Riverscape near Salzburg, Austria. The scenery is very hard to expose correctly due to the high contrast differences. Maybe it´s useful for somebody though.

Special Note: These brushes are in black and white, not colored as in the preview. The original brushes and image packs prepared by redheadstock are not in color either. So, you'll have to add the shade of color yourself, by selecting the desired foreground color before applying them.

Special thanks to Stephanie (aka redheadstock [link]) for allowing me to convert and host this set of brushes she created! Please stop by her site and tell her thanks! EXERCISE:  Analyzing how to look at different materials and textures and how to accurately capture shading and rendering them.

  • Two (2) Week Exercise!

While this exercise may sound sweet and simple, it’s actually quite the underlying challenge. We are looking at how to re-create 6 different types of candies and look at look at them analytically. So what distinguishes a jelly bear gummie from a candy cane? Just from looking at them both you can tell, They treat lighting differently and the surface material is vastly different. It is our job as digital artists to be able to analyze a material and be able to know how to capture and re-create the same look and feel on a canvas. So don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the allure of candy, for this exercise is bittersweet!

What are the 6 confectionery treats we will be taking a closer look at? Go through each below with some tips

  • Jelly (Gummy) Bear – The light will be split, half being reflected and the other being absorbed. The light that passes through the surface will create a subsurface scattering effect making it appear as if the material has a soft glow of color.
  • Jelly Bean – This hard surface candy will still absorb some of that light must will mostly be reflected. If a gummy bear was 50/50 on light being reflected/absorbed, this would be around 75/25.
  • Peppermint – Recreating this surface will require an attentive focus to highlights and where you are placing them. Stay concentrated and intense will your highlights.
  • Sucker – This is similar to the gummy bear is that light will pass through and you can see the contents within (the stick of the sucker is still visible), but also carries the surface of a hard candy and will give more concentrated highlights similar to the peppermint.
  • Sugar Coated – This is all about the outer coating of texture. Take the initial direction of a gummy and then coat it with a speckle brush.
  • Licorice – This is similar to the peppermint but not as intense and the focus here will be on the ridges to accurately capture how light affects the surfaces.

GOAL: To strengthen your analyzing skills to interpret different materials and textures.

This is sweet way to strengthen your artist eye and be able to capture different lighting information on different subject matters. Take what you learn from this and apply it to any texture and material!

Download your handout and submit it by next Friday to be one of the top submissions entered for this exercise!

The exercise results are up! This was a more difficult one but the more you understand light and it's affect on color, the better digital artist you will become! Check out the results posting here: cgcookie.com/concept/2014/01/2…

The Full Sliced Fruit Exercise Results HERE.

Artist: Tim Von Rueden (vonn)

This was certainly a juicy exercise filled with a lot of finer detailing and a closer look at how isolated highlights can really add an effect to the final product.

I used the skin and pore brush from the CG Cookie Brushes to produce the sliced fruit results. For the step by step after I create an outline of each fruit, and begin to lay down a foundation of solid colors. This helps create a value to work on top of and gives a color grounding.

  1. Outline – Begin with the overall look and shape to each sliced fruit, remembering to take your time defining the important shapes such as seeds or a separation in pulp.
  2. Solid Base - Choose a solid base color from a reference and work more neutral or even closer to a darker value to build upon.
  3. Secondary Base Colors - I wanted to showcase a secondary base color to work from since there is such a distinction in color for this subject matter.
  4. Build up Forms and Values - With a lighting direction in place, start to build up the values and this is what will begin the transition from not looking so flat but rather having some depth.
  5. Remove Outline and Refine – Once you have gotten enough form to work with, you can remove the outline layer and begin to define the detail work and clean up the areas that were previously covered from the lineart.
  6. Polish with Strong Highlights - This is the most important stage. This is when the fruit adds a sense of realism and more importantly a sense of it looking “juicy” Keep the highlights consistent with the light direction and have fun watching your fruits come alive!

Important Notes:

I have no archery training; `jademacalla was kind enough to allow me to use his bow and give me some basic tips. Thus, these are probably not accurate references for a skilled archer. These photos were taken with a non-realistic approach to archery in mind; they are more geared to the magical and the fantasy. Please consider this when using them for reference.

Please refrain from making comments about the model's ability. I am already aware of the shortcomings of the technical aspects.

Funded through Kickstarter.

Big thanks to `jademacalla for the photography on these.

The Su-34 is a strike aircraft based on the Su-27 frame, codenamed "Fullback". With a tandem seat cockpit, the Su-34 exhibits great maneuverability with refined aerodynamics. This makes it highly similar to the Su-30 series, but the Fullback offers thicker armor and increased precision strike capability. Also notable is a toilet and galley, located behind the crew seats. This is certainly useful for attack missions over an extended period of time.

The Fullback had a protracted development phase, affected by the fall of the Soviet Union and Russia's post-Cold War status. The first examples were built in the early 1990's, with development sporadically made throughout the decade. It was only in 2004 when the initial batch of Su-34's were completed - earmarked to replace aging Su-24 Fencers. Russia plans to acquire some 70 airframes by 2015.
