A New Wind Lifts Storytelling
First imagined as a bedtime tale for his son by Kenneth Grahame in 1908, The Wind in the Willows has remained in the top twenty children’s stories ever since. But things have been getting weird out in the Willows, as the new comic on deviantART, Weirding Willows, will attest to.
Badger, Mole, Ratty and Mr. Toad are back… but they’re joined by Alice, Frankenstein’s Monster, Mowgli, The White Rabbit, Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny as they defend the world from the Wicked Witch of the West, Doctor Moreau, the Mad Hatter, Mister Hyde and the Queen of Hearts (not to mention the flying nightmare monkeys from Wizard of Oz.)

When recently asked how his political candidate would explain certain positions taken during the

replied that stated political positions were “like an Etch A Sketch,”—meaning they could simply be
flipped over, erased and begun over from scratch.
Were it that adult life were as simple as a happy Etch A Sketch memory from childhood.

me wonder how many of us had early experiences as “sketch artists” with that incredible red toy that
has become almost standard issue for so many children still to this day.

Who is this literary hero whose portrayal over the past century by such past masters as Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett to today’s vanguard talents Robert Downey, Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch has inspired such a continuing outpouring of fan appreciation?

About my TMNT rantGot a long journal head of you. I tried to break it up a bit so you can skim parts.About my TMNT rant in Personal More Like This
It appears some people were a little less than happy with the idea that I’m not going to see the new TMNT movie, yet have already formed a negative opinion about it. Some people, who don’t understand what the word means, are calling this “hypocritical” since I often ask that people try to see both sides of an issue, so taking a definitive stance here with (what appears to be to them) incomplete data is wrongheaded of me. So now I gotta write this journal to explain my actions better. Hope you’re happy ‘bout that...
It’s just a movie! Why does it matter?
Because it’s not JUST a movie. Movies do not exist in a vacuum. How well (or bad) a movie does informs YEARS of upcoming movies and careers. Thousands of people’s jobs are dictated on the whim of what the box office rankings are for opening weekend. A now famous example is Guillermo
3D Movies aren't as crisp as they use to beThis is a realization I had after getting the chance to watch some old school Pixar films in HD recently. While the story of Toy Story holds up well, the actual graphics and presentation look downright archaic in HD. Sometimes characters appear to “float” on the ground, while other times their feet intersect into the floor. Bump mapping textures are grossly pixelated. And I could literally see the wireframe corners of Buzz Lightyear’s mouth clipping into itself.3D Movies aren't as crisp as they use to be in Personal More Like This
That being said, one of the positive things I noticed was when I was watching A Bugs Life. The movie just POPPED with so much clarity and crispness. It was so beautiful to look at in HD. And then it hit me... the reason 3D movies don’t look this good, is because they’re not crisp anymore.
See, as technology got better, we learned how to round the edges of characters better. Objects that are square are still slightly rounded on the corners to make them more believable. And we learned to add in rack

One of the prevailing themes of the new movie, apparently, is that everything is predestined. April was predestined to meet the turtles, and the turtles were predestined to become mutants. Everyone is connected to everyone else in ways that are flabbergastingly stupid. So much for random chance creating the turtles... Another theme is that this is more or less April O’ Neil’s movie. Not the ninja turtles. April is the main character. April is the focus of the film. The turtles are there, but they’re side characters in the same way the Autobots were side characters in the Transformers films.
The reason I’m bringing this up here now before the film is even out is because... well... I want it to fail. That’s a little selfish, I know, but I honestly don

The State of Web Comics + My Intentions with SYACAbout SYACThe State of Web Comics + My Intentions with SYAC in Personal More Like This
One of the reasons I focus so much attention on Marvel and DC is because they’re big companies who should know better. They are made up by hundreds of people all chipping in little bits here and there, and for that there is no excuse for bad artwork, bad writing, or bad material in general. They are, to an extent, a bit of a cheap shot, but everyone can learn from their mistakes and I can offer my opinions about them and what I personally would do differently. And if you’re paying money for their products, I think you deserve good content in return, no?
SYAC is, at it’s core, about how comic artists and the comic industry works and poking fun at the various things they get wrong... and sadly that includes a lot of really hot button topics like Women’s Rights, Sexism, Racism, Homophobia, etc. Comics are no longer their own sheltered little thing... they’ve been THRUST into the mainstream audience and all of these problems we or

If you haven’t heard yet, Warner Bros has announced that Man of Steel 2 aka Batman Vs Superman (featuring WonderWoman, Cyborg, and other characters from Justice League) will be released on May 6th 2016. AKA... the same day as Marvel’s Captain America 3.
I think I’ve reached a point where I’d rather Warner Bros give up now, since they clearly have no idea what they’re doing and seem grossly disinterested in trying to “build” this DC cinematic universe. I don’t want to see a watered down Justice League film before the actual Justice League movie. And I personally think it’s box office suicide to release it the same day as Captain America 3. Marvel studios is, right now, the BIGGEST film franchise company IN THE WORLD. Topping even Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings. Combined, the Might of Marvel is INSANE... and you’re gonna position your weakest entry (the 2nd film in a franchi
DashCon - How not to do a conventionIt seems like every week there’s a new convention going on, and this was no different. DashCon (purportedly the largest gathering of tumblr uses to date), was happening this weekend and... well... it fell apart in many gloriously horrible ways.DashCon - How not to do a convention in Personal More Like This
First there were accusations of scamming, as the convention owners crowd-sourced $17,000 to secure the venue (which should’ve been done MONTHS in advance). All attempts to contact the hotel have resulted in the hotel saying there was no need to raise that money and that they never received any of it.
Then there were the cancelations. The Welcome to Nightvale people were flown in, but then told they weren’t going to be paid till AFTER they performed for everyone (which is already suspicious) and also told they weren’t getting reimberesed for the hotel, flight, food, etc. So sadly WTNV had to cancel at the last minute, resulting in the convention owners refunding patrons with “an extra hour in the ball pit.” The

Hey, remember how cool it was going to be that “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” was going to premiere on the same day as “Captain America 3” in 2016? Remember how Marvel/Disney said “we’re not gonna budge or be bullied into changing our schedule?” Remember how we effectively would’ve had a Marvel vs DC movie stand off? Yeah well that’s no more. Warner Bros/DC changed their release date for “Batman v Superman” to March 25th 2016 instead.
On the surface this looks like good news for the consumer. After all, this way we can pay for BOTH movies instead of having to choose one, right? However, the optics of this move look VERY BAD for Warner Bros/DC. After “Guardians of the Galaxy” just made a KILLING at the box office this past weekend, being one of the highest grossing Marvel movie releases EVER... having Warner Bros suddenly swap out this movie’s r

“Lucy,” the new Scarlett Johansson R-rated action movie, is beating out The Rock’s “Hercules” reboot. Since we all know box-office statistics gained over a single weekend dictate how Hollywood organizes their films for the upcoming years, this seems to be once again another blow to the idea that women can’t be big picture draws.
This whole year movies have been coming out featuring strong female characters and lead actresses, and there CLEARLY is a market for that as all of those films have been box office blowouts. And that just makes me happy because it proves the industry WRONG on so many levels. Even the fact that some of the movies were reviewed pretty badly (such as “Maleficent”), the fact that the films are huge box office draws shows that there was a market ACHING for some new content just sitting there.
Here’s hoping they finally green light a “
The Future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)Robert Downey Jr. was scheduled to have a small cameo appearance in Captain America 3. RDJ didn’t like the small bit part and wanted a much larger roll. Since his contract was coming to a close, Marvel though this might be a good time to drop him (because despite what you might think Marvel is still a penny pinching miser when it comes to paying for stuff). Long story short, Marvel and RDJ have worked out a new deal which will have Tony Stark and Iron Man in a much larger capacity for what is being called “Phase 2” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I was going to keep my mouth shut about this because mine seems to be an unpopular opinion, but y'know...since the story is on the news literally right now, I feel like giving my two cents on Free Speech and the Freedom of Expression artists so rely on.
I'm of the opinion that, why yes, I should be able to say whatever the fuck I feel like without worrying about offending someone. Because let's face it, the phrase "I'm offended" on the Internet has become a certain kind of Troll-Bait. Say you're offended on the Internet and you'll be bombarded with trolls shouting at you to get the fuck off the Internet and run back to ur mum.
I don't remember who said it first, but someone well-known said something to the effect of;
"You are free to say what you want, but you are not free from the consequences of that which you have said."

Okay, good, because I was gonna anyway.
Alright, I'm sure I don't need to tell any of you this, because all my watchers are fucking awesome, but I need to vent so, yeah.
So. If a certain member of a band you happen to like is being insulted and torn down in some way, and, say, for instance this is you favourite member of said band, you know what is a really fucking stupid thing to do?
Prove how good you think that member is, by attacking another member of said band. In fact, that makes you no better than the first person, and is actually probably going to make them hate the member they were attacking even more.
I'm gonna stop being cryptic now, and I'm sure this'll come as no surprise that the band I'm talking about is MCR, and the people in question are, naturally, Frank and Gerard.
I am getting sick of, firstly, people feeling the need to still talk shit about Gerard.
Okay, I'm gonna say it ri
Yes, I Did Miss You. More Than You Know. The title for this journal is in reference to Gerard's first solo single, Action Cat. The line: "do you miss me?" probably had the same effect on me as it did a lot of people. It made me realise just how grateful I was that he was back, making music again. And, it made me realise how much I'd missed him, physically.Yes, I Did Miss You. More Than You Know. in Personal More Like This
Some people talk about meeting their hero's/idols/celebrities who have effected your life in some shape or form, like a checklist. Now, that is no bad thing, if you have a list of people you want to meet, that's great, good luck, and I hope you get to meet all of them, I sincerely, sincerely do.
What no one ever tells you though is, if there is someone you are particularly effected by or connected to, a checklist will never do. Because once will never, never be enough.
As a few of you will know now, in 2012 me and a friend flew out to Vegas to meet Gerard at a convention being held there. It was an insane weekend that I won't go into here, because th

I will start this by saying the past couple of weeks have not been the easiest of times for me. But, in reality, I think it roots back further than a few weeks, and possibly further than I care to delve into. It's always strange when you start to trace it back.
I've explained, previously, about my anxiety and the way it effects me. In the past weeks, it's got bad, worse than before even. A consistent headache has plagued me during this time also, which, it turned out was a symptom of my anxiety.
I'm pleased to say I am finally getting ways with which to deal with this, which, though a little scary, is also quite a comforting thought.
And, over the past couple of days, I have been doing some musing over certain things, and I think I have come across some revelations, which, in many ways surprise me, but in other ways really do not.
I'll start with the one that, actually, makes me feel the happiest and calmest, now that I've fig

At around 10am (UK time) the hashtag - #WeLoveYouGerard was created and has been gaining momentum.
I spotted this hashtag, and between us, myself and my co-moderator have made it our mission to at least get Gerard to see this hashtag, and, ideally, to get it as a worldwide trend.
This is a small request, to those who are able... Get on twitter, and tweet with the hashtag #WeLoveYouGerard... I think it'd be truly wonderful if he could see this

If You Wish For Something Hard Enough...So, something I have been dreaming of for nine, long long years finally, happened to me on Friday night. If You Wish For Something Hard Enough... in Personal More Like This
You see... A band I loved broke up in early 2005, just short of a month after I'd last seen them live.
Last Friday night, I saw that band live again.
McBusted is the crazy, brilliant concoction of two bands, one that's been going strong for nearly 11 years (McFly), and one that's been apart from the last 9 (Busted).
Busted were, without doubt, the first band I loved. To say their split effected me is not even scratching the surface.
And McFly were the band I'd just got into, because of Busted, and when Busted were gone, McFly were who I fell back on. (Incidentally, when another certain break up occurred, it was, again, McFly I went to, remembering how they picked up all the little pieces of me last time around).
So, a little modified, and missing a member of Busted (the one who split them up in the first place...) , but, none the less, in all the ways that mattered...
I got my band
Gerard Way Street Team UKHello all!Gerard Way Street Team UK in Personal More Like This
I wanted to tell you about something rather exciting that I have just become a part of.
On twitter there are a few 'street teams' for Gerard.
A street team, basically is a group which aims to spread the word about a particular artist, usually through the medium of social media. And I am lucky enough to now be a full admin for Gerard's UK specific street team in twitter
i am currently one of two admins for the group (the other being the person who started it up in the first place), and already having quite a bit of fun! It's so awesome to be actively involved in something that deals in spreading the word about someone who is so very important to me
It's still only got a fairly small following, compared to some of the others, currently at just I've one thousand followers, but growing every day. And between us, me and the founder of the group have a couple of fun idea (some of which I'm still figuring out before I bring it to her )

It occurred to me that there were a couple of things I'd been meaning to share with you guys.
Now, only a few people on here have actually seen/met me in real life, but those that have will attest that, upon meeting me, one thing is very, very loud and clear.
I like Gerard.
Like, a lot... If the necklace doesn't give it away (which, I expect, is the first thing people notice), then various other clues will do it. One of my favourite things a friend of mine once said was 'You can't even look at you without seeing him somewhere!'
And, just sometimes, this immediate evidence of my being a fan leads to some pretty interesting conversations.
Going back a few weeks now. Interestingly, the weekend before Gerard got to London. I was out, shopping with my mum, and I happened to spot a comic book shop I hadn't been to before. So, you know, my mum gets dragged right on over there. She looks as interested as she poss

In my journal post for Gee's birthday last year I said I had a feeling it was gonna be a good year for Gerard, but I never could've guessed how right I could be... New album, amazing new songs, a spectacular tour (that's not even fully done yet)... and so much else besides.
He played Reading and Leeds.
Had amazing opportunities in comics, including his wonderfully unique take on the Spiderman story.
And he has grown, on a personal level, and he has allowed us all the opportunity to grow with him. As someone who has, once again, happily taken his offered hand and followed him wherever he might venture, I can honestly say he has continued to open my eyes. He continue
How It's Going To Be.I remember, very clearly, three New Years Eve's ago, how I spent the night, and how I saw the New Year in.How It's Going To Be. in Personal More Like This
I was listening to Brandon Flower's solo album, and I'd not long discovered a website which had a plethora of pictures of Gerard, so I was busily looking at those, and saving them onto my computer. This was back when I still thought having 1000 pictures of one man was rather incredible (at latest count I have 5300 pictures of Gerard on my laptop... Not counting the ones I have on my phone/ipad...!)
I was pretty pleased and happy with how I saw 2012 in.
Who could ever have guessed that here, three New Years Eve's on, and that same man who I spent roughly four hours saving pictures of, has become an even bigger part of my life than I'd ever imagined. Who knew I could love him more?
This year has been huge, in personal ways, and in every way possible to do with Gerard. I got the latest copy of Kerrang today, and in it was a full run down of Gerard's year, fully narrated by him.

You remember what it was like. Opening a dusty cardboard box,
yellowed with age, found in Grandma's attic. Dumping the 500
puzzle pieces on the kitchen table. Striving for several tedious
hours to complete a picture of assorted flowers in a vase, or a
kitten playing with string. Filling time until your parents picked
you up from dear ol' Granny's place. Boring.
Well, this puzzle is nothing like that! We're taking a fun and

Robert shot an action-packed short film called Two Scoops, starring twins Lola and Lucia who operate an ice cream truck by day and happen to also be monster-slayers. Fans contributed to the project by submitting films, Tweeting their ideas for super-weapons, creating the fiercest monsters, and sending in their photos to appear on Missing Person posters.
We're excited to announce that the collaboration is now complete! You can see the finished film right here, along with the best contributions from fans, and documentary footage to tell the story of the project.
Dialogue WorkshopI want this workshop to be somewhat different from other workshops -- I'm going to break this down into two categories: technical elements and personal advice.Dialogue Workshop in Literature Features More Like This
And I hate to say this, but the following information in this workshop only works if applied. Osmosis and good intentions do not work. Sorry.
PRE-EMPTIVE TLDR NUTSHELL
To write effective dialogue, there has to be a basic understanding of what communication is. Wikipedia sums it up nicely: the meaningful exchange of information between two or more people. It's easy but not at the same time.
This has to do with actual concepts for crafting effective dialogue. For the most part, I had to research the details but you'll be able to pick out what I added on my own. You know how I get and if you don't, you soon will. No apologies for that.

You owe it to your members and to the lit community at large to weed out/read the stories and poems you receive. You owe it to your members and the lit community at large to not be just another warehouse storage site for everyone's shitty work. How do you do this? I mean, that would be, like actually taking an active interest in your group. That's hard. I know you have Minecraft and Skyrim to play and every other stupid excuse in the world to not babysit your group -- it's so much easier to auto-accept every piece of scat that comes across your group's inbox! You don't have to do anything!
You are part of the problem why lit quality is so low.
You owe your members more than one asshole who thinks it's alright to submit his horrible fucking angst-ridden emo horseshit to 100+ groups (not an exaggeration). You've s

How to Create Compelling Characters
I can't speak for everyone but I read for compelling characters. If the characters really move me, the plot can be as thin as it wants; though it's not always easy to have characters carry the whole thing if nothing is happening.
Where do we find compelling characters? In books, of course, but they're obviously not confined to books. Compelling characters in movies are just as important. Unless you're doing improv, plays and movie

1. If you haven't read the work I work hard on since it's not on DA you can't judge and 2 what great piece of advice have you given me? The issue here is people seem to think people online are going to effect you, correct me if I am wrong but you guys arnt my friends so why besides the questions I do ask on here would I care what you think of me? I write for myself not to please anyone, and even if people didn't like my writing who cares I don't nessarly write for readers anyway.
i would say something salty but i just woke up. instead i'll ask this:
why write at all if only to please yourself? i don't buy it when anyone says that, not for a minute and not for a dollar. it's a false fucking modesty in addition to an outright lie. is it really so bad to write for people to read? are we the ones doing it wrong? really?&

“Those writers you think are masters of the craft aren’t created that way. They aren’t supernaturally capable ninja writer-bots. When you read the work of a writer operating at the top of her game, you’re not seeing all the years of failed efforts, of work that wasn’t quite right, of work that was well-intentioned or built off of strong ideas but had slick and wobbly legs like a newborn fawn.
You see the author operating at a high level and you wonder: why am I not doing that?
The reality is:
You’re only seeing the island, not the heap of volcanic material that pushed it out of the sea.”

cool article. i'm going to make a concerted effort to look at this element in my reading and writing (in my own and others) now that i'm more actively aware.
quote time“I often feel as if I’m writing not for a particular audience but for a better version of myself—a version that can’t be dismissive or judgmental, a version that understands that in order to write the kind of fiction I strive to write, it’s essential to feel compassion for even the least sympathetic people. And if there’s one quality that links all of the writers who have been the most important to me, it’s the emotional generosity with which they treat all of their characters.”quote time in Personal More Like This

i'm on a hunt for prompts from all over now for concepts and themes and genres that are outside my scope of ability. if i want to immediately not do the prompt, that's the one. i'm having some luck on tumblr finding the good stuff and i'll be checking out the ones here at dA, too. looking forward to trying my hand at SadPrompts.
Preparation, however, will consist of me pretending that my house is a library and reading something every two weeks. My style is stale and dry and I need to do something else. i just have had a rough last couple of years and it is all i can do to keep going some days. i didn't read much, i didn't write much. not a fan of both, so i'm gonna do something about it.
by the way, did you know reddit has writing prompts? holy dogshit, a reason to go hang out in that dumpster!
