Hi guys! This is a new set of 12 artworks I did for the new Star Wars Essential Reader's Companion. Although the dateline for this book was a lot tighter it nevertheless was an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

As with the last book I will be posting them in the order of sequence as it appears in the Reader's Companion. Enjoy!

This was another piece that was done purely for the fans. It's from Force Heretic of the New Jedi Order series and it shows the Jedi Expedition led by Grand Master Luke Skywalker exchanging cordial gestures with former enemy and renown Imperial ace pilot, Baron Soontir Fel. He's one of my favorite EU characters mostly because he's an upstanding Imp and the Empire's equivalent of Alliance ace, Wedge Antilles, whom I love.

Fel here is part of the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force but was also formerly a commanding officer in Thrawn's Empire of the Hand before its dissolution....or absorption by the Chiss Ascendancy. The Jedis are on the Chiss homeworld of Csilla and they are on an expedition in search of the mysterious sentient planet, Zonama Sekot, which they believe is the key to defeating the Yuuzhan Vong.

This is the final showdown scene, found in The Unifying Force, between Jedi Grand Master Skywalker, the Solo twins and the Supreme Overlord of the Yuuzhan Vong, Shimrra along with his retinue of Slayer bodyguards. Skywalker's strike team is part of a larger campaign Galactic Alliance is fighting in an attempt to retake Coruscant and end the Yuuzhan Vong threat once and for all.

I read the excerpt for this scene and it just thrills me to see how powerful and badass Luke is as a Jedi Master. I would absolutely love to see this as a movie but alas I can only dream

A scene from the ever popular Thrawn Trilogy. I believe this is from the 1st book, Heir To The Empire. Chewie and Ralrra take Leia to safety after an attempted assassination on her life by Noghri commandos sent by Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Trying to depict wookiees climbing and hanging from giant tree branches was really tricky but I think I managed to pull it off. Turned out better than expected.

Now that Galaxies is officially defunct, I thought it safe to post some of my favourite illustrations here for posterity sake..!

Working on this franchise for close to 2 years really helped me grow as a creative and allowed me to explore many aspects of the craft-- its not often you get to play the role of illustrator, story-teller and designer within a single commission. It was truly rewarding in hindsight and more often that not, a very humbling experience when you witness the sheer quality and passion of other fellow creatives working on the same project, really inspires you to stretch yourself beyond the usual bounds!

Hard to see where you're going in a firefight with those blinders for a visor... ;) Still love scout troopers all the same.

I always try to nab the trooper cards before anyone else. :) I recall being very taken by the bleached and cross-processed art direction of Black Hawk Down and had to do a few cards in a similar feel. What better than with one involving rappelling special forces stormies..

Snowtrooper Captain leading a charge. I was really inspired by alot of Japanese model kit box art when I did this, and I was hoping to bring some of that 'no-nonsense photojournalistic' look to this image. Like as though you were there in the trench next to them.

As always, my favourite characters to paint are the incidental ones in the background.. I always think they end up having the most natural poise and story. I also homaged a bit of Jin Roh in the way he held his MG34- i mean Blaster... by the bipod.

Also, now that I'm looking at it again after so long.. those explosions do seem a bit huge. Maybe the rebels are packing some serious heat. Whatever.

PS:
Done for Sony Online Entertainment's Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game.

This is card art done for the Sony Star Wars TCG.

I guess the tip of the day here is "always looks up and behind you". Some would say very specific advice, but useful never the less.

This is a Sith concept character of my own devising. My goal sitting down to make this was to make a sith lord that was visually interesting, like they used to be; long long ago with an art team far, far away. I'm absolutely SICK of seeing the same visual concept rehashed over and over again to make Sith. So I tried to not use the standard 'red and black w/ tattoos and tribal designs' formula that has been beaten into our brains.

Sorry for the nerd rage there.

He's an anzati, a race used by the clone wars comics a lot. (I also wanted to break from strictly human Sith lords.) If you don't know what they are, you should Wookiepedia it. They're basically the vampires of Star Wars.

Continuing to explore digital painting possibilities. This fellow is a quarren jedi and a mechanic/technician. I imagine not every jedi is a warrior-monk-peacekeeper. Some of them must have other skills and jobs, right? So I made one who is a tech-head first, and a jedi second. I imagine this cranky quarren squatting over a broken droid in the temple basement, trying to quickly fix it so he can move on to the other hundred tasks that require a skilled gear-head. Hey, who else is gonna do it?

Fantasy Flight's Star Wars card game is out!

On the upside, I can now post what remaining art I have from the core set. On the OTHER upside, there are also quite a few more illustrations to come for the expansions, so look for more in the coming months.

If you're interested, there's more where that came from:

One of the first reveals from Fantasy Flight Games' new Star Wars roleplaying game (Edge of the Empire), this is one of the character design/ chapter plates. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what her name is at that point, but if anyone has read it and wants to fill me in go right ahead!

Star Wars was my biggest obsession as a kid, and being able to design characters for the RPG means my life has peaked far too early.
