Working @ UbisoftNot even kidding, though my contract is only for two months so far. I was offered a unique opportunity to work alongside experts in the industry, and was recruited for concept art, illustration, and storyboarding, bouncing around to see where I might fit with my toony style. It's only been day one so far, but I'm working right alongside professionals and get to learn from them first-hand. Pretty sure I'm still reeling. Obviously I can't tell you what we're working on due to confidentiality agreements, but it's pretty cool to see all the behind-the-scenes action my own self.Working @ Ubisoft in Personal More Like This
Unfortunately, this does mean a significant stall in my (slow) progress on HAT, my animation-to-be. While working at LASALLE I literally spent every minute animating if I wasn't busy assisting teachers; now the only time I'll have to work on it will be when I get home, and on the weekends. Finishing the illustrations for Voltaire's upcoming children's book

Last Sunday I had a Skype meeting with Brendan Julian and Richard Johnston - the voices of Louis and James respectively from my upcoming animation - to discuss the finer points of Honour Amongst Thieves. As promised, I managed to record it and so without further ado, I present to you:
Honour Amongst Thieves
I was delighted to see the two of them got along so well, because their character interaction promises to be great this way. Unfortunately, Santiago's VA was unable to make it due to timezones, but perhaps sometime in future we'll be able to repeat this again plus one Spaniard!

It's about that time for a new journal entry, as a lot has happened since last I was seen lurking about this site. I have new Honour Amongst Thieves Questions and Answers podcasts, Amnesia videos, and photos, as well as news on my current job(s), and the results of :iconredeaddie:'s fantastic Louis cosplay. So how about I just start from the beginning?
Brendan Julian was over in Singapore for three weeks towards the end of my summer break, which was responsible for most of my absence. For those who don't yet know, he is the voice for Louis Despatis in my (as of yet) unfinished animation. Much fun was had. As well as dragging him all over the island and introducing him to all manner of wild and weird Asian cuisine, we also spent a lot of time at Universal Studios, Singapore, with my LASALLE besties for Livia's birthday. Brendan got to hug Reese's Pieces
Shisha Pipes at Three A.M. ...There's nothing quite like sitting back on pillows in a dim room with painted murals and UV lights discussing the problems of the world and how we can change the future for the better through the aromatic smoke of several shisha pipes with complete strangers. I feel like I can change the world. Maybe not in big ways, but in small, baby steps. I want to finish this animation, I want to get my message out. I want to make a graphic novel that underlines current issues through the eyes of my characters; I want to make a difference. I feel justified in knowing I'm not the only one who thinks like this.
I want to change the world.
... Damn, this sounded so much better in my head at 3a.m. in the cafe toilets when I thought of it.

For those asking, I'm animating directly into the computer using a Wacom tablet. The animation program I'm using is TVPaint Animation 10 Pro. Super expensive so I use the school computers, but it's like the illegitimate love-child between Photoshop and Adobe After Effects without Flash's niggling tendencies to crash every ten minutes. That program is sex. <3

Want to Work in the Industry?:iconbobbie-the-jean: made a very good journal entry where she briefly discusses what to expect in the film industry, and I thoroughly recommend reading it to familiarize yourself with what it's like:Want to Work in the Industry? in Personal More Like This
I also recommend following her link to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lcB9u-9mVE&feature=youtu.be which really drives home some of the issues with the demographic for artists/VFX in the world right now. As an animation graduate we are made aware of these discrepancies while still at college, and the hefty workloads and looming deadlines with zero compensation and lack of sleep could be considered a precursor to what we could expect in future.
A lot of people still seem to have rose-coloured glasses over their eyes in regards to what it must be like to be a "good artist" hired in the industry; this is the reality of it. You have to take the good with the bad, there are no guarantees, and you really, really have to love what you're doing.
Animation SituationI've been rushing at breakneck speeds to finish my animation in time for the official submission deadline tomorrow ... or, today, by now actually. However, there are still little fixes I want to make to Santiago's introduction scenes, as well as some revisions to the "finished" sequences with Louis and James, so I'm holding back on uploading the clips to Youtube.Animation Situation in Personal More Like This
Until then, have some progress shots!
Warm Bodies ...Warm Bodies ... in Personal More Like This
Watch it. Seriously.
I just got back from the cinemas, where I caught Warm Bodies with my bestie from LASALLE. I know what you're thinking, that the movie didn't look that great. Yet another zombie movie amongst the throngs of supernatural the media flings at us, yet another teenage romance to appeal to every young adult with a pulse. And I will be the first to admit that when I first heard the outline of the story - a cute young man who just happens to be undead falls in love with a young girl at first sight - I was skeptical. I assumed it would become a rehash of Twilight, and I just got over the nausea of seeing those posters cluttering all the billboards.
However, after trawling through the trailers and finding them appealing and funny, I decided that the movie was worth a shot. It advertises itself as a quirky, humorous take on zombies, throwing in a mix of teenage romance
If you are considering going into the industry....If you are an artist or want to be one, especially if you want to get into the VFX industry, you should watch this:If you are considering going into the industry.... in Personal More Like This
It touches on a few things I feel are important to understand as an artist and even as consumers of art:
1.) Art is not an exact science. It can be difficult to put a price tag on it, let alone the often very complicated processes of making it.
2.) Computers are tools that facilitate our work but they DO NOT do the work for us.
3.) Don't get into this industry for the money. If you go into this line of work, you do it because you love it. If someone happens to get lucky or has a really great idea and he/she hits it big, GREAT! Good for him/her. But don't go in expecting that to happen to you. Chances are it won't. If you are lucky, you will find a nice middleclass job you can support yourself and your family on for a while...... until....
4.) Unfortunately, a lot of employers see artists as disposable. When they no longer need you, they will kick you to the curb an
My Thoughts on Healthcare in America. One of the great, hidden atrocities I feel gets lost in all this healthcare hubbub is how ultimately disgusting it is that we allow corporations to profiteer off of people's health. Healthcare CEOs should not become multimillionaires by denying people coverage or lifesaving medical procedures. Healthcare CEOs should not build their mansions on jacked up rates that effectively force hardworking middleclass families into poverty or into suffering through horrible illnesses they can't afford treatment for. No working taxpayer or disabled vet or child in this country should ever have to face down the choice between dying or going broke and then dying anyway when they get rescinded because they forgot to dot an i or cross a t somewhere. There is something horribly wrong in this country when CEOs look at sick people and see dollar signs instead of fellow human beings in need to whom they owe a debt as part of the social contract we all agree to in American society. My Thoughts on Healthcare in America. in Personal More Like This

On the subject of Copyrights and ContentsI'd like to take this moment to address a very important issue within the art community, and this is Copy Rights. On the subject of Copyrights and Contents in Personal More Like This
Recently I had had a situation with a client that reminded me that both parties- the client AND the artist- have specific rights that need to be addressed at the time of creating a design and/or illustration. Both parties need to have a CLEAR understanding of their rights, and ask any and as many questions until they feel as if they have the right information. Assumption and dishonesty are not good business foundations, let alone become legal liability in the long run. Lying on any side is the most common action that leads to bigger situations that at time, will be dealt with legally.
From here on in, the "Client" is the commissioner, and the "Artist" is the person in charge of design, illustration, and/or color.
1) The difference between "content" and "product/property".
When someone commissions you for a design, you have many different types of ownership. The most common

Before I get to my update on how surgery went, I got to make an enormously futile attempt to thank you all for your incredible collective wave of stories, thoughts, and well-wishes on my previous post. I have so many people saying they believe in me I am now a minor deity. I shouldn't be surprised statistically, but I am aghast regardless at how many of you have immediate family and friends who've had cancer or indeed have had it yourselves. As I say, I've gotten off easy here, and my heart goes out to everybody that's had to grapple with far more serious cases, and especially to those who've lost dear ones. YOU are the brave sons n' daughters of beeches, you guys all blow my mind wide open. Work's been super fast-paced, intriguing, challenging. I don't believe the range of things I've worked on in the past two-point-five months. Traditional animation, Flash animation (oh god so much Flash animation), concept art (the funnest stuff of all, why am I even getting paid for this?), proposals, games, toys, icons, exactly one squillion in-game items, websites, user interfaces, and on and on. SO COOL. We seem to be short-staffed, or just generally over-burdened (the guys have told me this is pretty much the busiest they've seen the place), so I've been racing through the daily minefield of surprise deadlines to keep abreast of the big thundering monster ones. But it's the speed and the unknown schedule that makes every day interesting. And a complete blur afterwards. I am so l

Most of all, it's hugely inspirational to see creative people of every single cut out there having such a damn good time together, every one of them an important and unique part of the whole. Notes on Cornelius as a ShapeshifterA reminder. Cornelius was originally human. He ran afoul of a form-destroying virus which malfunctioned, mutating his body into a genetic hodgepodge of all former hosts of the virus, including himself. Although he's now apparently a monster thing, the virus left his original code intact. Each of his cells contain double DNA strands, one human and one glatni. He's able to express either set at will. But there are lots of catches.Notes on Cornelius as a Shapeshifter in Profiles More Like This
Just keep in mind that 'unshifted', 'normal', 'actual' Cornelius is glatni, 'shapeshifted' Cornelius is human.
By definition, anything 'magical' that happens in the Network works in conjunction with the nearby dimension, which has different physics. In Cornelius' case, this foots the bill for his change in mass. When he transforms, his shifting field (an area around him pushed drastically nearer the other dimension, temporarily allowing crazy things like all your cells changing at once without killing you) yanks/pushes a whole load of extra matter into/out o

I've had this character for over a year and he's gotten loads of art. that tag isn't even all of it. very few things in that tag, i'm personally responsible for the creation of. only two of them are commissions. some are requests.
i specifically remember talking to someone who would get jealous of the amount of art i got. she had had her account for about the same time i did, had about the same number of followers, and interacted with the same amount of people (and even the same exact people that i did). some people are gonna know exactly who i'm talking about but that's not important. what is important is: what did i do that she didn't? how do you get art?
