Food Photography - back to basicsFood is a necessity for daily life and good health (the right kinds anyway), but food is also fast becoming something of an Art as well as many turn to their cameras once a mammoth baking session is over and capture the delightful dishes in attractive and alluring ways. Since the beginnings of Still Life Photography, food has been a subject and whilst the topic has remained the same - methods, equipment and ease have changed in varying degrees across the years. Food Photography is still a genre that is vastly overlooked and majorly underrated in the art world.Food Photography - back to basics in Art Features More Like This
It all began with Still Life Paintings back in the 17th Century. They were as far from commercial as a style could get and certainly weren't created with selling in mind. However the skill and main aspects that realism painters took back in the 17th Century are kept close to the hearts of Food Photographers today as they grip onto Realism, effects of light, composition and arrangement. Why you feature stolen work?!?!Lately there seem to have been a few myths flying around in particular with regards to how we as Community Volunteers, give Daily Deviations. Many people seem to think that we sit at our desks in dark little rooms and let out evil laughter whilst we purposefully feature stolen work. The dark rooms and laughter - well I can't say yes or no on that one! But I can promise you it's not our intent to give exposure to people who have stolen work. I recently featured a piece of work that turned out to be stolen. However I went into extensive conversations with the artist before I featured it, and with added metadata and dates, it's difficult to know where to draw the line. I've given people the benefit of the doubt before - and it's worked out nicely as their work has been legitimate. Below are some comments I have seen being thrown around the past few days - and hopefully an attempt to bust the myth. Why you feature stolen work?!?! in Deviant Events More Like This

Collage is one of those art forms that immediately sets off heated debate about our most fundamental ideas and visceral feelings about the very essence of art itself.
Turn of the century troublemakers Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso began enhancing their paintings with glued on bits of cut out fabric and other materials, thus neatly blurring the line between the art categories of painting and sculpture. They shifted the emphasis or “meaning” of their painted images beyond an attempted interpretation of the painted “text” to thinking about the artists’ “process” – something wholly separate from the paintings themselves.
And with that a whole new Rubic’s Cube of basic questio

Daily Deviations, or “DDs,” are frequently held in very high esteem on deviantART. After all, what artist does not want his or her work displayed for more than 20 million viewers to see and admire? The benefits of receiving a DD feature include increased exposure for your work and a day in the spotlight for you as an artist. Many people therefore view DDs as badges of honor, awards that make them proud and validate the time they spend in our community.
Be careful what you wish for!
Don’t get us wrong-- DDs are wonderful for the purposes listed above. But, they can also bring a lot of drama upon the artist, especially if they are controversial.
Let’s talk about some of the sources of this drama.
Some people feel that people who post art-- and especially those whose art is worthy of a Daily Deviation-- should have thick enough skin to accept criticism as well as praise. They argue that criticism is part

All of us have heard about feedback events during our time on deviantArt. Many of us have participated in them, while others have declined to do so for various reasons. Some of these reasons include fear of receiving critique on one's own work, fear of being attacked for critiquing someone's work, fear of not knowing what to say, and feeling inadequate to critique a deviation from someone who is perhaps more skilled than we are--especially if the deviation is created using a medium to which we are unaccustomed.
We especially want to focus on this last reason.

However, please do not pity those of us who do, for having a disability does not automatically make someone less "lucky" than others.
It has nothing to do with luck.
I realize from firsthand experience that having a disability is extraordinarily challenging. Living with pain, as one example, must be beyond imagination. Living with suicidal thoughts and not knowing whether you will wake up in the morning because of all the medications you have to take for your disability is terrifying. It takes a lot of strength sometimes just to get up in the morning and face a day that is undou

Samhain: Dante's Inferno is an interactive adventure here on deviantART to help us celebrate Halloween. It is sponsored by a small group of Community Volunteers and a few select community members and backed by Community Relations. The adventure will begin on October 10th and end on October 31st.
In the fourteenth century, an Italian poet named Dante Alighieri composed one of the most influential collections of poetry of all time: The Divine Comedy. In the first book, Inferno, Dante himself ventures through Hell, guided by the spirit of the Roman poet Virgil.
Samhain is a Sabbat, or blessed day of festival, that some Wiccans and some other pagan traditions celebrate in October. It is the day in which the spirits of the dead are closest to us, a day to celebrate those who have passed before us.

This process brought out a very interesting conversation among some members of the CV team. Specifically, we started talking about what, fundamentally, the difference between digital drawing and digital painting was. Does it depend on brush strokes? Is there some technique used on one but not the other? What sets the two apart?

Composition is the way your eye travels over the photomanipulation and where your eye rests. What is the focal point of the image? Is that an appropriate focal point? Recently my team and I worked tirelessly on a project to help improve the gallery descriptions and thumbnail examples. While that project was indeed tedious with almost 4,000 categories in our system, it was also educational. What I learned from sorting through thousands and thousands of categories was that we have a lot of redundancy and a lot of categories that seem to have been created on a whim that are now simply homes for junk.
Over the years, the desire to appease niche communities and people who just wanted a specific area has led to some categories that go up to 4 levels deep, and it's really no wonder it's so confusing for people to figure out where to submit their artwork.
The conclusion I've come to is simplicity. While I'm not about to rip apart everything and make 6 stand alone categories, I do believe that there is a lot we can do to simplify the category tree. That includes some of the following:

Spirit Day 2012"Ultimately, I want Spirit Day to make just one person feel little bit better about his or herself, to feel safe enough in their own skin and to be proud of who they are" - Brittany McMillanSpirit Day 2012 in Deviant Events More Like This
In memory of the young LGBT people who lost their lives to suicide, Brittany encouraged her friends to wear purple on a day in October -- a day that came to be known as Spirit Day. Since then, GLAAD has helped turn Spirit Day into a global event that inspires millions of individuals, celebrities, TV personalities, media outlets, companies and schools to wear purple in a stand against bullying.
While Spirit Day does focus on the LGBT community, I believe that it's anti-bullying message is relevant to every community. It only get's better, if we take the pledge to make it so.
Practice compassion and understanding, and treat others how you would like to be treated and we can make a difference.

My name Ry/Ry-Spirit. I was born in Hong Kong and moved to Australia when I was 8. It was tough moving to a whole new country in a new school not knowing anyone or a single word of English. It wasn't like I didn't want to make friends but I just didn't know how to start. But something helped with that.... art! It helped me break my shyness as well as giving me the confidence to keep pushing forward. I remember this one time, I had to leave in the middle of class to do something, the next day my friend who was in the class said the teacher (Mr Newton) told the whole class after I left, he said 'Ry, remember that name, he will be a famous artist one day.' That comment really stuck with me and motivated me to become

DeviantART is proud to announce More Like This - a new way to explore deviantART. When you find a piece of artwork that you love, More Like This surfaces related artwork, artists, and Collections. The New deviantART CommentsImproving Communication on deviantARTThe New deviantART Comments in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
One of deviantART's strongest assets is the community's ability to bring self-expression into conversation, pushing the boundaries of creativity to a new level. Today, we've improved creative communication by launching a new way to comment on deviantART, with access to formatting, emoticons, and, for Premium Members, the ability to include artwork and files in your comments.
A Creative Approach to Conversation
Sta.sh Writer has been integrated into comments on deviantART in the form of the new "Add Media" button. As you may know, Sta.sh Writer allows rich text editing of literature and journal deviations on deviantART, and we are excited to expand this functionality to more areas of the site.
Add formatting to comments with the formatting toolbar! The Emoticons tab of the sidebar gives you access to official emoticons, as well as community-created emoticons in the Chat-Friendly Emotes category.
The New Profile TabsAs part of an initiative to make deviantART more user-friendly and clearer, tabs on the Profile Page have received a visual and functional uplift! The New Profile Tabs in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
The tabs on Profile Pages (Gallery, Prints, Favourites, and Journal) have been visually improved for consistency, cleanliness, and an overall up to date appearance. Navigation elements have been moved to the left column of the page, and the placement of major elements of each tab have been aligned so that the transition from one tab of one's Profile to another is more smooth, natural, and clean.
In addition, when viewing tabs of your own Profile, you can easily add to that tab! The Gallery tab prompts you to submit artwork, the Prints tab prompts you to submit a Print, and the Journal tab prompts you to write a Journal entry!
Undiscovered (Beta): Unearthing Quality ArtArt Under The RadarUndiscovered (Beta): Unearthing Quality Art in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
Each day, hundreds of thousands of pieces of art are submitted to deviantART. As more and more artists join, create, and share their work, it becomes easy for high quality art to miss its chance to stand out and be seen.
Our new browse mode, Undiscovered, aims to bring new, high quality artwork to the foreground.
Finding Hidden Gems
Undiscovered focuses on recently submitted artwork that has not yet drawn attention or recognition at the levels of Popular or What's Hot browse modes. Using an algorithm that identifies patterns in community behavior when curating content, Undiscovered generates a browsing experience that draws attention to creative art and talented artists that may not receive the same level of attention from other browse modes.
Please keep in mind that the algorithm that powers Undiscovered is still new and we may make changes as it grows in use.

We're proud to unveil the Today page — the new human and dynamically powered newspaper for the community that reflects the stories inside of deviantART as they pertain to art, fandom, pop culture, and world culture.
Designed to showcase a variety of content — including editorial pieces, Journals, contests, and even deviants new to the site, the Today page will reflect the undercurrent of what's happening now — both online and off.
The Today page will improve the accessibility of various areas on deviantART, creating new and easier ways for both our logged-in and logged-out audiences to enter the deviantART experience.

A Guide to Effective TaggingA new method to promote and discover art has been released to the community in the form of Tags! When submitting art, adding relevant tags to your deviations will help viewers discover art of interest to them and give your work more exposure.A Guide to Effective Tagging in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
You can add tags based on a variety of things, be it subject matter, themes, medium used, fandom, or anything else you feel is important.
Use these tips to make the most of tags and help your art to find its audience:
Keep it simple. The less complicated the tag, the easier your art is to discover.
Be specific. If you take a picture of a rose, tagging it as #flower, while correct, won’t get your art as much attention as tagging it #rose will. You can, of course, tag both.
Tag efficiently. If your art is based on Lord of the Rings, tag it #LordOfTheRings and/or #lotr. You don’t need to tag every combination — t
History of Wedding PhotographyThe 1840s was the beginning of wedding photography. There was little commercial photography at the time for the wedding day itself. Instead, it was all about creating memories of the wedding day. As the photographic equipment was limited (i.e bulky and heavy), wedding photography remained in the studio for more than a century. In the 1800s, the only kind of wedding photography there was was a daguerreotype portrait on a tiny copper sheet.History of Wedding Photography in Art Features More Like This
With limited resources, photographers used glass plates, tin sheets, and copper sheets for their photographs. One of the very first couples were Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840. Couples who were poorer did not hire a photographer to record the actual wedding, or to capture them in pose for formal wedding photos. Instead, photographers captured them before or after their wedding, out of formal wedding dress and into their best formal dress. These were always taken in a controlled environment, like a studio, and the photographer would position
Getting the Most out of dA: CommentingUsually, when you read something involving 'Commenting', you think of deviations and the commenting platform that allows other members of the community to voice their thoughts and opinions on the art shown. However, what is pretty evident, and something that most of us may forget, is that deviantART runs on the ability to give and get comments, be it on pieces of artwork, our profile pages, forums, and everywhere else in between.Getting the Most out of dA: Commenting in Art Features More Like This
In a sense, without the ability to give and get comments, deviantART wouldn't be much of a website, much less #1 of online art communities around. Comments are not solely the cause of what makes deviantART what it is, but it has a huge impact on a lot of things. By giving and getting comments, not only do we interact with other members to really make this a community, we also have the ability to get our voices heard.
It's quite an odd concept with us all facing screens, typing out our thoughts and opinions, but one thing we shouldn't forget is that commen
Still Life PhotographyStill Life Photography is much like Still Life art in general, in the sense that the photograph (instead of a canvas) depicts inanimate objects and subject matters overall. Often, objects are grouped together for this portrayal, which the photographer exploits to really create a fantastic composition. Photography allows the artist more of a chance to arrange the objects for capture easily.Still Life Photography in Art Features More Like This
However, Still Life Photography isn't as easy as it sounds. One must think about the lighting, composition, and other matters to really make the photograph attractive and engaging. This is similar to Still Life art, in which Still Life Photography is founded upon.
You could say that Still Life Photography is influenced from the romanticism of traditional painting techniques. Still Life isn't simply the arrangement of objects, it is the presentation and illustration of the natural world, something more than a simple record. Photographs represent more than just what is there, they represent ourselves t
Origami - Art of Paper FoldingOrigami is an art form that transforms paper into a sculpture through paper folding and sculpting techniques. Thus, cutting or gluing paper would not be considered to be origami, but 'kirigami' instead. The name 'Origami' is Japanese, in which 'Ori' is the Japanese word for folding, and 'kami' the word for paper.Origami - Art of Paper Folding in Art Features More Like This
It is generally believed that origami originated from Japan, but, as there are few records, this is not certain. Nevertheless, Japan developed origami into an intense art form that still exists to this day.
In the past, instructions for origami were passed down in spoken form and not written down. Some say that origami first originated in China in 1st Century, in which paper was then brought to Japan by Buddhist monks in 6th Century. Others claim that paper was made in the 8th Century by the Arabs, with Moors bringing the art of paper folding to Spain in the 12th Century. Spain then spread to South America, and as trade routes developed, origami was thus introduced to Europe a

It's been sometimes a tough task, this gallery is used for a lot of people to submit a lot of crap, I'm sorry if I sound too rude, but that's what I feel sometimes when after reviewing all the pictures submitted in a whole week I barely have 30 or 40 pictures that are really worthy. Walkthroughs, alongside tutorials, are always an excellent way to learn. It's really helpful to get educated through a tutorial which tells exactly what to do in a detailed way step by step. However at times what is even more helpful is to actually see the artist in action, there are things you need to see get done by yourself and here is where walkthroughs come into play.
There's always something fascinating about seeing the different stages of the creation process of a piece, and you can always learn from the artists and adapt part of said process to your own.
Besides showing part of this process through images which show the different stages of a piece, and

What is animation?
Animation is the illusion of movement created from the quick sucession of static images with minimal differences between them. Today there is a great variety of animation techniques that include traditional animation (a sucession of frames, drawn digitally or traditionally), stop motion (photographs of real life objects), 3D animation (created with computer software), rotoscoping (tracing a live action sequence, frame by frame) and a large etcetera.
The Digital Art > Animation gallery is intended for animations of all kinds, as long as they were made with digital mediums and they're NOT in Flash or video format (usually in GIF format).
