Sometimes in youth we play crazy mind games. One gruesome game was trying to think of the worst way to die. Or even better, the "which would you choose" version of the same conceit. Another was what would be the worst torture to endure. If there is one international touchstone that best captures youthful fears and wonders in speculation of what lies beyond the veil of death and awaits as possible punishment for our sins, it must be - to the few who have actually read it to the millions who "know" it – "Dante's Inferno." Who does not shiver at the thought of being lost somewhere in the "Nine

I have never found a companion who was so companionable as solitude.
Henry David Thoreau
I always thought Thoreau’s comment was simply a word game— ultimately not of much value and false at its core. A Valentines Day in solitude should mean being all alone and alone means being unhappy, pure and simple. Still, it will turn out in life that the most alone we can feel is ironically in the crush of family and friends and even in the embrace of one’s Valentines Day companion— but lost and unfulfilled in one’s dreams and visions.

When is information true and useful and when is it just “propaganda?” Why in fact is an image or phrase or animated art sequence “propaganda” rather than it simply being a “lie?” What about acceptable lies that define our society as much as they degrade it - - for example commercials that obviously hype a product with untruths or political advertisements full of unachievable platitudes.

The prodigious artistic and cultural exchange that we have all committed ourselves to building, to participating in and to sharing with each other every day at deviantART often occurs in RL on the decks of HQ as well. One of the best aspects of being in my position here at deviantART is the privilege to curate salons with artists of every medium and success level imaginable, art appreciators, writers, and educators from all points of light within the deviantART community inviting them to make the trek to HQ for what always manifests as an inspiring, thoughtful, educative, and enlightening dialogue. RTINJ #8Hopefully you have noticed I have returned, if not . . . well I'm back. And with some good news, note it's not THE good news. As I have stated before, I was involved in a debate among family backstabbing that had to include the legal system. Long story short, we won, only by 2/3 but a victory nevertheless. This means I'll be able to return to college (although may not be the 1 I was at to begin with), and that the debt will still be split among the family. It is insanely unlikely I will ever go back to my last home town (but doesn't include nearby cities), as it has become clear that my father cannot be trusted. So my family has been sheared and as far as I can tell, never to be restored; but I never had much of a relationship to him to begin with, and since his relatives are worse than he is, their existence no longer matters to me. It's sad when strangers are more trust worthy than one's own parents, but society has been collapsing for the last few decades and nobody noticed.RTINJ #8 in Personal More Like This

But if they are pushed beyond said limits however, expect much more than a slight alteration to their persona. Some aspects can become exaggerated to worrying levels, or may stop being detectable at all. Or they could shift an idea set entirely, not necessarily reversed though. These kind of changes rarely revert back to the original state, as the cause is mostly impossible to negate, at least from the afflicted's point of view.
The kinds of changes vary insanely, mainly on a per person basis. As each is unique both in personality and situation. But such alterations can be categorized by; tics, mentality. Tics such as a

Let's just go over what I posted yesterday: I voiced that I have no opinion on guns in America, because I don't live there and as such; don't care. I said that I, personally, am afraid of guns and think they're industrial killing machines. And I posed a vague, hypothetical question that could have been applied to any situation where an old law/doctrine is in effect.
That's it. Nothing more. Harshest word in there was "change" followed by a question mark. Not "ban", not "make guns illegal" and certainly not "outlaw free speech and trial by jury", which some people with a slightly looser grasp on reality seem to think go hand in hand with owning the firearms I said I don't care about.
Well, today, I am going to post an opinion: if you're the kind of insecure, paranoid little twit that flies off the handle when someone poses a simple question, and who holds weapons and the laws that permit them with such religious reverence that you perceive that question as not

It doesn't.
It never has and never will.
It doesn't make a game more cinematic. It doesn't add a sense of thrill. It simply makes viewers (I can't call them "players", as that would imply they are actually permitted to DO something) dread cutscenes, because they have no idea if they're going to be allowed to enjoy them or if they're going to have to watch them 5 times in a row because they fail to hit the random sequence of buttons indicated on the screen.
A game is thrilling ONLY when the player uses the control scheme effectively within the game environment. If the game needs to take control away from the player and lead them by the nose through a cutscene, it's been lazily constructed and as a result: isn't fun.

I sink hours of my time into them, so I can say with a degree of authority: modern games are complete and utter manure.
Why?
Because they're never finished.
In the race to get them out the door, and thanks in total to broadband connections, they are buggy and full of holes.
You never get a complete game for the huge sum of money you're expected to pay for them.
Case in point: Borderlands 2.
I've just encountered a bug that renders a mission impossible to complete (The "Get to know Jack" mission), meaning I won't be able to fully complete the game ..not that I could anyway, because the game I own isn't actually finished.

Only a handful of those, however, can I refer to as being "good". Or even "tolerable".
Having watched them for most of my life, going back to things like Mysterious Cities of Gold and the original Astro Boy, I can say with a certain degree of authority that: Japanese storytelling is a bit wank. Daring and dynamic visuals, sure. Crap narrative.
And it can't ALL be blamed on "bad translation".
There's a wide range of gripes to be had, but chief among them these days is that the major characters, those who one would assume you're to root for, across however many episodes the series consists of, are generally complete and utter dicks.

For my quarter project, I'm doing three Bierstadt master studies (two copies and one original/composite) in oil.
I'm actually not that much of a fan of Bierstadt's work. It's certainly beautiful, but the romanticism gets a little heavy sometimes. I do like how he handles light and composes his scenes--which is why I'm studying him.

Super Squirrels!Squirrels! But not just any squirrels… Super Squirrels!Super Squirrels! in Personal More Like This
The Kickstarter page is up for Super Squirrels—the cute little game I am making with a couple of friends. A simple platform game—with cute squirrels! Collect nuts, run through the forest, be squirrely.
Each squirrel has a unique world to run around in: Northeastern Coastal Oak Forest, California Redwood Forest, Mount St. Helens Regrowth Forest and the Northern Boreal Forest
This project has been a labor of love and learning, that's for certain… Our goal is to create an educational, environmentally aware, mobile game.
Super Squirrels follows four woodland creatures who venture out into the world and quickly learn it isn't as small as they once thought.
The game plot revolves around the adventures of Chip, Ash, Twig, and Red. Along the way they collect nuts, berries, and other items as they overcome challenging environments and evade enemies by working
King Sombra. What's all this whining I hear about Sombra not being bad enough? Or getting enough screen time? Or not being developed enough?King Sombra. in Personal More Like This
Seriously?
Calm the fuck down.
He's going to be back. The lack of exposition confirms this.
Further proof:
When Cadance's magic shield sliced off his horn, we saw the severed horn piece act on its own (melting into the ground). Later we saw Sombra repair his horn completely. What has been established? That Sombra can regenerate (his horn anyways).
What happened the last moment we saw Sombra? He got obliterated into shards by the crystal heart magicyness... and we saw his horn (intact) fly away (towards the viewer).
He'll be back.
Besides, the episode wasn't about Sombra. It was about Twilight Sparkle.
What happened at the end? Twilight was allowed to advance in her studies. Celestia and Luna are preparing her for bigger, badder, showdown that has yet to happen.
My guess is that we're going to see a winged Twilight at the end of this season.

I've gotten so many wonderful, beautiful, comments! I read them all, even if I do not respond to each one. I am so moved that so many people found my little story so interesting! Many of you understood exactly what I was aiming for, and that makes me happiest of all!
Knowing that I was able to communicate my artistic vision (with a fan comic!) feels so triumphant. As I posted each page, I would read the comments and keep them in mind when painting the next page... I would put extra effort into emphasizing certain points and ideas of mine to help better communicate them. I thought it was kind of cute, he was always careful around me, even in his sleep. So

The argument for the nude in art:
Our visual perception of the human face and then the human body has set the basis since the beginning of
human history for our sense of what is beautiful and what initiates all our seminal ineffable sublime feelings
about the nature of love, life, desire, destiny, eternity, ad infinitum. The curvatures and symmetries of the
human body even lay the geometric basis for the artistic structures of all our art forms, not only for the visual
arts but also for literature and architecture. Given the primacy of the body as the beginning of all that we are
in life, and given the eye as the primary receiver for the collection of all information in our lives, how could

The Serenely Powerful Art of `yuumei
In the top half of an hourglass, a polar bear and her cub perch perilously atop a wedge of melting ice, its dripping water becoming the "sand" that is inexorably drowning an urban couch potato figure in the hourglass's bottom chamber. The beautiful yet arresting digital painting is "Countdown" by `yuumei and it is currently one of the most popular pieces on deviantART. It is "archetypal yuumei" in its perfectly balanced blending of a striking lyrically beautiful visual with an underlying urgent social or political message.
Her specialty is digital art in an anime style, but she often employs traditional watercolors and other elements. Her cause is saving and preserving what's left of the Earth's wildlife and its environment; she donates large portions of profits from her artworks to a host of wildlife and environmental organizations and urges all deviants and others to do the same. But what has really been her stand-out achievem
Empathising and AdvisingThe Myers-Briggs system thing roughly divides people into either 'Thinkers' or 'Feelers'; it's the third letter in the clunky, unmemorable four-letter codes that it assigns to personality types.Empathising and Advising in Personal More Like This
I'm INFJ; the F means that I'm a Feeler. Learning this recently has shed a great deal of light on the way that I approach and react to certain situations!
One of the big differences between Thinkers and Feelers is how they handle 'problems'... Even how they see them.
Feelers, generally speaking, tend to speak openly about their emotions, and to offer empathy and support to others who are doing the same. They "verbally process" information, and need to speak about it to 'get it off their chest'. They are not seeking 'solutions' when they do this, as 'venting' in itself is cathartic.
Thinkers, on the other hand, tend to see problems as puzzles to solve. They speak about their own when they want direct help, suggested solutions, and this is how they respond to others expressing their problems, too
Core ValuesWhat things would you say are most important to you? Specifically conceptual things, 'values', rather than possessions or people...Core Values in Personal More Like This
I have a strong set of values that drive me, and which make me feel lonely, because I'm reluctant to befriend anyone who has a different set of values (because of what my own values are)... I know I've only myself to blame for being so picky, but I feel stressed and pressured when interacting with people who don't follow these values in the same way that I do, perhaps in a similar way that a strong moral vegetarian might not feel at ease watching their friend eat a steak. Or something.
I was linked to this thing, which is a list of words that could be used to describe certain 'values': http://www.stevepavlina.com/articles/list-of-values.htm
I went through the list eliminating those which I didn't feel anything much for, or which I felt negatively about, so that I'm left with the ones that I consider important to and definitive of me.

But it seems that this is rare, and most sites don't even list gender or age except perhaps on profile pages that you have to manually navigate to, and even then you can never be sure.
Coming to sites like this one after spending much of my time on my own makes me feel almost 'blind' or something, not being able to see that information without visiting profiles. Some people don't even have that information on their profiles.
I personally think that every community would be improved by making this kind of personal information open and clear and displaying it readily and frequently, such as on every comment.
Some might think that that would lead to shallow judgements... and yes, i
Personality: Self-monitoringA while ago, I talked about the concept of 'high-reactives', which was mentioned in a book that I was reading called "Quiet: The Power of Introverts", by Susan Cain. I'm still reading that book!11 Since I am very slow at it, apparently. I'm reading it in tiny bursts while waiting for stuff, rather than really sitting down and getting into it. Still, whenever I do briefly delve into it, I always seem to learn something new.Personality: Self-monitoring in Personal More Like This
Another thing that I learned from it, which explains certain pet peeves and behaviours of mine, is the concept of 'self monitoring'. It says:
"Self-monitors are highly skilled at modifying their behaviour to the social demands of a situation. they look for cues to tell them how to act. When in Rome, they do as the Romans do ..."
People are either 'low self-monitors' or 'high-self monitors'. I think it's a spectrum, as most of these things are, but maybe you'll be able to associate with one of the binary choices more than the other one, or more than a middle ba
