Medium - Tilt-shift effect on Photoshop.Hello, I'm back with tutorials, and for the first time it's about edition on Photoshop. The objective will be making a miniature looking picture (tilt-shift). I'd say the perfect photos for this effect are those taken from heights, like on top of a building or on top of a mountain or something similar. Nevertheless, you can experiment with other kids of pictures and then tell me or show me the results. I'm always interested on knowing more.Medium - Tilt-shift effect on Photoshop. in Personal More Like This
For this tutorial, I've chosen an archive photo from Paris, taken on top of the Arc de Triomphe, and showing La Défense in the background:
And after some basic edition on Lightroom 3.4 I get this:
I'll explain now how ot get the tilt-shift edition step by step:
1st - We open the picture on Photoshop, and we turn on the "fast mask" by clicking here:
2nd - With pencils at 2500 and strenght at 0%, we paint the area that we want to look unfocused to make the tilt-shift.
3rd - We turn off the fast mask mode, and deselect and invert the selection:
Advanced - Stars' traces around the circumpolar.EDIT: I've created the chatroom #Phototalks (http://chat.deviantart.com/chat/Phototalks) to talk about photography tips, tricks, doubts, and all these things. Also some general talking is allowed. I'll probably be there if you join.Advanced - Stars' traces around the circumpolar. in Personal More Like This
Okay so, this complicates a little bit. Because of the Earth's rotation, when we put a long exposure time all the stars appear moving, excepting one: the Polaris (the circumpolar star), and, in the picture, the traces of the rest of the stars will turn around this Polaris star. The objective, then, will be getting results like these: http://marioguti.deviantart.com/art/Looking-for-the-north-322352741?q=gallery%3Amarioguti%2F33821496&qo=74
You'll need a tripod, a DSLR camera and a remote control or delay trigger.
I'll post the different steps I follow when I make these kinds of pictures:
1 - I find the Polaris (okay, I'm not an astronomer, so my mobile phone does so for me, there are Apps for iPhone and Android
Medium - How to focus at night (hyperfocal)Hello again, and sorry by not posting anything for a long time, I've been a bit busy with University stuff and other projects.Medium - How to focus at night (hyperfocal) in Personal More Like This
I'll talk about how I use the hyperfocal rule, which is very useful, especially shooting in low light conditions, like in the night. You'll need a lantern and a camera. And it'd be great if you had an smartphone, you'll find out why if you continue reading.
The hyperfocal rule serves to calculate at which distance we should focus to make not only the foreground subject appear focused (whatever: a house, a tree, etc), but the background as well (the infinite point focused, so that stars, for example, appear focused too). This distance will depend on many factors: the aperture, the focal lenght, the circle of confusion, etc. But fortunately this won't be a maths class: you can download apps for your smartphone or find on the internet hyperfocal distances for your camera depending on these factors, so that you'll have to calculate nothing. I use an app and I only
Advanced - Catching the stars stood.Well, I've classified this as advanced because it includes some mathematical equation, but it's quite simple. With this you can get results like these: http://marioguti.deviantart.com/art/Exploring-in-the-night-318831781?q=gallery%3Amarioguti%2F33821496&qo=93 http://marioguti.deviantart.com/art/Lights-on-the-other-side-324127837?q=gallery%3Amarioguti%2F33821496&qo=58Advanced - Catching the stars stood. in Personal More Like This
You'll need: a DSLR camera, a tripod, and a remote control (well, or you can set delay trigger, the goal of this is not moving the camera when we push the button)
Okay so, you'll need to set the aperture value to the lowest possible, and a long exposure time but...how long? if it's too short you will get the photo underexposed (dark), and if it's too long the stars will not appear stood, but moving (this is because of the Earth's rotation). How do we calculate the maximum exposure time we can set? Easy!
Exposure time = 500/Focal lenght. For example, for a 24mm focal lenght: ET=500/24=20,83 seconds. This is the max. we can

Pillow FortIf you built a pillow fort, what would be the password?Pillow Fort in Personal More Like This
Oh, don't tell me! It's not for me to know. You can only tell someone really special. Someone you can trust.
Think of the times you built a wall around your heart to keep everyone out. Who is the one person you'll always allow to break down the wall, or let in, or trap inside with you?
That's the person you're supposed to tell the password to your pillow fort to.
Now go and built a pillow fort, and if you don't already know, find out who that special person is and let them know that you will always let them in.

Somebody get me the hell out of this place. Family? How can you sit there and call yourself my mother? I'm terrified of you. I hate you. It makes me feel like a stupid little kid, but I really just want my daddy right now. Dad always make it better. You don't. You're what's wrong. Leave me alone.
Sorry to rant about it here. Ignore me, I don't care. I just needed to let off some steam and I don't feel like I can do it anywhere else.

A Pop Culture Interpretation of The Supernatural
Every culture around the world created gods and other mythical beings by mixing and matching fanged and taloned animal parts—e.g., enormous eagle heads on lions’ bodies—human beings have always seemed to need to believe there are powerful and usually quite vengeful supernatural beings lurking just beyond the candlelight.
Supernatural beings come to serve several purposes:
They kept people on the lighted path of truth and goodness, fearful of exploring beyond;
They were a reminder of the punishment we deser
Alice X. Z. - Living Rainbow Taking FlightThe vibrant digital paintings of alicexz are fiery, emotional, and incredibly memorable. The colors of her creations (mostly portraits of popular TV and Film characters) are unusually vibrant, which is remarkable considering how layered they appear to be. It’s sort of like what manga characters might look like if painted by one of the Dutch Masters. And this artist exhibits just the right amount of quirkiness to leave us wanting to know more: she has a penchant for painting redheads. But, then of course, there’s a lot of red and golden fire burning through most her artworks.Alice X. Z. - Living Rainbow Taking Flight in DeviantART Announcements More Like This

Nuances of an Annual Ritual
Which brings us to each year’s communal celebration of the passing of our lifetimes:
New Year’s Eve
So what did you “actually get done” in the past year? How closer are you to a grand goal in life? An assessment is made and then the inevitable Step 2 of the yearly process is engaged, which is often a word for word repeat of last year’s Step 2:
The New Year’s Resolution
There seem to be two main strategies that emerge at this point of facing the New Year, a “brand new morning.” The lone wolf quietly acknowledges goals not yet reached, and is even more secretive in the “new plan.” “I’ll show them,” becomes the new privat

"The use of filters, how to pick them and examples of situations where they would be helpful...."
Hi moria330, filters are a good way of diversifying your photographic opportunities without spending a great deal of money (though, granted, many of the better quality filters can get to be relatively expensive).
In film photography, filters were used a lot more extensively then they are today thanks to the nature of the medium.
For example colour filters were used for white balance purposes on colour films that were balanced for different light types, so, you could shoot artificial light balanced film under daylight if you had a filter that corrected for it.

"Sandra Kantanen is a photographer based out of Helsinki, Finland who uses a very unique technique to develop her work. Kantanen prints her photographs with similar pigments found in acrylic paints on aluminum plates, then finishing the pieces with varnish. The result is an awesome visual treat turning photography literally into a painting, as she sweeps the wet prints with a brushes to leave visceral brush strokes and paint lines.
Kantanen has exhibited her work internationally from Västerås, Stockholm, Leverkusen, Odense, Oslo, Beijing, and St. Gallen."

Happy New Years!I figured I owed it to you to make myself one of these "New Years" journals. So I did.Happy New Years! in Personal More Like This
Hm, where to start...
This year has been interesting, to say the least. It's hard to remember what happened before summer started. Well, duh, softball in the spring. xD
I have to admit, there has been more heartbreak this year than any other year, but looking back, I realize it was all because of dumb thinking and mistakes that will never be made again. I'm not going to go into detail. The point : It could've turned out much worse. But it didn't.
Starting tomorrow, I might line up some new year resolutions. Probably some small things like : Keep my room clean and take more photos and whatnot. Nothing big.
So, to end this, I'll say a simple
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL
My Love For the North and My Hate For PeopleWhen I leave the thunderous cities and the insane scream of the people, then I can finally sigh of relief. And when going northward to the vastness of the fells and the chilling winds, then I feel alive. I've never been a peoples person, even though I am polite when I need to. My work requires that. It's all a mask. When I leave the towns of the plenty, I take of my mask and become one with nature. My Love For the North and My Hate For People in Personal More Like This
My dream would be to live secluded (with fast internet mind you. Yes, I am a slave to the internet) in a cabin somewhere above the polar circle. To have the mild summers and biting cold autumns and winters. Where people can live me alone.
Just walking to work I hear people talking about absolute nonsense and mundane shit. How can these people really live with themselves?
Most things annoy me with people. It's like working out, mentally, going around which such spite against them, the masses, the drones. Everyone going with flow towards a common senseless goal.
Yes, I am a slave to the grind

Portraiture with Natural Lighting
1.) Avoid Direct Sunlight
While it can really bring out the color of the eyes and make them pop, having your model stare into the sun should never be on the agenda. Not only is it exceedingly uncomfortable for your model, but it casts very harsh shadows. In most cases, you want to position your model with the sun behind them, or to the side. This will illuminate the hair and offer a nice glow. The issue then is that the subject's face may be too dark (underexposed). To solve this, you can bounce some light back into th
