This is a shot from my August 4 workshop. I have titled it Pumped Up Down Under in reference to a calendar I started in the late 80's that went through until about 2007. It was based initially on gym shots like this one where the models were always shot with free weights. Back when it started it was partly created to encourage Australian women to consider using free weights as an option to get fit looking bodies. Whilst the shots were sexy they were also more authentic than most other female calendar shots at the time. As such many women were drawn to the calendars and used them as inspirational tools.
When I started in the photography/modelling industry in 1989 I initially became known for gym shots of women. At the time I found that few women looked to weights as a serious exercise option. The ones who did were very extreme and if anything scared other women away from using weights. My idea back then was to present fit and attractive women with weights and to photograph them to look authentic and inspiring. This is an image I did just recently for a woman who wanted gym shots for her portfolio. The shot reminded me of the essence of where I started in photography. To this day I still love women who look balanced and empowered.
So important in gym shots that the model looks oblivious to the camera. If they look like they are posing the shot feels very cheap. In this shot Penny seems totally focassed on the dumbell and as such looks very authentic. In any aspect of life we will achieve the best results by giving total concentration to the task at hand and staying present in the moment.
My Favourite Subject returns to my gallery. On the same late August weekend as my shoot with Bianca, I had the honour - not to mention sheer pleasure - of shooting with the truly ravishing Ellena for the second time.
First up, I present some faves from day one. I've been itching to upload these ever since the shoot, so I'm only too happy to show off our work...
... and this one in particular, which has instantly become one of my all-time favourites.
