Urbex #2Urban Exploration is the exploration of man-made structures. Usually these are abandoned ruins, or components that used to be part of everyday life but are no longer seen on a regular basis by the human eye. This series of articles aims to highlight exactly what Urban Exploration is, how it's achieved and the some of the best Urbex Photographers here on deviantART.
The internet has provided Urban explorers with many opportunities to garner news of new locations, the best places to go to 'urban explore' and what to avoid. Additionally social media means that we can share places that others will never see, and never hoped to see until the introduction of the internet and the ease with which we can communicate. So as this series goes on, we're going to look at some of the top Urban Exploration websites, at the current time, online. Contamination Zone is dedicated to Photographing Urban Decay across the United Kingdom. As far as urbex sites go, i

Food Photography - back to basicsFood is a necessity for daily life and good health (the right kinds anyway), but food is also fast becoming something of an Art as well as many turn to their cameras once a mammoth baking session is over and capture the delightful dishes in attractive and alluring ways. Since the beginnings of Still Life Photography, food has been a subject and whilst the topic has remained the same - methods, equipment and ease have changed in varying degrees across the years. Food Photography is still a genre that is vastly overlooked and majorly underrated in the art world.Food Photography - back to basics in Art Features More Like This
It all began with Still Life Paintings back in the 17th Century. They were as far from commercial as a style could get and certainly weren't created with selling in mind. However the skill and main aspects that realism painters took back in the 17th Century are kept close to the hearts of Food Photographers today as they grip onto Realism, effects of light, composition and arrangement. Props have always been an important part of

Urban Exploration #5 Urban Exploration: The Motives?Urban Exploration #5 in Art Features More Like This
Back in November, Bradley Garrett discussed the motives and politics behind urban exploration at a talk in Brighton. The article afterwards opened up my eyes when I read it, whilst Bradley's views are strong and many disagree with them - he does have an underlying point. "We have a right to explore public infrastructure. Anything funded or maintained (or not maintained) by tax money belongs to us and we should be able to use it as we like as long as we don't permanently damage it or cause harm to the citizen body." What are your thoughts on the legalities and permissions of Urban Exploration? Do you agree or disagree with Bradley? Have you been 'caught out' Urban exploring in the past? Or have you stumbled across an explorer...? Read more here.

Why you feature stolen work?!?!Lately there seem to have been a few myths flying around in particular with regards to how we as Community Volunteers, give Daily Deviations. Many people seem to think that we sit at our desks in dark little rooms and let out evil laughter whilst we purposefully feature stolen work. The dark rooms and laughter - well I can't say yes or no on that one! But I can promise you it's not our intent to give exposure to people who have stolen work. I recently featured a piece of work that turned out to be stolen. However I went into extensive conversations with the artist before I featured it, and with added metadata and dates, it's difficult to know where to draw the line. I've given people the benefit of the doubt before - and it's worked out nicely as their work has been legitimate. Below are some comments I have seen being thrown around the past few days - and hopefully an attempt to bust the myth. Why you feature stolen work?!?! in Deviant Events More Like This

This week I happened across a Photographer who shoots the economy - currently in the UK. If you ever wondered what Economy looks like - and what the recession looks like - in the Photographic sense then wonder no more. Simon Robert's has it captured. What really struck me though, aside from the complete normality and sometimes mundane life that made the photographs, was the comments on the Article that I read about Simon. The BBC Wrote about him yesterday and nearly all the comments were from people advocating boredom. The Irony is that Simon Robert's had, in full colour, photographed our lives. And the general consensus was that it was dull and unimaginative. How very English we are.

"A photograph says that you were so important, I stopped everything else to come and preserve you."
This week Horacio Coppola died. Many will not know the name, but in the Photography world he was pretty awesome. He died age 105, and was famous for taking Black and White photographs of Buenos Aires in the 1930s. But he also photographed normality. Some of his works included egg and twine - quite simply an egg and a piece of twine. Others featured a typewriter, but ultimately he shot normality, the everyday things that people overlooked. He's said to be one of very few photographers who manage to capture the romance, vitality and squalor of a great city. So a legend has died, but somewhere another will rise up through the ranks. Who inspires you? Which historical Artists have provoked you to reach the place where you are now? Or who you aspire to be?

Spirit Day 2012"Ultimately, I want Spirit Day to make just one person feel little bit better about his or herself, to feel safe enough in their own skin and to be proud of who they are" - Brittany McMillanSpirit Day 2012 in Deviant Events More Like This
In memory of the young LGBT people who lost their lives to suicide, Brittany encouraged her friends to wear purple on a day in October -- a day that came to be known as Spirit Day. Since then, GLAAD has helped turn Spirit Day into a global event that inspires millions of individuals, celebrities, TV personalities, media outlets, companies and schools to wear purple in a stand against bullying.
While Spirit Day does focus on the LGBT community, I believe that it's anti-bullying message is relevant to every community. It only get's better, if we take the pledge to make it so.
Practice compassion and understanding, and treat others how you would like to be treated and we can make a difference.

Amanda Drage was born and lives in Northamptonshire, England. Amanda began her art career as an equine artist, drawing horses from a very young age. She has been on deviantART for eight years in which she rose to prominance among the equine art community, her attention for detail, varied mediums, and intimate style catching attention with every piece she posted. In recent years, she began to branch out from equine art, trying her hand at wildlife art, where she excelled. Today, she continues to balance w

There is no volunteer for 3D Art!? What do we do now?
First than anything, let's give a warm farewell to the volunteers who have stepped down from the team recently: ditto9, DpressedSoul, DemonMathiel, StamatisGR and WillowXD
As you can see, one of them is WillowXD who until recently, took care of the Game Development Art and Digital Art > 3D, meaning we don't currently have somebody taking care of 3D Art. Who do you send your 3D suggestions to then? For the time being, please address your suggestions to Moonbeam13 in the meantime a new volunteer is selected.

History of Wedding PhotographyThe 1840s was the beginning of wedding photography. There was little commercial photography at the time for the wedding day itself. Instead, it was all about creating memories of the wedding day. As the photographic equipment was limited (i.e bulky and heavy), wedding photography remained in the studio for more than a century. In the 1800s, the only kind of wedding photography there was was a daguerreotype portrait on a tiny copper sheet.History of Wedding Photography in Art Features More Like This
With limited resources, photographers used glass plates, tin sheets, and copper sheets for their photographs. One of the very first couples were Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840. Couples who were poorer did not hire a photographer to record the actual wedding, or to capture them in pose for formal wedding photos. Instead, photographers captured them before or after their wedding, out of formal wedding dress and into their best formal dress. These were always taken in a controlled environment, like a studio, and the photographer would position

Still Life PhotographyStill Life Photography is much like Still Life art in general, in the sense that the photograph (instead of a canvas) depicts inanimate objects and subject matters overall. Often, objects are grouped together for this portrayal, which the photographer exploits to really create a fantastic composition. Photography allows the artist more of a chance to arrange the objects for capture easily.Still Life Photography in Art Features More Like This
However, Still Life Photography isn't as easy as it sounds. One must think about the lighting, composition, and other matters to really make the photograph attractive and engaging. This is similar to Still Life art, in which Still Life Photography is founded upon.
You could say that Still Life Photography is influenced from the romanticism of traditional painting techniques. Still Life isn't simply the arrangement of objects, it is the presentation and illustration of the natural world, something more than a simple record. Photographs represent more than just what is there, they represent ourselves t
Getting the Most out of dA: CommentingUsually, when you read something involving 'Commenting', you think of deviations and the commenting platform that allows other members of the community to voice their thoughts and opinions on the art shown. However, what is pretty evident, and something that most of us may forget, is that deviantART runs on the ability to give and get comments, be it on pieces of artwork, our profile pages, forums, and everywhere else in between.Getting the Most out of dA: Commenting in Art Features More Like This
In a sense, without the ability to give and get comments, deviantART wouldn't be much of a website, much less #1 of online art communities around. Comments are not solely the cause of what makes deviantART what it is, but it has a huge impact on a lot of things. By giving and getting comments, not only do we interact with other members to really make this a community, we also have the ability to get our voices heard.
It's quite an odd concept with us all facing screens, typing out our thoughts and opinions, but one thing we shouldn't forget is that commen

Traditional Tuesdays #34Howdy peeps? Welcome to the edition 34 of Traditional Tuesdays . This week, like all of the other weeks, I'll be featuring fifteen works of art from the Traditional Gallery. Any more than that might and you might loss interest or it could cause your monitor to fail in an explosion of awesomeness. I would feel guilty if that were to happen, so I'm keeping it at fifteen! The Traditional gallery is a vast storeroom of work that covers many mediums and genres. I've tried to show a good mix of artwork, but I don't have room for them all. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!Traditional Tuesdays #34 in Art Features More Like This

Traditional Tuesdays #52OMG OMFG OMFG! This is week fifty-two of this little article, and I can honestly say that I didn't think it would last this long. The night I started this feature, I was bored and just browsing around the Traditional Gallery. I was finding all kinds great artwork, that for one reason or another I couldn't/wouldn't give a DD. It could be because they had a DD recently, but mainly it was for a link to go back and see what they created next, and if they took it to the next level. Now it's more for artwork that I no longer have time to DD, I can't DD everything! I still find the article fun to do, and I'll keep doing it until it no longer is. So.... here is fifteen works of art that I thought you should see. I can't trust all of you all with anymore awesomeness, you might hurt yourself! Anyway, on with the show!Traditional Tuesdays #52 in Art Features More Like This

Not So Traditional Tuesdays #4My plan is to keep the features fresh for me(and you) and maybe open a few eyes to all the different kinds of artwork that is available while browsing the deviantArt galleries. The things that make one piece of art great applies, for the most part, to other genres. A painter can learn how light and shadow fall from photography, photo-manipulators can learn about composition from a great Manga drawing, and literature can give you the inspiration to try something new or take your work to the next step. You may never try all art forms you see! You can however take what you learn from them and incorporate that into your own work. It could be the difference between stagnating and that breakthrough every artist wants to find! Not So Traditional Tuesdays #4 in Art Features More Like This

Non-traditional Features!I do a feature of traditional art every week, OKAY, almost every week! Just for fun, I thought I could do one without any traditional pieces in it, and this is it. So far I've gotten stuck in the Digital and Photography galleries. There's way to much great work in those galleries to even scratch the surface in the few hours that I've been able to browse through them. So here you go, some of my favorite work other than traditional. This might become a semi-regular feature, every 2-3 weeks or when ever I feel like it. This little feature is now into the double digits of editions . This wasn't something I that had I planned on doing. Literature DD Roundup: June 2012 June Literature Daily DeviationsLiterature DD Roundup: June 2012 in Literature Features More Like This
Why is this year moving so fast?
I have received several notes from people asking why we have dropped from 2 DDs a day to just one in Lit (with the exception of Saturday), so I thought perhaps it is worth explaining publically our reasoning.
As you all know, it can be really difficult to find a good range of Literature deviations that we can feature and trying to find one every single day is a painful task and we would be concerned that the quality of our choices could dip if we pushed ourselves to find one every single day. With just 2 of us now, we have to work harder to find the ones we do. Unlike visual art, we have to spend time reading every single piece we make a decision on and this is time consuming.
If we received more suggestions from the community, we would perhaps consider increasing some days to two, but for now it will remain on one until a third CV joins the team. Please do keep your s
Literature DD Roundup- December 2012Greetings everyone!Literature DD Roundup- December 2012 in Literature Features More Like This
Today is New Years Eve, so before we share the roundup for December, on behalf of the Lit CVs, I wish you all a fantastic 2013!
It’s been a year of progression for the literature community, one I hope you will all join us on the continued journey for 2013. The community isn’t just 4 volunteers, it is ALL OF YOU, and I hope you share your ideas and get involved.
December has showcased some fantastic pieces of writing, and because of this we have actually snuck in a few bonus features. On Christmas day, we had 4 Literature DDs and from mid-December onwards we added some extra DDs over the weekend- something which we will now be doing every weekend!
(ps. Did anyone notice we’d snuck in some extra DDs lately?)
Here is the roundup for December:

Literature News June/July 2012Hello all! As you've probably guessed by the title of the journal and the Community Relations journal skin, this is the monthly update from the literature community volunteers.Literature News June/July 2012 in Literature Features More Like This
As announced last week, CRLiterature is now open for membership. Over the year it has been open, it used to be watch only, but thorns and I want to start building this group into something more interactive and community driven. Over the next few months, we will be adding little elements to the group to achieve this, but we want to know what you as the literature community think you want to get out of this group. Ideally we want to make this a community hub- soon members will be able to cross-post their projects/lit news journals so the information is better spread and we want to encourage more challenges and education too. Please feel free to share your thoughts on this, we want your feedback!

Happy Birthday Moonbeam13!Hello allHappy Birthday Moonbeam13! in Personal More Like This
Today marks a very special day for someone, and since this someone is our wonderful team leader, $Moonbeam13, we wanted to write a journal to say...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DANIE!
Now a lot of you know Danie as the big chief of the Community Relations team, but I doubt half of you truly know how much of a hard worker Danie is. Not only does she have to look after us lively lot (and by “lot” have you seen how big the CV team is?!), but she works on copious behind the scenes projects on deviantART, making this place just a little bit more devious and better for all us Artists out there in the big dA community. Not only this, but she has to have a life at the same time!
Now we have decided to use Danie’s birthday for three things:
1. To wish her a very happy birthday (of course)
The Literature Community ExperimentThis is a typical example of a BeccaJS shower pondering! The idea of this is to try and bring together as many people as possible all in one journal, but not for the sake of making a big number, but to encourage interaction and share useful tidbits. We often say the "literature community" has drifted apart over the past few years and this is just one attempt to try get people to come back together. It's a little hippy, perhaps a far-fetched idea, which is why I am calling it an "experiment". This could be successful and could be a complete fail- only you guys and your efforts can decide its fate! The Literature Community Experiment in Literature Features More Like This
Wow! The response for this has been HUGE!!! Thank you so much all of you who have participated! Don't forget to add CRLiterature to your watch as well as replying to all these wonderful comments!

PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your workHello all!PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your work in Deviant Events More Like This
Well we’ve had a fascinating week so far; a week which hopefully has provided some insight not only to the process of DD selection but helped you understand what we look for in DDs as CVs. As we draw to the end of this week, I bring you an article which will whet your Saturday with thoughts that don’t just apply to the DD feature, but something which should be a consideration to everything you submit to dA. I am talking about deviation presentation.
Why is Presentation important?
Art isn’t always about just being “creative”. There are techniques and skills which develop over time which contribute to the quality of the work you produce and alongside this comes a developed understanding of good presentation.
Good presentation could be anything from cropping a photograph, to spell checking your literature. These are common sense things that in the rush of wanting to show off your creativity can sometimes be

So why don't we make use of that hermit time and do something productive? Get your onesie on, warm up a mince pie, pour yourself a Baileys and let’s get comfortable around our computers!
Project Educate: Critique Week Welcome to Critique Week!Project Educate: Critique Week in Deviant Events More Like This
For the majority of us on DeviantART, critique is an essential part of our experience and development as artists. As much as we love praise or positive comments from our nearest and dearest, most of us are seeking to improve our craft and to be able to shape our Art more effectively. Some of us purely post our work here to get that all important feedback and the extra special people amongst us are on here to give it.
However, to get critique is not always as easy as slapping up our latest piece into our gallery and wait for the responses to come flooding in. In fact if you genuinely want good critique, you do need to make a bit of an effort to get it and get effective, constructive feedback in return.
This week at communityrelations, we are using the power of Project Educate to have a whole week dedicated not only to how to get critique, but how to give it, use it and make the most of what deviantART can offer and hopefully show you that

The dust has settled onto 2013 already, but that doesn’t mean the enthusiasm of the community has dwindled. In fact, with events such as the complaints challenge and the DD suggestion drive, we’ve seen some fantastic community driven initiatives!
In terms of Lit DDs- well let’s just say some of our CVs have scheduled DDs a month ahead because of the volume of good suggestions. Please keep them coming, it means a lot of us to showcase work other’s see as DD worthy just as much as our own eyes!

Categorising Darkroom - Digital or Traditional? On dA, the galleries for Darkroom Photography are split into two categories - Digital and Traditional.Categorising Darkroom - Digital or Traditional? in Art Features More Like This
Digital Darkroom is for Photographs which have been digitally processed or edited with the use of computer software to emulate traditional and alternative film darkroom techniques.
Traditional Darkroom is for Scans of photographic prints and negatives where the images have been physically developed and/or printed using traditional and alternative film darkroom techniques. This gallery is not for digitally created or edited images.
It seems like an obvious difference, right? How much further explaining really needs to be done? Well, just a little, because there are a few exceptions to what you might assume to be hard and fast rules.
Photos created with the involvement of a digital camera should never be placed in Darkroom > Traditional.
What is Digital Darkroom? What is Digital Darkroom? What is Digital Darkroom? in Art Features More Like This
Digital Darkroom is the evolution, converting chemical processes to digital ones, cellulose and silver to pixels and bytes. The first digital camera, weighing 8 pounds with a resolution of 0.01 megapixels, was built in 1975 and recorded black and white images to a cassette tape. The first camera which recorded images as computerised files was made by Fuji in 1988 and the first commercially available digital camera was created in 1990.
The Digital Darkroom gallery on dA is for photographs which have been digitally processed or edited with the use of computer software to emulate traditional and alternative film darkroom techniques. It's also a place for very modern processes like HDR photography, which involves creating images with a higher range of visible tones than regular photography.
Most of the functions available in digital editing software were created to mimic actual darkroom

Community Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?DDs: The deviantART definitionCommunity Voices: What is a Daily Deviation? in Deviant Events More Like This
So, as the title says, What in the world IS a Daily Deviation (DD), anyway?
You know what deviantART says about it, right? Under :faq61: it says:
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
That says nothing about a DD being a perfect specimen of art-- in fact, it doesn't even use the word "art" at all. Basically, as CVs, when we are giving a DD, we are doing so because we think the image is interesting and well-done and deserves your attention. It may be technically exquisite. It may be technically quite good but exceptionally thought-provoking. It may be exceedingly creative. It may be all of these things! Above all else, it should stand out in some way from others in that medium or gallery.

PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the LegendDaily Deviations, or DDs . . . for some deviants, receiving one is the epitome of awesomesauce in the deviantART world. For others, they are a nice way to show off the work of lesser-known artists. Still others treat them as a special way to bring attention to great art that exemplifies works being done by a particular gallery or community.PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the Legend in Deviant Events More Like This
Perhaps because there are so many different ways of conceptualizing DDs, there are also many myths and misconceptions. I would like to address some of those myths by responding to the ones most frequently heard. Please note that these opinions are mine and reflect my experiences with the photomanipulation community, but perhaps they will be informative nevertheless.
Myth 1: DDs should always be perfect.
To many of us, the ideal Daily Deviation goes to an artist with amazing talent whose work draws you in and makes you think, "Wow, everyone needs to see this!" A DD should move you, inspire you, and provoke you to think, b
Photomanipulation vs. Digital Mixed MediaWhat is this series?Photomanipulation vs. Digital Mixed Media in Art Features More Like This
The "Fix that Miscat" series has been designed to help educate deviantART members about the different galleries to which they can submit their art. Tired of submitting to a particular gallery and having your art moved to a different one? We will help minimize this occurrence by examining pairs of categories that frequently get confused and doing our best to clarify them for you.
What is a Photomanipulation?
What it is:
On deviantART, we define photomanipulation as "two or more PHOTOGRAPHIC elements that have been combined to form something NEW."
This means that:
At least 2 elements must be from photographs.
The result must be something new and different, distinguishable from the original.
What it is not:
It does not involve 3D images, even if there are also photos involved.

10 Things a Photomanip Newbie Should KnowHi all,10 Things a Photomanip Newbie Should Know in Deviant Events More Like This
I wanted to talk for a moment to our newbie photomanipulators or even older photomanipulators who are out of the fray. How are you? Welcome to the inner circle.
Here are some things that you (and all photomanipulators) need to know about dA and the photomanipulation community.
1. Stay in touch with the Photomanipulation CV (currently me, Aeirmid).
Watch me. No, that's not an ill-formed plea for pageviews, favorites, or watchers. Actually, I rarely even post art anymore. I am the Community Volunteer (CV) for photomanipulation, which means I regularly run contests, feature art, share news, post Daily Deviations (DDs), and do other things to support the community. It is in your best interest to watch my journal because I post every photomanipulation-related update there. This information is important to you so you can learn about upcoming events, changes in rules, new groups, and other news.

Welcome to Arts and HealthWelcome to Arts-and-Health. We are glad you are here!Welcome to Arts and Health in Deviant Events More Like This
We are not a typical "art collection" group!
Please take a moment to read a little bit about us and our mission.
Arts & Health is about art. And health.
We are a new Community Project but not an "official" dA group.
We are grateful for the generous backing of Community Relations.
We are concerned not only with how art is used to show health and illness, but also with how art can be used as a vehicle for storytelling. We want to show what it's like to live with an illness (regardless of how major or minor) as a means to raise awareness not only of the condition, but also of the human spirit and endurance. At our core, human beings are brave and resilient creatures, even in the face of illness, and we want to depict this triumph while raising awareness of illnesses.
We are still ironing out the format of the group.
We plan to put together a bimonthly (perhaps moving to monthly) "e-zi
Conceptual PhotomanipulationHi all,Conceptual Photomanipulation in Art Features More Like This
While many of us would agree that "good" art tells a story, conceptual art has a concept that transcends the art itself. I wanted to share with you some treasures (some new, some older) I've discovered from the Photomanipulation > Conceptual gallery. Perhaps you will find something new to collect, or perhaps you will be able to see an old favorite with a new eye.
Want to know more about conceptual photomanipulation? Here is an article from Project Educate that might interest you. Hope you enjoy.

Exposed, but not overexposed.
I hope I am introducing some of you to new artists to watch and love.
And if you've loved them before, here's your chance to love them again!
These artists were carefully chosen because their work displays not only technical prowess and knowledge of the medium, but also a great deal of creativity. They are always imitated but never duplicated. They make me want to reach inside myself and be a better artist-- learn more, be more patient, try and try again. I hope you will also get inspiration from these pieces.
Celebrating Diversity #3Hello, everyone!Celebrating Diversity #3 in Deviant Events More Like This
When we don't see enough of a particular art form, it is difficult for us to understand or appreciate it. This project aims to bring you features that you might not have seen otherwise from a variety of galleries around dA. For example, I tend to live and breathe photomanipulations and (to a lesser extent) digital art, and I really enjoyed taking a moment to browse the non-photomanipulation galleries for treasures. I found many, and I hope you will enjoy the features I have chosen.
