I have never found a companion who was so companionable as solitude.
Henry David Thoreau
I always thought Thoreau’s comment was simply a word game— ultimately not of much value and false at its core. A Valentines Day in solitude should mean being all alone and alone means being unhappy, pure and simple. Still, it will turn out in life that the most alone we can feel is ironically in the crush of family and friends and even in the embrace of one’s Valentines Day companion— but lost and unfulfilled in one’s dreams and visions.

What is it about a fictional character first introduced to the public in Great Britain in 1887 that has kept him being reincarnated, with generationally-correct upgrades, over and over again in film and on television? Who is this literary hero whose portrayal over the past century by such past masters as Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett to today’s vanguard talents Robert Downey, Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch has inspired such a continuing outpouring of fan appreciation?

So, I had some commissioned work I've been doing for a guy who'd been serving in Korea, and I wanted to keep it super-safe, so I put it in my super-safe, water-fire-and-smudge proof portfolio/case. Which is also where I keep my botanical plates.

I live out in a rural county and have to take a fairly windy, two-lane road to get into town. I am on said road at dusk, going five under because the deer like to play chicken with my van. A muscle car with a souped-up engine, flame decals and the license plate "WRK 4 FUN" comes roaring up behind me, going at least 20 over the limit. the road is made of blind curves so he cannot pass me. This infuriates him, so he flashes his brights, curses, gives me the finger, etc. I do not speed up, because hitting a deer might kill me. After about 60 seconds, he decides to pass me on the left, on a blind curve.
…and he hits the oncoming police car.
I slam on the brakes and get out to make sure everyone is okay. He hit the cruiser mostly on the side, so the driver's side engine, mirror and door are wasted but no-one is seriously hurt.

Perhaps it is because they aren't old enough, and are hence unfamiliar with the ways of the road, like riding with the traffic, and actually stopping at stop signs. Professional vs. hobbiestSomething that's been on my mind a lot lately is how the two differe and which is ultimately better. I know many people on DA would vote professionalism when it comes to art, aka it being your source of living, getting "paid" for the art you produce (be it traditional art, theater, dance, etc). However, I also believe that a lot of us have a glorified view of how being a professional artist would be, most on here being so young and inexperienced in the professional world. Some of the rant ahead was pulled from a conversation between friends on Facebook.Professional vs. hobbiest in Personal More Like This
From a theater/acting/dance standpoint: hobbyists will work for free, which massively undercuts those who wouldn't.
The market value has decreased so massively that a small time artist simply can't survive on the $100 here $250 there that they receive. It breaks down to about .50¢ per hour. From a dancer standpoint, that one or two hundred doesnt even cover the cost of creating a costume, let alone living. When I was in Seattle I

The Mary Sue DilemmaWritten for :iconthe-bards-college:The Mary Sue Dilemma in Personal More Like This
I'm pretty certain all of us know the term "Mary Sue". It is one of the most dreaded labels our original characters can earn. But what exactly is a Mary Sue?
Is she an unlikable protagonist?
Is she poorly written?
Is she cliched?
Is she an author avatar?
Is she an idealized character?
Is she a power fantasy?
Is she infallible?
Is she the center of attention?
Can a Mary Sue be male?
Can a Mary Sue be a canon character?
What exact combination of these traits are needed to make a character a Mary Sue?
The term originated back in 1973 in a parody Star Trek fanfiction called, "A Trekkie's Tale." I had never read it before tonight and was shocked to find how short it was. I highly recommend taking a minute to read it before continuing here.
Over time, Mary Sue stopped referencing the specific character and became notoriously attached as a term meaning unrealistic self-insertion wish-fulf
How to respond to feedbackTutorial for :iconthe-bards-college:How to respond to feedback in Personal More Like This
:iconkwenos: asked that I write a tutorial on how to respond to feedback.
I'm going to break this down into two categories - Sincere Feedback and Trolling
1. Give a response.
It's usually hard for readers to work up the courage to leave even a simple, "I love it!" much less a more detailed comment. Especially if you're one of their favorite artists. It's like talking to a celebrity for many. It can be very disparaging to send a note to someone and never hear back from them. If they can take a moment to compliment you on your work, then you can take a moment to say, "Thank you."
2. Be kind.
It can be easy to get snappish when you've heard the same response a dozen times, especially if you do a joke piece. But most people don't read comments first and if they do, sometimes it's hard to read hundreds of comments beforehand. Or maybe you have a disclaimer and the reader doesn't see it. It's a little aggravating for us, but unfortunately

While Battle Stars and Rank are your stats and fighting ability, credits are 'money to spend' in the game. There will be stores and some fun interaction with canon characters in the future where these credits can be used. This includes and won't be limited to purchase of weapons, Battle Stars, bribing for a rank up, buying into special side missions, and buying a second 'game character' slot.
You are expected to keep your points up to date in your Datapad. Mods will keep track of your points in the member directory post. In the future a directory of stores will be posted in this journal.
