I don't do many swimsuit shoots because they can be boring in comparison to my usual shoots (see my other DA submissions and you'll see why!) but when I got the chance to visit the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum [link] in October 2008, I had to squeeze a photo shoot in!

It was a beautiful paradise with a hidden beach and the temples overlooking the ocean. After our guided tour, we had an hour to explore the site on our own so while everyone else took tourist photos, I posed in my favorite bikini from Ed Hardy.

Character: Amber - "Sucker Punch"
Costume made by - Yaya Han
Photography by Kevin Knight
Model - Yaya Han

Thank you, Kevin Knight, for taking these shots at SDCC!

You can see the costume pretty well in these pics - I made it the same way they did it in the movie, which is by cutting up a Vietnam era pressure flight suit and altering it HEAVILY.
If you look at the images of the actual costume on display here: [link] On the right side of the hip there is a finished hole, through which an air hose is attached to the plane and on the inside of the flight suit there are rubber air bags sewn in that expand with air and compress the pilot's body parts so they won't pass out from all the flight maneuvers.
Brian was able to get his hands on such a flight suit for me and I spent hours seam ripping the inside air bags and the pressure tubes that followed the length of the arms, legs and back of the suit.
Then I chopped it in half and replaced the zipper, made the pants into chaps, lined them, and used the left over matching fabric to make the hat. I had to make my own pattern for the hat.
The gun/magazine holster and belt were the next to tackle, and I give many thanks to Kathy of GodSaveTheQueenFashions for helping me pick out the leathers and tools and showing me leather working techniques. I used a heavy veg tan leather hide and made my own pattern for the pieces, cut them out and punched stitching holes for hours. Then heavy duty snaps were added as well as D-rings. After making all the pieces, I hand dyed them black and shined them up. It took about a day and a half to make and assemble the whole get-up.
The gloves are neoprene and leather.
Last pieces to make were the panties, bra and choker, and thank God I found the right pleated trim. I altered a bra by adding the zipper and the trim, same with the panties. Add some fishnets and a lollipop and I was ready to kill zombie nazis!

I'll say that by the end of SDCC, I had eaten 6 lollipops and was pretty sick of them. Thinking of casting a fake lollipop, but then I'd have to put plastic in my mouth ugh.

Looking forward to more Sucker Punch timez with my ladies at Dragoncon!

First image from a modeling photoshoot for Crimson Chain Leatherworks (and makeup close up) - I did not make this outfit, but was asked to wear CCLW's hand made leather pieces and accessories. Having seen their pieces up close, I knew what great quality they were and I love this company's design aesthetics. I am also wearing a winged jetpack which was a collaboration between us (my <a href-"[link]">Steampunk wings and CCLW's leather and metal work).

Makeup-wise, I went for a harder & edgier look, using Ben Nye red pigments to create the bold extended eye shadow, and MAC and Sephora brand shadows (3 shades) to my eyes, from highlights to the blackest black color. MAC and Sephora both make great black shadows and I highly recommend them. For this look I "overdrew" the eyeliner (MAC Fluidline) to the inner corners of my eyes. It's usually something I only reserve for very staement-making makeup. I finished off the eyes with thick false lashes and bold eyebrows.
For my lips I used dark brown eyeliner pencil to contour, a dark red lipstick, a brush to blend the color to the lipliner, and gold shadow pigment for highlight. My blush is Bare Minerals.

I'm sure I'll get lots of "Oooh photoshop" comments, and I just want to say, for the record: Anyone who does professional photoshoots and makeup understands how much good lighting and good makeup can achieve. (I use a variety of products to even out my skintone, tame under eye darkness, shade bone structure etc, before I apply any color to my face.)
Photoshop can enhance the intensity of the colors, shadows and highlights and is perfectly integrated into the process of Photography. Photoshop is used in not only in fashion and people photography, but commercial products, landscape, architecture photography etc.
When it comes to people photography, there is a difference between a convention snapshot, candid portrait at a party etc. and a professionally set up fashion, glamour or cosplay photoshoot, where the objective is to create a beautiful image and strive for Perfection.
I also want to point out that digital artists use Photoshop, Illustrator and other programs to create fantastic images, why would photographers who shoot digital not be allowed to use Photoshop? Many traditional artists who paint on paper will scan in artwork and finish them in Photoshop, tweaking the lines, combine pieces from various art pieces and correcting the colors. I see Photography being no different.

So, take it or leave it, but thanks for reading.

Melbourne cosplay photographer Neil Creek is our fourth interviewee. His dA profile is ~neilcreek, and his photography was featured last February: [link]

Q: How did you get into cosplay photography?

Neil: Kind of by accident. I first attended Manifest in its second year, in 2001. I took along my brand new video camera, not knowing really what to expect but being dimly aware that there might be people dressed up. Two things were quickly obvious to me: cosplay and cosplayers were awesome, and I'd need a better camera. It wasn't till 2004 that I could shoot cosplay with my first DSLR that I became completely hooked.

Q: How have cosplay meets and conventions changed since 2001?

Neil: They have changed so much! Mostly to get much much bigger and much more involved. I commented to Hayden at MelCosPho 13 that there were more people there than at the first Manifest. Back then, there were no meets and Manifest was the only anime con in Australia. It was very much a 'club run' type event, and, though it had a great community atmosphere, it was nothing of the scale that there is today. Now we have the choice of half a dozen cons, more meetups than anyone could possibly attend and literally thousands of cosplayers. And that's just in Melbourne!

Q: What aspects of cosplay photography appeal to you compared to the other photography work you do?

Neil: Cosplayers. They are creative people with a love of their character and are happy to be the centre of attention for a while. Sometimes working with clients, the hardest thing can be to get them to relax in front of the camera. Cosplayers are already having fun, and often feeling in character. Combine that with the fact that costumes are often colourful, flashy and interesting to look at, and that they lend themselves to dramatic poses and theatrical photo shoots, and it's easy to see why photographers love shooting cosplayers!

Q: Which is your favourite cosplay photo that you've taken?

Neil: This is such a tough question. It changes all the time, and I tend to favour recent shots. I think that given how well received it was, how much it pushed my boundaries at the time, and how lots of different skills from everyone involved came together to make this shot, it's probably going to be a long-term favourite: [link]

Q: You've been a cosplay photographer in Melbourne perhaps longer than anybody. Was there any golden era, one where the opportunities for cosplay photography were the closest to perfect?

Neil: Now is our golden time! There are so many opportunities, cosplayers, themed events, huge conventions, fellow photographers and ways to share our work. A cosplay photographer today has their pick of events to attend, many cosplayers of different interests to work with, social networking services to show our work to as many people as possible, and I think possibly most importantly, the relationship between cosplayers and photographers is a mutually beneficial and respectful one. I hear stories about international communities being more competitive and even hostile. I think here and now, in Australia, is the best time and place for cosplay photography.

Q: What equipment and software do you use, and what would you most like to upgrade?

Neil: I primarily shoot with a Canon 5D Mk III, 24-70mm and 50-500mm lenses and off-camera flashes. I've got a bunch of other gear in my bag that gets used less frequently. I process all of my photos in Adobe Lightroom 4 and occasionally use Photoshop for some photo-manipulation if the photo calls for it. What I most need to upgrade right now is my desktop PC, as it's starting to struggle processing the large RAW files I shoot. I'm happy with my current camera kit.

Q: Whose work inspires you?

This is another difficult question because I draw my inspiration from everywhere. The work of the cosplayers themselves which they put into their costumes I think inspires me most. Wanting to capture their work, as well as the character they are taking on is my greatest inspiration. The community of Melbourne photographers is also a huge inspiration. They all have passion and creativity and their own unique vision. Every time they post a new shoot I'm amazed, and I love watching them grow. Beyond that, I follow a few tags on tumblr and a few users on Deviant Art, but most of my inspiration comes from much closer to home.

Q: Are you watching any airing anime right now?

Neil: The most recent title I'm still watching is Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, which I picked up after a recommendation. It started out as mostly fan-service and little plot, but the plot came into it around episodes 3 and 4. Since then, it's become really quite interesting. I think I'm enjoying it because it's mostly about the struggles of a group of young creative people to follow their dreams despite the obstacles that life puts in front of them. It's quite inspirational.

Q: Does any anime, manga, or game hold a special place in your heart?

Neil: I love so many titles, but none get me in the feels quite like Kaleido Star. Similar to Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, it's about people following their dreams against the odds, and it's incredibly uplifting and motivational. Not to mention it's gorgeous to watch and has so many beautiful costumes. I honestly have no idea why more people don't know about it and cosplay from it! A dream shoot for me would be a Kaleido Star group shoot in a circus big top. Also, Sora Naegino is my only 'anime crush', haha!

Q: Do you ever feel tempted to cosplay when you greatly enjoy an anime?

Neil: I actually love making costumes, and have worn one to Manifest once, and I've made a few others for costume parties years in the past. So I'm often tempted, but I know I don't have the time that cosplay demands, and I can't shoot and pose at the same time, so I'll always choose to shoot. If I were able to make my dream cosplay however, it would actually be the Ingram AV-98 Patrol Labor 'Alphonse' from Patlabor: [link]

Q: You're the author of several successful eBooks about photography. What photography tip have you personally found most useful?

Neil: Keep shooting. Nothing will make you a better photographer than to push yourself to always keep shooting. Even if you get in a rut, if you feel lazy, if you run out of ideas, push yourself and try to shoot at least every week. If you look at your work after shooting, see what you like and what you don't like, and try to incorporate what you have learned into your next shoot, I guarantee you will see your photography improve greatly in just a few months. And even after years, never stop. Try new ideas, seek new inspiration, push your creative barriers. It's in doing this that I'm my happiest, and I plan to be shooting for the rest of my life.

I got tagged and questions for you guys! ~

Journal Entry: Wed May 8, 2013, 8:45 AM
|This is a Link|This is a Link|<This is a Link|<This is a Link|This is a Link|

-

Since I'm such a boring pants I will not copy the rules.. I will just answer the questions and put up ten more and if you want to answer them go ahead and leave a comment! ~

The 10 Questions I got:

1. What is your favorite book out of anything you read in the past year?

Answer: That must really be the First "The Hunger Games" book, I was really into it just by the first chapter.. I'm planning to read the others when I have time for it! :3

2. What TV, book, manga, or drama couple is your favorite right now?

Answer: Since I'm watching Yu-Gi-Oh currently with my Boyfriend I must say that Puppyshipping (SetoxJono/Joey) is my favorite couple right now! But there is also Cherik (CharlesxErik) from X-Men that I will probably never stop liking and obsessing about! :XD:

3. Do you have a favorite Kpop or Jpop band? Artist?

Answer: Unfortunatly I don't listen to K-pop.. J-pop or any pop with a letter before it.. I have never found it intresting to listen to music which I don't understand the lyrics.
(Gagnam style and anime intros/outros are exceptions in this fact :XD:)

4. What is your favorite summer drink?

Answer: A glas filled with ice cold, ice tea with peach flavor! ~

5. What do you plan to do this summer?

Answer: Spend a lot of time with my friends and my boyfriend. Going on conventions and just have a blast! :la:

6. Have you ever been to a convention?

Answer: The last time I counted, I believe I have been to twelve conventions starting FurryCon in 2009! ;ww;

7. What Angel/Buffy couple do you root for? If you watch the shows...

Answer: That was like my favorite show when I was younger!!
Well.. I'm not much for Buffy in person because in the later seasons she is the biggest whiner there is! But If I have to pick I think she was best off with Riley.. He was really good for her!
I really love Spike so I don't think they should be together.. He deserves better!
(I could keep this question going for a whole journal but yeah! :XD:)

8. What job do you hope to have someday? Unless you already have the dream job...

Answer: Well.. I don't have any working ambitions, yet. (I'm twenty so that is bad)
So I'm just hoping to work with something I truly like. (Kids for example)

9. What color hair do you really want?

Answer: I really don't have a dream color! But I like having blonde hair! :la:

10. What is your favorite time of day to see a movie, or night?

Answer: I like watching it later, it is easier to get in the mood when it is a bit darker outside! :3

My questions for you!

1. What is your favorite colour?
2. Where were you born?
3. Cats or dogs?
4. Dark chocolate, white chocolate or milk chocolate?
5. Favorite movie or tv series?
6. Favorite Holiday?
7. Do you have any phobias?
8. Do you want any kids?
9. what is your favorite videogame?
10. Do you want to have the "perfect dream" wedding?

Hope you will answer because I'm very curious! :la:

Have a great week!

Hello there my wonderfully sexy beasts~

So I casually went onto dA now, and I was just looking at my page and stuff, and then I saw 9,002 pageviews--- AND THEN I WAS LIKE WOAH 9,002 PAGEVIEWS WHUT IM DIE.

Ohmylord.... like WOW. Tbh, I started on dA not really thinking I could ever get such a high number of pageviews OR watchers OR anything! I MEAN 900,2 PGVS AND 199 WATCHERS THIS IS MADNESS. Thankyou all so much for all the support, and I know I've been pretty inactive for the past couple of months with school and stuff, but that's (hopefully) about to change! This piece I am very proud of. I have been procrastinating on it for months now. Before all there was, was just the geisha standing there. I knew that I wanted a wooden woven window frame. But man, once I started drawing the weaves in there it was like a switch turned on and suddenly I knew everything that I wanted to put in there.

I thought it to be an appropriate theme for Fall since the season is only a couple months away. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Aareon: Yeeeaaah, I like to stretch my imagination every so often far beyond the realm of norm, or even un-normal for that matter. But what else would you expect from a dream child?

This is both my "What its like" along with "How we cop".

My sickness just keeping getting worse and worse. Stuck in a wheel chair for my safety, plunged with hundreds of meds to hopefully keep the seizures under control, but they keep getting worse.

I feel like my body is dematerializing, blowing, washing away into the universal mixture that is earth. That feeling gets stronger, I'm not longer here, even the people that walk around me don't see me. I'm invisible. My friends don't see me, my family doesn't see me. I'm here, sitting in my chair, by my compter. I look up as my children play and walk by, and give them the strongest smile that I have to give, but it was as if I was smiling into nothing, even though my eyes are clearly asking for attention. It'd had gotten so bad that I no longer wanted to be here, what was the point? If I were gone, no one would miss me. Would they even look at the empty chair and remember who sat there? Who woke up, fighting pain and illness day after day, just so they can have me... Was it all a waste? I'm disappearing more. My eye's are hallow and I begin to believe these things that I am thinking. I'm so alone. I don't want to be alone, I don't want to be in pain, slowly dying being useless here.

I got so discouraged one evening and put up a message that was startling to my friend and she immediately called the police in fear for my safety. Feelings emotions flared up immediately. First panic because I have a people phobia, and as the police came in, I feared for my children in the other room sleeping, they ask about them and I reply. I had done nothing wrong at this point. Nothing to endanger myself or my children. It woke me up from my sleeping abyssal, ajared me, who I was. What I was living for. And it was for my children. To be their mother, no matter how sick I become. They understand this. I remember all those times they gave me hugs and kisses, knowing they have their own agenda.

Since that day everytime I start to feel that way, washed up, pushed away. I remember, speak out, draw their eyes to me so that they can see me smiling at them, showing them I love them even though I am so sick. When that feeling comes I make it from something bad, to something good. I fade out, but NOT away. I got to my place where there are colors and lights, fireflies. To my fantasy realm, draw, play games. Take a break from reality just for a little bit at a time and usually not when the kids are around, and if they are, they enjoy my fantasy. Hopie, my daughter even enjoys my fantasies. We even draw together and make fun creatures, and my heart swells. It swells in a way that a happy family should. And in a way that even though i am sick and getting worse, I should strive to give them all I can while I am still here.
