My Thoughts on Twilight SparkleThroughout my life I've had a fairly difficult relationship with regard to main characters in kid's shows. In my experience they've effectively been boiled down to one of three options. Either their so perfect and so unbelievably good that it's hard to get invested in them as character, so flawed that they cross the line into flat-out unlikeable, or in many cases simply so bland and boring that I have no real connection or interest in them whatsoever. My Thoughts on Twilight Sparkle in Reviews & Guides More Like This
I need you all to understand this history I've had with main characters so you understand how important it is when I say what I'm about to say.
Because in my opinion, Twilight Sparkle is without a doubt, one of the greatest main characters ever put in a kid's show. No, I'm not joking. This is the first time in a very long time that I've come across a main character that's managed to find that very elusive sweet spot in terms of their general characteristics. She's not unrealistically good and wholesome, she has flaws but never so many tha
My Thoughts on FluttershyAnd here my life really is on the line.My Thoughts on Fluttershy in Reviews & Guides More Like This
Yep, it's time to talk about Fluttershy. And I mean what I said, Fluttershy has, over the course of her time in this show, gained such a devoted following that it's become akin to heresy in this fandom to say anything negative about her. In fact so fierce have fans become in their protectiveness of this character that any characters in the show itself who've said or done anything to upset or harm her in any way have instantly become demonized.
Now, as a confession, I myself have participated in such behaviour myself during my time as a member of this fandom, so I understand completely where people are coming from. When we see Fluttershy, observe her mannerisms, her way of speaking, it creates an immediate impact on us. When we look at her we see a shy, sweet, innocent and vulnerable creature who needs protecting. In many ways it's like some sort of parental instinct, at least how I see it. A need to defend those we feel cannot defend themselves.
My Thoughts on Rainbow DashMuch like with Pinkie Pie and Rarity, my opinion on Rainbow Dash, at least during the early episodes, was influenced by my initial exposure to her. When she frist came on screen I gained an opinion of her as being "the token tomboy", which was something which bothered me at first as we already seemed to have a character to fit that role with Applejack. So when Rainbow showed up my first reaction was, "don't we have one of these already?"My Thoughts on Rainbow Dash in Reviews & Guides More Like This
But much like the others my perception of her changed greatly overtime. This was not just a typical tomboy character. There were many aspects of her that broke out of that mould. Though unlike the others, the degree to which she broke out of her stereotype seemed less obvious.
Not only that, but much like Rarity and Pinkie Pie, I didn't really like her that much when I first started watching the show. However, unlike those other two, and I know this is going to earn me many MANY haters, I haven't grown to like Rainbow as much as I have with the others.
My Thoughts on ApplejackLet me get something out of the way right now. I liked Applejack when I first saw her in the first episode. This is something that needs to me made very clear because, under normal circumstances, I'm not a particular big fan of stereotype characters. When I say that Applejack is a stereotype, what I mean is that she very much seemed to embody many of the traits that people have of those in the Southern United States. The accent, the farm, the big family, the hat. If it wasn't for Applejack's more redeeming qualities I'd have probably dismissed her.My Thoughts on Applejack in Reviews & Guides More Like This
But like I said, Applejack has redeeming qualities to her. Many in fact that, like with Fluttershy, far outweigh any of the negative things I'm about to say about her in this essay.
First, let me talk about some of her good points. Being a person who works frequently in a farm environment, she is, naturally, a very hard worker. I've always had an appreciation for the kinds of people who do this kind of work, especially when they put so much
My Thoughts on the Cutie Mark CrusadersI have written a fair deal about these characters whenever I did reviews on episodes that focused on them. Remembering what I wrote about them I find it easy to assume that many will come away from those reviews with the distinct impression that I do not like these characters at all. This is, in fact, a false assumption. I do not dislike or hate the Cutie Mark Crusaders. However, that does not mean that I do not occasionally find things about their characters that bother, because I do. But much like Spike, they've never done anything to make me dread their appearances. My Thoughts on the Cutie Mark Crusaders in Reviews & Guides More Like This
Which is already a point in their favour I can tell you. Typically, whenever I've been introduced to kid characters in cartoons, especially very young kid characters, they've been incredibly difficult for me to like. So many times in other shows it seems like they've been designed with the express purpose of being "annoying for the sake of it". So at the very least I can say that the CMC have never made me feel this way
My Thoughts on Celestia and LunaAnd so we come to the two regal sisters themselves. Celestia and Luna, the Princesses of My Little Pony. Despite not being in the show so much, the little that these two characters have done is so big, both on and off screen, that I've come up with tons to write about, for better or for worse. My Thoughts on Celestia and Luna in Reviews & Guides More Like This
Let me start by addressing a particular complaint I came across when I first started watching the show. That issue is the fact that they're both Princesses in a land where no other form of royalty seems to exist. It was argued that because there are no older monarchs above them, like a king or something, that they should be called Queens instead of Princesses.
Well firstly, let me say right now that it is not unusual or unheard of for countries to be ruled by princes and princesses rather than kings or queens. These types of nations are known as principalities and while I'm not familiar with any such nations that exist at the moment, I do know that they were at one point fairly common in Europe,
Mi'Amore's LessonThe doors were tall. Taller than any doors she had ever seen before. They were inscribed on either side with gold-trimmed markings. On the left a mark of a pegasi. And on the right, a unicorn. But even the sheer size of that door was nothing compared to the building it was attached to. The royal palace of Canterlot. She'd always seen it from afar, but never this close. Given recent events, it was clear she'd be seeing a lot more of it in future.Mi'Amore's Lesson in Short Stories More Like This
Mi'Amore Cadenza her parents had named her. Cadence as she preferred to be called. A young filly, a child. Her hair tied back into a ponytail. A filly who had no idea how much her life was about to change.
It had been merely a day since the letter had arrived from the palace. She'd only reached schooling age but rather than having arrangements made to attend some local school, that letter had arrived instead. Her family had read it several times over, with looks of both pride and concern on their faces. They'd explained to her what it meant, th
Hearts and Hooves Day - Missing SceneThe sun was shining brightly today. The sky was a clear blue and everywhere you went in the parks of Canterlot, ponies were smiling and laughing.Hearts and Hooves Day - Missing Scene in Short Stories More Like This
But then, they had good reason to be happy. For this was hearts and Hooves day. And on this day, like it was every year, love was in the air. Mares and stallions alike spent the day with their "very special someponies". You could not go two steps forward without laying your eyes on some happy couple enjoying each others company.
But sitting on a grassy hill in the middle of the park, was one pony who did not have a smile upon his face. A white stallion with a blue mane, wearing a rather ornate red uniform of a captain, who sat there on the top of the hill, and was experiencing worry like never before.
Over the course of his time as a member of the royal guard, he had been against many things that might cause other ponies to quake with fear. He had faced down raiding parties of dogs without hesitation. He's fended off hydras and manticores. He

Princess Mi'Amore Cadenza, or Cadence as she preferred to be called, was watching the gathering crowd with great anticipation. Like many of the annual Canterlot events, ponies from all over Equestria would gather to this city. And although her work often took other all over the principality to meet such ponies, seeing them all gather together in one place was always a rare treat.
This day was the annual dessert contest and many had pulled out all the stops this year. Treats and cakes of all shapes and sizes lined the gardens, waiting for the judges to come by and pass their verdict. She had to admit, it was an appealing sight.
Under normal circumstances she would have loved for Shining to be here today so they could both enjoy it. Unfortunately for the both of them he'd bee
A Canterlot Wedding - Missing ScenesThe ponies were all hard at work. The recent attack brought about by the unexpected and hitherto unknown changelings and their Queen, Chrysalis, had left much of the city damaged. By some miracle there had been no casualties, only a few injuries here and there. Of course it made sense. The changelings were, after all, using the ponies as a food source. It made no sense that they'd want them harmed.
Ponies all about the capital were grateful that the attack had left only structural damage. Damage which was easily rectified. But for one lone unicorns, the damage was far deeper.
