Over the past few months, we've been diligently working on cleaning up the category tree of old and unused categories. While most of this will go unnoticed by the community, what you will notice is the change from "Miscellaneous" galleries to "Other". The reason for this change is simple. The concept of Miscellaneous leads one to believe that it's a junk drawer category for everything under the sun when the intention was to be an "Other" category for deviations that don't fit well in other sub-categories of the tree. We're also working on u

Addressing Quality of Deviations

There is a lot of this going around "Daily Deviations are losing quality. They're not as beautimous as they used to be.". How about we step out of the shoes of "what is and isn't art" for just a s

Digital Art vs Traditional ArtFollowing the article I wrote for ArtHistoryProject Digital Art - Why it's such a popular medium I wanted to bring to you another topic for discussion. It has been a prevailing topic for a while now around the internet and amongst community members in respects to Digital Art and Traditional Art.Digital Art vs Traditional Art in Art Features More Like This
Digital Art: is a general term for a range of artistic works and practices that use digital technology as an essential part of the creative and/or presentation process.
Traditional Art: refers to fine arts that use the old methods for creating artwork, such as pens, brushes, clay and other tools. Although traditional arts has different techniques than digital arts, but in fact, the different forms of art are all related to each other by the same concept, which also involves digital arts.

Stepping out of the real world and into your imagination is an experience that is both shared and held close to all of us. Most of us here express it in our own way in respects to art and the art form. As time moves forward technology progresses on, that type of expression is finding new means and mediums to be painted upon.
Digital art has exploded with the modern age and with it brilliant and fantastic artists have emerged from its rupture. So why is Digital Art so popular.

What makes Digital Art so appealing that most would give up traditional art to move onto something more accessible. Is it money? Is it the potential to further your own artistic ventures? Some say all and others none of the above. It's all personal preference but I am sure we can all observe how popular Digital Art has become. Not just for the artists down the street but as

Celtic Art - A Look In History
Written by KovoWolf for projecteducate
There is something so unique and so humbling about Celtic art that we can immediately recognize it when we see it, though it is difficult to truly describe as a single 'medium'. With intricate designs, swirls, and beautiful knotwork however Celtic art is also a medium that you can recognize when you see it. Because Celtic art covers a huge expanse of time, geography and throughout various cultures, it can present some difficulty when trying to term or define what Celtic art truly is.
Celtic art and culture date back as far as the 8th century B.C generally refers to the culture of the European Iron Age from around 1000 BC onwards, until the conquest by the Roman Empire. The Early Medieval art of Britain and Ireland, which produced the Book Of Kells and other masterpieces that are well known today and can be associated with "ce

What better way to kick off Digital art then gearing up with some features from that gallery!Art History - Digital Art - Features in Art Features More Like This
There is something truly inspiring, so liberating about viewing art from around the world and from various artists. Art brings to us raw, untempered emotions and I am humbled by being able to not only share but to embrace such a fine medium of art! The Digital Age has truly revolutionized art as a digital medium in itself. It has opened countless doors to many and continues to go above and beyond its limits daily.
So without further ado, I bring to you some features from the Digital Art gallery! I hope you enjoy!

Welcome to the latest "dark" photomanipulation contest, supported by Community Relations here on deviantART. This contest will challenge you to think outside of the box, for you will have to not only create something, but you will need to do a bit of research and think about why you are creating it. Are you ready for a competition that is out of this world?
Before we go any further, let me clarify that PLUTO COUNTS!
What do I have to do?
Choose one of the planets (or Pluto) in our solar system, listed below. Moons or suns can be a part of the larger picture, but they do not count as your god/goddess.
Your job is to create a PHOTOMANIPULATION in which you show a myth around a planetary ruler (that is, the god or goddess after which the planets were named).
The gods/goddesses can be Greek, Roman, or other.... but they must be planetary rulers.

Perhaps because there are so many different ways of conceptualizing DDs, there are also many myths and misconceptions. I would like to address some of those myths by responding to the ones most frequently heard. Please note that these opinions are mine and reflect my experiences with the photomanipulation community, but perhaps they will be informative nevertheless.
Myth 1: DDs should always be perfect.
To many of us, the ideal Daily Deviation goes to an artist with amazing talent whose work draws you in and makes you think, "Wow, everyone needs to see this!" A DD should move you, inspire you, and provoke you to think, b

We will demonstrate our skills and our creativity. You will be hearing from the community in their own voices what it means to be a photomanipulator here on dA.
Let's get started!
What is photomanipulation?
The official definition of "photomanipulation" (PM), according to deviantART, is: an image that is composed of two or more photographic elements to create something new. This definition has been very nicely analyzed and distinguished from other genres here, here, and here, but let's talk briefly about the three main components o

Photomanipulation Week here at projecteducate has been phenomenal, and that is entirely thanks to you, our viewers, and to the community members who made it happen. Our community wrote most of the articles; I just posted them. Our community interviewed many, many people and answered what had to have seemed like endless questions about how they do their stuff. And do you know, of the many people I asked, only one or two were unable? People contributed in spite of busy schedules, poor health conditions, other projects, and other competing demands because they knew this was important. I cannot thank you enough.
I wanted to show you the sheer number of people (well over 40) who participated in this event. Every one of these people made a significant contribution. Please, everyone show some love to the deviants who made this week possible (and then keep reading; more good stuff coming below this list):

Current dA submissions guidelines define "Fantasy Photomanipulation" as photomanipulation that focuses on a fantasy theme. We have therefore set out to speak with our fantasy constituency and gain a better understanding of how they see and define the complexities of fantasy photomanipulation.
We all know of dragons, wizards, sorcerers, witches, griffins, magic, fairies, fauns, and all other mystical and magical beings. We learned of them through stories, art, movies, and games. The fantasy genre has become increasingly popular because of movies like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and games like "Dungeons & Dragons" and "World of Warcraft," not to forget fantasy wr

Hello! Have you always been a crafty person? Or has this passion taken you later on in life?
Hello! I can assure I've always loved crafts. I think it's because I've always loved toys ( or in general three-dimensional figures) and when I was a child I was very demanding with my toys. I was never completely satisfied with the quality of mass produced ones so I would have liked to design my own. It's for this reason I entered the world of crafts. I started sewing little simple plushies and sculpting little figures out of plasticine, but I hadn't the appropriate materials so I couldn't made anything seriously. This was a bit frustrating so I left it for a while.
I returned to this passion last year, when I

There are standard "pose requests" that are NOT requested for the "artist" to work from. They are simply asking you to take photos of yourself in provocative poses so they can get off to your stock.
Firstly - please keep in mind that the images you are providing to artists are STOCK ART - they are first and foremost designed to provide artists with useable, useful references, either for traditional art, or digital art or whatever media they choose to create

My tenure as Community Volunteer of Fan Fiction ends tomorrow, and I want to go out with a bang. So here's one more competition with prizes so you'll all remember me fondly!
A writer's best friend is another writer. Sometimes you just cannot objectively look over your own work and fix all your mistakes. You need a fresh pair of eyes to help you, and who better than someone else who understands the labors of love you're undertaking? That is where editors come in. But for many people, finding a literary helpmate can be difficult.
What's this about?
This is a two-part contest for writers of fan fiction. Phase One: Write a fan fiction but don't bother to proofread it. Post it in its raw, unedited first draft (just make sure it's still legible--correct your typos, at the ve

It's been quiet lately. Too quiet. And I don't mean in the "something awful's bound to happen" kind of way, I mean in the "where the heck is everybody?" kind of way. We're more than halfway through the month and I haven't set a Daily Deviation since Halloween. No one has sent me any suggestions! And while DDs aren't the be-all end-all, this is indicative of a more deep-rooted problem.
Look, I'm one of you, so I understand the ins and outs of this community. We're not as unified as, say, the general Lit community, for twofold reasons.
First off, we're not even a community so much as a modular collective. We're categorized by our fandoms--general Lit is accessible to all, but nine times out of ten, a fan fic speaks a language that only other fans can understand. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some of my favorite fanfictions are the ones that go hardcore geek.
Secondly, our pastime is not one that gets a lot of respect. Fan fiction has a
Project Educate: Cosplay for a CauseWith Halloween come and gone, many people have had their annual costuming fun and put those costumes away, or returned them to the rental shop, or even donated them to the local thrift store. But for some people, costuming is a year-round celebration of their favorite characters. Long associated with geeks and conventions, costuming has become a hobby unto itself. And for some, it's become a way of life.Project Educate: Cosplay for a Cause in Deviant Events More Like This
Heroes are meant to inspire. Cosplayers are geeks who display who and what they love in the most theatrical ways possible. And sometimes, they do this to pay their inspiration forward. Sometimes, they do this not just to homage, but to inspire and bring their heroes to life. Defeating negative stereotypes and helping the community... that's what being a super hero is all about!
Cosplay-for-charity groups are nonprofit organizations who use their passion to bring attention to various noble causes and have a little fun while doing it. They'll attend comic cons or organize events of their

Stamps are a great way to show your support for a project, a person or a group of people, spread awareness for a cause or promote a contest. It is also valid to do them just for fun, with just a funny image and/or message.
Since their introduction to the deviantArt galleries, millions of stamps have been created with a great variety of messages, both silly and serious, and you can see them all over the place, from journals to profile widgets.
The Community Relations department exists to encourage, facilitate and develop the relationship with our deviantART community. Our goal is to nurture our community by encouraging, stimulating artists to create, collaborate, and participate in a friendly, safe, and supportive artistic environment.

DDs: To select or not to selectHey wazaaaaaap!DDs: To select or not to select in Art Features More Like This
In my last journal I talked about my stance on Daily Deviations. In this occasion I'll tell you some of the reasons that make me choose some artworks, and the reasons that make me not choose others. Hopefully it will be interesting for some, useful for others or simply a good reading if you're really boring.
What makes me choose a deviation to be featured?
Such a simple question with such an indefinite answer, and I apologize in advance for giving such a vague response but I'll put it simple: Sometimes not even I know!
There's not a secret formula I have to determine if a piece is going to be featured or not, sometimes I really have a hard time making a decision and it really is a case-by-case situation. The deviation needs to STAND OUT, be different, have that "wow" factor. Unfortunately this is very difficult to explain. However ther

It is said that the last thing you lose is h0pe right? Well this isn't the case, because h0pe is not lost and actually, h0pe is here, doing his most cute duck face ever. What can be better than h0pe doing a duck face? H0pe doing a duck face while being interviewed of course!
So girls, boys, ducks, and every combination between those, today we interview:
Hello Bradley. How are you today?
Everytime I see your icon feel like I'm talking to Gaga. Have you ever mistaken a person with another and had an awkward situation from that?
Yes, all the time.
My father is bald, and if you know bald people, you'd know that they all look semi-identical from the back. Anyway, we were at a shopping centre and I got lost - so I wandere
DDs: Suggester's frustrationsWelcome to a new journal in this mini series about Daily Deviations. In the first one I let you know about what I think DDs represent, and then about some of my personal criteria to select them.DDs: Suggester's frustrations in Art Features More Like This
Now is time to focus on the suggesters. Those amazing (almost always human) beings who take a moment of their lives to go the extra mile when finding an amazing deviation and suggest it for consideration as a Daily Deviation. Ya know? I wouldn't be able to feature so many amazing art on my own! So before anything else, I want to take a moment to thank all the amazing people who suggest. Thank you guys!
As a person who also suggests DDs once in a while, I do understand the frustration suggesters often get. So I would like in this occasion to explain some of the reasons why th

It's not required from me to say hi but I'll say it anyways: Hi! And welcome to a new edition of Absurd Interviews: Being absurd before it was too mainstream.
I suddenly remembered I had this interview in my notes for so long, I had to publish it as soon as possible. Why? Because apparently I'm like Dory and I tend to forget... stuff...

However, aside from the cheerful stuffs that i draw and show to the public, to those who know me so much, i am such a moody and deep person. I love to think, i love to be alone sometimes and i
