I tend to keep things close to the hip, and I generally think there are much more qualified people than me, but sometimes its cool to hear perspectives from people at different points along any given road...
The topic: Photography
The reason: Im bothered by what seems to me to be a lack of good foundational information about how to approach photography.
Someone asked me a simple question on my facebook page recently. It was actually the first question anyone has asked me directly about my photography which I think is awesome...im still stoked that people other than my immediate family like what Im doing.
But to be honest, the question disappointed me.
The person simply asked, "What gear do you use?"
Yeah I know....its a simple question, and actually there is nothing wrong with the question itself. And if that was ALL he was actually askin
Grace and GratitudeA couple of months ago, after seeing what kind of photos I was taking with a tablet camera, someone gave me a Canon 20D.Grace and Gratitude in Personal More Like This
I had prayed for one. Honestly. In fact, very intently that day.
Im kind of a tough looking dude...ive got some intensity going on that i forget about sometimes, but there was nothing tough about me when that person pulled out that camera and generously gave me what I had desired so intently. Seriously emotional.
Last night, I spent some time chasing rabbit trails of people who were uploading my images without giving attribution.
I started to get mildly frustrated about it, but I remembered that everything I was using to do this was a gift.
The tablet, the camera, the computer, the software, even the model....even the people who like my work enough to share it.
So I did a course correction. "Metanoia" in the greek. I went onto the creative commons website and registered "Open" as Public Domain. The title chosen by impulse is quite fitting. Freel
Happy New Year and Thank you.5 months ago this Friday, I got a camera.Happy New Year and Thank you. in Personal More Like This
In that time, I have had nearly every area of who I am challenged, and that on the deepest levels...no exaggeration.
I have also experienced some very bizarre and rather large successes of sorts.
I wish that I could explain in words the intensity of this last season of my life, but I'm not sure that is appropriate.
What I will say is this. For someone taking a plunge for the first time in his life, and really risking doing something that he loves, rather than what he "should", the amount of encouragement and positive attention I have received from this community is nothing short of remarkable.
In the two months I have been posting here, I have received an insane number views of my work with Devon, and resulting activity from outside DA. Please believe me when I say that I am not bragging. The truth of the matter is, I pretty firmly believe that the work itself does not merit that level of attention. Very honestly, there are much bet
Readjust your thinking of what is possible for youI have been wanting to write a journal post for a while now about how much I am learning lately about how what and how you think controls the outcome of your life. Computer Crashes and BackupsHey, how has everyone been?Computer Crashes and Backups in Personal More Like This
My computer had a major meltdown (literally) and therefore the untimely death of my 18 month old iMac. My warranty/Apple care ran out in February, unfortunately. I will be ordering a different computer to be built, but it will be two to three weeks before I have it in my office.
I am 99% certain all my photos were backed up on my external hard drive. This experience really nails home just how important back ups are!
What is your backup method?
Mine is an external hard drive that backs up 24/7 (or whenever my computer is on) and then once a week, I pull another hard drive out of my desk and do a complete backup in case there is something wrong/something happens to the main backup. I'd be curious to hear about everyone else's methods. Does anyone use a digital archiver?
Let me know!

I have noticed a lot of hate on deviantART lately surrounding the topic of post processing a photo via Photoshop. I assume the people referring to it so hatefully are simply unaware of what they are truly accusing people of doing.
Let me just say something about this, first of all.
Photography is an art. It is expression. It is very personal.
Second of all, in a technical view, if you shoot RAW, your photo needs a certain amount of post processing. Your photo will not be exactly as you saw it at a scene - it may be very close, but to an expert discerning eye, perhaps your RAW image file needs a touch more contrast to represent the scene as it was truly seen.
Also keep in mind that everyone interprets scenes differently than you do.
If you shoot in JPEG format - guess what? Your camera is post-processing your photo.
And lastly - the first part of taking the

A few simple photography tipsThought Id share a few simple yet effective photography tips for the creative photographer.A few simple photography tips in Personal More Like This
Macro done easy
Set your lens to its closest focusing range and move physically towards the subject until it is sharp.
If you are using longer lenses it really helps to lay down and hold the camera and lens almost like you are shooting a gun, and remember your breathing when shooting.
This is also a great technique for bokeh shots, with a 50 mm at its closest focusing range and background further away you will blow the background to bits.
Donīt be stationary
It is very easy to put down a tripod and just stand on the same spot shooting, instead try moving around a bi, experiment with angles, left, right, high, low until you hit that perfect angle for the scene.
Slow the shutter
You donīt always need a ND filter to block out light to get even slower shutter speed, you can either use this technique with your hand or better with a cardboard (black if you got colored one).

A chat on the phone today with ~Catmagik brought back a lot of good memories. Mainly deviantART memories which we both had a good laugh about, but I miss those times.
I miss the days of #DreamFreeNature, the first group I started. ~Catmagik and I were always making little "plans" or "plots" to try and expose our group and get more members. It was really fun, we would text and chat on the phone to try and come up with these. One such plan was to every day invite ten members each, leaving them a nice compliment, and afterwards watch our member numbers grow. I miss the days of #InYourMindsEye, a group run by ~OpticalIlluzens (someone I really looked up to back then), which I put a lot of myself into. I remember the days before that, when ~Catmagik didn't have her dA account yet. It was just me, by myself, on dA. I didn't know anyone here, I didn't know how the place worked. Trolls are everywhere on deviantART. In the forums, telling you that your site suggestion sucks. In your gallery, saying that you're doing it wrong. In your journal, asking you if ur mad. And of course there are numerous lone trolls roaming around, looking for n00bs (such as yourself) to prey on. Naww, I'm just kidding! You're not a noob.
Trolls live to make you upset. They want to insult your ideas, artworks, interests, and so forth; because they love provoking people and getting a reaction out of them. It's important that you know how to identify, avoid, and deal with the many types of troll which roam and predate deviantART.
There are a few different types of trolls, and it's important that you can identify and distinguish between them so that you know what you'r

( Closed ! ) Big Feature Project !Hello everybody( Closed ! ) Big Feature Project ! in Personal More Like This
Since i almost reached 2000 watchers i wanted to do a watchers Feature, but i had another idea and i really hope that a lot of you will participate.
The concept behind the whole project is that you feature others and in return you will be featured by them.
So if 20 people participate you will be featured 20 times !
- everybody can participate !
- everybody that wants to participate has to write one Link of the Deviation that should be featured HERE
- you have to this journal
- please leave a comment on this journal so that i know that you want to participate
- everybody that wants to participate agrees to do a Feature at the End of the Project !
- for those that don't have the time to do a feature themselves i am going to provide a code that you just have to copy into your own journal
( but i would be happier if you take the time to create the Feature yourself )
- only one Deviation per p
