Hi guys! This is a new set of 12 artworks I did for the new Star Wars Essential Reader's Companion. Although the dateline for this book was a lot tighter it nevertheless was an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

As with the last book I will be posting them in the order of sequence as it appears in the Reader's Companion. Enjoy!

This was another piece that was done purely for the fans. It's from Force Heretic of the New Jedi Order series and it shows the Jedi Expedition led by Grand Master Luke Skywalker exchanging cordial gestures with former enemy and renown Imperial ace pilot, Baron Soontir Fel. He's one of my favorite EU characters mostly because he's an upstanding Imp and the Empire's equivalent of Alliance ace, Wedge Antilles, whom I love.

Fel here is part of the Chiss Expansionary Defense Force but was also formerly a commanding officer in Thrawn's Empire of the Hand before its dissolution....or absorption by the Chiss Ascendancy. The Jedis are on the Chiss homeworld of Csilla and they are on an expedition in search of the mysterious sentient planet, Zonama Sekot, which they believe is the key to defeating the Yuuzhan Vong.

This is the final showdown scene, found in The Unifying Force, between Jedi Grand Master Skywalker, the Solo twins and the Supreme Overlord of the Yuuzhan Vong, Shimrra along with his retinue of Slayer bodyguards. Skywalker's strike team is part of a larger campaign Galactic Alliance is fighting in an attempt to retake Coruscant and end the Yuuzhan Vong threat once and for all.

I read the excerpt for this scene and it just thrills me to see how powerful and badass Luke is as a Jedi Master. I would absolutely love to see this as a movie but alas I can only dream

This scene is found in a short story by Timothy Zahn called Mist Encounter and its one of my favorite fan pieces. Here Captain Voss Parck of the Victory Class Star Destroyer, Strikefast, and Colonel Barris meets Mitth'raw'nuruodo (Thrawn) for the first time. Following this event Thrawn joins the Empire and eventually becomes the Grand Admiral we all know and love, and also founder of the Empire of the Hand.

If you look closer you'll also notice that the clone troopers are wearing hybrid, transitional armor, a combination of phase II and the new stormtrooper armor.

Fantasy Flight's Star Wars card game is out!

On the upside, I can now post what remaining art I have from the core set. On the OTHER upside, there are also quite a few more illustrations to come for the expansions, so look for more in the coming months.

If you're interested, there's more where that came from:

Another piece for the Star Wars LCG. This is actually my most recent one, just spoilered on FFG's website.

One very interesting facet of painting Star Wars game art is that we get to paint scenes that were never filmed or that were filmed differently, sort of an extra 'Director's cut'.

Another piece painted for the Star Wars LCG by Fantasy Flight Games.
I am told this one had a brief appearance as the titular 'Luke Skywalker' card during the first GenCon playtesting.

Here is another painting I did for the Star Wars Essential Reader's Companion.

-------------
This was a very fun job... But quite a challenge as well. I had 2 months to do 39 illustrations for this book.

While speed is a strength that normally lands me a lot of my work, I still want to do as best as I can. It can become quite a challenge. I pushed VERY hard on this assignment to do my absolute best-- even having to work it around my regular freelance work. But I pulled it off... And I am happy with the way it came out.

I think the thing that has been most fun about working on FFG's upcoming Star Wars card game is that I get to envision scenes from the movies from angles that the camera never picked up. Sort of makes the whole classic Star Wars experience fresh again!

Now that Galaxies is officially defunct, I thought it safe to post some of my favourite illustrations here for posterity sake..!

Working on this franchise for close to 2 years really helped me grow as a creative and allowed me to explore many aspects of the craft-- its not often you get to play the role of illustrator, story-teller and designer within a single commission. It was truly rewarding in hindsight and more often that not, a very humbling experience when you witness the sheer quality and passion of other fellow creatives working on the same project, really inspires you to stretch yourself beyond the usual bounds!

Hard to see where you're going in a firefight with those blinders for a visor... ;) Still love scout troopers all the same.

I was asked to edit out the body parts in the background.. ;) (Note the unofficial indirect-fire wrist rockets being deployed)

I always try to nab the trooper cards before anyone else. :) I recall being very taken by the bleached and cross-processed art direction of Black Hawk Down and had to do a few cards in a similar feel. What better than with one involving rappelling special forces stormies..

Most of my portfolio of Star Wars art features the popular characters like Darth Vader, Boba Fett and Stormtroopers, but I wanted to show that I can also draw the less well-known alien characters. And I thought where better to start than with one of Jabba the Hutt's Gamorrean Guards, aka 'Pig Guards'!

When Return of the Jedi came out in 1983, Dungeons and Dragons was very popular and I think they tapped into that 'swords and sorcery' look with these characters. In the movie, the Gamorrean Guards are brought to life by actors wearing 'fat suits' which must have limited their maneuverability - so I've tried to make my depiction look a little more dynamic and menacing.

This is a compressed version of the original that was drawn in Photoshop using a Wacom pad. Star Wars and its characters are copyright of Disney - this is fan art and isn't for sale or reproduction.

I've already posted other drawings of Darth Vader, but he's a popular character - and I like drawing him - so I thought it was time to do another!

I'd also been wanting to draw some TIE Fighter Pilots and thought up an idea so that I could include them with Vader in the same piece...

If you've seen the original Star Wars movie - you might remember the scene where Vader gets a couple of pilots to follow him into battle against the rebels. I couldn't help think that they took it a little too leisurely as they marched off round the corner like they were heading straight to the fridge for a snack. What they needed was a red flashing emergency light to generate some urgency! So here they are - red light on - and whadya know - they're all running to their ships now!

In reality I just made that up because I wanted to draw the characters in a dynamic pose - and with some red highlights (which always looks good against black). But I hope my little backstory helps sell the idea!

This is an original depiction of George Lucas's characters - drawn in Photoshop using a Wacom pad. I might put up a work-in-progress of this if anyone's interested because I took a couple of screenshots at various stages. You might also find it interesting that I used Google Sketchup to create a 3D model of the background to ensure that the perspective is right (after having sketched it out freehand first). This is a reduced resolution version of the original which is 600dpi.

Hope you like.

I wanted to draw the Emperor's Royal Guard (aka Imperial Guard aka Red Guard) - but I didn't just want to have them standing motionless like they do in the movies. So I've put them in battle with Yoda as my take on the scene in Revenge of the Sith when Yoda confronts the Emperor.

In the movie Yoda uses the Force and dispenses with the guards with a simple shrug... but here's what it might have looked like if he'd had to work just a little harder to deal with them.

This is an entirely original depiction of George Lucas's characters. I drew this in Photoshop using a Wacom pad. This is an optimized version of the original - which is 600dpi.

Hope you like!

I produced one card for the expansion to the Star Wars: The Card Game, Edge of Darkness. This was actually my second card produced the the Star Wars card game and originally created in late 2011... it is FINALLY out after the card game got an overhaul during production. I was assigned to illustrate an Rebel alien with a hidden gun stash. I got to pick the alien, so I of course picked a Mon Calamari! RAWR!
