Everyday we're CV'ingAs a Community Volunteer - I do as much or as little within the community that I feel comfortable doing. We're not pressured to do this and that, we don't even have to give a Daily Deviation every day, we choose how we promote our selected galleries/chats and forums and we're not fixed to any specific rule on how much or how little we do. But I do believe that it's important to share with you just what the community volunteers do and why we do it. More importantly it's so easy to get lost on this site full of many people - and miss out on the awesome that's going on. So I'm going to share with you exactly what the latest awesome is...
Almost every week since October last year the Community Volunteers have been working hard both independently and as part of small teams to bring You Project Educate.
Project Educate is about bringing forward art forms whether they are popular or overlooked and giving

In memory of the young LGBT people who lost their lives to suicide, Brittany encouraged her friends to wear purple on a day in October -- a day that came to be known as Spirit Day. Since then, GLAAD has helped turn Spirit Day into a global event that inspires millions of individuals, celebrities, TV personalities, media outlets, companies and schools to wear purple in a stand against bullying.
While Spirit Day does focus on the LGBT community, I believe that it's anti-bullying message is relevant to every community. It only get's better, if we take the pledge to make it so.
Practice compassion and understanding, and treat others how you would like to be treated and we can make a difference.

1. Happy Holidays and Merry New Year
As the old year begins to fade into the sunset, it is customary to reflect on the passing year and make plans for the upcoming one. Some do this in the form of resolutions, some people make action plans, some people just swing into the new year the same way they swung out of the old one Whatever way you intend to welcome in 2013, I hope you're surrounded by love and that you do it safely!
I've been reflecting on the year and like many, with some focus on the unimaginable events of the last few weeks. Specifically, the shooting in Newtown. I know that it's "human nature" to want to find

Over the past few months, we've been diligently working on cleaning up the category tree of old and unused categories. While most of this will go unnoticed by the community, what you will notice is the change from "Miscellaneous" galleries to "Other". The reason for this change is simple. The concept of Miscellaneous leads one to believe that it's a junk drawer category for everything under the sun when the intention was to be an "Other" category for deviations that don't fit well in other sub-categories of the tree. We're also working on u

Presenting: Community VolunteersA BRIEF OVERVIEWPresenting: Community Volunteers in Deviant Events More Like This
Over the years, we've been proud to offer the opportunity to volunteer with deviantART. We believe that our volunteers play a crucial role in helping our community develop and grow in positive ways.
The Gallery Moderator (previously known as Gallery Director) and Message Network Admin (MN@) teams have become a much loved and appreciated role, with many volunteers proudly detailing their experience in applications to enter into successful careers with companies who all recognise the value of volunteering in such a vibrant and eclectic community. Did you know that some of our now full time Staff were once volunteers? fourteenthstar, Moonbeam13, Pachunka, aunjuli, y2jenn, damphyr, Tachy-on, dxd and Ikue all volunteered in various roles -- and we are all very proud of that fact!
Over the past few months, we've been taking a close look at the volunteer experience -- what's worked, what hasn't worked a
Why you feature stolen work?!?!Lately there seem to have been a few myths flying around in particular with regards to how we as Community Volunteers, give Daily Deviations. Many people seem to think that we sit at our desks in dark little rooms and let out evil laughter whilst we purposefully feature stolen work. The dark rooms and laughter - well I can't say yes or no on that one! But I can promise you it's not our intent to give exposure to people who have stolen work. I recently featured a piece of work that turned out to be stolen. However I went into extensive conversations with the artist before I featured it, and with added metadata and dates, it's difficult to know where to draw the line. I've given people the benefit of the doubt before - and it's worked out nicely as their work has been legitimate. Below are some comments I have seen being thrown around the past few days - and hopefully an attempt to bust the myth. Why you feature stolen work?!?! in Deviant Events More Like This

It's All About Presentation (Mostly)As more and more people start taking pictures of their nether regions on their iphones or posing myspace style in front of their HTC's - the competitive world of getting a Daily Deviation gets just that much harder... I kid. But... daily, I am bombarded with awesome suggestions (which I love) and I'm not complaining about. But there has to be a criteria of sorts, that sets an image above the rest. Here are a few things I look for that you might not have noticed before... The first thing I look at when I stumble across an image or view a suggestion from somebody, is how the artist has presented their work to the deviantART Community. It's All About Presentation (Mostly) in Deviant Events More Like This
Your image isn't everything. Not anymore. In the past I have given Daily Deviations to pieces with titles that are a combination of random letters and numbers, or that are very obviously still the source file title - or that tends to be just a keyboard mash-up. Everyday CVs are sent many many notes suggesting pieces o

"A photograph says that you were so important, I stopped everything else to come and preserve you."
This week Horacio Coppola died. Many will not know the name, but in the Photography world he was pretty awesome. He died age 105, and was famous for taking Black and White photographs of Buenos Aires in the 1930s. But he also photographed normality. Some of his works included egg and twine - quite simply an egg and a piece of twine. Others featured a typewriter, but ultimately he shot normality, the everyday things that people overlooked. He's said to be one of very few photographers who manage to capture the romance, vitality and squalor of a great city. So a legend has died, but somewhere another will rise up through the ranks. Who inspires you? Which historical Artists have provoked you to reach the place where you are now? Or who you aspire to be?

Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing AutumnFor many Photographers, Autumn is now officially here and is one of the most exciting seasons to capture in terms of colour, change and vistas. Early morning mist, late afternoon sun, orange, red and golden hues - Autumn has a lot to offer in many countries. If you're like me, Autumn often arrives all at once and it can be tricky to know how to make the best of the season before it's over. A couple of days of high winds and rain can ruin the best Autumnal captures by ripping the leaves down before you've even got the chance to snap - so it's great to be prepared for the season.Photography Troubleshooting: Capturing Autumn in Deviant Events More Like This
Leading lines are particularly useful. Yet so many people quote ' Look for leading lines...' or 'You've captured the leading lines here perfectly' and really do we even know properly what they are? The purpose of a leading line is to draw a viewers eye into the photograph and then on a journey - through it. Think of it as a visual narrative. They can be intentional and ind

In the news this week there has been a spotlight on Karren Brady, a photographer who has won a copyright ruling. The news article itself is interesting but the cautions that it turfs up for the future and current generations of photographers are slightly more concerning. The general feeling that has started to develop is that if you have assistance with setting up a shot, making a scene, posing a model and making up a person for example, those people may well have rights to your work. This is also being debated with regards to post-production and if you get somebody else to edit your work. What are your thoughts on this? And when attributing this to the deviantART community, what

Members are more than welcome to self suggest their own art work for a Daily Deviation, in fact many CVs highly encourage self suggestions. While self suggesting may have been something people frowned upon in the past, this is thankfully no longer the case as we all recognize the need for self promotion in the competitive world of art.
But suggesting my own work is embarassing
There is no shame in trying to get yourself and your work seen. By self suggesting you are merely looking to gain more exposure from a broader audience. Look at it this way, if you're not willing to advertise your own work and get more clients and exposure, who will?
When we CVs receive self suggestions we treat them the same as we would any other suggestion so you can easily treat a self suggestion the same as you would a submission of your art to a group so more users can see the piece. While we do not guarantee that we
PE DDs: When It's Not Always PositiveWhen DDs Go AwryPE DDs: When It's Not Always Positive in Deviant Events More Like This
Daily Deviations, or “DDs,” are frequently held in very high esteem on deviantART. After all, what artist does not want his or her work displayed for more than 20 million viewers to see and admire? The benefits of receiving a DD feature include increased exposure for your work and a day in the spotlight for you as an artist. Many people therefore view DDs as badges of honor, awards that make them proud and validate the time they spend in our community.
Be careful what you wish for!
Don’t get us wrong-- DDs are wonderful for the purposes listed above. But, they can also bring a lot of drama upon the artist, especially if they are controversial.
Let’s talk about some of the sources of this drama.
Some people feel that people who post art-- and especially those whose art is worthy of a Daily Deviation-- should have thick enough skin to accept criticism as well as praise. They argue that criticism is part

I don't really remember the exact point when I started paying attention to DDs. I guess, I saw these beautiful pictures at the bottom of my page. Gradually, I understood that they were a kind of "award" for outstanding pieces. I was also wondering how some people could suggest DDs! By searching here and there, I found the way.
I eventually decided to send my first suggestion to rydi1689, the then Fan Art Gallery Moderator. She is so kind, she accepted it immediately! In this section of Daily Deviations (DD) PE week I wanted to write about how your suggestions are processed and then turned into DDs, but with a bit more of a focus on the process of how we Community Volunteers (CVs) utilize the note system. I felt it was a place where some common problems arise which may not be talked about all too often resulting in confusion and frustration for both suggesters and CVs.
The Note System
I think many are aware of this but just for the sake of being clear, CVs use the same exact note system as every other user on the site. We do not have any special bells and whistles to organize our notes other than the same tools you all are also given. There is no special tool or program that sorts or does anything special with our DD suggestions for us, it is entirely up to us, how we choose to sort them in our note system.
Let's take a closer look at how the process works, shall we?

PE Daily Deviations - So you want to suggest DDs?You're browsing deviantART or are simply checking your message centre and find a wonderful art piece. You want to suggest it as a Daily Deviation because you believe it truly deserves to be seen by the community as a whole. But how to properly suggest a DD? This article will explain the process.PE Daily Deviations - So you want to suggest DDs? in Deviant Events More Like This
Things to check before sending a suggestion:
The first thing you need to check is if the artist has been given a Daily Deviation in the past 6 months. Volunteers cannot feature anyone who's had a DD in that period of time with no exceptions, as this has been hard-coded into deviantART's system.
"But how do I check an artist's Daily Deviations?" you may ask. Simply go to their gallery, click browse and scroll down. If they have any DDs, you'll be able to find a link to them at the bottom of the page. Alternatively, you can add "/dds" after their profile url and click enter on your browser's address bar.

While there is some overlap with science fiction, horror and other speculative fiction art, there are unique elements not generally found in other forms of speculative fiction art. Thomas and John Knoll: the brothers behind the magic
Back in 1987, Thomas Knoll was working on his Ph.D. thesis as part of his studies on image processing at the University of Michigan. He had bought a new Apple Mac Plus to help with the thesis, but was frustrated by the fact the computer wouldn't display greyscale images on the monochrome monitor. This issue wouldn't stop him and so he decided to write his own code in order to be able to see the images in his new computer.
His brother John was coincidentally working for ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) on image processing at the time and discovered Thomas' code during a holiday visit. Clearly impressed by his brother's achievements, both began collaborating on a bigger applic

PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your workHello all!PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your work in Deviant Events More Like This
Well we’ve had a fascinating week so far; a week which hopefully has provided some insight not only to the process of DD selection but helped you understand what we look for in DDs as CVs. As we draw to the end of this week, I bring you an article which will whet your Saturday with thoughts that don’t just apply to the DD feature, but something which should be a consideration to everything you submit to dA. I am talking about deviation presentation.
Why is Presentation important?
Art isn’t always about just being “creative”. There are techniques and skills which develop over time which contribute to the quality of the work you produce and alongside this comes a developed understanding of good presentation.
Good presentation could be anything from cropping a photograph, to spell checking your literature. These are common sense things that in the rush of wanting to show off your creativity can sometimes be

Self Harm Awareness day 1st March 2012Self Harm Awareness day 1st March 2012 in Art Features More Like This
Today marks an awareness day over a subject that can mean many things to many people. Self Harm (or Self Injury) is the act of physical damage to oneself, usually as a coping strategy for expressing deep distress or coping in difficult situations. Self harm commonly is associated with cutting, but can also refer to any physical damage to the self including burning, hitting, taking overdoses, swallowing chemicals, bleaching, hair pulling ( trichotilliomania), scratching and so forth.
You may know what it is, but it is often the reasons why that people are not familiar with. There is still this belief and stereotype surrounding the type of person likely to harming them-self, but the truth is, it could be anyone no matter what gender, culture or age. The reasons behind self harm can be such a huge variety- different people cope in different ways with different distresses. Such issues that may trigger self harm might be bullying, t

Hopefully it will be interesting for some, useful for others or simply a good reading if you're really boring.
What makes me choose a deviation to be featured?
Such a simple question with such an indefinite answer, and I apologize in advance for giving such a vague response but I'll put it simple: Sometimes not even I know!
There's not a secret formula I have to determine if a piece is going to be featured or not, sometimes I really have a hard time making a decision and it really is a case-by-case situation. The deviation needs to STAND OUT, be different, have that "wow" factor. Unfortunately this is very difficult to explain. However ther
So you want to be a CV...Sometimes I like to wander through the communityrelations group, and I always come across comments from people so willing to become volunteers, I constantly come across people who say "Applied for ___ gallery!", "I can't wait to be 18 to apply!", "I so want to be on the team!", there are some who list the complete CR roster in their personal profiles, who openly say in their tagline, signatures or devIDs "Hoping to be a CV one day", etc. This is specially evident in the The Community Relations Team journal, where the opening positions are listed. So you want to be a CV... in Art Features More Like This
To those people: take this journal just as a personal opinion and a friendly advice from a fellow community member, someone who loves the community and is willing to contribute and give back the way one can. This comes from my personal experience, shouldn't be taken as the whole Community Relations nor deviantArt's official stance.

Mixed Media within deviantArt refers to artwork in the making of which more than one medium has been employed. For example, a drawing that combines color pencils, watercolors and inks in the same canvas.
To be considered as Mixed Media, an artwork needs to combine 2 or more traditional or digital mediums. Perhaps because there are so many different ways of conceptualizing DDs, there are also many myths and misconceptions. I would like to address some of those myths by responding to the ones most frequently heard. Please note that these opinions are mine and reflect my experiences with the photomanipulation community, but perhaps they will be informative nevertheless.
Myth 1: DDs should always be perfect.
To many of us, the ideal Daily Deviation goes to an artist with amazing talent whose work draws you in and makes you think, "Wow, everyone needs to see this!" A DD should move you, inspire you, and provoke you to think, b
Community Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?DDs: The deviantART definitionCommunity Voices: What is a Daily Deviation? in Deviant Events More Like This
So, as the title says, What in the world IS a Daily Deviation (DD), anyway?
You know what deviantART says about it, right? Under :faq61: it says:
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
That says nothing about a DD being a perfect specimen of art-- in fact, it doesn't even use the word "art" at all. Basically, as CVs, when we are giving a DD, we are doing so because we think the image is interesting and well-done and deserves your attention. It may be technically exquisite. It may be technically quite good but exceptionally thought-provoking. It may be exceedingly creative. It may be all of these things! Above all else, it should stand out in some way from others in that medium or gallery.
Photomanipulation vs. Digital Mixed MediaWhat is this series?Photomanipulation vs. Digital Mixed Media in Art Features More Like This
The "Fix that Miscat" series has been designed to help educate deviantART members about the different galleries to which they can submit their art. Tired of submitting to a particular gallery and having your art moved to a different one? We will help minimize this occurrence by examining pairs of categories that frequently get confused and doing our best to clarify them for you.
What is a Photomanipulation?
What it is:
On deviantART, we define photomanipulation as "two or more PHOTOGRAPHIC elements that have been combined to form something NEW."
This means that:
At least 2 elements must be from photographs.
The result must be something new and different, distinguishable from the original.
What it is not:
It does not involve 3D images, even if there are also photos involved.

Yes, you read that right: Photomanip MONTH!
When I first came on board as the Community Volunteer for Photomanipulation, I wanted to have a photomanipulation workshop month, or a "boot camp," to help our community members hone their skills and to help people from outside the community learn more about what we do. Kaz-D had the brilliant idea of turning it into a Photomanipulation Month with Project Educate! So, here we are!
This month will be filled with contests and challenges, games and activities, and lots of chances to win fabulous prizes! We hope everyone will learn something along the way as well.
About this month
We see this month as an opportunity for all of us to share what we know and build a stronger community. We had originally conceived of this month as "Advanced Photomanipulation Month," but we figured that might be exclusive to a great portion of our community.

I absolutely love doing all of this, but I am also trying to get a Ph.D. and am going to run into trouble juggling it all in the Fall.
So, I will be asking a few of you who I know well and trust to hel
Digital drawing. Digital painting. Same thing?Hello, dA!Digital drawing. Digital painting. Same thing? in Art Features More Like This
As you may be aware, we are in the process of revisiting gallery descriptions and making sure that all of our submissions categories make sense and are useful to you. We also want to make sure that categories are mutually exclusive so that people don't submit their deviations to the wrong galleries/categories by mistake.
This process brought out a very interesting conversation among some members of the CV team. Specifically, we started talking about what, fundamentally, the difference between digital drawing and digital painting was. Does it depend on brush strokes? Is there some technique used on one but not the other? What sets the two apart?
. . . OR, are they essentially the same thing?
Here's what the submission guidelines currently say about digital drawing and digital painting:
Digital Drawing: Digital art drawings created using computer-aided drawing tools or digital techniques.
Digital Painting: Digita
Celebrating Diversity #3Hello, everyone!Celebrating Diversity #3 in Deviant Events More Like This
When we don't see enough of a particular art form, it is difficult for us to understand or appreciate it. This project aims to bring you features that you might not have seen otherwise from a variety of galleries around dA. For example, I tend to live and breathe photomanipulations and (to a lesser extent) digital art, and I really enjoyed taking a moment to browse the non-photomanipulation galleries for treasures. I found many, and I hope you will enjoy the features I have chosen.

Arts and Health: The First FeatureHi everyone,Arts and Health: The First Feature in Deviant Events More Like This
I wanted to share with you some work from a very special group here on dA. Arts-and-Health is dedicated to providing an outlet of expression for people who live with, have lived with, or know someone who has lived with a serious medical condition. (That, in all likelihood, means YOU, as we all know someone who has suffered.) It could be a physical condition like cancer or diabetes, or it might be a mental health condition. Regardless of your condition, you have a story to tell.
Our members bravely tell their stories through their art. We are about to start monthly challenges in which members tell their story around a particular theme, such as healing, endurance, or darkness. Every month we (as a group) will select the most powerful submission, and that deviant will receive 1,000 dA points. Our next challenge begins December 1, and we will announce the theme on that day.
Everyone is welcome to join Arts-and-Health.
And now for the feature of our voices,

This Rising Stars series will highlight some artists who are developing good, strong photomanipulation skills and deserve your attention. Each of these artists shines in a unique way. This week, I am focusing on a fantastic up-and-coming Dark/Fantasy artist. eerilyfair has been on deviantART for 5 years and has shown dedication to developing her skills as well as becoming an involved and active part of the photomanipulation community. I hope you enjoy the brief interview and feature and take a moment to check out her really cool and eclectic gallery.
Program of choice: Photoshop
How did you get into photomanipulation?
I did not know at first what photomanipulation is. At first I thought that everything would be painted, and have admired the artist for it. That's about four years ago. I wanted to do something like this, too, but I used to do j
Photomanip News and Feature - 12 AugustHi everyone,Photomanip News and Feature - 12 August in Art Features More Like This
I hope you have enjoyed your week! It's been kind-of quiet around here lately; have you all been at the beach?
Here is what I know is going on in our community.
Please welcome . . .
Every week we will try to feature a new member of our community. If you know of a new member (who has been here 6 months or less) and want to have a "welcome" feature for them, please note their name to ChisSweetArt.
This week, we are welcoming WriteGirl, Tanya, a writer-turned-manipulator! She has been in our community for about a month, and she has already contributed a great deal through her nicely-developing artistry and inspiring sense of creativity. Here are some of her lovely works for you to admire:
Why not drop by her gallery, leave a comment or two, and welcome her to our community? We've all been new at one point or another, and it's nice to make new friends.
