Weep, weep, O Walsingham!
Whose days are nights;
Blessings turn'd to blasphemies
Holy deeds to despites.
Sin is where Our Lady sat;
Heaven is turned to Hell!
Satan sits where Our Lord did sway;
Walsingham! O farewell!

(This is a 16th century poem I found in Carolly Erickson's biography "Bloody Mary". Walsingham is an English pilgrimage site that was destroyed during the Reformation. The poem reflects the feelings of the Catholic people of that time, and perhaps also what Mary thought.)

Miladies and gentlemen, I present you "Bloody Mary"! :D My 7th portrait in my series of Tudor Queens.

Born in 1516 as daughter of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon, Mary Tudor was raised to become Queen of England, just in case. Henry's male heirs indeed were short-lived, and his son Edward, after having ruled as Protestant king, died aged fifteen in 1553. Now it was Mary's turn and she became Queen the same year, at the age of 37. She was a devout Catholic and believed it was her mission to restore England to Catholicism. Which of course was pretty much impossible - one can't stop history once it has started. Until her death in 1558, about 280 Protestant "heretics" were condemned to death. (Source: Wikipedia)

There are several portraits of Mary dating from her time, of which the best known probably are these:
[link] - painted by Master John in 1544
[link] - painted by Antonio Moro in 1555
As you can see I chose to paint her wearing the dress from the earlier painting when she wasn't Queen yet, simply because I like it more
I'm still wondering about her eyebrows or lack thereof. Was there a fashion of plucking them out, or did Mary have some nutritional deficiency?

Like some symbolism with that painting? :) Here goes: The statuette of the Virgin Mary in the background is her name patron, obviously, and the blood red color of the tapestry also was a conscious choice.

Tool: Photoshop 7 & Wacom tablet. Statue referenced from a work by Tilman Riemenschneider. Carpet and wooden panels from cgtextures.com .

Basically, I just wanted to paint an awesome old room with lots of awesome old stuff in it. It's the most time consuming painting I made this year; the sketch and line drawing alone took somewhere in the vicinity of 10 hours.

As you can see in the WIP steps-

[link]

- it started out as a Tintin fanart but I lost my fangirl spirit somewhere along the way. And now it's... well, this. :) This thing. With the Siamese cat from Marlinspike Hall, a window view of the Sant'Ambrogio chapel in Florence, and the lamp that hangs above my parents' dinner table, and maps of Syldavia and Borduria on the wall, and 1920s technical gadgets.

The dress is real, too. I bought it at Dawanda (the German/European equivalent of Etsy)

Medium: Photoshop and Wacom tablet, as always.

That was the first time I tried to draw full anatomy without using a reference. Now I've tried it again but with the help of Andrew Loomis! I think it's much better... :happybounce:

This is my entry for Disney's "Picture Yourself In Wonderland" contest. I've always loved Alice in Wonderland and I'm a Tim Burton fanatic so, it's been the best of both worlds for me.

The entire piece was digitally hand drawn and painted in Photoshop CS4.

I love the old "Dark Shadows" show - how could I not enter this contest? I'm so excited to see the movie! I know Johnny Depp will do Barnabas justice.

I had a few of you here suggest I enter this contest, and I thought it'd be fun as I loved the movie so much. Being a witchy woman, of course I pictured myself as the White Queen!

Despite my love of monsters, and scary things in general, I've always been terrified of the dark.
Even now I keep a light on in almost every room in the house, regardless of where I am, and I can't walk by a dark room without imagining horrifying creatures lurking just out of sight...

So for this contest, I wanted to depict my childhood fear of the dark, ever present and ready to wrap itself around my ankle if I was bold enough to get out of my bed during the night. These manifestations never seemed to have faces, or much form at all, but I would imagine glowing eyes and grasping claws reaching up from the shadows behind and under the bed. So I would assign a brigade of stuffed creatures to stand guard on my bed at night (such as my dragon here) to keep a lookout while I slept... though they weren't always successful in keeping my fears at bay.

This is a picture for the contest Tomb Raider Reborn.
For me this is really a legendary game. I admire Lara Croft from childhood. The new game has opened for all of us a new girl, not just the beautiful and courageous heroine, it is now vulnerable, humane, we see in the game scene as Lara fights his fear, finds a new side character.
I painted a scene of falling. When fighting enemies, she falls into the abyss, and fade in the air for a moment, she sees a beautiful bird and understands how it's a great time, she even forgot that it can break, it felt like a bird reborn in this moment.
Software: Photoshop CS5, Corel Painter XI
Thanks for the comments and favs dear friends:iconsweethugplz:

It's been a long, long time since I've submitted anything, but when I saw this contest, I knew I had to enter it for my wonderful girlfriend :iconb-b-bunny: --she's the inspiration behind the work. She loves Dr. Pepper and actually got me hooked on it, hence the title. Thanks, Hunny Bunny. :)

About the work itself: I've always admired well done graffiti artwork and wanted to try my hand at rendering something done in that visual style. This contest was a great opportunity to experiment with it and try to incorporate it into my art style. I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

Anyhow, hope you kiddos dig it. :)

Btw, you can check out a progression/mock-up over yonder:

First off, lemme chime in, along with everyone else and their mom, that the new Tomb Raider is an amazing work of art. You can clearly tell that Crystal Dynamics poured their heart and soul into this labor of love. It's been a while since I've played something this good; if you haven't played it yet, go play it now!

So yeah, this has been one long-ass month of staying up til 2~4am most nights to work on this after I get out of work. I lost track of how many hours it took, but my slow ass took over 100 hours to work and rework the pose, angle, background, lighting, and details and I still feel like I could keep working on this for another week or more. In the end though, I'm really happy with the result; definitely one of my best works and hopefully a worthy homage to the awesomeness of the new Lara. :)

I tried to make the literal theme of ascension cool-looking (Lara fearlessly rock climbing in a beautiful/dangerous environment) while keeping the figurative theme of ascension subtle (Lara's struggle through Hell to reach salvation above) so that it wouldn't come off hammy. I also wanted to prominently feature the storm in the background because it played such an important role in the story, as well as to add an overall sense of impending doom/urgency to the image.

Oh, and btw, the climbing axe: most awesome piece of equipment ever.

Hope ya dig. :D

Bring color to this dreary world!

After checking out the splatter-fest videos on the Adidas contest page (which looked pretty awesome), I wanted to go for something that incorporated the elements found in those videos. I wanted something fun, dynamic, evoking lots of energy and of course something with lots of paints and colors. Adidas is a brand known for its athletic gear so, after much thought, I settled on the idea of an athletic girl in Adidas garb running down a dreary corridor bringing color, fun, and excitement with her in the celebratory spirit found in the Adidas finger painting clips.

This particular image went through tons of revisions and it was grueling work to get it to look right because the angle is so skewed. It's a little rough around the edges, but I think the look lends itself well to the wild nature I was going for. I'm pretty satisfied with the result. Hope you kids like. :)

My entry to the Dark Shadows contest. Just under the wire. :)

This is actually my first time entering a dA contest! I definitely don't expect to place or anything, it was fun to do and right up my alley. Digital painting done in Adobe Photoshop CS5 with a Wacom tablet. Good luck to everyone who also submitted!

EDIT 4/28/12 - I appreciate all your indignant comments about how I didn't make the semi-finals, but I actually am NOT eligible to place as a deviantART Community Volunteer, so there's no need for any of that! It's in the fine print somewhere, and I suspected as much - I entered just for fun! So please direct your heartiest congratulations to the wonderful entries that did make it! [link]

Here's my entry for the Tomb Raider contest! I wanted to do a classic portrait of Lara (it was surprisingly difficult to get her face & expression right!) that fans of the game would appreciate, and tried to convey some of the intensity she is known for using dynamic colors and brushstrokes. Seeing all the amazing entries so far almost got me discouraged - but, I had fun painting this and it's an honor to compete against so many great artists. Good luck to everyone who entered!

Drawn and painted from scratch in Adobe Photoshop with a Wacom Cintiq 21UX. No textures and no outside stock photography used for ref or otherwise. Done in approx a zillion hours. Full size 4800x6720px at 300DPI.

(I'm looking forward to getting this game for the PS3!)

EDIT: I wanted to share a wonderful comment from someone who played the game and was able to relate to this artwork (shared with the permission of ~King-o-Fools :)) "Though after playing the game, I don't interpret your dynamic brushstrokes and colors as Lara's intensity: If you haven't played the game yet I won't spoil anything, but its an "Origin Story". When you play it you'll understand, but I see your swirling brushstrokes like they're enveloping HER, like how she's forced to deal with the chaotic situation she's been thrown into. The blues make me think of the ocean water (since she's trapped on an island) yet also lead back to oh-so-innocent Lara and her blue shirt. The Black and reds portray the darker and more gruesome side of the storyline as well as a literal interpretation for blood which would relate to her experience with death in general." I really appreciated this commentary since it is exactly what I was going for!

Thank you so much to everyone else who commented too, I appreciate your support and am thrilled to be in the semi-finals!

So! My entry for the Skribble contest. :fella:
It was really hard to come up with something that would use the shapes from the template in the main composition rather than in a detail (the more that one person snatched my first idea just before I started to work on it :XD:). Hope you like it!

Happy birthday dA.
Even though I bitch a lot, it's been an amazing 11 years on your side and over 6 years of great fun for me.

Yep. The handsome Mr Jackalope was in fact a remake of one of my oldest drawings posted here on dA.

It's been 4 years and I've learned A LOT. And honestly? I've learned most of it by watching much better artists than me here on dA.
I got better not only in terms of technique but also in how I look at the world, how I form and execute my ideas, and how I keep aiming higher to get better. There's still a long way ahead of me, but I'm not going to give up.

Beware all you super-cool ultra-drawing people on dA! I'm going to reach your level one day!
