Thursday: Random Phrase Art Contest!Happy Thursday!
I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving last week, and are rested up and ready for an art contest this week! Using a random phrase generator, your task is to make a piece of art depicting your random phrase!
Here's how to participate:
Use this random phrase generator to get a random two-word phrase. It's best to use the first one that comes up, but you may choose another.
Draw this phrase, depict it in a photograph, or write about it! Any medium is accepted. However this phrase inspires you, we want to see it!
Be sure to include your random phrase in the description of your piece! Without this, we won't be able to properly judge your piece. It's also helpful to indicate that your entry is for :dev

This week, we're continuing the love trend. We're doing an art creation contest. However, there's a twist -- you must use three pre-determined items in your piece!
We want you to create a deviation including three specific items that revolves around our theme of love:
Your deviation must contain these images:
How you incorporate these items around the theme of love is up to you!
Of course, you may use more than the objects above, but all three of those objects must appear. Feel free to create whatever inspires you! Maybe someone is creating a model tree with olive-colored leaves in a bottle to give to his love. Or, maybe two olives are sitting in a tree, sipping wine from a bottle. Whatever your mind creates, we want to see it!

Photography Troubleshooting:How to Photograph FoodMany of us lament about a lack of subjects to Photograph - and almost just as many of us create something on a daily basis that with a bit of presentation, can look like a masterpiece. Food is one of the most accessible Photographic subjects and if you've no idea where to start, hopefully this article will give you a few pointers. Firstly, you don't need an expensive D-SLR in order to capture some of the food masterpieces you see around.Photography Troubleshooting:How to Photograph Food in Deviant Events More Like This
The above was taken with a Sony Cybershot which is a good quality point and shoot camera. As you can see, the focus is crisp, the quality is good and the lighting is adequate. It works well - and it's easy enough to achieve whether you have a D-SLR or something smaller.
Before you start cooking - get prepared. It's the simplest easiest thing to say and you'll likely roll your eyes at such a mundane instruction but there have been many times when I've found mysel
Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing AutumnFor many Photographers, Autumn is now officially here and is one of the most exciting seasons to capture in terms of colour, change and vistas. Early morning mist, late afternoon sun, orange, red and golden hues - Autumn has a lot to offer in many countries. If you're like me, Autumn often arrives all at once and it can be tricky to know how to make the best of the season before it's over. A couple of days of high winds and rain can ruin the best Autumnal captures by ripping the leaves down before you've even got the chance to snap - so it's great to be prepared for the season.Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing Autumn in Deviant Events More Like This
Leading lines are particularly useful. Yet so many people quote ' Look for leading lines...' or 'You've captured the leading lines here perfectly' and really do we even know properly what they are? The purpose of a leading line is to draw a viewers eye into the photograph and then on a journey - through it. Think of it as a visual narrative. They can be intentional and ind

Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing FireworksWith the 5th of November looming - and of course Christmas and New Year bringing the opportune moments for fireworks - it seemed useful to put together a small troubleshooting guide for those that are going to venture out with the camera. The 5th of November in the UK is known as Bonfire night - the day when, many years ago, the plot to blow up the houses of parliament was thwarted. Nowadays when officials discover a terrorist plot, they're pat on the back and life goes on. But back in those days, a whole day was set aside for celebrating. And now, in the modern age, up to two weeks are spent setting off fireworks. So first and foremost, if you can - shoot it in RAW mode. It's great for after-tweaking and especially with white balance and sorting out flaws. We're drawing on the expertise of WhenPigsFry in order to give you as many tips as possible. He's part of a crew that puts on firework displays and thus sadly misses the chance to shoot them a lot of the time. “You don’t take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it"
I read an article this week that said something along the lines of how every moment is a fresh reality. Every now is a beginning. Every now is a chance to restart. With those thoughts came the declaration that we should learn to photograph in the moment rather than work ourselves up into a frenzy of trying to create moments for ourselves. Ultimately I feel that it's a bit of both. This past week I've spent some time doing professional shoots with babies and used them as my photographs of the day. I've then been surprised and a little dejected when the following day, an opportunity didn't just fall into my hands. Sometimes though, it's good to leave the tripod at home, forget the filters and the flashgun and just shoot with free hands, fingers crossed, hoping for the best. Unless, like me, you are prese

This was unknown to me as well as a few others that I had checked with. I was sent a note to clarify what went on, and asked for permission to share it with you today to clarify any issues.
I'm noting you today regarding your use of the Commissions widget.
While we understand and appreciate your desire to help your fellow artists with a charitable project of this type, unfortunately taking donations via the Commissions system is not a permissible usage of the widget. While your intentions were valid, unfortunately allowing such usage would open us up to many other areas of abuse by those with less noble intentions.
As a result of this, the commission purchases have been refunded to the original buyers and the funds removed fro

Within our team, we agreed that the 2nd team, DieWildPixieDragon, deserves a prize as well, not only for getting so far in the contest but also for their team spirit. We would like to give 1000 points from our prize to each member of that team. I guess it would be easier if you do that when you are sending the points. Can you please send 1000 points to each of them, and divide the rest between us? "
So both finalists will receive prizes!
After a long wait for all the games... We have our winning team!
The 4 members of the winning team will each receive:

Art exists across many media, from the very static to the super dynamic. Moving-picture media is a great subject matter, and it is the inspiration for this graphic illustration.
This design began on tracing paper with a sharpie marker as fast and furious lines over a pencil drawing. Knowing that this would be a shirt graphic and wanting to mix up the styles on the collection, I was happy with the drawing but wanted to move a different direction. In searching through images of movie-making and projecting systems, old-school projector technology caught my eye as a relic of times past. It’s all about following the inspiration, and the imagery of this machine that existed as a building block for the film technology we

New to the deviantART T-Shirts & Gear team, we'd like to introduce Forest Stearns ($draweverywhere), Art Director of deviantART Brands. Recently at deviantART, we tried out a small-scale collaborative program, bringing in outside artists to illustrate pieces for the seasonal clothing line. For the piece ALL dAY EVERY dAY, I’m proud to introduce Tony Van Groningen, or tonybricker here on dA. It’s always a pleasure to hand an artistic brief off to an artist and have them come back with an exciting piece that can go a few rounds in collaborative sessions to make final. Working collaboratively brings multiple viewpoints to the drawing board and adds a great deal of richness to successful pieces.
Apparel Collection: Deviant CursiveToday, I'm thrilled to tell you about Cursive. This design was a definitely trying, but it worked out well in the end. Plus, I had fun in the process and want to share with you this little art tip. Move your whole body as you draw for fluid strokes and dynamic lines. It really works and I had fun practicing that technique during this piece.Apparel Collection: Deviant Cursive in Personal More Like This
Sometimes the simplest pieces take the most time to perfect. It's one thing to draw a word all crazy and let the color scheme carry it visually, but to write words in an elegant form can be difficult to perfect. You'll see throughout the story of this piece many iterations the piece went through. I think I wrote this out over 100 times before I felt that it had the right essence.
The concept started in pencil, using many variations of letter forms and fonts to see if one of them would catch my attention. Script styles quickly caught my eye, but I was not sold on which medium to use. So I explored many.
I went through page after page of co

This piece was spawned from a series of other works I had done in many different medias. In life, there’s a lot of black-and-white. To maintain order, things are sorted into categories and organized into piles. Signs all around us dictate what we can and can’t do, but rarely do they inspire us to create and imagine. When brainstorming this shirt, I very clearly imagined standing in front of a stark door, and on it was written “NORMAL” in black and all caps. Simple. Nothing fancy. Serious.
Another vision appeared in my mind as I was brainstorming. The same door, the same authoritarian font, but this time, someone had scrawled something over the text, taking “NORMAL” right out of the equation, and leaving a beautiful, dripping reminder that sometimes it’s the ri
Apparel Collection: Beetle BlocksBeetle Blocks is an exciting visual drama where determined insects interact with a blocky font that reads “deviantART.” Are these insects building with the letters, or raging against them? That is the ultimate beauty of art is that it’s up to the beholder to translate the piece and determine its intention. Put on this shirt when working with a powerhouse team, where the minds of many are more successful than just one. This exciting piece is the third in the collection where I had the honor of collaborating with another artist to bring the design to life. It’s very exciting to collaborate with artists who can bring an idea to life from something as simple as a sketch. tonybricker led the way with this pursuit, and we were able to go a few rounds of development to end on an outcome much more robust than either of us could have developed on our own.

The concept of this piece came to me after messing around with gold-colored aluminum foil worn over my teeth while dressed up in costume, giving the camera a growling look. Looking at the photo taken, I felt as if I had just become one of the many wacky characters I draw so often. The overall feeling was worth exploring in a drawing. Showing your teeth is a powerful and primal reaction, but rather than pimping out my grill, I thought it would be interesting to wear that look on a shirt or hoodie.
I have a healthy fear of creatures in nature that could eat me live, so this idea of giant teeth worn across the chest seemed empowering. Grizzlies, wolves, wild dogs, zombies

We love creatures of all shapes and sizes. I grew up with dogs and have always loved them as friends and adventure buddies. This concept started out as sketches in my black book, and I worked out many styles.
From foxes to long cats to wolves to simple barking dogs, I was drawing them all in marker, ball-point pen, and pencil. I liked that each of them had a different feeling that was really accentuated by the choice of drawing tool.
During this process, I went to a drawing party, and there was a fun little canine there named Dexter. I considered him for the piece, along with some other dog friends of the same breed. Using brush pens, china crayons, and thick markers, I ended up with a multi-media piece that I think truly captures this little guy’s atti

Once in a while, I stumble upon a craft so original that it doesn't fit into the usual Artisan Crafts sub-categories. It most often is found under "Other". Of course, this does not mean that it doesn't deserve as much love as a yummy fondant cake or an intricate piece of jewellery It just means that most times this piece is outside of the usual spotlight.
This article is an homage to some of these crafts that are usually unseen and unrecognised I hope you will find something here that you never knew existed and that it will stir up some creative feelings within you.

I have been around deviantArt for quite some time but mainly drew, except a few (really bad) self portraits. Then I found some really great photos and wanted to take some myself - of course I couldn't with a point-and-shoot-camera but I still tried. I wanted a reflex camera so bad but I waited a few months until I was sure that I would take photography serious because such a camera isn't the cheapest thing. At christmas 2011 I finally got one! I realize that there is a whole team behind the creations of Artisans d’Azure. Did it start off as a team?
Well, everything started off during the summer of 2005 , when Samuel, the owner of "Les artisans d'Azure" and one of his friend made their first armor for a Live action roleplaying game. People were impressed, at this time armor was rare in our region even if LARP was popular. So Samuel began selling leather armor to his fellow players making his name as a fine artisan. In just one year, he needed to hire his first employee. A couple of years later, he opened the workshop and store "Les Artisans d'Azure" in Montreal that's when I (Marc) joined them. Actually we supply a bunch of website and store around the world for our product fro

Hello everyone! I'm here to talk about the journey that I went on earlier today.
Last week I was asked by Ayame-Kenoshi if I would be willing to help distribute cards from the holiday card project, so naturally I said that I would, and I started calling my area hospitals to find out if any of them would accept the cards.
Eventually, I had to call UMass Medical Center, which is about a half hour away from where I live, and I got them to agree to take in cards. I was quite excited.
So yesterday evening, I got home from work and I found a package sitting on my table, and inside of it were 200 cards! I opened the box to make it sure was filled with the cards, then my mom and I took the time to look through all of them. There were some really amazing ones!

What Is Flash Fiction?
Put simply, flash fiction is a very short story. Lengths can vary from as few as six words (i.e. Hemingway's famous Baby Shoes) to a thousand, sometimes more. It depends largely on the outfit for which the author decides to write a piece of flash fiction. For the

On my journal, =Flyvapnet wrote that '[i]t smacks of a good-old-boys system, wherein Deviations are considered for recognition only if they're suggested by those who have an in-crowd relationship with someone in the award-giving hierarchy'. In fact, many of them produce great art and have fun personalities just like you and me! Here's what we found out:April's Challenge: Stalk a $taffer or CV Results in Art Features More Like This

Critique Contest: ALL Mediums!AboutCritique Contest: ALL Mediums! in Deviant Events More Like This
In my opinion, critique is commentary on art or literature aimed at giving direction for improvement, encouraging artistic growth, and promoting education. These three elements are vitally important to any artist, in any medium because they provide a cornerstone for advancement.
On deviantART, we see entire communities dedicated exclusively to giving and receiving critique because artists of all levels understand the benefits of critique. February's Solutions Sanctuary project is focused on critique because many, many people complain that there just is not enough of it on dA. Well, time to put your keyboards where your mouths are, my fellow deviants!
For this contest, I challenge you to give at least one other deviant a critique. You may use the critique feature or leave critiques in comments. You may critique work from a group, from your watchlist, from the

On January 1st, I challenged everyone in the deviantART community to suggest a lot of Daily Deviations. I did this for two main reasons: A) `thorns told people to put up or shut up and I decided to listen; B) I was tired of hearing people complain about supposed favoritism surrounding whose DD suggestions are accepted by the CVs.
Well, you all rose to the challenge beautifully. Over 200 suggestions were sent into the CVs by the people that participated in my little challenge. The first featured work pieces that received DDs, the second featured one half of the rest of the suggestions and this
Points Challenge: Be A Hero, Report a Miscat!Points Challenge: Be A Hero, Report a Miscat! in Deviant Events More Like This
Miscats: What are they? Why do they matter? How do they happen?
REMINDER: This challenge is only open until October 31st! Get your comments in by then or miss out on points!
A "miscat" is a deviation that has been submitted to the wrong gallery, or mis-categorized, on deviantART. For example, literature does not belong in the photography gallery, even if there is a photograph supplied as a preview picture for the writing.
They matter for several reasons. Miscats make searching for specific types of deviations tedious, particularly if you are looking for newer submissions. A search of the Writing Tutorials gallery for popular deviations in the last 24 hours brought up four deviations, all miscats. Miscats also make the site disorganized and even harder to navigate for new comers. Lastly, they make your work harder to reach by taking up space in the wrong gallery.
I'm sure others can think of reasons why miscats are annoying, and I invite you to leav

I have to admit, I'm guilty of not browsing all of the galleries as much as I should. I love the Artisan Crafts world and I often get lost in its galleries and forget about the rest, so this time I went through all of the galleries looking for awesome art for this article, and I discovered forms of art I didn't even know about! It was a fantastic experience and I hope this series of articles will encourage you to do the same.
PE: Tolerance Towards Daily DeviationsIf you're like me, one of the first things you do every morning is turn on the computer to check the DDs for the day, if you make this a habit sooner or later you'll see something featured that you won't like at all, making you spill your morning coffee all over the screen.PE: Tolerance Towards Daily Deviations in Deviant Events More Like This
Oh the crime! That poor coffee going to waste.
Before you hit the Caps Lock button and begin an essay about the drop of quality of DDs, stop. Take a deep breath, maybe walk around for a bit to cool down, and think about what you're going to do. To begin with, complaining about the DD leaving a comment is extremely disrespectful for the artist because most of the time, they didn't even ask to be featured. Instead, take a moment to consider why was it picked, DDs are chosen for far more than just being visually attractive, as the article Daily Deviations - The Myth and the Legend explained; we often look f

The world of crafting is fascinating and never ending. We have been crafting since the first human molded some mud into a pot, and a seemingly endless list of crafts has been created since. Some crafts are very well known, and you have probably dabbled a bit into them yourself... but some of them are a lot less known. I put some examples together, please enjoy them and leave a comment below letting us know how many of them you already knew if you know any unknown crafts, feel free to share them with us!
Extra credits if you already tried some of these!
Note: These are NOT totally obscure crafts that are only practiced in remote places of the world or that require specialized equipment, I chose crafts that should be easy enough to pick up but not a lot of people are doing.
