BE QUIET!!!!!So uh... yeah this got out of hand pretty quickly:
I'll be honest. I wasn't expecting the backlash to be so violent. But I guess I should expect this sort of thing whenever it comes to video games. At any rate, a lot of stuff is being thrown around haphazardly and I wanted to address some of the main complaints/defenses about my criticism of Quiet's design.
"She's got camo skin! She's dressed this way for a reason!"
You know, you can come up with any number of reasons for a character to be scantly clad. But at the end of the day it's still a scantly clad conventionally attractive female character. Not to put to fine a point on it but having Mystique walk around naked because her skin changes color doesn't stop her from being a source of obvious pandering T&A. So I'm sorry, but that whole "you'll be ashamed for slut-shaming her" excuse doesn't hold water with me, especially after Kojima outright said that her design was to sell
Objectification of MenAfter reading through the comments on my last journal about Tropes Vs Women in Gaming Part 2 I noticed a lot of people are angry we're even talking about sexism because (as they put it) "men are ALSO sexualized and objectified in gaming so women shouldn't complain that they are too."Objectification of Men in Personal More Like This
And while that's a nice thought that sounds logical at first... any causal observer to gaming and most media today will be able to recognize that the two sides are not equal enough to make that sort of comparison. Here's the difference as I see it: Men are objectified and sexualized, yes, but it's not done for women. It's done for men. The objectification of men in gaming and other media is a self image fantasy FOR men. In other words, both the objectification of men and women are done for the benefit of men.
Not only that but again a casual observer will note that the standards of "beauty" are not at all equal on both sides. Female heros are all designed to be attractive, sexy, thin, sensual, pure,

So after the last batch of comics about women's rights in video games and comics, a distressing amount of people seem to think that any form of criticism against something automatically means you want to outright censor it. As an artist myself I can't help but feel really depressed that so many people think in such stark black and white terms.
When I made a comic being critical of MGS's new "Quiet" character, I was not asking for her design to be changed. I was not demanding Kojima alter his work. I was not asking gamers to not support the game. Yet to read all the defensive comments that seems to be what a LOT of people think I was aiming for.
Let me be VERY clear here: Criticism is NEVER censorship. As much as I don't like a lot of the criticism that's been lobbied against my work, I've never considered people's criticism to be a form of censorship. I've never felt "oppressed" by people's harsh words, and in those rare instances where I hav
Ms. Male Character - Tropes vs Women in Video GameI hate talking about Anita Sarkeesian, but primarily because there’s such anger induced hatred of the woman herself that people tend to gloss over what she’s saying and ignore the bigger issue by nitpicking her to death. That’s very frustrating for me because whenever I talk about her videos or so much as refer to her by name, the response is almost magical. Saying Anita Sarkeesian on the internet is like a magical incantation to summon trolls.Ms. Male Character - Tropes vs Women in Video Game in Personal More Like This
It’s almost impossible to talk about the subject matter (which is the actual issue that needs to be discussed) without devolving into a venom spewing hate storm against the messenger (Anita). And remember, this is coming from someone who DOESN’T LIKE HER EITHER. Her views on “Sucker Punch” were so misjudged and ill informed that it’s almost comical. That being the case, I feel the need to preface this journal with some requests. Please for the love of god if you are going to respond to this journal

After doing a series of comics standing up for women's rights, there's a lot of really negative rumors going on around me right now. Most of which point to the hypocrisy that I use to draw fetish artwork and that recently I made pin-ups that were "sexy" in nature. Because, of course, if you're an artist who stands up for women's rights from that moment on you're not allowed to EVER draw women in a way that might be construed as potentially "sexy," lest you be labeled a hypocrite.
As I've mentioned before in previous journals, I really can't stand this mentality the internet has of polarizing extremes. You've always gotta be in one extreme or you're in the other. There's never the possibility that you could be in the middle like, you know, a normal person would be.
I understand why that is: it's easier to point out fallacies and bitch and whine about people when they fit into nice neat black and white spec

Socially AwkwardI like the internet, but I acknowledge that it's not perfect. The ability for everyone to be the invisible man allows for a lot of injustice, bullying, harassment, and stalking to take place. This is slowly starting to change, however, thanks to every website gradually forcing people to link to their facebook (or other social media equivalent) accounts. No one wants to lose their personal social outlets as a result of the stuff they were doing elsewhere on the web, if you know what I mean. But... with all good things there are some bad things.Socially Awkward in Personal More Like This
I don't know if it's just me, but I'm getting really creeped out how by how much everything is getting connected these days. Nearly every website asks me to post about stuff on facebook or twitter or reddit or whatever. Many websites don't even have personal accounts anymore and just have you link your social media accounts instead. And all of them want to update everyone on your every move 24/7.
And that's what's bothering me. I don't want every

Sadly since Anita is such a hot-topic around the internet, there was more than one person who were trying to claim that there actually isn't ANY issue with the game industry involving sexism at all. To them, this whole idea that women are marginalized or objectified or treated badly both in the gaming industry and in geek culture is just false. It doesn't exist. And any attempt to explain why we need to change things is inherently flawed because there's no reason to do so.
So in the interest of trying to debunk that bullshit, I made a list of sources I accumulated around the internet to prove that this is indeed a problem. I think everyone can benefit f

The Downside to Internet Fame
This has been a topic on my mind a lot lately, especially over the recent Phil Fish controversy. In a lot of ways I find myself in the same shoes as Phil. My “reputation” online is not a very good one, and it often precedes me. No matter what website I go to, if I make an account and comment anywhere on the internet... those that dislike me will find me and make their presence known.
Part of the problem with being “famous” on the internet is that if you want to have a semblance of a normal life again, you essentially have to give up EVERYTHING that everyone else online takes for granted. I essentially have to give up twitter, Facebook, tumblr, DA, Pinterest, SA, YouTube, and pretty much any other website where I’m allowed to have a presence.

Sucker PunchedThis is a LONG one so settle in!Sucker Punched in Personal More Like This
I’ve been re-watching Sucker Punch a lot lately and have been humorously admiring how misunderstood it is. It’s almost comical how a movie that comes right out and says “I am about the negative connotations surrounding the constant sexual abuse and objectification that women endure,” gets reviewed and dismissed as “just another pandering male geek fantasy of objectified sexualized women.”
I could write a book on the various subtle metaphors and messages Sucker Punch visualizes, but I don’t wanna bore you all. But to demonstrate what I mean let’s just dissect a small piece of it.
Before we begin we need to understand two things. First, Director Zach Snyder made the film with the express intent of it being a feminist critique on geek culture. If you don’t believe me, hear it from his own words: http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/features/interview-zack-snyder-on-the-sexuality-and-world
The Used Game ParadigmOver the course of this past generation I've been watching the video game market react to the way it's been forced to deal with increasing changes. I've come out against used game sales and even written a journal about boycotting GameStop because (like most people at the time) I believed they were the root cause of all the problems the video game industry has. But that's something I don't believe now as intently as i did then. From where I sit, piracy and used games sales are a problem, but not in the way game companies want us to believe that they are.The Used Game Paradigm in Personal More Like This
Used games are a good thing for consumers. We get to try games out, and if we don't like what we see or finish it early, we trade it in and try another title instead. It's a very good system for us since video game rentals are much harder to come by. Most video rental stores in America have gone extinct and outside specific Red Box Kiosks there aren't a lot of places for consumers to rent video games. The exception, of course, being thr

1. This isn't actually happening on anything CLOSE to a large scale, and you can read all about that here: http://crystal-comb.deviantart.com/journal/To-people-worried-about-hacker-426388614
2. Copy/pasting a block of text will never protect you from being hacked. What happens is, people turn this kind of thing into a more legitimate-sounding version of a chain letter and watch the nonsense spread like wildfire.
So don't buy in - copy/pasting text will never save your dA, your FA, your Twitter, your Tumblr, etc, from hacking, so don't bother with it. Being cautious (changing your password, etc) is one thing, but spreading what it essentially just annoying chain letters is another.

It started when Tadpole brother came up the stairs, telling me that there were "birds outside". ..."Of course. They're not bothering anyone. What's wrong with birds?" Tadpole brother thought for a minute. "Uhh...they're really big birds. And they have really big feet."
...The big feet detail got me interested. That's not a detail that Tadpole brother would be able to make up, so there had to be something up with these birds. So, of course, I go look at the birds.
They were turkeys. And yes, I saw what he meant by "big feet". A turkey has big fat feet, unlike the little birds Tadpole brother usually sees, so it all makes sense now.
So I go take photos of the turkeys, 'cuz they're pretty damn cool. And about 5 minutes later, I hear a walkie-talkie crackle from aroun

I finally got the motivation to when Sarah sorairo-days emailed me to share my thoughts on what cosplay means to me, and what I feel it really means to be a cosplayer despite all the misconceptions about the hobby. It's for this article on Random Nerds, in which Sarah shares her side of it as well.On misunderstandings about cosplay in Personal More Like This
Over the years, I've witnessed how cosplayers are constantly looked down upon, which makes people apprehensive towards it. It's such a shame because it's a wonderful and rewarding hobby which brings people together. And in general, I am firmly against making anyone feel bad about doing something they want to do.
I am aware that the concept of cosplay might be too much for some individuals, but our intention definitely isn't to get all up in everyone's faces and say everyone should cosplay or whatever. We just want to promote a

Time flew by very fast, and before we knew it...
Our first day was spent doing a lot of eating, thanks to our guide Alyssa I will justify it as us fueling up for an action-packed weekend! We tried nasi lemak for the first time (LOVED IT), had some shaved ice desserts after, then a big dinner of clay pot rice, stir-fry noodles with clams, really tasty chicken wings, etc. and THEN we still raided Pick N' Pay for our midnight snacks because we love convenience stores and we wanted to try things we don't have in Manila.
We planned our cosplays ahead with Team Kachang Puteh, the guests from Singapore. Our theme for the first day of HobbyCon was Shingeki no Kyojin!

Vocaloid JBF Flower Wreath + Ciel lenses, etc.Jin's Flower Wreath ProcessVocaloid JBF Flower Wreath + Ciel lenses, etc. in Personal More Like This
Sometime last May, Kat moonlightflight and I cosplayed our favorite Vocaloid song, "Just Be Friends".
Their outfits seem simple at a glance, but that actually makes things more complicated sometimes. Hahah. Despite Luka's dress looking like something you could probably find in a mall, Charmie yaoiangel14 made the dress from scratch exactly as it looked in the artwork, just for Kat moonlightflight. Kat and I also did our best with the part of their outfits that had the most amount of detail (which also happens to be our favorite parts) the flower wreaths.
I have some pictures of the progress of my wreath, so I thought I'd share them. This probably isn't the best method of going about this, but this is how I did mine and I found it pretty easy. (I wish I could have taken more photos or a video, but to be honest I wasn't quite sure I'd pull this off at first. Hahah!)
How do you deal with haters?I got this as a question on my Tumblr, and I felt I could share my thoughts here as well because it seems it's something a lot of people can relate to. I hope this comes to helpful to any of you guys reading. How do you deal with haters? in Personal More Like This
I’m certain there are people who dislike me. Some I come to know through whisperings because I have eyes everyyyyywheeeeere.
However, I don’t feel the need to acknowledge them or do anything about it unless they are causing any real harm, especially to people I care about.
There is a popular quote that I like referencing for this topic, which gets the message across in a charming way:

In this post, I'll get into how I did each one!
Intro, and some bad old pictures
For those of you who have the patience to read for some extra info!
When I started cosplaying, I didn't think makeup was such a major part of it. I was so hesitant to even put eyeliner because I'd think, "This character is a guy, I shouldn't look like I'm wearing makeup!" And I guess I was silly enough to think I looked enough like the characters I chose without doing anything to my face?
I can't find more pictures of my really old cosplays (which is just as well, hahah) from the time I didn't want to use makeup apart from these:
I cosplayed as Haku from Naruto. I don't remember wearing any makeup for this. It doesn't show too well on these pictures but I saw some others where the natural redness of my lips made it look like I was wearing lipstick even if I wasn't. I felt it made me look more feminine than I should. Haku is still a guy after al

There's a lot of crap on the internet about what makes a character a Mary Sue/Gary Stu and what does not. Well, here's what I personally think about certain traits that some people overdo and how you can use them in your work without butchering them to the point of Uber-Sue Wonderland. This will tie in with my How to Roleplay Efficiently and How to Create a Good Horror OC journals. You don't have to agree with me on any of this. All opinions are my own, and I'm not trying to bash any particular OCs out there. I'm just trying to clear up some things and help people with OC development. Enjoy.

Alright, you know how a lot of OCs out there who are classified as Sues have tragic pasts? They come a dime a dozen, right? Well, I don't think the input of a tragic past is t
HomophobesYou know, it really saddens me how some people seem to think that they are 'above' gays. I don't see the point in it, honestly. And I know I'm not alone. Someone actually suggested that I do a rant on unfairness towards the LGBT community, but I can't remember who. Sorry. Anyway, why do you homophobes think you're so perfect? I identify with being pansexual, myself, because I think personality and morals mean a hell of a lot more than gender. Of course, I can't tell my family this because I would be disowned so fast my head would spin. Is that fair? No. I asked my mom once if she would hate me if I ever told her I was gay, etc., and she said no, but...I know better. I come from a family of Southern uber-Christians. What does that tell you?
Once again I say this: you're not better than anyone else out there in this big, wide world. We are all equal. Gays, lesbians, transvestites, straight people, it's
Horror Isn't Responsible For Your Shitty ParentingI wasn't gonna make a rant about this, but seeing as I'm an artist who has a burning passion for all things dark and horrific--and that occasionally involves me drawing Creepypasta and/or Slenderman-related art when I get the urge--I don't want anyone to think that horror artists are something terrible and evil just because two girls went nuts and stabbed some girl for the sake of being Slenderman's proxies.Horror Isn't Responsible For Your Shitty Parenting in Personal More Like This

Yes, of course they do. I've been playing Mortal Kombat--a video game known for its gore, violence, and sexual themes--for a long time, and I've never wanted to perform a fatality on anyone. Heh. I've been drawing gore and horror for as long as I can remember...uh...and I'm perfectly fucking fine. Why? Because my parents raised me better than that. What to Do if You're Feeling Down on Your ArtHi guys! My day has been kinda rough so there's no way to make me feel better but to make you guys feel better! ^^ I know a lot of deviants are very self-conscious about their art, so I figured I'd make a journal explaining how you can get over that problem! What to Do if You're Feeling Down on Your Art in Personal More Like This
You know, sometimes we just think our art will never improve, and that we'll never be great, talented artists. That's not the best way to think, though, because negative thoughts will hinder your progress and creativity! The first step in having more artistic confidence is knowing that you will improve, but it just takes time. Sometimes, it takes a LOT of time. It did for me. I used to suck majorly. There are parts I still suck at, like the dreaded anatomy *HNNG*, but I know I'll improve on that too. The best way to improve is to just KEEP. DRAWING. Or painting, or sculpting, or whatever it is you do! Another good way is to check out some tutorials. You can learn new techniques that way.
Another tip is to never get so down on yours
Rant: Equality, Not SuperiorityYou know what I find hilarious? The fact that some women out there whine about equal rights, yet they still want to be treated like a princess when it comes down to it. It's also funny when men want to be treated equally yet they don't want to be called out on their sexist bullshit.Rant: Equality, Not Superiority in Personal More Like This
Let me break it down...
Women are just as smart, capable, able, strong, and talented as men and should be treated with respect. We should be taken seriously when we need to be, and we should be seen with as much potential as anyone else. But when you claim to be all for equality, stop fighting for superiority. You're just making yourself look sexist. I thought that's what you were trying to rid from the world?
Men, you're just as worthy as women. You're also just as smart, capable, and strong. Just as you are apt to be hurt, abused, taken advantage of, and treated like shit as females--sometimes by females. But when you start acting like all women

Asexuality Myths and MisconceptionsThe first journal I wrote about asexuality and acephobia was liked by a lot of you, so I figured I would jump in with one touching on more of the myths that surround asexuality. I know a lot of my watchers are younger and are probably really confused about their sexuality (don't feel bad; so am I) so I'm going to try to put this into the simplest context so it's easier to understand for those that may think they're asexual but aren't completely sure yet.Asexuality Myths and Misconceptions in Personal More Like This
If you don't like or agree with anything I say here, feel free to hit the back button. I'd rather not deal with rudeness in the comments but if you insist on being an ass, go right ahead. I love watching people make idiots of themselves.
Asexuals don't exist.
Yes, they do. Not feeling sexual attraction towards someone is not a sin, a disease, or nonexistent. Ace people exist just as much as people of any other sexuality.
If you're truly asexual, you're unable to feel any arousal at all.
Fanart is ArtIt's kind of a debate around this site whether fanart can be considered true art or not. Well, as far as I'm concerned...of course it can.Fanart is Art in Personal More Like This
Fanart is just as legit as original art. It doesn't make it any less artistic, because even though the subject matter involves something created by someone else, you can add your own touches to it to make it unique. You don't have to, however. Some like to stick with drawing fanart as it is canonically, and others--like me--like to add their own spin to popular (or not so popular) characters to give that character's world a little taste of their style.
So many wonderful, talented artists draw fanart all the time. Does that make it any more amazing, because well-known artists draw it? No. But does it make it any less amazing just because it isn't 'original art'? I'd hate to know someone thought I 'wasted' my talent on fanart when I could be doing 'my own ideas'. What's the big deal? I draw fanart and I draw
Rant: Unneeded Trigger WarningsIf you've actually paid any attention to my page or the descriptions of certain artworks, you'd notice that I have disclaimers all over the place. Why? Because I want people to know that even though I draw some pretty touchy things sometimes like abuse, suicide, etc., that I don't support or condone these things, but it's just what I feel like drawing at the time. I always use the mature filter, and I support trigger warnings 100%, but only if they're necessary.Rant: Unneeded Trigger Warnings in Personal More Like This
When someone is triggered by something, it means that it causes them to have a violent physical reaction to it, have debilitating flashbacks, relapse, or become terribly disturbed. A trigger is not something that pisses you off, makes you go 'ew', or makes you butthurt. If I draw something depicting a gruesome suicide or murder, of course I'm going to put a censor and a warning on it, because I know that thousands of people are affected by suicide and murder every day. God knows I don't want to make someone have a p
How to Help Suicidal PeopleI really don't know why, but I just had a funny urge to write something like this. I guess it's because a lot of people come to me asking how they should help their depressed or troubled friends or family members, and since I kinda sorta get tired of writing the same old stuff to people (well, it's not always the same old thing, considering cases are different), I thought it may help to just make a little how-to on the subject and show what I do to try to help people I know when they become depressed or suicidal. How to Help Suicidal People in Personal More Like This
Yes, the first thing that makes all the difference is to take the time to listen to this person and understand where they're coming from. You can't help someone if you shut them down or refuse to take an hour or two out of your day to hear their side of the story. Truth be told, this is exactly why so many people think nobody cares, thus feeling unloved and unnoticed enough to believe that their presence is no longer needed here. Besides, you h

I'm starting out an image, and for the life of me, I just cannot determine what color I should use for the skintone. I wish I had a crystal ball that would show me thirty minutes into the future so I can see just how a character will look after applying all the necessary shading, anatomical detailing, and highlights based upon the base color I use. A lot of times, it'll appear too faint, too desaturated, or on the flip side, way too bold and gleaming like a bronzed deity caked in a thick lathering of walrus grease.
Which is delicious, by the way.
FORTUNATELY! The folks at The Humanae Tumblr seemed to have a crystal ball of their own. Not so much one that shows the final product of my work, but one that certainly told them of my many incredibly frustrating endeavors into spending a good chunk of time shading a character's skin only to realize the base tone was absolute g

It has been a while, but about a month ago, I was scammed by a rather comical fellow who got two artworks out of me and a couple others for free. His approach was quite simple: Have somebody do a single small portion of an image's creation, then leapfrog it to another guy to also do a small portion. The images were, in all honesty, very simple affairs; just easy single-character compositions of a World of Warcraft character that didn't have a whole lot of detail to her.
It started off with one guy doing a quick sketch of her, then another guy doing a quick inking, and then while those two were chasing on his heels demanding payment, he managed to sneak it off to me for colors before the other two caught on they were scammed and called him out.
Thus, when the news broke, it was on me. I had just finished my portion, and luckily for the scammer, he was sent the completed high resolution files just a couple hours before I discovered that I too wasn'
