Warm early morning sunlight lifts the cold night's veil of fog high in AigŁestortes y Sant Maurici National Park in the Spanish Pyrenees. A dead, withered pine tree stood out against the bright flare lightening up the valley. Dead trees like this one can be constantly found at the higher altitude plateaus throughout AigŁestortes and are a constant reminder of the powerful forces of nature, lightning strikes in this case.

I recently went through my files from my trek in the Spanish Pyrenees last summer, visiting the amazingly beautiful Parque Nacional de AigŁestortes y Lago de San Mauricio, as I was planning this year's visit and decided to give it some processing love.

Just the other day, I learned about the terrible flooding and mudslides that hit the area these past days due to an accumulation of heavy rainfall and the fast melting of this year's massive snow-pack; taking out bridges, roads and damaging houses. While looking at this picture, it's hard to imagine this peaceful looking environment can be host to such direful events. I hope the image can bring a few seconds of visual distraction to all those affected by recent tragedies!

Dolomites, Italy
Autumn 2012

After numerous arduous hikes during the last 4 weeks I'm proud to present a lot of new work. I traveled through the Eastern Alps: from Switzerland to South Tyrol and the Dolomites to Slovenia. I'll upload them here on DA during the next days. Part two of my Alp series 2012 contains the images from northern Italy. Where I shot the Stelvio National Park and the UNESCCO World Heritage Site Dolomites. At the middle of October the autumn was on it's peak and after some heavy snowfall till the valleys the landscape presents winterly. English descriptions and more shoots will follow soon!

An Teallach, UK
Winter 2012

With the aim of shooting some Scottish Landscapes in dynamic weather I started my trip to Great Britain in mid-November and traveled for about 5 weeks trough the country. My journey took me from the south coast of England via Northumberland to Scotland. In Scotland I traveled from the Isle of Skye to Caithness, Torridon and Assynt. As expected the weather conditions were very contrary (snow, sun, storm, rain). The exposed position at the Atlantic Ocean is responsible for the unpredictable weather in western Scotland. Often it’s possible to experience several seasons within one day. Although it often wasn’t very easy to keep my camera dry, I was rewarded with a variety of spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

In early December winter comes to northern Scotland. Ice covered the countless lakes and the frequently showers turn into snowfall. In the last part of my UK series I show the shots from Wester Ross. The photos were taken during several hikes in the spectacular mountainous regions An Teallach and Torridon. I'll upload them here on DA during the next days. English descriptions and more shoots will follow soon!

Here is a view on the Queen's Garden trail in Utah's Bryce Canyon National Park.

My previous post shows a view of the canyon from the rim, this is what you experience if you hike down into the canyon. On the left is one of Bryce's more famous Hoodoos, what they call "Thor's Hammer", which is a free standing monolith over a 150 feet tall.

I had a lot of different images from this sunrise but I decided to use the one with a fellow photographer in it to give a sense of scale. It's a great place to be when the sun is rising over the horizon, especially if you have a camera in hand.

An image created during my winter visit to Zion National Park in Utah. This photo is one of my personal favorites in large part because my goal was to come back with some new perspectives of Zion and these icy conditions provided a great opportunity.

Winter's grip was evident at many locations in the park, none as obvious as these icy sandstone cliffs.

Apikuni Falls in Glacier National Park, Montana. Of all the falls in GNP, this was my favorite.

I used a 10 stop ND filter to allow for this whispy motion blur even in the strong afternoon light. This was a 20 second exposure.

Port Willunga, South Australia

A few weeks ago, I headed down to a favourite location for a rare sunset shoot rather than dawn. At the time, there were large bushfires on Eyre Peninsula a few hundred kilometers to the west. This resulted in the strange diffused light which the sun was emitting at the time . The clouds of sunset also helped give a striking appearance to the scene. It was unfortunate that the tide was so low as I would have loved to have seen this with the water around the rocks!

Sorry about the absence here - the Loupe Awards recently had us busy in various ways along with life in general!

Petrel Cove
South Australia

It seems that whenever I make a decision to visit Petrel Cove near Victor Harbor, I'm greeted with some pretty amazing conditions. This particular morning last weekend was no exception. I thought mother nature was giving me an early christmas present but unfortunately, it cut both ways as well. After sunrise, the conditions were still amazing and I ventured to the top of the rock visible in that scene. Though I didn't fall over, a particularly vertical wave splashed water onto the 5dmk3 ( not a lot ....) and it subsequently cannot be turned out. I am hoping that some time tomorrow morning on Christmas day, it too will give me a present by allowing itself to be turned back on after drying out! Can't complain about the images to work with from the morning though and I will be super paranoid now within smelling distance of the sea.

Apologies again for the absence from dA and have yourselves all a fantastic holiday season :) Bring on 2013!!

Gunyah Dunes
Coffin Bay National Park
Eyre Peninsula
South Australia

The Gunyah dunes are accessable by 4WD a few kilometres off the road to Coffin Bay National Park. The last section toward the beach is very sandy which meant that Marianne and I chose to walk it given the SUV we were driving and my limited 4X4 skills. This sunset was a portent to stormy weather which would hit the area for the next few days giving some incredible conditions for photography but conditions difficult to tolerate especially in the dunes. Eyre peninsula is a photographer's playground and we would love to return there again one day!

After sunrise from white pocket, we decided to head to a location closer to Flagstaff for any possible sunset. With the way the clouds were looking, we figured this was the best choice. After arriving at this spectacular canyon that seemed to be seldom visited (from the point we accessed by) we headed to the rim to explore the vantage points. Within a matter of minutes the sun broke through the clouds allowing for about 20 minutes of amazing light just in the canyon. The dark skies in the distant made a nice contrast and eventually the clouds closed up for good leaving us without a sunset. This was a perfect case of being at the right place at the right time. I couldn't imagine what we would have done if we left any later. I added a handful of images from my travels last week, so take a look and let me know what you think. I'll probably post a few more from this outing.

After awaking to clear skies in the below freezing darkness of the morning, we drove to our sunrise location in hopes for something dramatic to happen. As we arrived at our spot, we noticed a large "fog" bank that appeared to be creeping closer towards us. As we waited and waited and watched the glow of pre sunrise begin to appear at the opposite horizon, we decided to step outside and give it a look to see if was worth our time. As soon as we close the doors, it began snowing briefly yet consistently. It was still about 30 minutes before sunrise and we saw the cloud begin to clear from the west and unveil the canyon. This was a gift, as the pre sunrise earth shadow gave a beautiful display over the freshly dusted canyon. However, once the sun rose, that snow cloud lit up in a beautiful display of light over the desert view watch tower and palisades of the desert (the cliffs closest to the left). It was a magical morning, and well worth trudging through the deep snow drifts in the balmy -9 and lower temps. While the foreground may lack for some, I think it perfectly portrays the feeling of being a desolate and unforgiving landscape, yet draped in beautiful white snow.

Our visit to GrundarfjŲrūur, the town closest to Pyramid Mountian, wasn't an easy one. Driving with a terrible rental 4X4 on the icy roads was hardly a treat, but to top it, we had a snow blizzard for an entire day, which wasn't at all productive.
Nevertheless, we had our shot at this thing of beauty. On one evening, the wind was slow, and the water still enough to allow this reflection. Some faint color from the sunset behind lit the clouds, and I went for it.

The dead Sea never ceases to amaze, and it enthralled us again this morning. Constant changes in water level caused the creation of countless salt spikes, and the colored sunrise clouds reflected in the small pools in the area complemented the salty scape perfectly.

When anxious, uneasy and bad thoughts come, I go to the sea, and the sea drowns them out with its great wide sounds, cleanses me with its noise, and imposes a rhythm upon everything in me that is bewildered and confused.
