Roy's Peak
Wanaka Area

The walk up to Mount Roy from Lake Wanaka takes you more than 1km straight up along a 4WD track initially, then a steep and narrow ridgeline. The weather was very kind that evening for the walk down after dusk but well worth the view, the blisters and the takeout dinner afterward ! Lake Wanaka meanders off into the distance framed by the town of Wanaka on the right and Mount Aspiring National Park on the left. One of many memorable moments from our now distaant trip to New Zealand in May.

Lake Manapouri
New Zealand

During our recent trip to New Zealand, I did one night of the Kepler Track and found myself at Shallow Bay on the shores of Lake Manapouri. Rising mists and light rained combined to give this rainbow over the lake itself. This seemed to last forever and was one of many great moments of our trip. This was an exposoure blend of three images done manually. I did take one with a big stopper but found the feel completely different without the ripples of water and sheen.

The actual footage of the rainbow can be seen in this video

Glenorchy Lagoon
New Zealand

Our time spent around Lake Wakatipu was characterised by clear conditions which meant freezing mornings. This led to the marsh grasses freezing over and layers of mist over the water surfaces in the early morning. Charlotte was asleep on my back for the whole time we were out here but hopefully she took in some of the freshness of the whole experience from just being there :) Marianne was also out and about taking pictures which I will have to bug her to post here !

At the crack of dawn, we were at one of Iceland's most incredible locations - Jökulsįrlón, literally- glacier lagoon. I have never seen such an amazing place, and by luck, it was a clear morning, allowing the dormant volcano of Öręfajökull to recieve a wonderful alpine glow under the white moon.
This image was the one of the first I shot there, and the magical light wasn't at its peak yet. But the surreal combination of blue and pink is still embedded deep in my mind.
A lineup of beautiful glaciers was right on the lagoon's bank, as if they had decided to join us in watching the magic unravel.

If you'd like to experience and shoot this magical location, among many other incredible icy sceneries, you're welcome to join my upcoming 'Land of Ice' Iceland winter workshop taking place next January. The workshop is co-guided by renowned local Icelandic mountaineer and pro photographer Skarphedinn Thrainsson, and it will bring you to the most amazing locations for landscape photography in south Iceland.

The frozen lagoon in front of Breišamerkurjökull glacier was an amazing place to visit. Endless fields of blue icebergs, some as big as a house, assumed countless forms and triggered everyone's imagination. The soft morning sun colored the mountaintops red, to complement the scene.

This photo of the Matterhorn taken on a cold evening in October conveys a mystic atmosphere. After the first snowfall, the Stelli Lake is slightly snow-covered but still ice-free. The long exposure captures the moving clouds above the mountain tops of the Valais Alps.

This is a photo of a perfect reflection of the Mont Blanc Massif in the ‘Lac de Chérsery”. On that evening in October, the water of the lake only remained completely calm for a few minutes offering me this tremendous photo opportunity. Starting from left to right, the photo allows one’s gaze to wander from the Auigelle Verte to the Grande Jurasse and main peak of the Mont Blanc.

1/1/2013 - My first seascape photo outing in forever, it's been well over 4 months since I took any coastal photos. It sure as hell felt great to get back out there doing what I first fell in love with when I picked up the camera.

Ostler Peak in Utah's High Uintas mountain range catches the last rays of a sunset. The smoke from the fires spread across the state give the unobstructed sunset light a fiery orange haze, adding to the drama of an already dramatic landscape. You can see the nearly full moon making an early appearance in the top left of the image.

A little slice of paradise. Rock falls in Havasu canyon in Arizona. I worked up some courage earlier that day and jumped off this into the white water below. Great memories! Natural occurring Lime in the water creates the beautiful turquoise hues.

A lesson learned as to not leave when you think the light is over. It almost is never over. In this case, I waited out some boring light and saw the sky turn pink. I then saw the colors were reflected onto the surface of the water and shot the scene you see here. Using a polarizer really helped bring out the color, but also the rocks beneath the water.

A dead tree awaits the warm light of sunrise as it's perched along the cold crisp south rim of the grand canyon. This was one of the many images I shot over the weekend. This time of day is starting to become my favorite time to shoot. The glow just before sunrise is just beautiful.

This is another take on the cliffs of over the lower salt river. I have one more to share from here, and they all are somewhat similar. However, each one is a study in light and the different moods specific light provides over a landscape. This is a stitch of nine vertical images to include the cliffs and moon sneaking between the pink clouds. This was only taken about 20 minutes after my previous image. It is amazing how quickly the light can change out in the desert.

This is an image taken during my last photography workshop in Iceland, june 2012. Here is a block of ice from the Vatnajökull icefield, deposed on the black sand beach of Jökulsarlon by the North Atlantic Ocean.
It was about 1am, during the infinite night glow of summer.

Evening light on the Grand Roc Noir and Vallonnet Summit in Vanoise National Park. The autumn sun declines gradually on the horizon, coloring with gold the snow covered peaks. The night and the cold fall come around us with a quiet and soothing silence. The wind has stopped, making a perfect reflection on the surface of a lake without any waves.

Hello,

This is a picture from my last trip in Patagonia... We were here in the deep valley of Rio Electrico, near the roofs of mount Fitz Roy. We were planning to reach the circo de Los Altares on the Hielo Continental icefield.

This morning we ad an amazing sunrise on this place called "La Playita", on the shore of Lago Electrico. The weather was amazingly quite, with no wind. Some really rare conditions in this area. These conditions offered us a great reflection of the Fitz Roy peak, in the morning glow...

These mountains are really different from what we know in France with the Alps... they're really impressive and I'll keep great remembers of this trip.

Here is another image from yesterday mornings sunrise at Abraham Lake. This amazing light did not last very long so it required a lot of running on the ice to try and find some different foreground. At one point my ice cleat flew off while in full sprint and I nearly took a spill, but luckily my ever so graceful arm flailing slowed me down enough that I did not fall.

Peyto Lake
Banff National Park

A few days ago I walked up the closed snow filled road up to the Peyto Lake viewpoint. There was some fresh snow over night that gave a nice white blanket over the trees and the edge of the lake.

A hunt for a photograph that I found in Denver International Airport by Thomas Mangelsen led me to this spot. Located at the very end of a gravel road, I spent the night in my hot rod anticipating something like this. My mom told me the day before to not worry about how all of my photographs turned out. It only takes one.

Taking a different way to the waters edge, my timing was perfect. I was able to get a few shots just when the colors were at their peak. The warm colors made the water look deceivingly warm, but I wasn't about to test it.

I focused on this rock under the water, allowing my nd grad to subdue the sky while maintaining the reflection.

On a side note, the colors were so vibrant, I actually reduced the saturation and vibrancy. Quite a bit might I add.

While the air cools surrounding the desert and mountains, the colors themselves burn richer than the entire day. My lens rests upon a temporary sandbar that will soon erode from the passing stream. Later, the winds will carry the sand back to the dunes to create another stunning mound of sand for hikers and photographers alike to enjoy.
