Part One: Gift
Autumn leaves pitched about in the wind like falling rain soaked with dyes of copper and crimson. The shriveled foliage settled on the last remaining shoots of grass quietly, a seasonal carpet to mark the passing of time. Feet pounded the black asphalt pathways as joggers fought to get in a last minute run before the snowfall. The metal playgrounds swarmed with children, venting out their energy before the long hibernation state winter brought.
Across the sidewalk from the playground, a solitary wooden bench sat in the chill, its only occupant staring off into the sky. The boy, who looked no older than eighteen, tugged at the sleeves of his knee-length overcoat and shivered, shifting his eyes from the clouds to the ground beside his feet. A colorful yellow ball sat in the woodchips inches from his boot, shifting from side to side as if it had just recently rolled there.
With a sigh that made the dark-haired teen seem much older then he looked, he bent over double a

Part Two: Detention
I think I might love him.
Aiden stared down at his hands, clenching his pale fingers into a loose fist as the words spilled from his tongue. He could feel Vivaldis eyes on him, unblinking in the darkness of the large study. A cold sweat broke out across Aidens neck as a sober silence settled between them, interrupted only by the faint ticking of the wall clock in the distant hall.
Aiden, Vivaldi sighed, his voice crumpled and fading like thin cloth, youve never even met him. To say that you love this boy is to say that he is your other half. Even a young one such as yourself knows how serious such accusations can be. Aiden looked up, swallowing hard as he stared into Vivaldis blind eyes, washed free of all color besides a light gray.
I know, Aiden whispered, ducking his head once more.
but I love him.

Saint watched the slashes of light dance over the ceiling, twisting and curling like the tides of the ocean thousands of miles away. The curtains blocked out most of the daylight but even the heavy black drapes in Aidens room couldnt hold onto blackness completely. The manor was completely silent. Echoes of the last midnight conversations absorbing into the walls where they would remain forever. It all seemed so peaceful
Aiden shifted next to him, his face lost in the contours of sleep, lips parted limply, pale skin practically glowing in the dark. His slender hand traveled blindly across the sheet, searching for solace in the wide bed. Saint scooted closer to him, taking the older boys hand and pressing it lightly to his cheek, watching curiously as Aidens eyes parted slowly. He blinked, eyes widening more as he drifted away from sleep, his fingers curling against Saints cheek.
Good morning, Saint whispered,

Part Thirteen: Family
Ill be leaving the house tonight.
Saint glanced up from the long green leaf cupped in his hands, staring across the thick foliage of the greenhouse to where Aiden sat on the other side of the row. The older boy observed Saint cautiously, choosing his next words with care. It will only be for a few hours you probably wont even notice Im gone. I just thought I should tell you in case you woke in the night and I wasnt back yet.
Saint let the leaf fall, stretching his legs out across the greenhouse floor as he tilted his head, Why are you leaving? At first the older boy didnt answer, but kept his hands working in the loose soil of a small bonsai tree suffering from lack of nutrients. Saint waited patiently, an idea already forming in his mind though he was too afraid to say it aloud. Finally, Aiden spoke
I need to eat.

Part Nine: First Bite
Mrs. Owens frowned as she handed out the corrected test papers, her face telling how disappointed she was in the classs grades. She paused at Saints desk, her age-spotted hand shaking slightly as she set the paper down on his desk. For a moment it looked like she was going to say something, but changed her mind at the last moment and continued on down the row. Saint glanced at the page, his heart sinking as he observed the failing grade posted in red ink on top.
No wonder Mrs. Owens wasnt happy
Saint looked up at the clock just in time as the minute hand swirled by the twelve and the school bell screamed shrilly in the distance. All disappointment about the test forgotten, Saint shoved the paper in his bag and quickly fled the classroom before Mrs. Owens could call him to her desk again. A light smile played on his lips as he purposefully walked away from the waiting buses, turning instead in the direction of Vivaldi Manor several blocks aw

Part Eleven: Midnight
The manor seemed empty, as usual. Long shadows cast over the walls from the setting sun, streaking the furniture and carpets with slashes of red and gold. Saint hugged his arms across his chest tightly, a chill running up his back when the sunlight was immediately wiped away as Vivaldi shut the double-oak door behind them. The old vampire shrugged off his long coat and draped it over the swirling back of an armchair, his expression controlled and careful.
Saint, Vivaldi said slowly, his hand reaching up to stroke the buttons of his loose silk shirt, I would ask that when you spend time within the walls of this house you take caution. His eyes flashed in the dark as he turned to look at the young boy standing in the foyer, Not even I can protect you from my own coven all the time. They are a free people and do as they wish.
Vivaldi paused for a moment, letting the words sink in before resting his hand on Saints shoulde

Part Three: Bond
The older boy sucked in a drag of his cigarette and punched at the buttons on the remote, What? Saint drew his knees up to his chest, his eyes fixed on the far wall of the small basement as the changing channels of the television threw colored lights into the dark. Saint had skipped his detention and half of his last hour just so he could come visit Christopher early to make up for the time lost yesterday. Even though hed apologized and explained that it wasnt his fault Christopher still seemed a bit angry with him.
Hey, Christopher poked the tip of his cigarette through the hole in Saints jeans, singing the skin and making the younger boy jump, You were asking me something, right? Dont just sit there like a moron, finish the question! Saint rubbed at the burnt skin, fighting back the sting of tears, I was just wondering Christopher, do you love me?
The older boy

Part Twelve: All My Time
Saint wrung shower water from his hair as he wiped away the fine layer of mist that coated the bathroom mirror. The few bruises on his face had already started to fade, leaving the skin a worn white color even paler than the rest of his complexion. Thoughtfully, Saint ran his fingers over the healing cut on his lip, thinking back to that night three days ago when it had been decided he would stay at the Vivaldi manor with Aiden. At first the idea had scared him hed never even mentioned Aiden to his mother and now here he was, three weeks after the first time they met, and he was living with him.
The mirror was starting to fog up again, blurring Saints view of his face and chest darkened with contusions. He let it happen, watching silently as the mist covered every inch of the mirror, leaving him a faint smudge at the center of it all. With a soft sigh, Saint turned away, grabbing the pair of faded jeans Aiden had loaned him from the side of the

Part Four: In the Rain
The sky was dark gray, cold and unforgiving throughout the day as the clouds began to boil to a firm black. By the end of school the sky had successfully split, pouring sheets as giggling students rushed to the buses with their coats hung over their heads. Saint watched through Mrs. Owenss window, reminding himself with a slight frown that hed have to walk home after serving his hours in detention.
He tapped the tip of his pencil against the worksheet he was supposed to be doing, his eyes growing heavy as the heat of a summer storm rolled in. Christopher just had to leave during the rainiest month of the year
Mrs. Owens glanced up from her papers, her eyes darting to the clock as she nodded curtly in gesture that detention was over. Saint stood quickly, dumping his books into his worn backpack and smiling at the teacher behind the desk before starting down the hall at a quick pace. Hed been coming home rather late the passed week and his m

Part Six: I thought thee fair...
The older boy grunted as Saint ran the last few feet between them and wrapped his arms around his stomach, pushing him forward into the door of his car. Shit! Christopher exclaimed, the box in his arms crashing to the ground from their collision, Dammit, Saint! Watch where the hell youre going. Saint took several steps back, folding his arms behind his back and smiling meekly, Sorry. I didnt mean to bump you so hard.
Christopher ran a hand through his lanky copper-colored hair, a scowl on his face as he picked up the box and turned to the younger boy. I got home early this morning. I dropped by your house to pick you up but you werent there he cocked an eyebrow, what the hell happened to your eye?
Saint rocked back on his heels, deliberately avoiding the second question, Sorry I wasnt there I spent the night at a friends.
