SWITZERLAND, Bernina

After numerous arduous hikes during the last 4 weeks I'm proud to present a lot of new work. I traveled through the Eastern Alps: from Switzerland to South Tyrol and the Dolomites to Slovenia. I'll upload them here on DA during the next days. The first part of the series shows the Swiss canton Graubünden where I shot Bergell, Val Roseg and Val Bernina. English descriptions and more shoots will follow soon!

A near full moon rises above the towering peaks of the snow-capped Wasatch Mountains of Northern Utah. This was a case of being in the right place at the right time. A long hike on the trail of wildlife led me to this overlook just in time for this amazing scene.

I quickly changed my set-up and switched into "landscape mode" when the light started to look promising. I hope you enjoy!

Frary Peak after a light dusting of snow.

A chase trying to photograph Mule Deer led me to this spot, I took some images looking to the East and captured great light there, turned around and saw the peak shrouded by the glow of clouds at dusk. I grabbed my gear and ran about 1/4 mile to this overlook before the light faded. This was a great evening spent hiking, exploring new locations, and taking pictures, one of those nights that everything falls into place and you realize you'll probably never stop chasing moments like these.

Utah.

Autumn Magic II

Warm morning light enchants this autumn beech forest into a dreamy, surreal atmosphere. I just love it when these characteristic boles are wrapped in such a soft light.

Golden October

Through my own project "Tribute to My Home" I travel so much through our rural area,
especially the southern part of the Naturepark Augsburg Western Forests and the Lech / Wertachtal
in Greater Schwabmünchen.
Yesterday I re-visited my favorite place in autumn. The painted autumn forest around the fish pond
at Eggerhof shines in the last available sunlight and let memories of the giant coloring of
North Americas "Indian Summer" come up.
And somehow it makes me a little bit proud, not far from my home, having
found a small Swabian "Indian Summer" ...

Milk Pool

This is a relatively hidden river with some very nice waterfalls. Due to special minerals the water is turquoise milky. It was slightly rainy and I had to balance on the very slippery rocks with my extended tripod and an umbrella. The river was more like a white water and I was very worried why i haven't finished a camera insurance. But in the end everything went like clockwork and I could give up my worries for the next dangerous situation.

Yes, it is often a mixed feeling when shooting outdoors in the wilderness. On the one hand, you will feel overwhelmed by the beauty of the surrounding nature. On the other hand, the nature can strike without warning. Those who respect both sides, is also usually respected by nature.

A hunt for a photograph that I found in Denver International Airport by Thomas Mangelsen led me to this spot. Located at the very end of a gravel road, I spent the night in my hot rod anticipating something like this. My mom told me the day before to not worry about how all of my photographs turned out. It only takes one.

As the weekend rolled around and the temps having recently dropped, I thought it would be a good time to head up to Dream Lake before everything froze over. I called up a friend from college that now lives nearby to see if he wanted to come along and shoot. With a confirmation and all systems go, we set out well before sunrise to RMNP. The wind was a bit gusty, nothing too bad, but when we rounded the final bend to the Lake, that's when we realized what we were getting ourselves into.

With gusts reaching 60+ mph, it was hard to keep the camera steady. A remedy for this was to up the ISO and knock the f-stop down a little. Also, remaining low to the ground and keeping the tripod legs spread to the max helped a lot.

Though the mood was crazy, there really wasn't any good lighting, until there was. And out of all my trips up there, all the hikes, and all the early morning drives to capture an epic scene , it finally came together. Beautiful rays of sun came from the East, seeping through the clouds which gave a vibrant overload of oranges. From the frozen fingers, to the red cheeks, and the last bit of flowing stream, it was all just wicked awesome. And it was really nice to share it with another photographer that enjoyed it as much as I did!

For many years I've stared at this location, but only behind glass and inside a frame. Always crossing my fingers I would have my chance at that special opportunity to experience this amazing place for myself.

Then finally, that opportunity arose. I made my plans, located the area and took a hike, twice actually. The first evening, I shot from 5 pm to 1 am, soaking up every bit of detail I could cram into my little brain. So as to never forget such a unique and historic place.

There was only one issue, the evening wasn't what I had pictured in my head for my shot. So, the following evening I returned to not only be greeted by an extremely hospitable German native named Peter Sierla, that by the way allowed me to shoot this with his 24mm f/3.5 TS-E, but the sunset I had been waiting for.

The temperature, the lighting, the location, the company, everything was just........perfect.

I'll never forget this evening.

Shot taken on March 14th 2012 from the summit of Mont Brévent (2.525 m), France. During one evening-night-morning spent up there freezing my tail off, and, also, contemplating the immense beauty of the Mont Blanc massif north face! :-)

A bit on the right of the summit you can see the brilliant star Sirius.

I've decided to capture the huge area of the Mont Blanc summit (4.810 m) during the late evening transition time right after the blue hour, when the camera through long exposure is still able to perceive some sort of "atmospheric light", when the light pollution from Chamonix is still non too invading, and before moonrise that would have spoiled the sight of the first stars in the sky.
So: insanely great subject, right place and absolutely precise time window.

Unfortunately at this resolution it's not possible to see the Refuge Vallot, located at 4.362 meters above sea level. It's placed on the iced crest on the right... in the original hi-res file is perfectly visible the entire metal structure!

Here you can see a sector of the Milky Way passing above the French side of the Mont Blanc massif.
Night shot, taken on September 13th 2012, from the shores of the beautiful alpine Lake Cheserys (2.211 m), high up in the Aiguilles Rouges above the Chamonix valley (France).

To whom it may concern, I'll be posting soon another image with a perfect mirror reflection of the Mont Blanc massif in the still water of the lake.
Anyhow, I hope you'll take a few moments to see the light conditions of this shot. Please note the amount of light that a good camera can record during an ordinary long exposure, around thirty seconds at high ISO...
It manages to capture not only the light of the distant Chamonix, but, somehow, it seems the universe itself is producing light... filling with a bright veil of hope the dark rippled waters of the lake.
I've found as very evocative this subtle dialogue between light and darkness. Obviously light just barely perceptible to the naked eye!

This picture has recently been published, along with other photos of mine, in the British newspaper Daily Mail.

Here you can see part of the marvelous Aiguilles de Chamonix (Mont Blanc massif), in the exact moment when a turbulence began to set free a few summits, revealing a magic world completely encrusted in ice.
A view that does not happen every day, even in winter, because of the very vertical walls.

This is the light just before sunset. I would say the best one for this kind of subject, since a warmer light would have somehow interfered with the glacial atmosphere.

From left to right: Aiguille de Blaitière (3.522 m), Dent du Caiman (3.554 m), Dent du Crocodile (3.640 m), Aiguille du Plan (3.673 m).

Peyto Lake
Banff National Park

A few days ago I walked up the closed snow filled road up to the Peyto Lake viewpoint. There was some fresh snow over night that gave a nice white blanket over the trees and the edge of the lake.

Lights from the nearby highway casts a sweet glow onto Cascade Mountain just outside Banff, AB. The stars were out in full force last night. You could barely see a dark starless patch of sky.

Another unimaginable stroke of luck in an already lucky evening.
It was only after I looked at this image back home, that I realized that the curve of the water's edge fit the contour of the glacier perfectly.

A Panorama taken at the climax of the pink Alpine glow we were so lucky to have. The combination of the low angle of the sun and the snowy coating (the volcano itself is, of course, black) is another proof that winter is the best time of the year to shoot in Iceland.
Öræfajökull is the highest mountain and volcano in Iceland. One of the most feared as well, as it has violently erupted twice in historical times. Prior to the first eruption the area around it was challed Hérağ (shire), being green and lush. After the eruption, the area was flooded and covered in ash and volcanic debris. For decades after the eruption the area was uninhabited and since been called Öræfi - badlands.

If you'd like to experience and shoot this magical location, among many other incredible icy sceneries, you're welcome to join my upcoming 'Land of Ice' Iceland winter workshop taking place January 2013. The workshop is co-guided by renowned local Icelandic mountaineer and pro photographer Skarphedinn Thrainsson, and it will bring you to the most amazing locations for landscape photography in south Iceland.

Our visit to Grundarfjörğur, the town closest to Pyramid Mountian, wasn't an easy one. Driving with a terrible rental 4X4 on the icy roads was hardly a treat, but to top it, we had a snow blizzard for an entire day, which wasn't at all productive.
Nevertheless, we had our shot at this thing of beauty. On one evening, the wind was slow, and the water still enough to allow this reflection. Some faint color from the sunset behind lit the clouds, and I went for it.
