  • 6-Month Premium Membership to deviantART.com
  • 4,000 deviantART Points
  • $1,500 USD Cash Prize

Menacing and sleek. This design has amazing aesthetic consistency and a great presence that introduces unique components front to back. It is both conceptual and consistent with the evolution of the IS line.

  • 6-Month Premium Membership to deviantART.com

Fully embracing the Lexus spindle grill, the front facia is very bold and has just the right amount of attitude. The subtle use of color accentuates the lines without overpowering them.

Texture Your World Contest

Mon Jan 21, 2013, 6:55 AM

Tell us the story of your world in textures!

We are surrounded 24 hours a day by objects that have texture, they may be smooth or bobbly, old or new, bold, bright, shiny or dull. You might see a texture every day and never notice it until you start looking. Do you sit at a desk that's textured, or pass an interesting tree on the way to work or school?

We want you, in the form of a triptych (thats 3 images forming a larger image see example here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triptych ) to tell us the story of your textured world. Each individual texture should stand on its own, both as a useful resource and as a cohesive part of the whole story. What story you tell through your texture triptych is up to you - but they must be textures that tell a story of your world in some way.

There are 3 categories for this contest, each of which you can submit to twice.

Digital stock
These are textures created digitally by either manipulation of other stock or painting etc

Photographic stock
These are textures which have been photographed with either a film or digital camera with minimal post editing (if you do a lot of post editing on your textures you might want to consider submitting them to the digital category instead)

Traditional stock
These are textures created with traditional media then either scanned or photographed to convert to a digital medium for submission

Submission Examples

Portrait

Landscape

Square

Submission Rules

  • Each individual texture making up the triptych must be a minimum width/height of 1000 px
  • Full submission triptych must be a minimum width/height of either 1000 px or 3000 px depending on the orientation/formatting you choose, please see examples above.
  • Each deviant may enter up to 2 times per category. (Essentially that's 2 triptychs per category or 6 textures)
  • Judges reserve the right to eliminate entries that do not meet the minimum size requirements shown above
  • Only complete triptychs will be considered as legitimate entries. (3 textures on 1 file/deviation)
  • Triptychs must be submitted to the correct folder as per the contest category in StockandResources
  • Triptychs must be submitted into the correct Resources /Stock Images /Textures /... sub category depending on their style
  • Judges reserve the right to eliminate entries that are not submitted to the correct gallery or contest folder
  • Entries must be new as of the start date of the contest and must be your own work
  • Please state clearly in the description that the work is being submitted to this contest

Art Under The Radar

Each day, hundreds of thousands of pieces of art are submitted to deviantART. As more and more artists join, create, and share their work, it becomes easy for high quality art to miss its chance to stand out and be seen.
Our new browse mode, Undiscovered, aims to bring new, high quality artwork to the foreground.

Finding Hidden Gems

Undiscovered focuses on recently submitted artwork that has not yet drawn attention or recognition at the levels of Popular or What's Hot browse modes. Using an algorithm that identifies patterns in community behavior when curating content, Undiscovered generates a browsing experience that draws attention to creative art and talented artists that may not receive the same level of attention from other browse modes.

Please keep in mind that the algorithm that powers Undiscovered is still new and we may make changes as it grows in use.

Discover New Art Daily

Because Undiscovered focuses on recently submitted artwork, the artwork displayed may change throughout the course of a day, frequently bringing you new art by a wide variety of artists, and giving more art and more artists the chance to be seen.

DeviantART is proud to present Undiscovered, a new Browse method designed to surface new, quality artwork that has yet to be discovered!

In our continuous effort to improve the deviantART experience, we're publishing weekly Site Updates to keep members informed and to gather feedback. Below is a list of recent changes to the site, bug fixes, and feedback that was brought up by members in the last Site Update.

What's New

Removal of the Outgoing Page

Update, October 24: We've removed the "Now Leaving deviantART.com" page that previously displayed when clicking a link that navigated to an external site. Outgoing links will still be signified with an outgoing symbol, and, to ensure a safe and enjoyable Internet experience, we encourage you to always be aware of the URL for any link you're clicking.

Screen Shot 2014-10-24 at 4.16.19 PM by wreckling

Change Log

  • The "Give" modals displayed when giving Points and other things was not displaying correctly in iOS 8. Fixed by baclap
  • When in the Admin Area of a Group, editing the Announcements section would not save properly. Fixed by baclap
  • For new deviants, the Watch Feed would not display their activity. Fixed by helloandre
  • Status Updates would not visually retain their spacing around the edges immediately after editing, although they would displaypadding around the edges after editing. Fixed by inazar
  • In rare cases, deviations that required a viewer to be logged in to see could still display, when embedded at full size within a Journal. Fixed by trezoid

Your Feedback

Thank you for the feedback on last week's Site Update!

  • We received a lot of feedback on last week's update due to the launch of all the new features, and we're continually appreciative of the passion which the community shows when new features are introduced and other features are updated. We're continuing to monitor performance and community feedback at this time.
  • We've been hearing a lot of community suggestions on how the new features could be improved — some deviants compiled extensive feedback and even created mockups. Please keep it coming! Some of the interesting mockups for suggested improvements include rotane's detailed Activity suggestion, and Kiwikku's Collections and Watch Feed suggestions.
  • In response to the Discuss topic, generally deviants enjoy seeing Status Updates and artwork from Collections most, when browsing their Watch Feed.
  • Some deviants mentioned that the amount of Group deviation submissions they see in the Watch Feed can be too much, at times. To solve this, alltheoriginalnames suggested that deviations from Groups could display the same way Collections do.
  • A few deviants mentioned that when viewing Collections in the Watch Feed, they'd like to be able to click through to individual works, rather than clicking through to the Collection first.
  • NatahanKataka suggested a "Back to Top" button, when browsing the Watch Feed.

Discuss!

Improving Notes

We've been having early discussions about Notes and what would make a better private messaging system on deviantART. We know Notes search is a common request, but we'd like to hear what additional features or upgrades you'd like to see to the Notes system.

Here are some ideas to get you started:
  • A chat/realtime-like experience?
  • Notes between a group of deviants?
  • Easier ways to send a deviation to a friend via Notes?
  • Something else?

Lightbulb Want to keep track of known issues? Check out our Status Forum!

This week's Site Update includes the removal of the Outgoing link page, bug fixes, your feedback from last week's Site Update, and a Discuss topic about improving Notes!

Explore the full range of DeviantArt.

With better organization and improved structure, our new navigation creates a more streamlined site experience.  Features like Today, Undiscovered, and What’s Hot have been given more prominence, while the More menu is now easily accessible with its simplified, new look.  The addition of infinite scroll on Daily Deviations allows you to quickly discover even more hand-selected deviations. This all adds up to more control over what you use most and makes it easier to discover great artists and their art.

More Menu

The More menu, which was previously available next to the DeviantArt logo, has been better organized and moved to a more prominent and convenient location. This change was based on community feedback that its previous placement was hard to find, and its contents overwhelming.

Homepage

Your DeviantArt homepage is defined by you — it will remember which subnavigation tab you visited last.  For example, if you’re someone who loves Daily Deviations and wants to see them every time you visit the homepage, simply click Daily Deviations in the subnavigation and that section will act as your new “home” every time you return to DeviantArt.com.

Sticky Navigation

When viewing deviations on the Browse page, the subnavigation and left sidebar travel down with you as you scroll, so that other pages can easily be accessed regardless of where you are on the page. With endless scrolling on Browse pages, having the navigation readily available is handy if you’re deep into a browse experience.

And More!

Daily Deviations, now featuring endless scroll, have been added to the new subnavigation as well.  Visit the updated Daily Deviations page to easily scroll through thousands of amazing, hand-picked deviations.

Also, for deviants who prefer the Stick Menu option, it remains available, but has been relocated to your Settings page.

Improving the browse and navigation experience is part of our ongoing mission and we're eager to bring you continued updates in this area. We realize these changes may modify your daily navigation habits and appreciate your perseverance in integrating these changes into your daily routine.

Share your thoughts on the new navigation by posting a Status Update using the #NewNavigation tag.

As DeviantArt grows, we strive to find more ways to connect you with the things and people that matter to you most. After months of designing, testing, and engaging in community conversations around the shape of things to come, we’re proud to announce a series of features that will bring you closer to the community.

Discover more of your favorite topics.

Tags create landing pages around topics — making it easier to discover related artwork, bringing together artists and art appreciators, and forming communities around common interests. As DeviantArt grows and creates new ways to discover great content, we believe tags will play an important role in better surfacing artwork.

Tag Deviations, Collections, and Status Updates

You now have the ability to tag your deviations and Collections. Tags added to your deviations will be publicly viewable — this is a change from the previous use of keywords, which were private. Visitors can learn about your work by viewing how you tagged it, and can find more works by you and other deviants based on tags. Tags can also be used in comments, Status Updates, Journals, and Collections.

Tagging your deviations and Collections will improve their visibility across the DeviantArt network. Tags are the glue for surfacing and creating context around different types of content. Tagging is a crucial part of discoverability and will help your work find the audience that will appreciate it most! The goal of tags is to help you find art and topics that resonate with you, real-time community activity, and new ways to participate in the community.

“Tags will make it much easier to categorise and find deviations!” —Baka-Inu-Ninja

Tags Pages

Tag pages display artwork, Journals, Collections, Status Updates, and a stream of activity around a shared theme. You can also find a list of deviants who are frequently using that tag, to connect with other people who share your interests.

Tags Transitioned From Keywords Must be Approved

Important: Keywords added to existing deviations before tags launched will not display publicly unless you approve them using our new Tag Editor, which can also be used to add and edit tags on your existing deviations in bulk.

Editing Tags with the Tag Editor

Using the tag editor, you can add, edit, and approve tags on your deviations in bulk. The Tag Editor allows you to manage tags, up to 20 deviations at a time — making it a more seamless process for you to tag your content. The Tag Editor can be accessed next to the “tags” field while editing any existing deviation.

Start Tagging

Get started now! Read our tagging guide and use the Tag Editor to approve tags on your deviations.

Share your thoughts on the new tags feature by posting a Status Update using #Tags.

What's the
Journal Portal?

News, blogs, and journals have been merged into one, unifying these systems in order to make them simpler to use and more consistent in appearance and functionality.  In bringing them together, now categorized as deviations, they're able to receive the same great benefits as all deviations on the deviantART network.  Including the following:

Super Browse

Using the Journal Portal, you'll be able to look through an endless stream of content.  Much like deviations, you may now flick through journals quickly.  View Newest to find what's hot right now in the deviantART community, or view Popular to see what topics and issues are important to the masses.

+fav Journals

Show your appreciation for a well-written journal or store it away for a rainy day in your Favourites.  The Favorites widget on Profile Pages can be used to spotlight and showcase your favorite journals.

Protect

Using Sta.sh Writer, journals can be kept hidden from from wandering eyes (aka non-deviants).

Search

Just like all deviations, journals are now searchable through deviantART's search function.

Statistics

Inspect a journal's performance with easy access to view number of comments, favourites, and pageviews.

Share

Promote and distribute journals by copying and pasting helpful http://fav.me links and :thumb: codes found right on the deviation page.

Telling our stories through art features

Journal Entry: Wed Jul 10, 2013, 6:12 PM
If someone told you that you had to find the 5-7 pieces of art on dA that best represent you, could you do it? :XD:

What do your favorite works of art say about you? Have you ever thought about it?

I'm featuring 7 deviations that blow me away, that I turn to for my own inspiration. Each one tells a story to which I can relate. A piece of my own story is echoed in each image.

What's your story through art? Create a journal with 5-7 of your favorite deviations that best represent you, and link me!

I love rain. I love the way it washes away sorrow and leaves your soul open for the sunlight.
Rainbow Rain by LiliaOsipova

This image reminds me of me because of the feeling of pain, of being hit with a constant barrage of garbage in my life that I don't need or deserve. You can avoid a lot of it, but sometimes it comes up and strikes you on the chin, reminding you to pay your dues.

Beautiful dress, beautiful hair. And fangs. And blood!! Yes, please!

I'm a Scorpio Fire Dragon. I love dragons; they are my spirit animals. I also love the color red!!
Summer Dragon by PerlaMarina
I love light and bright colors, and I'm always looking for the next adventure. What's on the other side of that door?

A Knock at the Door - Ver. 2 by Foxfires

Yin and yang, light and dark, good and evil . . . the struggle to find balance and, ultimately, peace within one's own mind. I am perfectly at peace in the dark, though I tend to live in the light.
The lake by MarcelaBolivar
I always have a thousand things on my mind-- a thousand wishes left to fulfill and many, many pages left to write. What appears scattered at times is actually only the shifting of priorities. On My Mind by Sangelus

What speaks to YOU? Who are you, in art? I challenge each and every one of you to post a journal of 5-7 personal inspirations. The deviations can be any medium or a mixture of all of them. Leave a link on this journal if you want me to check it out. :) Let's see what we have in common and who we can discover through one another!

Before and After Competition!

Sun Jul 8, 2012, 11:26 AM

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:Something AWESOME this way comes!:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

Guess what?!! :excited:

As a final close-out to our Project Educate: Feedback Week, we have one more special treat! :woohoo:

You've critiqued like crazy, and you received some great critiques as well! Awesome job!! But what good are critiques if you don't ever use them? :boogie:

The first ever Feedback Frenzy Contest is nearly to a close. Fellow deviants, it's time to put those critiques into action! :eager:

Welcome to the Before & After Competition, hosted by
FeedbackFrenzy!

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:What is it?:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

The Before & After competition is a chance for you to take the critiques you received on an OLD work and put them into action in a NEW work. You are not redoing an old deviation, but rather using what you have learned in a brand new one. This is a Community Relations-backed competition, and we would love for you to participate!

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:When is it?:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

The Before & After competition will run from the time the Feedback Frenzy competition closes (July 8th at 11:59 PM PST) to August 31st at 11:59 PM PST. So, basically your final deviations, which you created with feedback in mind, must be created AND submitted between 09 July and 31 August, 2012. That's nearly two full months! :XD:

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:What do I do?:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

STEP 1. RIGHT AWAY (July 9th or later, but as soon as you know you are going to enter), you need to submit up to 2 "Before" deviations to FeedbackFrenzy in the BEFORE DEVIATIONS FOR BA CONTEST Gallery folder.

THIS MUST BE DONE BY JULY 16th at 11:59 PM PST.

This should be a deviation you like but, more importantly, one for which you received feedback from which you really feel you can learn. Again, we must stress: You will NOT be remaking this specific deviation; you will be creating a new image based on the feedback. The FEEDBACK is what is
most important: is this feedback you can use to create something new? Choose wisely, as you cannot switch the deviation(s) out later.

We will be comparing the old deviation(s) with the new deviation with respect to adherence to the feedback and guidance you were given. If they told you to make your lighting more consistent, did you try to do so? HINT: Make sure there is room for improvement in the original deviation(s). ;)

STEP 2.
Create a NEW deviation. Start from scratch; don't deconstruct and reconstruct the old deviation. It should, however, be somewhat related in that you are improving a technique or skill that you also used in the first deviation. So, for example, let's say you were told to add some depth to your foreground trees, and that's a piece of feedback you wanted to use. Then, obviously, you'd need foreground trees or some other foreground object to which depth could be added when you make the contest deviation. Similarly, if you were told to make lighting more consistent in your original deviation, then in the contest deviation you would clearly need to show a light source and how it consistently impacts other items in that scene. But again, you are not recreating the same deviation. Be creative.

If you didn't participate in Feedback Frenzy, it's okay. Any piece you have done recently (past 3 months) that you received constructive critique or feedback on will be fine. :)

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:How do I submit?:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

When you have finished your new deviation, you can submit it to deviantART in this gallery:

CONTESTS > 2012 > BEFORE & AFTER FEEDBACK

Note that this is a gallery on dA and not in the group. So, you would select it as your category when you actually submit the deviation to the site.

IMPORTANT: In your artist's comments, please copy and paste a link or thumb to the "Before" image and the feedback or critique(s) you used to create the image. We'd like to know which comments from it you used. Comments from other deviations besides the "Before" entry will not be considered.

Also IMPORTANT: In your artist's comments, please state that your deviation is an entry into the
BEFORE & AFTER FEEDBACK CONTEST.

You can only enter one time, so be careful to do your best work! :D

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:Other rules:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

:bulletpink: You may NOT edit the original ("Before") deviation following the start of the contest. You will automatically be disqualified if you do.
:bulletyellow: Please put a filter over any mature deviations.
:bulletpink: If your work uses stock or resources, please be sure to credit those items with direct links.
:bulletyellow: Your work must be your own. No collaborations. This is NOT a team competition.
:bulletpink: All entries must be received by 11:59 PM PST on 31 August, 2012.

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:Prizes:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

Thanks to the generosity of Moonbeam13 and Community Relations here on deviantART, we have the following prizes to offer:

:bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:Too long, didn't read? :D :bulletpink::bulletyellow::bulletpink:

1. Before July 16th, submit no more than two "Before" deviations (deviations for which you've received great feedback) here: feedbackfrenzy.deviantart.com/…
2. Create a NEW deviation based on the FEEDBACK you received on your "Before" deviation
3. Submit this deviation under Contests > 2012 > Before and After Feedback no later than 11:59 PM PST on August 31st, 2012
4. If you have further questions, please read the blog above, and if you still have questions, note FeedbackFrenzy. :D

Thanks, and good luck!

Photomanipulation Contest: Rebirth and Renewal

Journal Entry: Mon Jan 14, 2013, 11:55 PM

Welcome to the latest community competition for Photomanipulation!

This is the official kick-off blog for the latest, greatest EXTREME PHOTOMANIPULATION CONTEST here on dA! The contest is backed by communityrelations with HUGE prizes and hosted by CRPhotomanipulation. This journal describes the rules for the contest. Please read it carefully.

What we mean by "Extreme" photomanipulation

You should reach beyond your comfort zone and create a deviation that is bold, unique, and better than you thought you could create. Try something new. Break the mold. You've got this!

We have HUGE prizes. So, we are expecting HUGE results.

Theme: Rebirth and Renewal

Our theme, Rebirth and Renewal, was suggested by administrators of CRPhotomanipulation. You are hereby challenged to create a photomanipulation that shows rebirth and/or renewal. For example, it could show a transformation of sorts, being brought to life, or perhaps shedding the old to reveal something fresh and beautiful (or ugly!) beneath. Perhaps your transformation is into death, and you can show that. You should interpret what being reborn or renewed means to YOU and then depict it in a photomanipulation.

Time frame

The contest will be open for 2.5 months.

Contest opens: 15 January 2013
Contest closes: 1 April 2013, 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time (visit www.timeanddate.com to find out what time that is for you)

The Rules

Here are the rules in detail:

:bulletpink: Your entry MUST be a PHOTOMANIPULATION. That means it involves 2 or more photographic elements that have been combined to create something new. It is absolutely fine to have photomanipulations that have been painted over (and thus may technically be Mixed Media). SINGLE photographs that have ONLY been brushed or textured will not qualify. There must be at least 2 photographic elements. If you are in doubt, please check with us!

:bulletpink: No entries created before January 15, 2013 will be accepted. Entries must be new and specifically created for this competition.

:bulletpink: Contest closes at 11:59 PM PST on April 1st. No late entries will be accepted.

:bulletpink: *ALL* stock must be credited, including brushes. All stock must be from legitimate sources. If you don't know where the stock that was used to create your premade background came from, don't use it. If you don't know where the cutout stock came from, don't use it. We will decline all entries with questionable stock. If you don't know, ask. Direct links are NOT necessary, but they are always appreciated. See the stock reminder here.

:bulletpink: Collaborations are OK as long as all collaborators are credited, but if a prize is won, that prize will be split evenly among collaborators. If you are submitting a collaboration, you only need to submit the work once.

:bulletpink: You may enter up to TWO deviations, but you can only win once.

:bulletpink: Please include a statement in your artist's comments that you have created the deviation for the Rebirth and Renewal Photomanipulation Competition. Please link to this blog.

:bulletpink: There are special rules and requirements for some categories. Please carefully read the submission requirements below.

How do I submit?

There are three folders in CRPhotomanipulation that are open for submission: BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE, and ADVANCED. You should choose which level you feel is most appropriate for your art and submit to that folder. There are special rules and requirements for some categories. Please read below to find out which one is best for your work! If you have questions, please ask.

Here is the rubric and rules for deciding where to submit:

BEGINNING ARTISTS must demonstrate knowledge of:

:bulletgreen: Cutting out stock properly :bulletgreen:
:bulletgreen: Arranging pieces to tell a story (effective composition) :bulletgreen:
:bulletgreen: Must use at least 2 tutorials (and cite them in artist's comments). They can be on or off of dA. :bulletgreen:

INTERMEDIATE ARTISTS must demonstrate knowledge of:

:bulletblue: Composition :bulletblue:
:bulletblue: Color theory :bulletblue:
:bulletblue: Light and shadow :bulletblue:
:bulletblue: Proportions :bulletblue:

ADVANCED ARTISTS must demonstrate mastery of:

:bulletpurple: Light and shadow :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Composition :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Blending (you can't tell it is made from different images) :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Perspective :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Flair (the "wow!" factor) :bulletpurple:
:bulletpurple: Must have at least one aspect that either (1) has a sense of movement, OR (2) defies the law(s) of physics (for example: defying gravity, energy being created or destroyed, etc.). :bulletpurple:

ALL ENTRIES will also be judged based on:

:bulletpink: Impact
:bulletpink: Storytelling (Is your image just a pretty picture, or does it tell a story?)
:bulletpink: Creative interpretation of theme
:bulletpink: Originality
:bulletpink: Exceeding expectations (Is this a stand-out piece from your gallery?)

Submissions require one vote for approval. This is so that we can make sure they meet the contest rules; we are not screening for quality, etc.

To be clear, the admins of CRPhotomanipulation will NOT move your deviation or choose the category to which it is submitted. That is entirely up to the artist. We reserve the right to suggest that a piece of art be submitted to a higher category-- for example, an advanced artist should not submit to the beginner category.

The Prizes

There will be one winner from each category. Each winner will receive:

:bulletyellow: 5,000 (yes really) dA points from Community Relations and Moonbeam13
