Jade cleared the top of the hatch to find that it opened in a crevice in the canyon wall. It was clever placement—not too far from the ground but hidden from ground view all the same. Funny, after all her poking around, she’d never found that maintenance tunnel before.
The freezing air nipped at her skin with a painful bite. But despite the cold, most of the snow had already melted into the bare, withered earth and only a little was left in the crags of the mountain. After sealing the heavy metal covering that was artfully camouflaged to blend in with the rock, she slid cautiously down the cliff side to where the group was waiting.
Everyone was standing around Revis, watching as Vyra pressed her jacket to his leg. Jade was surprised to find that she was the one tending to him and, to be honest, more than a little upset about it. But any vexations she had about the Ucretian dissipated when she got a good look at her brother.
He was lying on his back with h

"Hey, I was wondering where you were!"
Casey wiped the sweat off his neck and turned to see his brother sauntering down the hall. He smiled. Well, smiled wider than he was already smiling. He couldn't seem to stop. "Hey, Lance."
Lance was a mess. Dark oil covered his hands and forearms and was smeared across his T-shirt and face like war paint. He wiped his hands on a dirty rag as he approached, but all it did was spread the oil around more. "You look happy."
Casey shrugged, feeling a blush rise to his cheeks again. He walked beside his brother down the hall through plexiglass windows of the training facility, but he didn't feel the ground under his feet. He didn't feel the usual weight gravity pressed on his shoulders. He didn't feel any weight at all. Even after the hard workout he'd just finished, he felt like he could take off and fly. He'd felt that way all day.
"What happened?" Lance asked, a knowing grin creeping over his face.
"Nothing," Casey replied, trying t

This was the story:
Lance must've been in some kind of cell. He thought it was safest to continue pretending to be unconscious, so he lied on a hard, cold floor, unmoving, for a long time. It was about an hour before he heard the metallic creaking of a door opening. Some Caps came in and put him in some sort of transport capsule. It was tight and cramped, so much so that he couldn't sit up. And it was pitch black, so he couldn't see a thing even when he opened his eyes. It felt like he was in a coffin. He was becoming more and more claustrophobic, just waiting to suffocate to death.
Thankfully, though, it was only around ten minutes before the lid opened and he was taken out. They lifted him into what he guessed was a storage unit for bodies, a little niche carved into a wall high above the floor, like what you might find in catacombs. He didn't come out for a long time. The rest of the night and an entire day passed. Lance slept through most of it, but knew he didn't move

Jade's hands were clenched into tight fists. "Why did you do that, Revis? You had no right to do that!"
"Actually, I did." He glanced over the top of her head to make sure no one was coming down the hall, then ushered her inside his room. His roommate, Benn, shouldn't be back for at least an hour, so that gave them some time. Revis hated to admit it, but he wanted this talk with Jade to be over with so he could go check on Vyra. He hadn't been to see her since last night, almost a full day. She must feel like he abandoned her.
"What makes you think that?" his sister screamed as soon as the door shut. "It's my business! Why do you always think you can butt into it?"
You don't know how big a favor I've done you, little sister. "You need someone else who understands your condition. I'm not saying you need someone else, because I know you can take care of yourself, but if the day comes when I'm not here anymore, I just want to know there'll be someone

She hates me.
I know she hates me.
The look she had given him was seared deep into his memory. That look of hurt and confusion and utter betrayal. He would never forget it, and he would never forgive himself for putting it on her face.
He hadn’t meant to be harsh—but he was just so angry. If they had barely escaped with their lives, what did that mean for Lance? It means he’s dead, that’s what. That was the thought that pushed him over the edge and caused him to snap at her. And that resulted in her looking at him like she no longer knew who he was, almost as if she was…scared of him.
Casey spent the truck ride trying to convince himself he didn’t care what she thought because it was all her fault Lance was gone. But every time he tried to be angry with her, he saw that expression on her face. Then his anger melted. He couldn’t do it. Once he had time to cool down and start thinking clearly again, the gu

Her test was scheduled for tomorrow. The officers looked at her like she was out of her mind when she'd shown up and requested to transfer squads. Why would she have such a notion, when she was so good with a gun? Jade laughed inwardly and muttered something about wanting to be good about other things too. Then she'd knocked around a training dummy for a few minutes before they said she could come back and have a proper testing the next day.
She exited the room and walked down the hall, carrying herself with her usual pride and confidence. Maybe she would make the Elite squad after all.
"Jade!" She turned. Revis was jogging down the hall toward her. "We're going to talk to Casey now. You coming?"
Jade subconsciously glanced down at her jumpsuit. "Now?"
"Yeah. What's wrong? You busy or something?"
She squared her shoulders. "No, it's just...I was going to change."
Revis rolled his eyes. "You look fine." He nodded behind him. "Come on."
With a huff Jade followed him as he wal

Casey laid awake that night, thinking about what Faze had said. And about Jade. The conversation in the hallway had sent him into spiral of emotions and he didn't know what to think.
Jade had never mentioned Faze, but he couldn't believe they'd ever been a couple. But there did seem to be a lot she was hiding. He felt guilty when he realized he was curious about what it could be. How did Faze know what she looked like underneath her hair? Had she shown him?
The thought caused jealousy to start boiling up inside him. Why would she tell Faze and not him? Maybe he was just overreacting. There could be a multitude of reasons to explain it. He couldn't jump to conclusionsat least not until he got some answers. Now he was really going to have to fight the urge to ask her about it. She would probably get mad if he did. But what could possibly be so wrong with her that she would want to hide it? He knew it was Jade's business and it wasn't his place to go poking around

The hallway was completely silent, which made Revis's footfalls seem even louder as his heavy boots landed on the steel. Not good when you were trying not to be seen. Why did it have to be so quiet? At least it wouldn't be hard to hear if someone was coming.
He stopped at the thick, tightly-sealed door and pulled the key card from his pocket. Bracing himself for the mechanical hiss, he inserted it into the slot and slipped inside as soon as there was a gap big enough to fit through. Then he hurried to the cell door and unlocked that too.
"Revis," said the soft, frightened, accented voice he'd come to know. "I thought you weren't coming."
He turned around and smiled when he saw her on the cot, knees hugged to her chest. "I told you I would. I just got a little hung up."
Vyra's expression softened and her chin sunk onto her knees. "Okay. I was starting to think you'd forgotten about me."
"I couldn't do that." He crossed the cell and sat beside her. "I promised, didn't I?"

They stayed on the ledge much longer than Jade thought they would, but neither of them seemed to want to leave. The majority of the time was spent in silence, but that was okay. It was a comfortable silence, not like the awkward ones they had shared before. Jade actually found herself enjoying sitting next to him, just basking in his presence. She was shocked when she noticed herself wishing the space between them was smaller.
What am I doing? she asked herself repeatedly. What if this was all a big mistake? After much consideration, she'd made the decision to allow Casey a little bit closer to her. But what if she ended up regretting it? She had not meant to tell him as much as she did. But it had been bottled up for so long, once she started it was hard to stop. It felt good to share it with someone else. And of course, it didn't help that he was such a good listener. She almost found herself wanting to take Revis's suggestion, but she squelched the thought qui

Jade stood before the full-length mirror in her dormitory, checking her appearance one last time. Usually she didn't really care about it, but it was always good to look put-together in front of the commanders. She was dressed in the standard red and black jumpsuit, zipped up to her chin, and knee-length combat boots. The pendant hung from her neck, as always. Then her eyes found the reflection of her face. One green eye stared back at her. The other was covered by a curtain of long brown hair, along with the entire right side of her face. For a brief moment she was tempted to take Revis's words into consideration. But she dismissed it the second it entered her head. Surely the officers didn't care about something as trivial as her face. And if they did...well, that was too bad. She would never reveal that side of her face. Never.
"Jade?" called a chipper voice from the bathroom.
A small girl with an elfish face and blond hair cut in a long pixie style stepped
