Collage is one of those art forms that immediately sets off heated debate about our most fundamental ideas and visceral feelings about the very essence of art itself.
Turn of the century troublemakers Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso began enhancing their paintings with glued on bits of cut out fabric and other materials, thus neatly blurring the line between the art categories of painting and sculpture. They shifted the emphasis or “meaning” of their painted images beyond an attempted interpretation of the painted “text” to thinking about the artists’ “process” – something wholly separate from the paintings themselves.
And with that a whole new Rubic’s Cube of basic questions about art was opened up:
Is an assemblage of “found” junk

Street photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson called it the “decisive moment”— the captured instant when all the photograph’s elements come together to tell a story in a way a text narrative of thousands of words could never begin to. It is what hooks people, both practitioners and advocate-devotees, on the art form. It is uniquely completely immersive in life— step out into the streets— in which the moment of artistic epiphany can never be guessed at until it suddenly happens. When it is properly mastered, it is as pure as the dawn of each new day, as true as the living organism of a teeming street scene catching a breath as one.

Consequently, the colors, and lines within every stroke upon every canvas and visceral depiction, carry all the burdensome weight of the long intricacies of this subject. With respect to this much maligned, religiously and politically repurposed, perpetually misunde

I got so many inspiring and heart-warming Notes from deviants far and wide -- from those who had just donated to those who had no means to donate monetarily but who happily spread the word to others. Many even selflessly pledged their own birthdays, asking for donations to this great cause in lieu of gifts. Some say that one should participate in charity for charity's sake, and I fully believe this.

The current deviantART thumbnails (the smaller versions of deviations) have served the community well for years; however, there's always room for improvement.

This week, we are going through the hackathon projects that the Devious Technology team worked on, prioritizing them, doing further research, and then deciding how they can be used in the future.Site Update: Back from the Staff Retreat in deviantART Blog More Like This

Two weeks ago, we released comment counts under thumbnail images to Beta Testers. Today, the feature has been rolled out to everyone. We believe that this feature adds more context to the experience of viewing artwork on deviantART. You'll now find comment counts underneath the thumbnails of deviations -- they can be seen when browsing or searching art, and also display in your Message Center. We hope this feature will help bring to light the fact

1. Miscellaneous vs Other
Over the past few months, we've been diligently working on cleaning up the category tree of old and unused categories. While most of this will go unnoticed by the community, what you will notice is the change from "Miscellaneous" galleries to "Other". The reason for this change is simple. The concept of Miscellaneous leads one to believe that it's a junk drawer category for everything under the sun when the intention was to be an "Other" category for deviations that don't fit well in other sub-categories of the tree. We're also working on u
Gallery Makeover ProjectHello everyoneGallery Makeover Project in Community Relations More Like This
Recently my team and I worked tirelessly on a project to help improve the gallery descriptions and thumbnail examples. While that project was indeed tedious with almost 4,000 categories in our system, it was also educational. What I learned from sorting through thousands and thousands of categories was that we have a lot of redundancy and a lot of categories that seem to have been created on a whim that are now simply homes for junk.
Over the years, the desire to appease niche communities and people who just wanted a specific area has led to some categories that go up to 4 levels deep, and it's really no wonder it's so confusing for people to figure out where to submit their artwork.
The conclusion I've come to is simplicity. While I'm not about to rip apart everything and make 6 stand alone categories, I do believe that there is a lot we can do to simplify the category tree. That includes some of the following:
1. Merging categories that ma

I wanted to post a quick update on changes to Daily Deviations. It is important to note that these changes have not been hard-coded so my team is manually following these new guidelines. This means that errors can and likely will occur until the coding is complete, your patience and understanding is appreciated![]()
The following guideline changes are in effect:The 3-month rule is now the 6-month rule, meaning that it must be at least 6-months since the last time an artist received a daily deviation. (This was an overwhelmingly popular suggestion from the community and I agree, it's a good one!)
Daily deviation selectors may only select one daily deviation per day maximum. This has been put in place to focus on Quality vs Quantity.

Why credit and notify?Hi all,Why credit and notify? in Editorials More Like This
It's your friendly neighborhood Photomanipulation and Stock & Resources CVs here, eager to tell you about a problem that has become increasingly common not only in the photomanipulation community, but also in other communities throughout dA. The problem is that people are neglecting to credit AND notify stock providers that they have used their materials.
What is the overall rule and guidance about crediting your stock?
If you want to use other people's resources (including but not limited to stock photographs, brushes, and presets), dA requires that you exactly follow the rules of usage that those individuals lay out in their license or stock rules. That invariably means that you must CREDIT them with a link to their homepage at least, and NOTIFY the providers by sending them a link to your deviation, preferrably by note. Some providers require a direct link to the exact image or resource t

And, of course, our official photomanip contest will start on January 15th.We are still looking for prize donors and groups who might want to partner with us.

When you have a lot going on, sometimes you have to prioritize, and that sort-of fell to the bottom of my many priorities. But, I've been talking with *Zankruti-Murray, who has some cool ideas for getting the project off the ground. Welcome to Photomanipulation Month!Greetings!Welcome to Photomanipulation Month! in Projects More Like This
Yes, you read that right: Photomanip MONTH!
When I first came on board as the Community Volunteer for Photomanipulation, I wanted to have a photomanipulation workshop month, or a "boot camp," to help our community members hone their skills and to help people from outside the community learn more about what we do. ^Kaz-D had the brilliant idea of turning it into a Photomanipulation Month with Project Educate! So, here we are!
This month will be filled with contests and challenges, games and activities, and lots of chances to win fabulous prizes! We hope everyone will learn something along the way as well.
About this month
We see this month as an opportunity for all of us to share what we know and build a stronger community. We had originally conceived of this month as "Advanced Photomanipulation Month," but we figured that might be exclusive to a great portion of our community.

Basically, we are showcasing deviations, news articles, etc. that feature traditional art in a historical sense.
But, Jade! We're a digital gallery. Why should I care about traditional art history?
Gasp! You should care!!Before there was photomanipulation, before there was photography, there was traditional art. It is our roots, our history. The foundation upon which we create.
Think of the masters who came before us, those who blazed the trail for artists of all different genres and media: Monet, da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dali, Rembrandt, Munch, Van Gogh, Picasso, Cezanne . . . so many more. They serve as inspiration for many of us, and you can see their influences today . . . even i

Hello, deviants! In an effort to keep the community informed and to provide the best possible experience for our members, we wanted to inform you of changes to our reporting system.
DeviantART is dedicated to protecting our artists, and in an effort to be able to more quickly handle complaints by deviants who have had their rights infringed on, we have changed the way we receive complaints from the artist or the copyright holder.
In the past, we took reports by the copyright holder in two different ways: An informal report via the Report Violation tool and a formal complaint via contacting the Help Desk. While both of these methods were effective, they presented many setbacks.
The informal report did not gather all the necessary information for a formal copyright complaint and was prone to misuse by well-meaning deviants who would attempt to report images they did not own the copyright to

Top Level Domain (TLD) is the technical name for ".com," ".net," ".org," or ".fr". When ICANN announced that it would accept applications for new TLDs, deviantART quickly realized that someone would try to nab ".art."

On January 24th, 2012, we released an #hq journal regarding Popular results for Browse. In this journal, we described Fair Exposure -- deviantART's algorithm for Popular browse results. Fair Exposure's goal is to showcase the most popular deviations in a variety of styles, genres, and art forms, without bias towards a particular topic.
Since the release of our Fair Exposure announcement, especially in the last handful of weeks, we've noticed a concerted, dedicated effort made by deviants, or groups of deviants, to specifically beat (or "game") the system. Deviations have been intentionally miscategorized in hopes of having them appear "higher" in Popular results. This has, rightfully so, resulted in complaints from deviants who submit to deviantART in a fair and honest manner.![]()

Hello there and welcome to the second edition of Communal Karma.
In the Communal Karma series I highlight the devious little squirrels who have suggested literature DD's in the past month. To do this I will collect the names of the suggesters from the past months DD's. I am aware, of course, that many other deviations are being suggested to our lovely and all powerful overlords but I don't have access to those!
The point of this feature is to make those who support the literature community get seen themselves, a karmic reward for doing good and expecting nothing in return. It might also encourage more people to suggest incredible literature for the site-wide feature, which is also great because it means that the CV's will have eyes and ears all over the site finding amazing unseen gems to share with the rest of us.

Hey
guys. I spent the evening with friends playing in the snow and smiled and laughed a lot, and it was wonderful. It reminded me that I have come a really long way from rock bottom.... however that doesn't stop me being aware that I am still in a bad place.
I posted four things today; Hard, Rock Bottom, Mutant and Get Up. Of all of those, Get Up and Mutant are the two I love the most. Get up is a short story (of sorts) so I don't know how many of you will read it, and of those of you who do I don't know who will understand, but its out there none the less.
My writing tends to go in phases, of dark love poetry and then just dark poetry. I'm sure you can guess why. This seems to be a dark period, but I'm trying to refrain from writing outpourings of emotions. Not because I don't think that is art, I do actually. I very much do. It's just that I have done that before. I have sat and waxed lyrical and tried to be blunt and brutal and honest and raw and unmasked... but that's a
