Over the past few months, we've been diligently working on cleaning up the category tree of old and unused categories. While most of this will go unnoticed by the community, what you will notice is the change from "Miscellaneous" galleries to "Other". The reason for this change is simple. The concept of Miscellaneous leads one to believe that it's a junk drawer category for everything under the sun when the intention was to be an "Other" category for deviations that don't fit well in other sub-categories of the tree. We're also working on u

No! Something as simple as Microsoft Paint, Paint Shop Pro or the Gimp, all of which are free, are all you need to start with pixel art. Well, that and a mouse/touchpad (and a computer ). Photoshop can be used to pixel as well, but it is costly, so unless you plan to use Photoshop for a multitude of digital media, it isn't the best investment for pixel art.
Free downloads of MS Paint and Paint Shop Pro can be found here: http://www.bunnystick.com/tdlc.html

PE - Furcadia Ports and Stamps: CategorizationSometimes the category system here on dA can get a little confusing. For example; you created a piece using pixeling techniques but you intend to use it as an icon. Where do you categorize it? A lot of people just are not sure. So this article should help to clear it up.PE - Furcadia Ports and Stamps: Categorization in Personal More Like This
When it comes to categorization, intended use can be a huge factor. In this case, Furcadia portraits would belong in the Icons and Handhelds gallery instead of Pixel Art or Anthro, because while it may have been created pixel by pixel and the subject is anthro, it was created for use as a portrait (often shortened to port), with specific size parameters and place of display kept in mind. By putting them in Icons, ports are easy to find and media doesn't separate them; some ports are not done in a pixel by pixel manner but as they are similar in theme and intended use, they should be seen in the same area. As this is not the first time this has been discussed, I feel the need to

I want to state now that these are preferences, not hard fast rules and every CV has their own. The only hard fast rules are that resources must be credited and no one can receive more than one DD within 6 months.
Have you ever wondered why some CVs include fave or DD limits in their DD suggestion guidelines? Why some of us will give a 6th DD or DD a piece with 10 000 faves and others will not? Here are some reasons why.
Why won't you DD an artist that already has 5 DDs?

I read a very interesting article this week debating Photography Vs Literature and which one of the two tells us more. Of course there is always the element that a picture could be accompanied by words but neither aspect is enough to tell a whole story. But as the article says, Photography has become a universal constant in the world today and is accessible to nearly everybody. Yet many still believe that only pure narration can truly tell a story. What are your thoughts? As Photographers we can choose to limit what we tell or show with a photograph, we can even mislead. Can we convey more with words? Or more with an image? You could describe a person with words but never truly give an accurate picture of who they are visually without a photograph...

In this article we are going to talk to the amazing LisaToms and probe her mind to see what drives her to make such amazing things!
Hello! Have you always been a crafty person? Or has this passion taken you later on in life?
Hello! I can assure I've always loved crafts. I think it's because I've always loved toys ( or in general three-dimensional figures) and when I was a child I was very demanding with my toys. I was never completely satisfied with the quality of mass produced ones so I would have liked to design my own. It's for this reason I entered the world of crafts. I started sewing little simple plushies and sculpting little figures out of plasticine, but I hadn't the appropriate materials so I couldn't made anything seriously. This was a bit frustrating so I left it for a while.
I returned to this passion last year, when I

I'm Jennifer (Graveart). I primarily work with polymer clay and faux fur (and other fabrics) to create OOAK dolls, plushies, and sculptures.
How did you get into it and how long have you been doing it?
I was bored one day and decided to try out sculpting with some Fimo I had picked up. I have been doing it for a almost two years now (as of August).
What difficulties have you found as you progress?
Sometimes your materials don't do what you expect or sometimes you just can't get your art to look exactly as you wanted it to. (Limitations of not having artistic schooling, I presume.)

There are standard "pose requests" that are NOT requested for the "artist" to work from. They are simply asking you to take photos of yourself in provocative poses so they can get off to your stock.
Firstly - please keep in mind that the images you are providing to artists are STOCK ART - they are first and foremost designed to provide artists with useable, useful references, either for traditional art, or digital art or whatever media they choose to create

Undiscovered (Beta): Unearthing Quality ArtArt Under The RadarUndiscovered (Beta): Unearthing Quality Art in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
Each day, hundreds of thousands of pieces of art are submitted to deviantART. As more and more artists join, create, and share their work, it becomes easy for high quality art to miss its chance to stand out and be seen.
Our new browse mode, Undiscovered, aims to bring new, high quality artwork to the foreground.
Finding Hidden Gems
Undiscovered focuses on recently submitted artwork that has not yet drawn attention or recognition at the levels of Popular or What's Hot browse modes. Using an algorithm that identifies patterns in community behavior when curating content, Undiscovered generates a browsing experience that draws attention to creative art and talented artists that may not receive the same level of attention from other browse modes.
Please keep in mind that the algorithm that powers Undiscovered is still new and we may make changes as it grows in use.

Because Undiscovered focuses on recently submitted artwork, the artwork displayed m

If you'd like to be the first to try out new features like this one, upgrade to a Premium Membership and enable Beta Testing in your Account Settings.Prints Integration on Deviation Pages in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
Today we're bringing you an easier way to purchase art on deviantART! When viewing a deviation that is enabled as a Print, you'll be met with a sleek new menu that is designed to be simple and straightforward.
We've moved the Prints functionality from its own separate page and placed it within the deviation page, to help artists sell more of their work, and to reduce friction for buyers looking to purchase art they love.

One of the most common requests from the community has been to update deviantART's mobile site. By popular demand, we just launched a brand new version of the mobile site to Beta Testers! The site is officially supported in mobile browsers on the iPhone and Android phones and tablets.
For a very long time, we've been running two versions of the deviantART website: the desktop version, and the mobile version—and the latter has fallen behind.
As we all know, the previous mobile site was missing a lot of major features. Instead of developing two separate versions of the site—a desktop version and a mobile version—we've formatted the desktop site to fit into a mobile browser. This allows the mobile sit

Beta Launch: Film, deviantART muro in Sta.shHello everyone!Beta Launch: Film, deviantART muro in Sta.sh in DeviantART Announcements More Like This
Today we're bringing you some major changes for Film & Animation deviations, and also some new tools for deviantART muro and Sta.sh Writer!
Film submission through Sta.sh
The first major change for Film is that Sta.sh is now properly equipped to support film submissions! While it was sort of possible in the past, Sta.sh can now store and submit film files the same way other filetypes can be stored and submitted.
Keep in mind that you have to have film submission privileges in order to submit films to deviantART. For more information on this, please read this FAQ: :faq842:
Film Deviation Page Changes
The second change is regarding the layout of film deviations. The old film layout was designed with an older version of deviantART in mind, and this change places Film submissions back up to speed with the rest of the site. The Film deviation page has been updated to

Many people would like to make use of the Premium Membership features of dA, but of course not everyone is able to reserve some bucks for this, or to use them online. Thankfully, deviantART has a wonderful community where many people are willing to help each other out. One way to get a Premium Membership eventhough you cannot pay, is to participate in contests where you can win premium memberships, or points to pay for them - this list will hopefully help you find some to enter.
(Note that in this journal I will include contests with chosen winners only. There are also 'contests' around where the winners are in some way randomly assigned - perhaps you

Forum Features - DifferenceOnce again, the CV team is here featuring the works of dA's beloved forumers!Forum Features - Difference in Deviant Events More Like This
Once per month we'll select one active user in the forum and we'll feature his or her gallery. This is someone we believe represents the forums well with both good forum-abilities and art.
As we're kind (and awesome), we also decided to give an opportunity to everybody to get featured! Every month, we'll create a thread in the Deviation Thumbshare Forum with a different theme. This thread will be made into a sticky for easy access. All you have to do is post thumbs from your gallery matching the theme and, at the end of the month, we'll select our favorite thumbs from that thread and feature them in the next news article
The best thing is that the only requirement is that you're an active member of the forums!
