Tribute:

Ayrton Senna
was a Brazilian racing driver. Senna was a three-time Formula One world champion . He died in a crash at Tamburello corner while leading the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix and is the most recent driver to die at the wheel of a Formula One car.

Senna began his motorsport career in karting, moving up to open-wheel racing in 1981, and winning the British Formula 3 championship in 1983. He made his Formula One debut with Toleman-Hart in 1984 before moving to Lotus-Renault the following year and winning six Grands Prix over the next three seasons. In 1988, he joined Frenchman Alain Prost at McLaren-Honda. Between them, they won all but one of the 16 Grands Prix that year and Senna his first World Championship. Prost claimed the championship in 1989, and Senna his second and third championships in 1990 and 1991. In 1992, the Williams-Renault combination began to dominate Formula One. Senna nonetheless managed to finish the 1993 season as runner-up, winning five races and negotiating a move to Williams in 1994.

Senna was recognised for his qualifying speed over one lap and from 1989 until 2006 held the record for most pole positions. He was especially quick in wet conditions, as shown by his performances in the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix, the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix, and the 1993 European Grand Prix. He also holds the record for most victories at the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix – six – and is the third most successful driver of all time in terms of race wins. Senna courted controversy throughout his career, particularly during his turbulent rivalry with Alain Prost. Both the 1989 Championship won by Prost and the 1990 Championship won by Senna were decided by collisions between them at those years' Japanese Grands Prix.

Sort of a tribute to Bruce McLaren and the boys at McLaren Cars and to Peter Revson.
It's hard to believe now but during the era that these cars are from McLaren had a racing program that included Indy cars, Cam Am cars, and Formula One cars and they would win championships in all of those classes.
Colored Pencils on Bristol Multimedia Paper (the thick stuff).
On the outside border I outlined the edges in blue marker and then filled in the middle with the same color as the Lettering and nose contrast.

This is a depiction of the copper colored Ford GT MK IV that was driven in the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans by Mario Andretti and Lucien Bianchi. They didn't fair real well that day but earlier in the year Mario and Bruce McLaren in the Yellow MK IV had dominated the 12 Hours of Sebring for the debut of what I think is one of the most beautiful race cars of all time.

To do this drawing I took a different approach to what I usually do . I have more planning on this drawing than any other drawing that I have ever done. My usual course of action is to concentrate first on the main subject matter, and then add the backgrounds at the end. The problem I have with this is that by the time I have finished expending the concentration that it takes for me to do the main subject I am "out of gas" and don't have a lot of interest in the rest of the drawing, and it shows sometimes. Understanding my weakness as an artist, or human being, or what ever, I finished all of the background for this drawing first. I had done the layout for the car, but from that point on, I did not touch the car until the backgrounds were done. I have been working on this drawing, on and off, since last December.
I would also like to thank Aya-Wavedancer for her kind support and for sending me her photos of the MK IV's that she had ( she knows more about these cars than I do ).
At the risk of sounding self serving, I also want to say that the drawing ( you are seeing a photo of the drawing) is better than this depiction. I did my best but the photo doesn't represent the colors that I was able to achieve on the drawing itself. There are no shades of copper colored pencils, only orange ,sunburst yellow, lilac ,yellow, and so on.

One of the portraits I've made with that awesome new pencil :3 At least part of it, the rest is made with my old ones...

For the ones who doesn't know him, he was one of the best F1 drivers ever and a very special person.

I hope you like it. I just put all my heart on this :-)

Ayrton, we miss you.
