Adults are completely white, even in summer | arctic wolves live in the pack of some 7-10 members. Wonderful Eurasian wolf (canis lupus lupus) from ZOO Bratislava. I can not wait to see them in their new enclosure - unfortunately ZOO needs to rise money at first to be able to build it. If you want to help the wolves, look here, please: [link] (in Slovak, unfortunately).

INFO ABOUT THE ANIMAL:

Name: Eurasian grey wolf (canis lupus lupus)
Location: Eurasia (From Europe, to China and Russia)
Size: 1.6 m long + 50 cm tail, 100 cm high weight: 80 kg
Diet: medium sized ungulates (moufflon, chamois, saiga, wild boar, red deer, roe deer and livestock), smaller prey (frogs, mice, hares) but also fruit
Conservation status: Least Concern in general. But in some countries, there are only few animals. For example in the Czech republic, there are only some 15 Eurasian wolves, so wolves are critically endangered in my country.
Interesting facts: wolves live in the packs with strict hierarchy. Only alpha male and alpha female mate. Femalethen gives birth to 4-7 cubs. Mother and father both take care of them and then whole the pack helps them to rise the pups | wolves were exctinct in the Czech republic, as people successfully killed them all. Now, wolves are slowly returning from Slovakia and some 15 wolves live in Beskydy mountains. Unfortunately, some people still want to kill them, because they are afraid of wolves | fear of wolves is officially called Little Red Riding Hood syndrome | Eurasian wolves are very adaptable | their colourings vary a lot. | wolves have important roles in many myths, legends and fairy tales. They fascinate people.

Filou | European Wolf | 7 years old | Spring 2011 | Wildpark Lüneburger Heide

Filou is the name of this lovely wolf here. He's not my favourite of the grey wolves in this park (that's beautiful Rico :aww:), but he is very handsome and a cute guy. His ear makes him look like a real "Filou", so some kind of scallywag. He is the leader of the pack.

Nikon D7000 | F 2.8 | 200 mm | 1/500 sec. | ISO 100

Lazy Scar in the morning sun. Chilling while his brothers walk around nervously. Can't think of a creative description today. So: Enjoy the picture!

So, after a long time (and being behind in reviewing and editing photos) here's a new photo of the pack of arctics at Wildpark Alte Fasanerie.
I was there thrice within one week, and while there was no snow at the first visit, it snowed on my second and the snow was still there on my third time there (but I had no time to take photos).
So this is one photo from the two hour stay at the enclosure while it snowed. I love how the background came out bluish in the cold winter light... thus the name :-)

Hope you enjoy. I currently have 50 more photos to be uploaded from the past 6 weeks in the queue, some will make it, others won't.
Also, I will start working on the new Wolf Calendar 2014 voting soon, so please keep in touch!

EXIF data:
Camera: Canon EOS-1D X
Lens: Canon EF400mm f/2.8L IS II USM
Exposure: 1/640 sec; f/2,8; ISO 400
Metering: Manual

Sorry I haven't been uploading anything for the past few weeks! I have been very busy with the Lupinity Wolves 2014 calendar, but now it's finally available on Amazon UK and Amazon Germany, with free shipping to most EU countries and everything :D I'll cover the details in a journal later on...

So here's finally a new upload, one of the photos I took 1 1/2 weeks ago at Wildpark Alte Fasanerie. I just love those arctics, they are awesome :-) Despite very hot temperatures, they were following me around, being all playful, and they were taking a dip in the pond once in a while - although they seemed to be much more reluctant to do so than they were one year ago when they were still yearlings...

Here are two of the two-year-olds interacting nicely. The one jumping out of the water was fetching some kind of stick swimming in the pond and was trying to take off with it, getting past the other wolf. But he was being vigilant :D

I had my camera and lens sent in to CPS because they did a recall on the 1DX for irregular greasing of the AF mechanism which could lead to a camera failure... and I discovered they also have a firmware update available for the 400mm f/2.8 II fixing some issues with a jumpy focus drive. I can't say the camera's focus works much better, but now if it gets a focus lock, it focusses more spot-on than it did before - which especially came in handy for this particular shot :-) It's really tack-sharp and there's no visible noise in the whole picture... it loses a lot by shrinking it down though, you should see it in full size :-)

Happy holidays! (and full view, please :D)
It was not easy to pick a photo for Christmas this time, but since I'm a fool for a white Christmas (and we don't have any snow), I picked one of the wonderfully snowy session in early December.
I might decide on posting several others today as well if time and my dying Wacom permits :D

Here's more:

Yay, a white wolf! This is ol' Nanuk from the wildlife park of Lueneburger Heide. He's going to be 12 years old this spring and is the alpha male of his small pack. He's veeery fluffy.

Ole is definitely one of the most handsome wolves you can find in Germany. And one of the most loveable. Even though he's not hand-raised he displays a gentle curiosity about humans and he's the only wolf I know who reacts when you call his name. Whenever we called "Ole!" he at least turned around or even came over to look at us.

The end of march is comming closer, but it's still snowing every day ... this winter is reaaally weird. I suppose the wolves like it.

First the silver wolf, now the golden wolf. I'm creative!
Kiley is such a cute thing. Her right front leg still looks a bit unfortunate, though. I'm afraid she'll stay the hobbling brown wolf of the pack. Luckily it doesn't seem to bother her too much.

The Arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos, Vlk arktický, Status: Least Concern) from ZOO Brno, the Czech Republic

DID YOU KNOW THAT... the arctic wolf is the only subspecies still found over the whole of its original range? This is largely because it rarely encounters humans.

The Gray wolf called Dartaňan (Canis lupus, Vlk eurasijský, Status: Least Concern) from ZOO Chomutov. I love his voice, so nice and warm :aww:

DID YOU KNOW THAT... there are also black wolves and a 2008 study at Stanford University found that the mutation responsible for black fur occurs only in dogs, so black wolves are the result of gray wolves breeding back with domestic canines?

As I told you, I've been to Klein-Auheim and come back as happy as always :dummy: This time, the arctic wolves were a bit lazy (and I nearly shot only Monja as she modeled also as always ;D) but the european puppies were great and I've got a bunch of good shots of them.
And as an excuse, the arctics howled two times for me :iconeeeeeplz: It was simply beautiful - not only the howl but also Monja while howling and the great light. So this is Monja, singing her song and looking amazing.

... and how can you think, that such a cute, well-behaved woffie could do anything bad? :meow:
A male wolf (I guess the Beta) from Worms had looked the most time quite nasty, but when he sat down in this doggystiled way, he was simply cute. I love it, when wolves do this, but it's quite rare. My wolves from Klein-Auheim never do it and til now I've only got three chances to photograph a wolf like this. Maybe it's too much like a dog for them :meow:

Don't ask me, what was in their mind in this shot, but it looks so much as if Inuq should protect Monja from my bad camera  Oh, I think I compensate my not so good relationship with my brother. I'd always dreamed of a brother like Inuq ;)
