She hates me.
I know she hates me.
The look she had given him was seared deep into his memory. That look of hurt and confusion and utter betrayal. He would never forget it, and he would never forgive himself for putting it on her face.
He hadn’t meant to be harsh—but he was just so angry. If they had barely escaped with their lives, what did that mean for Lance? It means he’s dead, that’s what. That was the thought that pushed him over the edge and caused him to snap at her. And that resulted in her looking at him like she no longer knew who he was, almost as if she was…scared of him.
Casey spent the truck ride trying to convince himself he didn’t care what she thought because it was all her fault Lance was gone. But every time he tried to be angry with her, he saw that expression on her face. Then his anger melted. He couldn’t do it. Once he had time to cool down and start thinking clearly again, the gu

Casey laid awake that night, thinking about what Faze had said. And about Jade. The conversation in the hallway had sent him into spiral of emotions and he didn't know what to think.
Jade had never mentioned Faze, but he couldn't believe they'd ever been a couple. But there did seem to be a lot she was hiding. He felt guilty when he realized he was curious about what it could be. How did Faze know what she looked like underneath her hair? Had she shown him?
The thought caused jealousy to start boiling up inside him. Why would she tell Faze and not him? Maybe he was just overreacting. There could be a multitude of reasons to explain it. He couldn't jump to conclusionsat least not until he got some answers. Now he was really going to have to fight the urge to ask her about it. She would probably get mad if he did. But what could possibly be so wrong with her that she would want to hide it? He knew it was Jade's business and it wasn't his place to go poking around

The test was forgotten. As soon as she got Casey back to his room, Jade went straight to the confinement wing like Revis told her, even though she was supposed to go back to the training facility. Suddenly the examination didn't seem nearly as important.
"Revis?" she called as she jogged down the hall toward the cells. "Revis!"
"Over here," he answered, stepping out from a doorway.
A loud crashing noise came from inside the room, like a chair had been thrown.
Jade walked up to him. "Revis, what's going on? What's going on in there?"
She made to go through the door, but Revis barred it with his arm. "Wait, Jade. Don't go in."
"Wait? Why'd you tell me to come down here if I can't go in?"
He glanced over his shoulder into the room as another crash sounded, louder and harder this time. "Just hold on. Tamm and Jarrin are getting her restrained."
"Restrained?" She tried to peer over Revis's shoulder. "Why does she need to be restrained?"
"She's ah " He looked

For what felt like an eternity, Casey drifted in and out of consciousness. Sometimes there was nothing, just black, and he was blissfully unaware of his pain. Then sometimes he was awake in a confusing, muddled blur of shifting images and colors and he could hear people talking, but their voices were warbling roars echoing inside his head. Sometimes he could see forms bending over him, could feel gentle hands on his face and wrapping bandages around him. He could feel his body shaking uncontrollably. Then there were those in-between stages where a mix of fragmented dreams and nightmares swirled around through his fevered brain, causing him to toss and turn and cry out. He saw his parents in his dreams. He saw Lance in his nightmares. He saw the Caps and the locker beam in all of them. How many times did he see Lance being locked? Too many. Images of his brother wearing one of those helmets, his eyes blank and unseeing, fighting alongside the Ucretians and enslaving the pop

"Hey, I was wondering where you were!"
Casey wiped the sweat off his neck and turned to see his brother sauntering down the hall. He smiled. Well, smiled wider than he was already smiling. He couldn't seem to stop. "Hey, Lance."
Lance was a mess. Dark oil covered his hands and forearms and was smeared across his T-shirt and face like war paint. He wiped his hands on a dirty rag as he approached, but all it did was spread the oil around more. "You look happy."
Casey shrugged, feeling a blush rise to his cheeks again. He walked beside his brother down the hall through plexiglass windows of the training facility, but he didn't feel the ground under his feet. He didn't feel the usual weight gravity pressed on his shoulders. He didn't feel any weight at all. Even after the hard workout he'd just finished, he felt like he could take off and fly. He'd felt that way all day.
"What happened?" Lance asked, a knowing grin creeping over his face.
"Nothing," Casey replied, trying t

Her test was scheduled for tomorrow. The officers looked at her like she was out of her mind when she'd shown up and requested to transfer squads. Why would she have such a notion, when she was so good with a gun? Jade laughed inwardly and muttered something about wanting to be good about other things too. Then she'd knocked around a training dummy for a few minutes before they said she could come back and have a proper testing the next day.
She exited the room and walked down the hall, carrying herself with her usual pride and confidence. Maybe she would make the Elite squad after all.
"Jade!" She turned. Revis was jogging down the hall toward her. "We're going to talk to Casey now. You coming?"
Jade subconsciously glanced down at her jumpsuit. "Now?"
"Yeah. What's wrong? You busy or something?"
She squared her shoulders. "No, it's just...I was going to change."
Revis rolled his eyes. "You look fine." He nodded behind him. "Come on."
With a huff Jade followed him as he wal

The hallway was completely silent, which made Revis's footfalls seem even louder as his heavy boots landed on the steel. Not good when you were trying not to be seen. Why did it have to be so quiet? At least it wouldn't be hard to hear if someone was coming.
He stopped at the thick, tightly-sealed door and pulled the key card from his pocket. Bracing himself for the mechanical hiss, he inserted it into the slot and slipped inside as soon as there was a gap big enough to fit through. Then he hurried to the cell door and unlocked that too.
"Revis," said the soft, frightened, accented voice he'd come to know. "I thought you weren't coming."
He turned around and smiled when he saw her on the cot, knees hugged to her chest. "I told you I would. I just got a little hung up."
Vyra's expression softened and her chin sunk onto her knees. "Okay. I was starting to think you'd forgotten about me."
"I couldn't do that." He crossed the cell and sat beside her. "I promised, didn't I?"

Vyra's hold on his arm was like a vise as he pulled her through the frantic throng of people. Everyone was beginning to get over the initial panic triggered by the alarms and remember the drills the officers ran every once in a while in case there was ever a need for a mass evacuation. People came to their senses and stopped screaming and scurrying around. Slowly, they began to fall into lines, and the lines started to head toward the nearest exit routes.
Revis pushed through the mass of bodies, fighting to keep himself and Vyra from being trampled by pounding feet. He'd lost sight of Jade in the chaos, so he just had to hope she would be trying to reach him too. Although, he wouldn't be surprised if she'd decided to leave him behind. She was obviously furious about what he'd done. But he had to make sure she made it out safely.
It was a struggle to get through, and he was afraid he may have knocked a few people over in the process, but finally he made it to the table hi

This was the story:
Lance must've been in some kind of cell. He thought it was safest to continue pretending to be unconscious, so he lied on a hard, cold floor, unmoving, for a long time. It was about an hour before he heard the metallic creaking of a door opening. Some Caps came in and put him in some sort of transport capsule. It was tight and cramped, so much so that he couldn't sit up. And it was pitch black, so he couldn't see a thing even when he opened his eyes. It felt like he was in a coffin. He was becoming more and more claustrophobic, just waiting to suffocate to death.
Thankfully, though, it was only around ten minutes before the lid opened and he was taken out. They lifted him into what he guessed was a storage unit for bodies, a little niche carved into a wall high above the floor, like what you might find in catacombs. He didn't come out for a long time. The rest of the night and an entire day passed. Lance slept through most of it, but knew he didn't move

Jade's hands were clenched into tight fists. "Why did you do that, Revis? You had no right to do that!"
"Actually, I did." He glanced over the top of her head to make sure no one was coming down the hall, then ushered her inside his room. His roommate, Benn, shouldn't be back for at least an hour, so that gave them some time. Revis hated to admit it, but he wanted this talk with Jade to be over with so he could go check on Vyra. He hadn't been to see her since last night, almost a full day. She must feel like he abandoned her.
"What makes you think that?" his sister screamed as soon as the door shut. "It's my business! Why do you always think you can butt into it?"
You don't know how big a favor I've done you, little sister. "You need someone else who understands your condition. I'm not saying you need someone else, because I know you can take care of yourself, but if the day comes when I'm not here anymore, I just want to know there'll be someone
