The Capture vs. The Pose
portrait of a WW2 vet...
When a subject poses to have his or her photograph taken, the subject tries to project a message about himself or
herself by how he or she “poses”, by the attitude of his or her body language or facial expression.
If the subject is posed by the photographer, the body pulled and prodded into the desired angles,
the facial expression “directed”, it is the photographer who is intending to communicate a message.
In either case, posing or posed, there is undeniably something “false” in the representation.

Power & Grace In Motion
Above and beyond that, a unique aesthetic beauty unmatched by any other living creature in creation. There is the reality of the horse and there is the idea of the horse. Combined in a single construct, a special art has existed to celebrate the horse since the first human artists used the stone walls of their cave dwellings as the first canvases. Watching Werner Herzog’s 2010 documentary on the Chauvet Caves in southern France, Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010), gives one a sense of the powerful bond of human and horse, of the capture of early humanit

Why Cynical Improvement Is Bad For YouSince we're on the subject of taboos, I feel it necessary to talk about this one. This one pisses me off and it's very much a cornerstone to a bigger issue with our artistic community: The idea and assumption that as an artist you MUST improve at all times. 24/7. No exceptions. Every work you produce must be 10x better than your last. You must constantly strive for perfection. To ignore this "truth" is to commit the terrible sin of rejecting the very concept of improvement, and you will never break out of your "comfort zone."Why Cynical Improvement Is Bad For You in Personal More Like This
I'm here to tell you that this is hogwash.
You should strive to improve. Never say that I don't encourage improvement. It's why you go to school, why you go to college, and why after college you continue to work on your art. You always want to be better. The problem is that far too many people have a strictly binary concept of what "better" is and on how to "improve."
First off, there is no pinnacle of perfection. There is no
Keep Calm and Carry OnTony DiTerlizzi once told me that to become successful you just need to keep working. Even if it seems like nothing is coming from your hard work, you just need to keep doing it anyway. If you're persistent and keep at it long enough, eventually people will notice you and you will get somewhere. It's advice that resonated with me quite powerfully, and since college I've always taken the attitude of just doing what I love, with the faith that it will eventually pay off. I've had my ups and downs over the years, but in many respects his advice has been true. The following are examples of things I am grateful for, that would never have happened had I ever given up. This is not a complete list, or in any specific order. It's just a few highlights of special things that have happened to me that I will always remember fondly.Keep Calm and Carry On in Personal More Like This

Submitting A Commission Request
First submit a request via e-mail to email@example.com detailing what you want in a commission (don't use DA notes, please). If necessary, provide images or links for specific characters or things I might need to know. The more information you can provide, the better the commission will come out. If I don't have enough information, I'll try to fill in the blanks myself and this can occasionally result in your commission being less personal.
Also, please be upfront about what you want. Don't send me an e-mail asking if I'd take your commission without any information as to what the commission will be. I won't say yes or no until I know what I'm in for so please just be direct. It makes things so much easier.
If I agree to the commission, I will contact you and ask for payment via Paypal. Once payment is received I will begin work immediately. It may take a cou

The Truth in PhotographyAs you might know, one of the biggest controversies of the moment is the outcome of the Contest Pictures of The Year International. The Truth in Photography in Art Features More Like This
This photo, from Chip Litherland, was the winner.
The controversy? The process by which the image was obtained: a cellular phone.
And, of course, without the natural colors but with the treatment we learned to recognize: Hipstamatic.
Without taking sides, and only making some questions, let's see:
Why and how the photo was taken? Because the photographer was there and used the reachable method at the time.
Is it a manipulation? Well, the colors, tones, contrasts are not natural.
The reality is there, depicted, but the obtained image is just an interpretation. As usual.
But doesn't your camera interpret the reality in a different way from mine? Even with the same camera and model, in the same place, it's possible to interpret the reality in a different way: all we have to do is tweak pre-set modes. Is this not true

I) The Intellectual : Everything in a shot is about lines, metaphors, psychology, sociology, history or you name it. No element in his pictures is ever the result of hazard since his swift eyes detected and interpreted every single detail before he triggered. Even the lousiest shot becomes the next Michelangelo after going through his everlasting rhetoric. Yet, most often, he is actually the only one to understand, and like his pictures.
II) The English Patient : Patience is his main virtue. A shot is as good as the time and effort it took to get it. He identifies carefully a setting, studies the light
The Birth of PhotographySince the late Renaissance that artists and inventors had been looking for a mechanical method of capturing visual scenes. Previously, using the camera obscura, artists would manually trace what they saw, but this was used in drawing, study and entertainment, not commercial purposes. The Birth of Photography in Personal More Like This
The first commercially photographic process with sucess was the Daguerréotype, in wich the obtained image was (is) a direct positive made in the camera on a silvered copper plate.
The surface of a daguerreotype is like a mirror, with the image made directly on the silvered surface. It is very fragile and can be rubbed off with a finger, and the finished plate has to be angled so as to reflect some dark surface in order to view the image properly. Depending on the angle viewed, and the color of the surface reflected into it, the image can change from a positive to a negative.
The exposure in the camera was too long to conveniently take portraits, and the first subjects taken were street scen
