As we traverse the final phases of maximum raw information accumulation, potentially equipping us for jacking in to the promise of the Singularity, the contents of many lifetimes’ worth of knowledge, art, education, and history are now at our fingertips. More and more Universities, libraries and arts institutions have swung open their digital doors and granted access to their lectures, courses and curricula free of charge to anyone in the world with a connection to the web. Access to education is fundamentally shifting our society towards

deeply inspired me after a screening last week. The life wisdom and positive
philosophy unfolding over a lifetime of living as an artist was deeply motivating.
I invited Wayne White, the subject of this documentary, to join deviantART afterwards.
I thought this would be something you would enjoy no matter where you might be at
on your own personal journey as an artist. While watching this I was also reminded

Humans Becoming Robots, Robots Becoming HumanOn March 1, 2012 the Nevada DMV issued the first license for a “Google Driverless Car.” The idea behind this innovation is that one day soon new technology will drive cars safer and more skillfully than humans, thus saving lives and billions of dollars in car crashes. How well this idea catches on is a bit questionable, given the powerful “romance” of driving one’s car, but it’s certainly an indicator of things to come in the daily intersection of human and artificial intelligence and mobility. There have always been those who have dreamed of stepping into a mechanical exo-skeletal-type “suit” and letting the engineering do the work, instantly increasing limited human speed, strength, endurance and accuracy.Humans Becoming Robots, Robots Becoming Human in deviantART Blog More Like This

The Enduring Enigma of CollageFebruary 21, 2013/by $techgnoticThe Enduring Enigma of Collage in deviantART Blog More Like This
Collage is one of those art forms that immediately sets off heated debate about our most fundamental ideas and visceral feelings about the very essence of art itself.
Turn of the century troublemakers Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso began enhancing their paintings with glued on bits of cut out fabric and other materials, thus neatly blurring the line between the art categories of painting and sculpture. They shifted the emphasis or “meaning” of their painted images beyond an attempted interpretation of the painted “text” to thinking about the artists’ “process” – something wholly separate from the paintings themselves.
And with that a whole new Rubic’s Cube of basic questions about art was opened up:
Is an assemblage of “found” junk

The most mundane, even off-putting, of objects is transformed by Duchamp into art. He submits it for exhibition and it is rejected. You might say the judges “pissed on” his idea. nearly all of them anchored in the apprehension of an impending cruel and unnatural death.

The argument for the nude in art:
Our visual perception of the human face and then the human body has set the basis since the beginning of
human history for our sense of what is beautiful and what initiates all our seminal ineffable sublime feelings
about the nature of love, life, desire, destiny, eternity, ad infinitum. The curvatures and symmetries of the
human body even lay the geometric basis for the artistic structures of all our art forms, not only for the visual
arts but also for literature and architecture. Given the primacy of the body as the beginning of all that we are
in life, and given the eye as the primary receiver for the collection of all information in our lives, how could
the artistic nude not be a massively represented art form on a global arts forum like deviantART? And besides,

Last year, our sponsorship of Artists' Alley was a huge success. We were able to provide a more comfortable environment for the artists, display their art on huge screens over the Alley, and let people attending the convention draw with deviantART muro on fantastic digital screens. We plan to do this and more in 2012 as we take on the great pleasure of sponsoring Artists' Alley at San Diego Comic-C

The team then offered artists on deviantART an opportunity to

Today, August 7th, 2012, marks 12 years since deviantART's creation - aka, it's our 12th birthday! In the last 12 years, we, as a community, have grown by leaps and bounds, fostered creative thought and dialogue, and submitted a lot of artwork - over 220 million deviations. It's with great honor and pleasure that we invite you to party with us as we toast to another devious year of art!
Introducing the First Ever Creative Grants Recipients!

PE Daily Deviations - So you want to suggest DDs?You're browsing deviantART or are simply checking your message centre and find a wonderful art piece. You want to suggest it as a Daily Deviation because you believe it truly deserves to be seen by the community as a whole. But how to properly suggest a DD? This article will explain the process.PE Daily Deviations - So you want to suggest DDs? in Projects More Like This
Things to check before sending a suggestion:
The first thing you need to check is if the artist has been given a Daily Deviation in the past 6 months. Volunteers cannot feature anyone who's had a DD in that period of time with no exceptions, as this has been hard-coded into deviantART's system.
"But how do I check an artist's Daily Deviations?" you may ask. Simply go to their gallery, click browse and scroll down. If they have any DDs, you'll be able to find a link to them at the bottom of the page. Alternatively, you can add "/dds" after their profile url and click enter on your browser's address bar.

Over the past few months, we've been diligently working on cleaning up the category tree of old and unused categories. While most of this will go unnoticed by the community, what you will notice is the change from "Miscellaneous" galleries to "Other". The reason for this change is simple. The concept of Miscellaneous leads one to believe that it's a junk drawer category for everything under the sun when the intention was to be an "Other" category for deviations that don't fit well in other sub-categories of the tree. We're also working on u

Charity: Water Starts the Process for the Well!I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who participated in the charity: water project I wrote about in February of this year. I got so many inspiring and heart-warming Notes from deviants far and wide -- from those who had just donated to those who had no means to donate monetarily but who happily spread the word to others. Many even selflessly pledged their own birthdays, asking for donations to this great cause in lieu of gifts. In a world where a lot of the news headlines are depressing and bleak, my faith in the power of good and caring was restored by the deviantART community.
Some say that one should participate in charity for charity's sake, and I fully believe this.

Now, I could use a wide net of input for message center revamp, but really I'd like to start with a narrow view of just deviantWATCH.
The deviantWATCH lives within Messages, which contains within it Feedback, Notices, etc. as well. deviantWATCH messages come in like crazy in your message center once you are watching 20+ people. And of the folks reading my Journal, I know you guys tend to have over 100+ people that you +WATCH.
Help me understand something. Because if we go off and make changes, we're going to have a riot on our hands. And no one needs that kind of sadness in their lives:
Why can't we switch to feeds?

Defining Street Photography
by Dave Beckerman
Most types of photography can be easily defined by their subjects. A wedding photographer takes pictures of weddings. A portrait photographer poses someone and takes their picture. The nature photographer covers a wide area, but it is easy to categorize.
Street photography is difficult to define because it can encompass just about any subject.
If I were to ask you to name a few famous street photographers, you might pick, Garry Winnograd, Henri Cartier-Bresson, or maybe Robert Frank. But if I asked you to define street photography – that would be more difficult. You might say that street photography is candid pictures of strangers on the street. That might be a good start, but it doesn’t really describe street photography.
To start with, street photography doesn’t need to be done on

Calling All Professionals and Organizations
DeviantART is getting a tremendous, positive response to our call for support for the application by DAdotART for the .ART domain.
We now have a special request for professional artists, art directors, creative directors, curators, educators and others employed directly in the arts to show their support in their professional capacities.
We also have a special request to members of the deviantART community who belong to organizations involved in the arts to submit an indication of support from the organization.
The idea of an address on the Internet ending in .ART is compelling to all of us in the arts. It would instantly verify an intention on the part of that location completely different than the intentions sh

This photo was taken before they surrounded the fountain in the background with plywood to protect it. The plywood became an important canvass, but the peice on the left with crazed Uncle Sams disappeared.

Seems to be president John F. Kennedy but I have no idea what that has to do with Occupy LA. He was, of course, part of the 1%.
Another side of the plywood wall. Rasta religious iconography has nothing to do with the Occupy movement that I can determine except that the smell of marijuana was pervasive on all of my

Shepard Fairey has been a special friend to deviantART. He contributed another one of his famous posters for marriage equality to a contest we held, "Love Unites," that encouraged deviants to remix his poster. He very generously gave us a layered file with all of the poster's elements. The results were spectacul

Andy Warhol let it happen. As the leading conduit of popular and unpopular culture in his time he presaged what we take to be commonplace today. Nothing good has been as edgy since Andy. In letting it happen he embraced it all. We may need a hundred years to catch up - - who's to know?
This "Thank You" to Andy hit the sidewalks along Melrose Ave in Los Angeles some months ago. The blue butterfly, added by another, I believe, is Andy Warhol iconography. It reminds us all of how much he contributed and of the vibrancy of his legacy, still thoroughly modern after all these years.
Someone scrawled onto this tribute the word "Jew" in yellow paint; in the same color of yellow demanded by the Nazi for the Stars of David forced to be worn by Jewish people as they were herded into the ghettos before th
The Bang Bang ClubYou have to see this movie about war photographers called “The Bang Bang Club.” For photographers, it’s a near perfect experience. The Bang Bang Club in Personal More Like This
The way photographers are shown in films follows the way in which any profession tends to be depicted in fiction - - usually as a caricature in a single dimension useful to the dramatic license taken out by the filmmaker.
The classic 1960 Federico Fellini movie “La Dolce Vita” introduced the paparazzi to the world stage and forever established a benchmark to the public’s perception of this type of news photographer as essentially a point and shoot automoton in the service of publicists. That view stuck no matter how brilliantly Weegee worked in this idiom with his sardonic exposures.
Here are Fellini’s paparazzi:
JOHN PAUL THORNTONThere's an article about John Paul Thornton posted in #HQ http://hq.deviantart.com/blog/45425672/ that I strongly recommend to those who watch my Journals.JOHN PAUL THORNTON in Personal More Like This
I've met Mr. Thornton and spoken with him a number of times in the past few years. He's a skilled traditional artist - - makes fine portraits. His deviantART pages speak for themselves:http://johnpaulthornton.deviantart.com/
But my impression of him goes very far beyond his physical product. This is a man who has made very interesting, determined and committed decisions towards the social purpose of his life and of applying his skills to effect good. He is worth keeping in mind for the example he sets for us all. He certainly has my thanks for the work that he has done.

The Watts Towers On An Overcast DayThe Watts Towers On An Overcast Day in Art Blogs & Mags More Like This
My brother-in-law came to visit Los Angeles last weekend and we wanted to show him the Watts Towers. I was disappointed that we went on an overcast day until I learned that even when the sun doesn't shine the Watts Towers hold their own.
The Watts Towers are certainly the most important work of art indigenous to the region. The Watts Towers are exhaustively documented including a conservation project with over 5000 images recording every tile and every placement. On other visits I didn't take a single photograph.
But this time on my fifth or sixth visit I found myself taking shots just for the pure pleasure of acting with the artwork.
