New Korra Trailer Released**Contains Legend of Korra Season 1 Spoilers**
And honestly, I'm not feeling it. Doug Walker (aka The Nostalgia Critic) has been doing a series where he's been vlogging his experience watching the original Avatar series for the first time (Take a look they're actually really good go watch them! http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/thatguywiththeglasses/specials ). He's a new fan to the series and his enthusiasm and critique of the original series has only helped to intensify my loathing and hatred of The Legend of Korra's disastrous season finally.
The more I remember how amazing and awesome the original Avatar series is, the less I am interested in picking up the pieces and following these unlikable characters through another series of exploits, especially after haphazardly killing off the main villain in such a clumsy and awkward way. Not only that, but there's no growth to the main character at all. There's no journey of her learning how to be an Air Bender the way there was
Sexy VS SexistIt seems that the gaming world is finally waking up to the fact that women DO actually play video games. They (the gaming industry) are not being mature about it, but the fact that a female perspective and voice is being heard more and more is a very good thing in my books.Sexy VS Sexist in Personal More Like This
The latest controversy to break out in the video game world has been over niche gaming studio Vanillaware's recent title "Dragon's Crown," and the absurdly sexualized female character of "The Sorceress" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQKCgal1vdw
Some people are, naturally, offended that such a ludicrous character design with no sense of reality or function even exists, while the other side keeps saying "why are we even talking about this?" Both sides are being vocal, but they also seem to be talking past one another. One side seems to want to rid gaming entirely of sexy character designs, while the other seems to think this is some sort of "feminist agenda" and are being sexist in response because they fear having a
Sexism in Gaming Culture LINKSSo... that last journal was a doosie wasn't it? 500+ comments and counting! Yikes. I can always count on Anita Sarkeesian to give me tons of views, lol. All joking aside, that was a very serious batch of discussions. Anytime we talk about sexism and objectification of women in gaming or geek culture, it's sure to get a lot of responses.Sexism in Gaming Culture LINKS in Personal More Like This
Sadly since Anita is such a hot-topic around the internet, there was more than one person who were trying to claim that there actually isn't ANY issue with the game industry involving sexism at all. To them, this whole idea that women are marginalized or objectified or treated badly both in the gaming industry and in geek culture is just false. It doesn't exist. And any attempt to explain why we need to change things is inherently flawed because there's no reason to do so.
So in the interest of trying to debunk that bullshit, I made a list of sources I accumulated around the internet to prove that this is indeed a problem. I think everyone can benefit f
Nerd/Gaming/Comic Culture Sexism VideosSince this keeps being a reoccurring topic I thought I'd lend a hand and put together a comprehensive list of web shows and youtube videos that pretty much explain or talk about these various topics. The vast majority of these will be from Jimquisition and MovieBob's various shows (because in my eyes they're the two biggest proponents out there discussing this stuff on a regular basis), but there's a couple other web shows too. They've been all categorized and easily separated so you can pick and choose whatever you wanna watch. Objectification of MenAfter reading through the comments on my last journal about Tropes Vs Women in Gaming Part 2 I noticed a lot of people are angry we're even talking about sexism because (as they put it) "men are ALSO sexualized and objectified in gaming so women shouldn't complain that they are too."Objectification of Men in Personal More Like This
And while that's a nice thought that sounds logical at first... any causal observer to gaming and most media today will be able to recognize that the two sides are not equal enough to make that sort of comparison. Here's the difference as I see it: Men are objectified and sexualized, yes, but it's not done for women. It's done for men. The objectification of men in gaming and other media is a self image fantasy FOR men. In other words, both the objectification of men and women are done for the benefit of men.
Not only that but again a casual observer will note that the standards of "beauty" are not at all equal on both sides. Female heros are all designed to be attractive, sexy, thin, sensual, pure,
The Used Game ParadigmOver the course of this past generation I've been watching the video game market react to the way it's been forced to deal with increasing changes. I've come out against used game sales and even written a journal about boycotting GameStop because (like most people at the time) I believed they were the root cause of all the problems the video game industry has. But that's something I don't believe now as intently as i did then. From where I sit, piracy and used games sales are a problem, but not in the way game companies want us to believe that they are.The Used Game Paradigm in Personal More Like This
Used games are a good thing for consumers. We get to try games out, and if we don't like what we see or finish it early, we trade it in and try another title instead. It's a very good system for us since video game rentals are much harder to come by. Most video rental stores in America have gone extinct and outside specific Red Box Kiosks there aren't a lot of places for consumers to rent video games. The exception, of course, being thr
Too SoonIn one of my recent comics I casually mentioned the shooting at The Dark Knight Rises premiere in Colorado. The comic wasn't about the shooting, nor was it making light of the shooting. However, some people weren't able to see past that and felt it was offensive and in poor taste.Too Soon in Personal More Like This
I am really sorry that my comic offended anyone. It was never meant to trivialize the deaths of the victims of that event, nor was it trying to make fun of them. I was never suggesting or inferring that you should ignore the tragic event, nor trying to be dismissive of the event. I wasn't saying you shouldn't feel empathy, or even sadness over the event. And I especially wasn't trying to paint myself as being uncaring towards the victims.
If you'd like to help the victims through this terrible event, please check out this http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/20/aurora-theater-colorado-shooting_n_1690093.html?utm_hp_ref=impact here. You can help by donating to The Colorado American Red Cross chapters, donate
Korra Problems Part 2After reading through the comments on my last journal (http://tompreston.deviantart.com/journal/New-Korra-Trailer-Released-386752726) it was apparent I wasn't very clear about what I meant when the producers knew at the end of the last episode that they had been picked up and could've changed the ending. Some of you thought that I meant they knew all along that Korra was meant to have more than one season, and that's not true. Korra was planned as a one season show, and it was through it's popularity while airing that Nickelodeon greenlit the next several seasons. However, that doesn't excuse the rushed ending and I wanted to explain why, but it's gonna take a little bit since I need to explain a bit about american animation productions first.Korra Problems Part 2 in Personal More Like This
Now keep in mind, a lot of this journal will be speculation since I didn't work on Korra and have no privy to the actual behind the scenes workings. However, I do know a lot about american TV animation production to make some educated guesses and
Sucker PunchedThis is a LONG one so settle in!Sucker Punched in Personal More Like This
I’ve been re-watching Sucker Punch a lot lately and have been humorously admiring how misunderstood it is. It’s almost comical how a movie that comes right out and says “I am about the negative connotations surrounding the constant sexual abuse and objectification that women endure,” gets reviewed and dismissed as “just another pandering male geek fantasy of objectified sexualized women.”
I could write a book on the various subtle metaphors and messages Sucker Punch visualizes, but I don’t wanna bore you all. But to demonstrate what I mean let’s just dissect a small piece of it.
Before we begin we need to understand two things. First, Director Zach Snyder made the film with the express intent of it being a feminist critique on geek culture. If you don’t believe me, hear it from his own words: http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/features/interview-zack-snyder-on-the-sexuality-and-world
Internet TimeWe had the Oscars recently and as usual it wasn't without problems. One of the controversies was Chris Rock's biting commentary about doing voice work for animated films, which was unfortunately insulting to the many hard working (yet perpetually unknown) talents who produce about 90% of all voice work in the animated medium. Chris Rock's joke was funny for his circle of friends and the aging academy, but to younger artists and professionals it was very disrespectful. Voice actress Tara Strong took particular issue with Rock's comment and as we speak his twitter account is no doubt being flooded with angry hate messages and likely racism too... which is very unfortunate. http://www.examiner.com/african-american-entertainment-in-national/tara-strong-attacks-chris-rock-over-oscar-2012-animation-comments-quotesInternet Time in Personal More Like This

Political RhetoricI hate politics, and I've been trying my best to stay out of the messiness that they tend to produce. But recently I just can't, in good conscience, sit by while candidates I morally disagree with rise in the polls. Today I posted a comic about an observation I had made about Republican candidate Rick Santorum... and much to my amazement it actually DIDN'T land me in a world of political crap!Political Rhetoric in Personal More Like This
It also led me to many things I had not heard about because I had been purposefully avoiding the whole debacle. Things which... would make for funny comics, or at least political statements. But as I mentioned before, politics is messy and often un-fun. I don't want to push a good thing too far.
So my question to you all is this... should I make a couple more political cartoons? Or should I leave politics and religion and all that other stuff out of my art?

I've got to come up with a better system for telling what day it is. Maybe I could scrawl numbers on the back of my shoe? Nah, that sounds like something silly that Pilot would do.
I'm currently carrying a calendar that says 2012 on it, but I am pretty sure that these days aren't correct anyway to our year and Captain keeps scribbling things in the margins whenever I get distracted enough for the calendar to be snatched out of my hands. I found the calendar more or less intact and it's kinda impressive that it lasted from way back in 2012. It must have held some sort of personal importance to it's owner to seal it away in a plastic container with words "the Mayans were wrong, trust no-one!"
I've been trying to keep track of how old I am, but I keep forgetting to check off every day in the calendar or maybe captain is messing off with me by erasing my checkmarks.
Something tells me I shouldn't be telling Captain about my birthday anyway. I would

The new organism had come to life in which we were only neuron cells of her massive mind, that spanned continents.
Humanity no longer had a chance to survive in it's current state. We had poisoned the oceans, we had scorched the earth and blackened the sky in our quest for power.

Today captain declared as "REMEMBERANCES OF THE PAST DAY".
The day begun with me getting smacked with a broken laptop and yells "YOU'VE GOT MAIL!".
I tried to protest that laptops weren't attacking people in the mornings back in the past. To this, Captain declared that in fact they didn't have to, because users were so addicted to reading their daily mail facts that every morning they woke up smacking their heads on their laptops.
Then my head was treated to a barrage of empty, metal SPAM cans with words "SPAM MAIL! DODGE THE SPAM! USE FILTERS!".
With these words, captain gave me two old tennis rackets. The tennis rackets had yellow duck-tape stickers on them with words "DELETE" and "BLOCK EMAIL ADDRESS".
The spam can attack didn't end there, Pilot's job for today was hiding behind building ruins and throwing the spam cans at me at random intervals with yells of "INCREASE YOUR GENITAL SIZE!", "RUSSIAN BRIDE LOVES YOU" and "I AM NIGERIAN PRINCE WITH 56 BILL

I’ve seen far too many people on dA who post exercise after exercise, writing in the artist comments that once again they’ve failed, they’ve read hundreds of books, studied the masters for so many years, and they still cannot draw a photorealist rending of a man’s head. First of all let me say that I highly respect “self taught” artists and I’m not discouraging anyone who chooses (or must) go that route. However, setting realistic goals and finding your niche is extremely important. Let me say this: not everyone will be able to paint like a Baroque period artist! But that doesn't mean you can't be a painter, it just means
Composition...Have you "worked" it out?Hey guys, this may be a silly question, but do you keep a sketchbook? Many of you probably do (at least a collection of paper that you have sketches on). Perhaps this is where your most immediate ideas go down, maybe you develop characters, or even sketch from life! But do you plan out compositions in sketch format, or do you just go right at it and attack your painting or drawing? If you do the latter, you should consider the best ways to plan out your drawings compositionally Just taking 15 or 20 minutes to sketch out the whole thing can help you work out problems or change things before you get to the final project, it will also help you have more confidence as your skills develop! Here are some things to consider when you are sketching:Composition...Have you "worked" it out? in Personal More Like This

About the Username Change and the Imeji CheinjiI never believed that name change would exist due to many valid reasons, but yet, they made it. Honestly, I've been wanting to change my name since long time. I'm in no ties or any desire with "Pearl" in any way which I named it when I was quite young.
