves did over the past several months of testing. While some deviants embraced the changes, it's fair to say that others have felt surprise, curiosity, and maybe even shock. These feelings are totally normal, but for the large part, there's a hope present. A positive outlook. The first steps in a new era that makes the way for our goals in the future, and, at the same time, removes clutter and confusion that new deviants often experience.New Username Symbols: Extended Thoughts in Personal More Like This

A word from Heidi:
Over the years, a few things have come to seem like deviantART mainstays. Deviant green, intricate art categorization, colorful avatars, symbols next to usernames. In our constant re-evaluation of what's best for longtime deviants and new users alike, we do sometimes need to stop and ask ourselves if a makeover for some aspect isn't overdue. Changing username symbols was one of the harder things we evaluated.

Introducing thoughtART Technology
A few years ago, deviantART teamed up with several university laboratories across the United States, and we are proud to finally announce the fruits of our efforts. Thanks to recent advancements in neurological science, we're unveiling a revolutionary new platform in artistic creation. Our device uses touch-sensitive pads built into your existing keyboard and mouse to monitor your brainwaves and transmit them directly to our site. Excited? Welcome to the new age of thoughtART Technology!

It's back! With the goal of bringing a little cheer to patients in the hospital during the holiday season, the deviantART Holiday Card Project connects deviants from around the world and applies their tremendous artistic abilities in designing and creating uplifting holiday cards.
In past years, the Project has received more than 5,000 cards sent in by more than 1,000 deviants from 50 different countries/political regions. Cards were then divvied up and distributed in-person by deviantART members to local Los Angeles hospitals, with additional cards given to various hospitals in the U.S. and abroad for hospital staff members to hand out to patients.
The idea behind the Holiday Card Project is simple: do something nice for others. However, if you're looking for even more incentive, every deviant who submits a card will be given a free one-month Premium Membership to deviantA

The Holiday Card Project returned in 2013, and it was a total hit! We received over 5,000 cards from 2,000 deviants in more than 60 different countries! A ton of deviants reached out to us, interested in helping to distribute cards to their local hospitals! With these volunteers' help, we distributed cards to 22 hospitals in the US and abroad!
The majority of the hospitals we worked with distributed the cards themselves, either through their own volunteers or by placing cards on the food trays of patients. We received letters of thanks from some hospitals, and a few even shared our cards on their Facebook pages! One thing all of the hospitals and patients had in common: they loved your cards!
One of our biggest surprises this year came from Bank of America! A deviant who works there got word of our project and told some people around the cor

Last week we set out to prank deviants by introducing a new and completely fake technology: thoughtART! With some hard work and a little magic from dT, thoughtART came to life.
The Idea Behind The Technology
For this project, we were inspired by the advanced technology in "Her," a movie about a new artificially intelligent operating system. After a ton of discussions, we decided to introduce a new piece of technology that can sync with deviants' brainwaves to search for or create art. In actuality, a drawing was selected at random from a group of deviations created beforehand by deviantART staff members using deviantART muro. When users saw the art being created with their minds, they were actually watching deviantART muro redraw the artwork.

Many years ago, we expanded the pageview counter to include not just the front page of your Profile, but also the Journals tab and the Prints tab (but not individual Journals or Prints). We mistakenly never expanded the count to other areas of the Profile.

IdolizationIdolization is a strange and dangerous thing.Idolization in Deviant Events More Like This
Yet we all do it. Either aware or unaware.
It all starts when we see an artist here whose work we like a lot.
Most of us have been there. Seeing the work of an artists that hits a soft spot in you, for whatever reason that might be.
You admire it, but at the same time you feel sad because you realize your level is still miles away from this artist, and you will probably never be able to do the same.
But despite everything, you start following this person. And you keep following him.
Because somewhere deep in your soul, you hold the believe --or rather, hope-- that when you watch it long enough, it will reveal it's tricks.
That it will inspire you in some way. And that you'll be able to do the same.
Unconsciously, we all build images of our idol.
It's human nature, I guess. We fill in all the blanks. The things that we don't know from this person.
Because an idol isn't a person anymore at that point. It has become an ico

I just came by your profile and saw your art, and was very impressed. I think you have a very nice art style. Now I'm working on this project. It's called <project>. It's an awesome story about <subject>. I'm currently writing the script for it, but I'm planning to make a visual novel. I can't tell too much about the story, since I don't want it to be copied, but it's going to be really cool. The point is; I need illustrators. I'm an excellent writer, but I can't do illustration at all. And therefore, I wanted to ask for your help. I need about 60 pages illustrated and colored. Would you work together with me on this one? I don't have any money to spend, as I'm not an established writer yet. But when the visual novel gets published, you can get a percentage of my profit.

I don't know if it's okay to send a note, I don't want to bother you. You faved my artwork, and I just wanted to thank you for that. I just saw your profile and I wanted to say: you are an AMAZING artist and great with story lines. Amazing talent. It's an honor to meet someone like you. I do a lot of art myself, but I'm nowhere as good as you are. I honestly don't know why a great artist like you faved my work. I don't think I'm worth the attention, since you're a way better artist than I'll ever be. But thanks a lot.
Honestly... the amount of comments I get like this nowadays is high.
And although I have to admit the whole I-like-your-art-thing is kinda flattering, it somehow still makes me sad.

How art tutoring should be nowadaysYes. Another one of my rants that starts with a personal experience. How art tutoring should be nowadays in Deviant Events More Like This
It was a day like any other, and I was just surfing DeviantArt, browsing the many deviations in my inbox. While I did so, my eye wandered to something that was called an 'tutorial on manga anatomy'. As usual, I was curious about the content. And as the preview image was pretty small, I wanted to check this out. It seems like this girl, let's name her Abbey (it's not her real name, but I think calling her 'that girl' is so damn confusing) had made a tutorial on male manga anatomy. Nothing wrong with that, you'd say. But I've been following Abbey for a while already. I originally met her in the forums, asking for feedback on one of her fanart drawings. Mostly anatomy related stuff. I gave her some tips. We talked a bit. And I followed her soon after, as I thought her art looked pretty promising altogether.
Now, I didn't know Abbey in real life. But she was a beginning artist, nowhere towards a level
When you want to quit art, think about this...I think most of us had it at some point. A moment in which we felt sad about our art. It might have been a full developed artblock, or just a small moment of hopelessness, perhaps questioning our artistic career, asking yourself "Why did I actually start doing this?".When you want to quit art, think about this... in Personal More Like This
Over the years, I've had many moments like that. Most of them triggered by another failed drawing, a total lack of inspiration (while I needed to get creative work done --nothing more annoying than that!), or another harsh critique that was just a bit too much to handle, at that particular moment.
I've had many times that I doubted myself. There have been times when I questioned my creativity in general. Times when I was sad about just another harsh critique, or depressed for being turned down by another group or publisher. Times when I got angry and shouted that I wanted to quit art altogether.
But eventually, I never quit.
The point is... no matter how angry or sad I am, it always takes me a while to calm down and
Conquer your artblockI think every artist out here has experienced it at least one time in their career: the so called artblock. A moment of total lack of inspiration that suddenly hits you, and leaves you unable to create. Most often the solution is to just wait. Most artblocks will solve automatically with time. But there are circumstances in which an artblock doesn't automatically disappear, or when you have deadlines to catch. In that case, you might be helped by some basic tips to conquer your artblock.Conquer your artblock in Deviant Events More Like This
Over the years, I've experienced an artblock (or writersblock, as they call it for fiction writers) many, many times. Most of them were short, but the longest lasted over 2 years. Most of them solved on their own. But sometimes I just needed that little bit of extra help. Therefore, I made a list with a few tips and tricks to make your artblock go away. Hopefully it'll help you as well as it did me.

Most artblocks come from fear. The fear of not being able to
ImprovementOver the years, many people have asked me for how long I've been drawing. While it's true that I started drawing as soon as I was able to hold a pencil, I was never that serious about it. In a sense, you can ask yourself if I was any serious on art altogether. Because, in the end, all kids draw. I think most people can remember making drawings in grade school. Because it's something kids do naturally. Depicting the world around them with images. The beautiful thing is that kids have no fear. They just draw whatever they like, and are usually happy with it. It isn't until the age of 10 or 12, that the outside world suddenly expects you to be either good at something, or stop doing it. It's at that age that we become self cautious about drawing. And therefore it's around that age many kids eventually stop drawing.Improvement in Deviant Events More Like This

White knightsI haven't spend much time on my computer last weekend, but enough to see that DeviantArt was kept busy by a troll that apparently did really well for as much as trolls can 'do well' on the internet. A little over 4000 pageviews in just 4 days the account is online proved not only the artists involved in the matter took offense... but apparently a lot of other DeviantArt members as well. Give up on being a mangaka -- or hold more realistic expectations
Admit it. Most of us here started drawing manga because we liked the style at a certain point. How awesome would it be to one day become a pro in that field. A real manga artist (or mangaka, like they say in Japan)! The truth is... becoming a mangaka isn't that easy. It it were, many more people would be one. First of all, mangaka's live in Japan. All art, no payI just had a discussion with an aspiring writer and manga artist at the convention last week. He told me he has good ideas for a story he's writing, but as he's terrible at drawing, he needed a manga artists to draw the actual manga for him. As he seemed to be pretty serious about it, he tried already to make contact with several artists. But as he doesn't earn money (because... hey... there's no manga yet) he didn't actually pay an artist for the work. As a result, most of the artist gave up after a few pages. Either that, or the art quality was (in his eyes) not good enough. All art, no pay in Personal More Like This
As a teacher for the mangaschool organisation, I see a lot of this kind of people. More than I'd like to, actually. This guy was a case book example of the young, aspiring, wannabe manga writer that doesn't understand that you have to invest in something, before you can actually get something from it. Especially when it comes to art.
He kept on ranting about how people didn't draw stuff for them, or how the

New Username Symbols: The JourneyA New Road to TravelNew Username Symbols: The Journey in Personal More Like This
When I was first approached with the project to redesign and replace our user symbols I was naturally quite shocked. For those of us who've been part of deviantART for a long while, changing the username symbols seemed like changing the colour of the sky, or asking everyone to suddenly start walking backwards, right? It seemed like such a fundamental part of what deviantART is that it was hard to take on board. But then really, when you think about it, the old symbols were meaningless at face value. And that, my dear friends, is exactly why we set about looking at rethinking them.
Think about when you first found and joined deviantART. Did any of the symbols make sense? Did you stop and think "what is this ~ before my name and why is it there?" Maybe, but possibly you're probably like me and just kinda accepted it because that's the reality presented to you. After a while, though, you'd have seen the * and maybe even a ` or ^ an
