"Output is maintaining at Twenty-two percent," The AI noted to the hovering pony. Strapped over each hoof of the small khaki mare was a metallic boot of chromed steel that reached almost to her knees, and from each metal hoof sprouted a small jet of blue-white plasma. Using all four hooves like this, Clockwork Key was able to hover slowly about the lab. She had to be careful though, cables of all sorts were still connected to

Well, here we are.
For those of you who made it here to the end of this story, thank you for sticking it out with me. I wanted to thank everypony who read my story, especially those who left me feedback on my DA and EqD pages. Without that feedback, I couldn't have continued to improve and write as I have been.
I would like to thank Corwyn and The_Mechanic, both of whom acted as pre-readers and editors in helping me track down plot holes, general mistakes, and editing failures. Without their help, this story wouldn't have been nearly as good as it was. Also thanks to my own mother who, while not understanding, encouraged my creative impulses every step of the way.
Finally I want to thank Lauren Faust and all of the "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" team for making this jaded 38 year old fall in love with a bunch of brightly colored ponies.

"You couldn't resist, could you?" the dark alicorn asked, her horn glowing softly. On the field, about a hundred or so yards from her, a mechanized pony darted about in the air. Blue-white bolts lanced from her hoof-tips to rip through the illusions seemingly intent on doing her harm.
The white alicorn chuckled from the doorway behind her sister, "No, I could not."
"If you hadn't, I would have done it myself," the younger sister answered, her eyes remained focused on the field as the green and gold armour of the flying pony flashed in the midday sun. For over a week, Dragonfly had been spending her mornings like this, in a constant barrage of practice against illusions the Night Princess summoned for her.

Most of the physical consoles were gone, replaced instead by large tiled panels on both ceiling and floor. If anything the room looked rather bare now, save for a single console, a handful of blinking computers in one corner, and a number of holographic projectors along the perimeter. However, if one looked under any one of those tiles, they would find a number of robotic arms of varying specificity. The only other feature in the room was a metallic looking pony, the basic framework of a power-suit, currently unpainted and lacking weapon systems. Instead this metallic pony-armour stood near the far wall, f

"Miss Key, please try to relax."
The mare in question, shorter then the average pony of her age, glowered darkly at the nurse. Her green eyes were filmy with worry and exhaustion, but she hadn't moved from the waiting room. Over the past few days she had become an installation piece in the hospital, her disheveled form and dark mane standing out in stark contrast to the pristine white decor. The waiting room was pleasantly carpeted with a few bench-like chairs for ponies to sit on. Despite this, Clockwork Key had been steadily pacing the same patch of carpet for hours now, threatening to wear a hole in it.
"Clockwork?" a different voice asked, and the mare shifted her bloodshot gaze to the questioner.

"It's good to see you up and around," the doctor said, and smiled her best.
The mare did not answer in kind, her gaze particularly acidic as she looked over the lilac coated doctor. The doctor ignored this and used her magic to hover a clipboard at eye-level, her horn glowing gently as she surveyed the treatments and other doctor's notes about this patient. Clockwork could already guess what more then a few of those comments said: that she was surly, uncooperative, and mean spirited. She knew the doctors and nurses were only doing their best to help her, and after her brush with death, she really should be more appreciative, but she just couldn't cobble together much appreciation right now not after what Princess Luna had told her.

In all of Equestria, there's no pony quite like the Mail-pony of Ponyville. Her name is Derpy Hooves, and as the Ponyvillians say "Derpy by name, Derpy by nature." But they love her all the same, despite the mail sometimes being delivered late or to the wrong pony, because Derpy is the one pony you can tell your secrets to, and expect them to be kept.
Sometimes a pony of Ponyville needs to get something off his or her chest, but they don't want anyone to know about it. So they write it in a letter and give it to Derpy to deliver. And Derpy can tell, by the wistful look on the pony's face as they hand her the letter and by the fact that the letter has no stamp on it (for the Ponyville Post Office gives every pony a page of stamps the day after every Winter Wrap Up with their own unique cutie mark on them to use throughout the year), that the letter isn't meant to be delivered. So she puts it in her saddlebag, separate from the one with all the

I don't remember how long I lay there, slumped in the chair, face down, tears dripping onto the wooden top of the dresser. I think I must have cried myself asleep for the next thing I knew I could hear a most peculiar noise.
It sounded like someone eating quickly and messily.

Wait I was dreaming, right? I still had my eyes closed, so it could be a dream one of those drunk, overheated, feverish dreams I often had after a few too many drinks. But then I felt something nuzzling the side of my face something soft and furry, with warm, moist breath that smelled of vanilla and... hot-sauce?
I opened my right eye a crack and I couldn't see anything but a great patch of colour and I suddenly panicked, thinking I must

"It's so awesome that you guys could all come!" she said, grinning at her friends. Then she bowed to Celestia and Luna, saying "Spitfire sends her apologies, Your Highnesses - she's still not happy with some of the choreography and she wants to fit in as much rehearsal as possible before tonight."
Celestia smiled. "It sounds as if you have a wonderful show prepared for us tonight."
Rainbow nodded enthusiastically, but then frowned suddenly. "I just hope everything goes according to plan " and nopony screws anything up! A vision of a certain blonde-maned Pegasus pony with quizzical eyes appeared before her and she resisted groaning out loud.

"I'm so glad that you decided to come to the ball with me, Dash!" said Star Catcher. Her mane was done up in a formal style, an abundance of curls fashioned into a crown at her poll, the rest falling down the other side in a waterfall of blue and pink. Her ears glittered with diamond earrings and the necklace at her throat sparkled. Dash had never seen a filly look more stunning. She blushed as she took the hoof Star Catcher offered her and they stepped together through the huge doors that led into the great hall of Cloudsdale Flight School.
The roof of the hall was open to the air and the weather had been expressly designed for the evening's celebration. A sliver of a moon shone down through layers of stratus clouds that lit up in its soft light like a veil of glowing yellow-silver. Gorgeous banks of cumulus surrounded them, and illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun their undersides were aglow,

In the blink of an eye, the early morn had turned into the end of evening. At least, that is what it felt like to the mare as she trudged through mud and brush with no discrimination. She hoped they would be upon the edge of the forest soon, for it had been a long day of physical exertion and no rest for food or water. She was running solely on her excitement at having almost acquired the biggest bounty of her career.
Twilight Sparkle walked obediently behind the bounty hunter as the sun began to set once more below the horizon. She wore a Mithril bracelet on each leg and one on her horn: an inescapable situation for any unicorn, including the one she was being marched to that very instant. Vinyl had taken a rope and tied it around her neck after the librarian had began to move again and grasped it tightly in her magical hold to ensure she would not escape.

"The worst part of any battle is not the actual fight, boy, but rather the wait for it to start," General Portland of the Royal Equestrian Army spoke with his front legs slung over the railing of a ship. He was an old, battle hardened unicorn stallion with a grey coat, white mane and the mark of a jewel-encrusted sword on his flank. Being a high-ranking officer, he only wore a navy blue jacket with several medals decorating the lapels and breast of it. For days, the weather had decided to stagnate over the city of Manehatten, throwing it into perpetual overcast skies.
Meanwhile, the colt at his side pondered his words, having wondered what put the stallion so on-edge for the past fortnight. A million thoughts buzzed beneath his glittering helmet, each vying for position at the surface. "So, you expect they'll try something here soon, sir?" he asked, choosing the foremost thought.

Everything was serene and still in the darkness of the new night. Only the fast-paced clipping of hooves on the cobbles in the street could be heard as the city of Canterlot began to wind down for the day. Several ponies still going about their evenings gave her odd looks as she rushed past, yet none of the guard paid her any attention, as they were focused on other, more important matters.
Rarity wove through the streets in an attempt to shake any ponies off of her tail, running at full clip unless she came across one of the guards. What was Twilight playing at? Surely she did not think she could get outside the town gates without getting the third degree from the guards, especially at night! Of course, there were several tunnels dug by the Crusaders to get in and out, but the white unicorn had no idea which were discovered or not in her time away, never mind the idea of dragging herself through the muck!

Cracks and snaps sounded quietly in defiance of the thick tension that permeated the air. The familiar dance of tongues of flame flashed against stone and wood alike, the thin extensions twisting and twirling before detaching from the body of fire and evaporating from existence. She could very well have sat there and eyed the tiny expression of both destruction and creation for hours and never get bored. However, a particularly loud snap brought her to her senses.
Soft, sad music accompanied the crackle of the flames; the brass sedated, yet powerful as a pony sang a haunting melody of tragedy and loss. She sympathised with the long-dead stallion. Soon after, the strings, led by a piano, took the lead from the brass and pounding rhythm section.

The sound of flapping wings drowned out the oppressive silence as the two mares trudged through the thicket of the ethereal forest. In a way, it was therapeutic for her to hear the familiar sound so close to her; to know that she had a friend who still earnestly cared about her. But... it also reminded her of something far more sinister and recent, something that still haunted her waking thoughts if she let them dawdle from what needed to be done.
"Let's see how she likes the Brazen Bull," cackled the phantom voice of a griffon, followed by her own pained screams of wreathing agony, turned into the snorts and grunts of a bull by the complex series of pipes. It was almost enough to make her stomach turn over... almost.

Sunshine spilled onto the viridian lawn as the morning sun crested over the battlements of the old castle, causing the dew still clinging to the blades to sparkle before evaporating. Predictably, Princess Celestia had not been there when she had awakened, nor was she down at breakfast in the royal dining room. An invitation to eat there was a lifetime affair, and it was far better than sitting with the rest of the staff awkwardly in her usual corner table while not talking to any pony. She might have learned how to make friends, but that did not stop the castle staff from being just a little skittish around her, being the personal student to a living goddess and all.

Once upon a time, in a land beyond the magic of Equestria, there lived a resourceful and proud species. They survived and thrived in the worst kind of climate imaginable to ponies: extreme oppressive heat in the day followed by bone-chilling nights. They were the buffalo, beset by dangers both great and small, from poisonous snakes up to massive dragons who searched the desert for an easy meal. It was a hard life for them, but they lived it by their own choice, for they were strong as well as proud.
Our story starts one fateful day in the life of one of the tribes' younger members: a small calf by the name of Burning Sands. He was not more than ten winters old at the time when they first stampeded within sight of the end of their desert. Bound by the natural curiosity that binds all young of every species, he became enthralled by what he saw: a forest of deep green and brown. He had only heard tales of the f

For the past two hours, the pony trudged through the sudden storm, only then beginning to realize the full implications of the destroyed weather factory. Ducking for cover was not an option on the slopes of the mountain and setting up her tent would only attract lightning. Why had she forgotten to pack that magical lightning rod?
The white mare sighed, her voice drowned out by the ferocity of the wind against her face. Twilight Sparkle (now known as Blueprint to everypony else) thanked her lucky stars that nopony was with her so she could cast a bubble shield charm, which stopped the driving rain from soaking her to the core. It had essentially culminated in a conveyor-belt like motion with the waiter simply depositing a pile of marshmallows, fruit and sweets next to the fountain, and leaving her to it. The sun was what raised Octavia from her uncharacteristically late slumber. She shifted herself slightly as she woke, reworking muscles that had lain comfortably unused for the night. The night before came rushing back, Octavia's cheeks lighting up as she recalled some of the events that had...occurred last night. It must be said that she had never awoken upside-down on her own couch before. This turned out to be more difficult than she had imagined, as her drunken self had apparently managed to delicately balance herself in this precarious position. The butcher's knife was raised into the air, sparks flying as it had scrapped along the ground. The frantic rush of the other Pinkie was closing in, ready to strike down. For a moment, everything seemed to hold still, right on the edge of death, two forces that never should've met collided.
There was silence for a moment, befor

Night lay on Ponyville like a heavy shroud, the moon and stars hidden behind a thick layer of clouds, blocking light from getting through. The only light came through shuttered windows, and even then only a little. From the clouds drifted down a seemingly endless rain of snow and ice, making the town as cold physically as it had become in its heart. The streets were lost in blankets of white, making travel to anywhere but the closest buildings nothing but a death wish. The light of the new day washed over Khaza Rim, dispelling the pure horror and carnage of the previous days of battle. Everything seemed easier to take in the daylight.
Yet to Spike it only meant seeing Gilda more clearly. He sat atop the flat peak of Khaza Rim, the vast vista of the battlefield spread out before him. This went totally ignored by the dragon as he held Gilda in his arms, wishing more than anything for her to just move.

The Canterlot Castle throne room was still seeing repairs that snowy dawn, but this did not stop the throngs of ponies and other creatures filling it to the four corners, a low rumble of hushed voices in the air. The windows, their stained-glass broken out, let in streams of warm and clear let. It lent the hall a solemn, almost stern feeling, like the kind felt in a courtroom. None there thought it inappropriate.

Yellow Jacket awoke to cold and darkness. Lying on his left side, nothing met his open eyes but an old, decaying wall of blueish grey stone. Seconds seemed to stretch into hours to him as his eyes traced over the line work and delicate details, all but faded away through the ages. It reminded him somewhat of the older halls and passages in Canterlot University, if they were allowed to face the ravages of time like anything else.
A slight shuffling, a tapping of hooves on stone, eventually caught the Pegasus's attention. He rolled over onto his other side and looked to see Twilight Sparkle. She was a few feet away from J

After a time she didn't know the length of, Twilight came to the realization that she was not lying on her own bed in her library home, but on one a lot less comfortable. With this realization she opened her eyes, quickly groaning and closing them again from the harsh hospital light. "Ow..." She was in a hospital. The world has changed. It is in the water...it is in the air...it is in the earth. Much that had once been is lost, because those charged to keep hold of it, have not. The world was not always so tame. In past eras there was cruelty, and hate, and outright malice. Once, the fate of the world was decided by gods and princesses. The woods were wild, animals free, and the great races lived in peace under the rule of King Cronus. The world was young and fresh, in its summer, and blood had not been spilt in hate or anger for a very long time.
A long time passed, and it came time for the start of King Cronus's eon slumber, and the handing down of power to his stewards. His war helm was given to the dragon

Much has changed in Equestria and the world at large in the nearly two hundred years since the Elements of Harmony and all their friends destroyed the evil conqueror Tirek once and for all. Nations rose and fell. The unsettled wilderness shrank. History and legend marched on. Technology developed, the true scientific age starting with Twilight's mechanical support harness for her brother, who was crippled in the final battle. Towns died out or became cities. Cities became great metropolises, shining beacons of civilization.
Nowhere is this progress more prevalent than in the ancient city of

Knights of Equestria part 1: the Night the Sky Burned
The moon shone brilliantly, thought Twilight Sparkle, as she atop the balcony of her library home. Night had fallen on Ponyville and the rest of Equestria some hours ago, the blazing sun replaced by a full moon and countless stars, little pinpricks of light in a sea of deep blues, purples, and blacks. A faint wind rustled the leaves of her home, and if Twilight listened hard enough she could just make out a faint noise in the air; the combined sound of sleeping of all of Ponyville. Except for her, of course.
A shooting star shot across the sky, and another content sigh left Twilight. She loved looking up at the sky on nights like this, clear and cloudless. It soothed an ache in her heart of hearts that she never felt during

First on the list was the Rocky girl. Zim noted that she had a calm expression on her face and a voice that sounded neither demanding or shrill. She seemed like a normal female human...something Zim had never thought he would ever meet, considering the human females he had met back at the Skool.
But her blonde friend...she seemed a little too perky...and tended to giggle continuously. Zim made a note that the Veronica girl was 'too happy and half-way insane'.
As much as he tried to consider it dull, Zim found himself actually listening as the girls spoke, explaining one thing from another and adding many 'fun' facts. He raised an eye ridge when Rocky mentioned they were going to have dinner with a few friends tonight in some place called New York...

Though everyone had enjoyed their time on Irk, it was time to go home. Many needed to tend back to their jobs as well as make up for having skipped school; Fanboy and Chum Chum had hoped they'd never return to Mr. Mufflin's class.
"You packed the invitations, right?" Purple asked as he looked at Shruid. "Remember, this is a very important celebration, and all is to be invited."
The advisor looked uneasy. "But...ponies? Weird creatures? And humans who wear underwear outside their pants?"
"I resent that!" Fanboy huffed, he and Chum Chum having heard him from afar.

"A sack of crab grass pellets, coming right up!" Lol said cheerfully as she bent down and dragged a large bag out from underneath her storage cabinet. She hauled it over to the woman, and was stunned when Oz's mom was able to hold it in her delicate, aged hands.
"Oh, you are such a sweetheart," the old woman smiled at her. She handed her the money as well as some extra. "Keep the change, dear. Galaxy Hills has become even more happy since you and Winn have begun living here."
Lol took the money gratefully just as Red came into the shop with a large crate in his hands.

His Earth parents allowed him to stay in his lab, thinking that he needed time alone. They were just so horrified that his leaders, the aliens whom had sent Zim to their planet and thus met the family he always wanted, thought of Zim as nothing but a defect, having hoped he would die on their planet.
Brian looked up from his book and watched Rita carry a tray over to the trash bin that led to the underground lab. She opened the lid and gently placed the tray inside the bin before stepping on the control that worked its way down to where their alien son was.

That did it as Rofl panted quietly and leaned into his touch as his tail wagged. Red, amazed at what he accomplished, looked up to see the impressed expression on Lol's face as she smiled at him encouragingly.
Red just gazed at her smile...it was just so mesmerizing...and her long brown hair, nearly covering half her face...he just wanted to reach over and brush it to the side so he could see her eyes more clearly...
Red broke out of his trance when he felt something warm and wet on his fingers. He looked down and cringed as Rofl licked his fingers affectionately.

Streaks of bright, white light breaking over the far-off horizon signaled the rising of a new sun and the beginning of a new day. The beams of sunlight cut through the dense fog of the chilly early morning like a knife through butter. The thin, wispy accumulation of water droplets began to melt away under the onslaught of energy from the newly-risen light source. The vapor gradually returned to its usual invisible form in the early morning light, revealing another clear sky, set to greet the earliest of risers with its wide open vistas of chilled air.
Light, no longer impeded by the wispy fog, now freely found its way to spread across the landscape, falling across building, tree, and mountain alike and bathing them all in the first wondrous illumination of a new day. Striking the frosty panes of a glass window, a beacon shone into the bedroom of a cozy farmhouse a bedroom where two ponies slept peacefully in each other's warm embrace. In an empty field outside of Ponyville, drops of liquid fell out of the sky and hit the ground. The citizens of Ponyville were more than familiar with rain, especially those weather pegasi who created it, but this particular event was different. Ponyville had, of course, experienced strange weather phenomena before, with the chocolate milk raining down from cotton candy clouds during the brief reign of Discord still fresh in everypony's mind, but most ponies had another reason to avoid the falling drops in this field. Rainbow Dash was entirely too comfortable to wake up. Nope, she decided she was perfectly fine with continuing to sleep. She was warm, comfortable and content to completely ignore the world for another few hours. She shifted herself, her fur brushing against something very warm and very soft. She snuggled in closer. She rather enjoyed the way the soft, fuzzy surface cushioned her body, the slow, rhythmic up-and-down motion that gently rocked and soothed her, the faint scent of apples
Even in her drowsy state, and despite her conviction that the morning had arrived far too early for her liking, Rainbow Dash was enjoying herself. Perhaps it was the stubborn determination that was her nature, or, more likely, the excessively late night she had enjoyed previously, but she kept herself groggily determined to stay in bed, snuggling with her warm, fuzzy, apple-smelling thing. Rainbow Dash's nose twitched. This was an involuntary movement, more of a reflex than anything else, brought on by the perceived presence of something bothering her face. To the barely-conscious pegasus, the sensation was strange. If she had been able to think about it, she would have thought that something was brushing against her closed eyelid. As a last-ditch effort to retain her sleep, her hoof lifted to the level of her eyes in a half-conscious attempt to remove the irritant. Unfortunately, this action had little effect as the slowly-waking pony soon found herself waving her hoof around in front of her face in a dazed early-morning stupor, futilely attempting to ward off the encroachments of the sun as its light streamed in through the window, falling across her still-closed eyes. For the first time in a long while, Scootaloo felt warm. Long tendrils of pleasing heat radiated pleasure and comfort throughout her body, bringing the filly a level of happiness she had not known for quite some time. Yet, the source of her warmth was not the thick wooden walls of the cozy farmhouse which barred the ponies inside from the raging elements. It was not the fire, roaring and snapping away within the cheery little hearth. It was not the steaming mug of hot apple cider which sat before her, the contents of which had sizzled and nearly scalded her throat when she took her first big, refreshing gulp. It was not the hoof-knitted wool blanket which Fluttershy had draped over the filly's back. All of these things contributed to the comfortably heated atmosphere of the house, but, in Scootaloo's mind, they were not the source of her warmth.

There was precious little light coming from the filly's room, but what illumination was still there allowed Applejack and Rainbow Dash a near-perfect view into the guest room that they had given over to Scootaloo. Scootaloo lay on her back on the bed, her head pressed deep into the pillow by Applebloom, who had curled her way on top of the other filly. In the dim light, Applejack and Rainbow Dash could only just make out the fact that they seemed to be kissing. Albeit clumsily and completely without regard whatsoever towards the finer aspects of such an experience, their lips were pressed together awkwardly all the same.

A stiff, cold wind whipped its way across the rolling hills and fields and through the groups of snow-covered trees, swaying heavily-laden branches and stirring the glistening piles of white snow as it blew. Many latent snowflakes enjoyed a short, triumphant return to the late-morning sky as they were borne upward on each gust, twirling and sparkling in the sun's brilliant morning light as they soared above grove and plain, only to come drifting lazily back down to earth when the wind died back down. This process repeated itself innumerable times on the crisp winter morning. Despite the sun, it was a cold morning, a condition the biting wind did nothing to remedy, as the air retained its chilly quality even as the time advanced closer to midday. The sun's light, however, still managed to create a cheery scene as its rays shown down upon the countryside, sending the rolling dunes of pure white ablaze with countless, tiny, glittering reflections.
