Spirit Day 2012"Ultimately, I want Spirit Day to make just one person feel little bit better about his or herself, to feel safe enough in their own skin and to be proud of who they are" - Brittany McMillanSpirit Day 2012 in Community Relations More Like This
In memory of the young LGBT people who lost their lives to suicide, Brittany encouraged her friends to wear purple on a day in October -- a day that came to be known as Spirit Day. Since then, GLAAD has helped turn Spirit Day into a global event that inspires millions of individuals, celebrities, TV personalities, media outlets, companies and schools to wear purple in a stand against bullying.
While Spirit Day does focus on the LGBT community, I believe that it's anti-bullying message is relevant to every community. It only get's better, if we take the pledge to make it so.
Practice compassion and understanding, and treat others how you would like to be treated and we can make a difference.

1. Happy Holidays and Merry New Year
As the old year begins to fade into the sunset, it is customary to reflect on the passing year and make plans for the upcoming one. Some do this in the form of resolutions, some people make action plans, some people just swing into the new year the same way they swung out of the old oneWhatever way you intend to welcome in 2013, I hope you're surrounded by love and that you do it safely!
I've been reflecting on the year and like many, with some focus on the unimaginable events of the last few weeks. Specifically, the shooting in Newtown. I know that it's "human nature" to want to find

1. Miscellaneous vs Other
Over the past few months, we've been diligently working on cleaning up the category tree of old and unused categories. While most of this will go unnoticed by the community, what you will notice is the change from "Miscellaneous" galleries to "Other". The reason for this change is simple. The concept of Miscellaneous leads one to believe that it's a junk drawer category for everything under the sun when the intention was to be an "Other" category for deviations that don't fit well in other sub-categories of the tree. We're also working on u

In my opinion, one of the greatest advantages to the New Submission Process, are the thumbnail examples and descriptions that appear when you're selecting a category. It's no secret that we have misplaced deviations throughout the galleries and it's probably the most complained about topic I deal with on a daily basis. My team and I have been working hard to improve the descriptions and thumbnail examples for all of the galleries, and I'm happy

I'd like to take a moment to issue a very important "THANK YOU" to YOU! The deviantART Community. On the heels of our 12th Birthday, I've looked back at the projects that my team have undertaken and realized that in the last year, especially, the deviantART community has stepped up and helped to make projects like #projecteducate and #ArtHistoryProject successful. Basking in the glory of finally getting recognised for your hard efforts and photographic skill is pretty awesome and at the start of this week I took the opportunity to enjoy *Fuzzypiggy's after he got published in a UK Photography Magazine. It's really nice when something like that happens and the knowledge that across the country - and because of deviantART and other networks - across the world, people are looking at your work. And if you're me, smiling! I once stumbled across *lauren-rabbit's work in Black and White Photography Magazine and was truly proud that somebody I had found here on deviantART was here in my mag! So have you been published? Has your work received any recognition that makes you proud? What are your tips to getting out there and having your work showcased?

I read a very interesting article this week debating Photography Vs Literature and which one of the two tells us more. Of course there is always the element that a picture could be accompanied by words but neither aspect is enough to tell a whole story. But as the article says, Photography has become a universal constant in the world today and is accessible to nearly everybody. Yet many still believe that only pure narration can truly tell a story. What are your thoughts? As Photographers we can choose to limit what we tell or show with a photograph, we can even mislead. Can we convey more with words? Or more with an image? You could describe a person with words but never truly give an accurate picture of who they are visually without a photograph...

It's All About Presentation (Mostly)As more and more people start taking pictures of their nether regions on their iphones or posing myspace style in front of their HTC's - the competitive world of getting a Daily Deviation gets just that much harder...It's All About Presentation (Mostly) in Community Relations More Like ThisI kid. But... daily, I am bombarded with awesome suggestions (which I love) and I'm not complaining about. But there has to be a criteria of sorts, that sets an image above the rest. Here are a few things I look for that you might not have noticed before... The first thing I look at when I stumble across an image or view a suggestion from somebody, is how the artist has presented their work to the deviantART Community.

Your image isn't everything. Not anymore. In the past I have given Daily Deviations to pieces with titles that are a combination of random letters and numbers, or that are very obviously still the source file title - or that tends to be just a keyboard mash-up. Why you feature stolen work?!?!Lately there seem to have been a few myths flying around in particular with regards to how we as Community Volunteers, give Daily Deviations. Many people seem to think that we sit at our desks in dark little rooms and let out evil laughter whilst we purposefully feature stolen work. The dark rooms and laughter - well I can't say yes or no on that one! But I can promise you it's not our intent to give exposure to people who have stolen work. I recently featured a piece of work that turned out to be stolen. However I went into extensive conversations with the artist before I featured it, and with added metadata and dates, it's difficult to know where to draw the line. I've given people the benefit of the doubt before - and it's worked out nicely as their work has been legitimate. Below are some comments I have seen being thrown around the past few days - and hopefully an attempt to bust the myth. Why you feature stolen work?!?! in Community Relations More Like This

"A photograph says that you were so important, I stopped everything else to come and preserve you."
This week Horacio Coppola died. Many will not know the name, but in the Photography world he was pretty awesome. He died age 105, and was famous for taking Black and White photographs of Buenos Aires in the 1930s. But he also photographed normality. Some of his works included egg and twine - quite simply an egg and a piece of twine. Others featured a typewriter, but ultimately he shot normality, the everyday things that people overlooked. He's said to be one of very few photographers who manage to capture the romance, vitality and squalor of a great city. So a legend has died, but somewhere another will rise up through the ranks. Who inspires you? Which historical Artists have provoked you to reach the place where you are now? Or who you aspire to be?

Artisan Crafts (Culinary) & Still Life Photography
DeviantART is a hive of activity with work from all sorts of genres and areas being shared and submitted on a daily basis. So it's only natural that sometimes, confusion happens. And there are a few pesky categories that are difficult to define and differentiate between. We've recently found that Photography -> Still Life and Artisan Crafts are a great example of this.

As the year crawls into the final quarter - lots of challenges and daily photo tasks and so on begin to conclude. I have personally been challenging myself with the 365 Photography challenge - a photo a day for a whole year. It has been tricky to say the least, especially as I set myself a high standard of capturing more than one Photo a day - but also rewarding. Setting yourself a challenge, whether it's following the 52 week photography challenges that are out there, or doing a themed challenge such as 365 breakfasts - is a great way of expanding on your portfolio. Whilst it sometimes means that you struggle to find anything interesting to photograph or share, on the days that you do, you're one step closer to building another aspect of your portfolio.
Next week in Photography Troubleshooting - we will be looking at Money Matters and so

Have you studied Photography? I'm intrigued to know whether or not a qualification in Photography has made you a better, or indeed a worse photographer. Or has there been no change? This week, The Photography Blog asks whether or not a Photography Degree is worth the paper it's written on. Graduation in any field these days doesn't mean that you'll immediately get a job in your desired area. Not these days. So is it worth embarking on study related to photography when in the end, you could get to the same place without the paper stating what you are capable of? Photography is one of a small number of job areas where what you've done speaks higher volumes than whether or not you're

You want to suggest it as a Daily Deviation because you believe it truly deserves to be seen by the community as a whole. But how to properly suggest a DD? This article will explain the process.PE Daily Deviations - So you want to suggest DDs? in Projects More Like This
Things to check before sending a suggestion:
The first thing you need to check is if the artist has been given a Daily Deviation in the past 6 months. Volunteers cannot feature anyone who's had a DD in that period of time with no exceptions, as this has been hard-coded into deviantART's system.
"But how do I check an artist's Daily Deviations?" you may ask. Simply go to their gallery, click browse and scroll down. If they have any DDs, you'll be able to find a link to them at the bottom of the page. Alternatively, you can add "/dds" after their profile url and click enter on your browser's address bar.

Thomas and John Knoll: the brothers behind the magic
Back in 1987, Thomas Knoll was working on his Ph.D. thesis as part of his studies on image processing at the University of Michigan. He had bought a new Apple Mac Plus to help with the thesis, but was frustrated by the fact the computer wouldn't display greyscale images on the monochrome monitor. This issue wouldn't stop him and so he decided to write his own code in order to be able to see the images in his new computer.
His brother John was coincidentally working for ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) on image processing at the time and discovered Thomas' code during a holiday visit. Clearly impressed by his brother's achievements, both began collaborating on a bigger applic

Literature Previews, DDs, and YouIntroducing a new policy regarding Literature Gallery DD features.Literature Previews, DDs, and You in Literature More Like This
While not everyone uses preview images and they're not technically part of the work, we're going to require that preview images be properly credited for future features. This does include preview images you've customized that use texture or other such resources.
An important note: Not all images are stock. If an image isn't stock and you want to use it as your preview, please make sure that you've obtained explicit permission from the artist. We will also accept previewed stories that were done for a picture-based prompt if the prompter asked permission to use those images. Of course, you'll need to link to the prompt in your comments.

Sometimes this reaction is rage. Or something close to it.
Sometimes when you see a DD you don't like or get or something, it's doing exactly what the artist intended. But other times, it has nothing to do with the art itself. Because, you know what, we all see DDs we don't "get" every now and then. I'll say it now: I don't like every single DD that has been posted.
More relevant to this conversation, I don't get why some of the DDs that have been posted were considered featurable (which, as we're trying to get across, really means: I don't personally think that some pieces merit 24-hour massive exposure).
And I have the right to think these things.
You do, too.
What's the appropriate place to find out why something was given a DD?

Why should I care? 1) If your work isn't in the right gallery, the people most interested in reading it are never gonna find it! 2) Miscatted works cannot be featured as DDs, to put it simply. 3) Some galleries are more full of miscats than others, and this makes it very difficult to find what you're looking for.

So how can you back up all that different advice, or alternately open with a question that won't be confusing?

I will have to tell you it's not valid, and that'll make me sad.
With a tip of the hat to all the people who came up with alternate universes as a way to explore awesome, impossible ideas...I bring you the alternate universe contest for original literature!
This contest is open from January 18-February 18 (PST, aka dA time). No extensions.
The process is simple.
Start with one of your own stories. It doesn't have to be super-fleshed out, but it does need to be written down in some form, even if it's as simple as a series of character sketches and the world they live in.Change something important. There's a lot of options. Ask yourself 'what if X had happened differently' and go from there. Aside from changing key plot points, you may want to significantly alter a character (yes, genderbending is acceptable).
Write it down! Not completely willy-nilly; there will be guidelines, of course. Oh my stars and gart

If you're a forum regular you may have noticed the forum stickies being updated. There are a couple left, but we'll have those up for you as soon as we're happy with how they look.
Also, there's a brand new Need HELP thread that you may find useful even if you're not a forum regular!
We're hoping to make the forums easier to use and understand. Here are some key highlights:
The forum rules are now titled "READ BEFORE POSTING"—we're hoping this will make them more obvious to newbies (thank you `raspil for that suggestion way back when). The first bullet point of every forum refers to FAQ 801, which applies across the board and should be read by everyone before posting a thread. The second one always includes a link to the Need HELP thread (see above for a link, it's super-nifty).Some things that were previously only mentioned in the Deviants Forum are now in :faq801:We've added
Literature Gallery RestructureUPDATED GALLERY STRUCTURE - APRIL 4Literature Gallery Restructure in Literature More Like This
If you haven't browsed Literature lately, it's a mess. Sure, some of it comes from people whose work truly transcends genres (ever read the Library of Congress classification for Gravity's Rainbow?) and some of it comes from how people choose to interpret certain genres (godsdamnit, 'dark' is not the same as 'horror'! No, this gallery hasn't existed in ~6 years. Stop judging me).
But a lot of it comes from people having trouble navigating the galleries.
Based on your feedback and more backroom discussion, we've reupdated things! Please keep in mind that a lot of discussion went into the updates, so when you do get mad about them do it with the assumption that there's a reason behind this

What is Digital Darkroom? What is Digital Darkroom? What is Digital Darkroom? in Editorials More Like This
Digital Darkroom is the evolution, converting chemical processes to digital ones, cellulose and silver to pixels and bytes. The first digital camera, weighing 8 pounds with a resolution of 0.01 megapixels, was built in 1975 and recorded black and white images to a cassette tape. The first camera which recorded images as computerised files was made by Fuji in 1988 and the first commercially available digital camera was created in 1990.
The Digital Darkroom gallery on dA is for photographs which have been digitally processed or edited with the use of computer software to emulate traditional and alternative film darkroom techniques. It's also a place for very modern processes like HDR photography, which involves creating images with a higher range of visible tones than regular photography.
Most of the functions available in digital editing software were created to mimic actual darkroom
What is Traditional Darkroom? What is Traditional Darkroom? What is Traditional Darkroom? in Editorials More Like This
Traditional Darkroom is where it all began. It started in a world where the word 'photography' didn't yet exist and the art of creating images of reality with light and chemicals sat somewhere between science and magic. Did you know that the mathematicians Aristotle and Euclid describe pinhole cameras in the 4th and 5th centuries?
In the early 1800s, artist/inventors like Louis Dageurre and Henry Fox Talbot (among others) experimented with ways of fixing images using chemicals, including silver compounds, following exposures on materials like glass and metal, lasting from several minutes to several hours. By 1840, Talbot was creating negative images using the calotype process and John Herschel had invented the cyanotype process (where the term 'blueprint' comes from) and created the first glass negative in 1839.
In the middle part of the 1800s, the wet plate collodion process be

Darkroom on dA is a tribute to the traditional, involving chemical developing and printing techniques which have barely changed since the birth of photography, a symbol of the modern, making use of technological advances in digital processing, and a whole lot of amazing and beautiful things in between.
While the majority of Photography galleries on dA are subject-based, Darkroom is technique-based. Photographs using Darkroom techniques are generally accepted in the other photography galleries too, but if you wish to categorise your Darkroom photography submission based on how it was created, then Photography > Darkroom is here to allow you to do that.
If you're not a photographer, or you arrived on your photographic journey at a time when digital was in full swing, you may have never shot on film, been temporarily blinded by walking into daylight after hours spen

Categorising Darkroom - Digital or Traditional? On dA, the galleries for Darkroom Photography are split into two categories - Digital and Traditional.Categorising Darkroom - Digital or Traditional? in Editorials More Like This
Digital Darkroom is for Photographs which have been digitally processed or edited with the use of computer software to emulate traditional and alternative film darkroom techniques.
Traditional Darkroom is for Scans of photographic prints and negatives where the images have been physically developed and/or printed using traditional and alternative film darkroom techniques. This gallery is not for digitally created or edited images.
It seems like an obvious difference, right? How much further explaining really needs to be done? Well, just a little, because there are a few exceptions to what you might assume to be hard and fast rules.
The Rule
Photos created with the involvement of a digital camera should never be placed in Darkroom > Traditional.

To be honest, when it's the first type of request and it isn't just a copy-pasta to a hundred people, I'll consider it. I like to help people have a better dA experience and not everyone can afford to buy a Premium Membership, so if someone asks really nicely for a bit of assistance, I'm usually happy to help if I can. But when it's the second kind of request, it's just rude. This issue features HDR (high dynamic range) photography, which allows for a greater dynamic range (variation between the light and dark areas) than regular photography. This can have a range of effects, between creating an image more like what you see with your eyes and depicting hyper-real results with a painterly feeling.
Some digital cameras can shoot HDR in-camera but HDR images can also be created using digital editing software with multiple exposures of the same scene. 'Fake' HDR can also be created from just one exposure. Here are some beautiful examples of HDR photography...

PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the LegendDaily Deviations, or DDs . . . for some deviants, receiving one is the epitome of awesomesauce in the deviantART world. For others, they are a nice way to show off the work of lesser-known artists. Still others treat them as a special way to bring attention to great art that exemplifies works being done by a particular gallery or community.PE: Daily Deviations - The Myth and the Legend in Projects More Like This
Perhaps because there are so many different ways of conceptualizing DDs, there are also many myths and misconceptions. I would like to address some of those myths by responding to the ones most frequently heard. Please note that these opinions are mine and reflect my experiences with the photomanipulation community, but perhaps they will be informative nevertheless.
Myth 1: DDs should always be perfect.
To many of us, the ideal Daily Deviation goes to an artist with amazing talent whose work draws you in and makes you think, "Wow, everyone needs to see this!" A DD should move you, inspire you, and provoke you to think, b
Community Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?DDs: The deviantART definitionCommunity Voices: What is a Daily Deviation? in Projects More Like This
So, as the title says, What in the world IS a Daily Deviation (DD), anyway?
You know what deviantART says about it, right? Under :faq61: it says:
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
That says nothing about a DD being a perfect specimen of art-- in fact, it doesn't even use the word "art" at all.Basically, as CVs, when we are giving a DD, we are doing so because we think the image is interesting and well-done and deserves your attention. It may be technically exquisite. It may be technically quite good but exceptionally thought-provoking. It may be exceedingly creative. It may be all of these things! Above all else, it should stand out in some way from others in that medium or gallery.

When we don't see enough of a particular art form, it is difficult for us to understand or appreciate it. This project aims to bring you features that you might not have seen otherwise from a variety of galleries around dA. For example, I tend to live and breathe photomanipulations and (to a lesser extent) digital art, and I really enjoyed taking a moment to browse the non-photomanipulation galleries for treasures. I found many, and I hope you will enjoy the features I have chosen.

Photomanip News and Feature 03 AugustHi everyone,Photomanip News and Feature 03 August in Digital Art More Like This
The status quo in the photomanipulation community is GO! GO! GO! We have been extremely busy with creating, supporting one another, and dreaming up contests and other fun challenges. I have been delayed in reporting our news for personal reasons, so this news article is jam-packed with goodness that you, the photomanipulation community, need to know!
Let's get started!
Calling on Community Leaders
We have a wonderful photomanipulation community here, and I'm really honored to serve you all as your Community Volunteer (CV). I have been trying to post weekly news, conduct interviews and do features, post DDs, organize Project Educate and other community challenges, host critique events, and hold contests that I hope are challenging and interesting. I absolutely love doing all of this, but I am also trying to get a Ph.D. and am going to run into trouble juggling it all in the Fall.

Welcome to Photomanipulation Month!Greetings!Welcome to Photomanipulation Month! in Projects More Like This
Yes, you read that right: Photomanip MONTH!
When I first came on board as the Community Volunteer for Photomanipulation, I wanted to have a photomanipulation workshop month, or a "boot camp," to help our community members hone their skills and to help people from outside the community learn more about what we do. ^Kaz-D had the brilliant idea of turning it into a Photomanipulation Month with Project Educate! So, here we are!
This month will be filled with contests and challenges, games and activities, and lots of chances to win fabulous prizes! We hope everyone will learn something along the way as well.
About this month
We see this month as an opportunity for all of us to share what we know and build a stronger community. We had originally conceived of this month as "Advanced Photomanipulation Month," but we figured that might be exclusive to a great portion of our community.

Every week we will try to feature a new member of our community. If you know of a new member (who has been here 6 months or less) and want to have a "welcome" feature for them, please note their name to =ChisSweetArt.
This week, we are welcoming =WriteGirl, Tanya, a writer-turned-manipulator! She has been in our community for about a month, and she has already contributed a great deal through her nicely-developing artistry and inspiring sense of creativity. Here are some of her lovely works for you to admire:

Photomanipulation vs. Digital Mixed MediaWhat is this series?Photomanipulation vs. Digital Mixed Media in Digital Art More Like This
The "Fix that Miscat" series has been designed to help educate deviantART members about the different galleries to which they can submit their art. Tired of submitting to a particular gallery and having your art moved to a different one? We will help minimize this occurrence by examining pairs of categories that frequently get confused and doing our best to clarify them for you.
What is a Photomanipulation?
What it is:
On deviantART, we define photomanipulation as "two or more PHOTOGRAPHIC elements that have been combined to form something NEW."
This means that:At least 2 elements must be from photographs.
The result must be something new and different, distinguishable from the original.
What it is not:It does not involve 3D images, even if there are also photos involved.

Well we’ve had a fascinating week so far; a week which hopefully has provided some insight not only to the process of DD selection but helped you understand what we look for in DDs as CVs. As we draw to the end of this week, I bring you an article which will whet your Saturday with thoughts that don’t just apply to the DD feature, but something which should be a consideration to everything you submit to dA. Why is Presentation important?
Art isn’t always about just being “creative”. There are techniques and skills which develop over time which contribute to the quality of the work you produce and alongside this comes a developed understanding of good presentation.
Good presentation could be anything from cropping a photograph, to spell checking your literature. These are common sense things that in the rush of wanting to show off your creativity can sometimes be

Literature News June/July 2012Hello all! As you've probably guessed by the title of the journal and the Community Relations journal skin, this is the monthly update from the literature community volunteers.Literature News June/July 2012 in Literature More Like This
Discussion!
#CRLiterature
As announced last week, #CRLiterature is now open for membership. Over the year it has been open, it used to be watch only, but `thorns and I want to start building this group into something more interactive and community driven. Over the next few months, we will be adding little elements to the group to achieve this, but we want to know what you as the literature community think you want to get out of this group. Ideally we want to make this a community hub- soon members will be able to cross-post their projects/lit news journals so the information is better spread and we want to encourage more challenges and education too. Please feel free to share your thoughts on this, we want your feedback!

Self Harm Awareness Day 2013: RecoveryHello allSelf Harm Awareness Day 2013: Recovery in Happenings More Like This
You may have seen ^NicSwaner's wonderful article on Self -Injury Awareness day already, but at this time of year, I always post an article on this subject too anually. Self Harm is a topic which is personal to me as I am sure it is to many others. It's been 8 years since I last harmed myself, and since then I have been involved not only in personal recovery, but projects and organisations that also offer help, information and advice to those who need it.
Today, March 1st, is Self Harm Awareness day all over the world. It is a day where people are encouraged to look beyond stereotypes, ask questions and try to understand a little more about self harm. It is also a time where I feel it is important to speak out about personal experiences and raise the awareness beyond sharing the facts.

Literature DD Roundup: June 2012 June Literature Daily DeviationsLiterature DD Roundup: June 2012 in Literature More Like This
Hello Everyone!
Why is this year moving so fast?
I have received several notes from people asking why we have dropped from 2 DDs a day to just one in Lit (with the exception of Saturday), so I thought perhaps it is worth explaining publically our reasoning.
As you all know, it can be really difficult to find a good range of Literature deviations that we can feature and trying to find one every single day is a painful task and we would be concerned that the quality of our choices could dip if we pushed ourselves to find one every single day. With just 2 of us now, we have to work harder to find the ones we do. Unlike visual art, we have to spend time reading every single piece we make a decision on and this is time consuming.
If we received more suggestions from the community, we would perhaps consider increasing some days to two, but for now it will remain on one until a third CV joins the team. Please do keep your s
