Spotlight Features - Vol. 15

Sat Nov 17, 2012, 9:38 AM

A news series featuring art selected by me. There will be a wide range of themes and genres covered. In addition, there will be periodic interviews and artist spotlights.

:+fav: If you like this article, please add it to your favorites to help spread the love for the art and artists within.

Daily Features

On my profile page, I feature a new deviation every day (or two or three). The piece is usually something that caught my eye. Could be an amazing digital painting, a fun stamp, a quick photograph that made me smile, perhaps a piece for a weekly theme, whatever.  However, it moved me enough to share it with my visitors. Below is a list of the artists which I featured during October 2012. I am showcasing different pieces from their gallery in the hope of showing them a bit more love. If you would like to see the original piece I featured of each of these artists, please visit this folder.

When I'm gone, I will come back to you in a myriad of things. From my flesh there will be grass, from my bones there will be trees. I will be there in the earth, in the sunshine, in the sea. Countless grains of me will tango with the snowflakes in the wind, mingling with your hair, caressing your skin. The butterfly that grazed your fingertip, that is where I will be. The deer that escaped from the corner of your vision, that too was me. I will be at the edge of the sky and at the corners of the earth. Look, and you will find me here, there, and everywhere.

Hush. Do you hear the swooshing gentle waves? That is my murmur. And the whispering leaves as they sway? That is my calling back to you. My voice may be wordless and I may no longer speak your language, but the sound I make will resonate with the strumming of your heartstrings. Call my name and you will h

Spotlight Interview

In this series, I hope to introduce the community to some artists who have been around dA for a while, but are still relativity unknown. The interviews are meant to be short and sweet. I encourage you to check out the artist's full gallery and add them to your devWatch.

:iconniraven: -- This issue, we talk to digital artist, Niraven

:bulletwhite: Could you introduce yourself and tell us a little about yourself and your dA life? (You can use this question to plug any groups or off-dA projects you may have.)

I'm Niraven, aka Tawny to some. I'm a self-taught artist and joined dA 5 years ago. I'm not actively involved in any major clubs or so, but over the years I've built up a nice little network here and visit almost everyday.

:bulletwhite: What would you say your main artform is? Secondary?

I'd say my main artform is actually traditional, and my second is digital coloring/painting. I'd call traditional my first because, unknown to many, I actually draw out all my linework by hand and scan it before I color an artwork digitally. As vibrant as the digital artwork is, and even though it's the main featured art form in my gallery, you will find 400x more traditional artwork around my actual workplace.

:bulletwhite: When did you start pursuing your art? What prompted you to?

Art's been a part of my life ever since I was born, and it was something that was recognized, encouraged, and thus pursued from a young age in one form or another. I actually come from a line of traditional painters on both sides of my family. Though there was no pressure to actually pursue art, it's always been a passion of mine. I started working with digital art around 8 years ago and started taking commissions regularly about 4 years ago. Telling me to live a life without creating artwork is like telling me not to breathe.

:bulletwhite: What is your favorite piece in your gallery at the moment?

The Ancient Power by Niraven
This is actually also one of my newest artworks, too. I spent more time on this than any artwork to date and really wanted to bring it to life.

:bulletwhite: In general, what is your favorite thing to create (i.e. fan-art, poetry, etc) ?

Fan art is fun, but my favorite is depicting darker characters and concepts-- whether they're original, fan-made, etc. I like the edginess and it reflects my personality and many of my passions as well.

:bulletwhite: Just for fun question: What is your favorite movie?

Now that's a tough question. If I had to pick one, I'd actually have to pick a handful. My favorites include Wall-E, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, James Cameron's Avatar, Shaun of the Dead, The Addams Family, and The World's Fastest Indian.

:bulletwhite: Time to spread the love. Who are 3 artists you feel could use more love? Tell us why you love them. (please select one piece from each of the artist's gallery and send me the thumb)

:iconikaruga-riku: Siobhan and Shaddai ATC Commission by Ikaruga-Riku
Ikaruga-Riku (alt. account Purgatory-Maren) is an incredibly talented traditional artist I met years ago on a games forum, who became one of my best friends. He mainly does ATC- Artist Trading Card commissions (the originals of which are sent to commissionees), and could use a lot more love. Seeing how fine his detail work is and how much he brings characters to life in person is amazing.

:iconideya-freak: Na'ima by Ideya-Freak
Ideya-Freak is another close friend I met via a games forum originally. I've watched her grow and her art improve so much over the years we've known each other. She's also predominantly a traditional artist who uses colored pencils. Her blending is absolutely incredible.

:iconesakris: Poison-type Unova Gym Leader. by EsaKris
Another deviant who has become a dear friend of mine. I've watched EsaKris go from basic traditional work to very clean and professional digital work in just a couple years. She could always use more recognition.

:bulletwhite: Final words?
Yes. Go give my friends' pages a look and give them some love and commissions. :D

:bulletwhite: Some of my picks from :devniraven's gallery:

It's in the Blood by Niraven Chibi Faheem by Niraven Tranquil Evenings by Niraven

Themed Feature

A friend and I were talking about designing original characters and the fact that there are only so many hair colors, eye colors, and general appearance traits, that most characters are going to resemble another character somewhere. The character we were specifically discussing has black wavy hair. So, with that on my mind, that's the theme of this weeks search feature.

Relativity Contest - Great Prizes!

Fri Sep 14, 2012, 7:38 AM

RELATIVITY_The heroes by FranciscoETCHART

:happybounce: Ravenswd and I are proud to announce our 2nd annual Relativity contest!

The theme this year (overwhelmingly selected by our Watchers) is:

Your Original Character (OC) as a Hero or Villain in the Relativity Universe

Since this is a Relativity contest, simply drawing a picture of your OC as a superhero will not count.  You must incorporate something from Relativity into the piece.  Either another character from the universe or something that is a direct and obvious reference to the world.

ANY of the Relativity characters can be used.  That includes the characters  in or out of costume.  Supporting characters or villains may also be used.

A full list of characters, profile sheets, and references can be found in the RelativityComic Group here ---> relativitycomic.deviantart.com…

Your character can be, but doesn't have to be, a costumed hero or villain.  Your OC could be a heroic cop on the police force or a regular citizen who rises to the occasion to help the heroes solve a crime.  Those are just examples,
so use your imagination.

Note: We prefer contestants creatively use an existing OC for the contest.  However, since many may not have an OC that would work, you may create a new OC just for the contest.

There will be three categories:

1. Traditional/Digital -- This is the broadest category and pretty much includes everything from sketches to photo-manipulation.   This also includes artisan crafts, etc.

2. Pixel - This includes dolling, emoticons, and general pixelling.  Honestly, this category is here because we are pixel-artists and we want to give our compatriots an even competing field.

3. Literature - Self Explanatory.  Stories should be limited to 5000 words.  Poetry will be accepted.

Each category will have a winner and a runner-up.  There will also be a grand-prize "Best of Show" entry which can be from any of the three categories.

:bulletblue: Artwork must be new and created on or after August 5, 2012.

:bulletblue: You MUST mention the contest and link back to this page in your Artist's Notes.

:bulletblue: Submissions should be submitted to this Group folder.  You do not have to be a member of the group to submit.  ---> relativitycomic.deviantart.com…

:bulletblue: All entries must be PG-13 or better. Granted, we don't mind something a bit more mature, as the series is definitely on the grittier side.  But overly graphic or revealing pieces will not be accepted.  (i.e. suggested sex is okay--graphic sex, no, and keep any possible gore on
the tame side)

:bulletblue: Original Fan Characters ARE allowed, as long as they are stand-alone.  Meaning, if you have a character you made for the Batman universe, that is acceptable, but you simply cannot bring Batman into the story--just your Fan OC.

:bulletblue: You can use as many of the Relativity characters as you like.  Meaning you can use 1 (such as just Overcast) or all of them.

:bulletblue: You can enter up to three times, in one or multiple categories.  However, you will only be eligible to win once, overall.

:bulletblue: Deadline is 11:59pm October 22, 2012. There will be no further extensions.

Quick Info about Relativity

:bulletblack: In an effort to help those not familiar with Relativity, here is a cheatsheet with information on the series and main characters ---> mirz-alt.deviantart.com/journa…

:bulletblack: We have also been creating super-condensed, full synopsis of each episode.  This will allow readers to get acquainted with the events of the stories if they do not have time to read the full versions.  You can find the first 4 episodes here and the rest of the episodes will be added shortly ---> relativitycomic.deviantart.com…

Each category will have the following winners/prizes:

Relativity Contest Stamp 1 by mirz-alt Relativity Contest Stamp 2 by Mirz123

:bulletblack: How your OC is involved is up to you.  We love creativity. Some examples of possible ideas include: Your OC meeting with a Team Torrent character to solve a crime. Perhaps your OC falls in love with one of the heroes.  Or maybe your OC has a grudge against Black Torrent and
decides villainy is the way to go.

:bulletblack: We are big on story, so quality of art is good, but we will be looking at how it all ties together.

:bulletblack: Any questions should be posted to the comments here and we'll try to answer them as best we can.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

I tweeted today that I could feel the "depression monster" sneaking up on me. That got me thinking of how I could pixel it. Then I remember the current EMTC theme was "monsters", so there you go. [link]

Probably one of the scariest, real-life monsters. Depression can impact our lives in so many ways. Anyhow...

Depression isn't very positive, so I won't write any more, but perhaps a few people will be able to relate to this.

I have long admired this meme, and in fact, it inspired me to do a slightly similar meme here ---> [link] . Anyhow, I still love this meme since I love having an excuse to talk about my OCs. But I didn't feel I had good enough art to post on it. Then, recently, I saw someone had completed it using their commissions, so I thought "why not."

About my choices...

:bulletblack: Oldest: Sara Wolff. I was 19 when she was created (23 years ago)

:bulletblack: Newest: Vera Barricuda. She was mentioned in passing, but recently gave her a look and development

:bulletblack: Nice: Melody. She is very nice, and not nearly as shy as Sara.

:bulletblack: Naughty: Martin Bling. Womanizer, gambling magnate, plus there's much more to this "snake oil salesman."

:bulletblack: Surprising: We never, ever thought Ravenswood would end up a sexy beast who would give Torrent a run for his money with fan-girls (and boys).

:bulletblack: Conventional: Billionaire, playboy, who has a new girlfriend every few weeks. Um, yeah. But there's some twists to this one.

:bulletblack: Easy to Create: Relatively. Michael/Torrent really wrote himself.

:bulletblack: Difficult: Even though this character was created years ago for an RP, re-imagining him for Relativity nearly killed me, and put me in a several month art block!

:bulletblack: Preferred Deviation: Such a personal piece in and out of the story.

:bulletblack: Failed: A technically well done and beautiful picture, but just sexified the females characters too much, which didn't suit them. My fault for not articulating to the artist well enough.

:bulletblack: Single Character: SparklyDeath by `SparklyDest. Man, that vampire is hot stuff. I may not have created her, but glad I know her.

:bulletblack: Duo: Vondel and Aralyn by =PiccolaRia. Not really a couple, but certainly a pair and..oof...what a story. So jelly I didn't create them.

Original art with artist credits can be found in my favorites.</b>

Original meme by the very sweet *Feliane. You should really check out her gallery.

Well, in the grand scheme of catch-phrases, this one is archaic by internet standards, but it's still one of the best ones.

This is a fan-art stamp of Homey the Clown, a character created by Daman Wayans and who personified angst. It was a great regular skit on "In Living Color", a MAD TV type show that spawn the likes of David Alan Grier and Jim Carrey.

Anyhow, this is one of my favorite phrases and I have been meaning to do a stamp of it forever.

If you want to see Homey in action, check out here ---> [link]

Also a PLZ sign, which you can find in my Scraps:

:bulletblue: You can find more of my stamps in this folder ---> [link]

*** Homey/In Living Color are Ivory Way Productions, in association with 20th Century Fox Television (which are NOT me). This piece is created purely in a fan-art, parody capacity. ***

:happybounce: You do NOT need a subscription to use this stamp. Due to dA changes, you can now use it in your journal or ID box, even if you are not a pay-member. Simply cut-and-paste the thumbcode into your journal and you'll post the stamp!!

*** Terms of Usage ***
As with most of my pixel work, you may use this on and off deviantART, without my permission. The only thing I ask is that you keep the file name in tact and don't remove any credit information. Also, if you use, let me know as it encourages me to make more free-use art.

This image is now available for limited commercial use. You may not re-distribute or sell this image. However, it may be used as site decoration, such as on forums, in chats, or in a similar manner. Please see [link] (this page) for full details.

As part of *Ravenswd's birthday, I ordered a few commissions for him. This was the one I was really looking forward to. A romantic picture of his/our OCs, Ravenswood and his wife, Melody. Gosh, I love this couple, they are so hot. And it's even sexier that they are married. :eyes:

Anyhow, hope you all like it (and hope *Ravenswd likes it, too).
