Relativity Contest - Great Prizes!

Fri Sep 14, 2012, 7:38 AM

RELATIVITY_The heroes by FranciscoETCHART

:happybounce: Ravenswd and I are proud to announce our 2nd annual Relativity contest!

The theme this year (overwhelmingly selected by our Watchers) is:

Your Original Character (OC) as a Hero or Villain in the Relativity Universe

Since this is a Relativity contest, simply drawing a picture of your OC as a superhero will not count.  You must incorporate something from Relativity into the piece.  Either another character from the universe or something that is a direct and obvious reference to the world.

ANY of the Relativity characters can be used.  That includes the characters  in or out of costume.  Supporting characters or villains may also be used.

A full list of characters, profile sheets, and references can be found in the RelativityComic Group here ---> relativitycomic.deviantart.com…

Your character can be, but doesn't have to be, a costumed hero or villain.  Your OC could be a heroic cop on the police force or a regular citizen who rises to the occasion to help the heroes solve a crime.  Those are just examples,
so use your imagination.

Note: We prefer contestants creatively use an existing OC for the contest.  However, since many may not have an OC that would work, you may create a new OC just for the contest.

There will be three categories:

1. Traditional/Digital -- This is the broadest category and pretty much includes everything from sketches to photo-manipulation.   This also includes artisan crafts, etc.

2. Pixel - This includes dolling, emoticons, and general pixelling.  Honestly, this category is here because we are pixel-artists and we want to give our compatriots an even competing field.

3. Literature - Self Explanatory.  Stories should be limited to 5000 words.  Poetry will be accepted.

Each category will have a winner and a runner-up.  There will also be a grand-prize "Best of Show" entry which can be from any of the three categories.

:bulletblue: Artwork must be new and created on or after August 5, 2012.

:bulletblue: You MUST mention the contest and link back to this page in your Artist's Notes.

:bulletblue: Submissions should be submitted to this Group folder.  You do not have to be a member of the group to submit.  ---> relativitycomic.deviantart.com…

:bulletblue: All entries must be PG-13 or better. Granted, we don't mind something a bit more mature, as the series is definitely on the grittier side.  But overly graphic or revealing pieces will not be accepted.  (i.e. suggested sex is okay--graphic sex, no, and keep any possible gore on
the tame side)

:bulletblue: Original Fan Characters ARE allowed, as long as they are stand-alone.  Meaning, if you have a character you made for the Batman universe, that is acceptable, but you simply cannot bring Batman into the story--just your Fan OC.

:bulletblue: You can use as many of the Relativity characters as you like.  Meaning you can use 1 (such as just Overcast) or all of them.

:bulletblue: You can enter up to three times, in one or multiple categories.  However, you will only be eligible to win once, overall.

:bulletblue: Deadline is 11:59pm October 22, 2012. There will be no further extensions.

Quick Info about Relativity

:bulletblack: In an effort to help those not familiar with Relativity, here is a cheatsheet with information on the series and main characters ---> mirz-alt.deviantart.com/journa…

:bulletblack: We have also been creating super-condensed, full synopsis of each episode.  This will allow readers to get acquainted with the events of the stories if they do not have time to read the full versions.  You can find the first 4 episodes here and the rest of the episodes will be added shortly ---> relativitycomic.deviantart.com…

Each category will have the following winners/prizes:

Relativity Contest Stamp 1 by mirz-alt Relativity Contest Stamp 2 by Mirz123

:bulletblack: How your OC is involved is up to you.  We love creativity. Some examples of possible ideas include: Your OC meeting with a Team Torrent character to solve a crime. Perhaps your OC falls in love with one of the heroes.  Or maybe your OC has a grudge against Black Torrent and
decides villainy is the way to go.

:bulletblack: We are big on story, so quality of art is good, but we will be looking at how it all ties together.

:bulletblack: Any questions should be posted to the comments here and we'll try to answer them as best we can.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

Relativity Contest Winners

Journal Entry: Wed Nov 7, 2012, 4:45 AM

Finally...

Commission: Heroes by DavidAdhinaryaLojaya

Ravenswd and I are happy to announce the winners of the 2nd annual Relativity contest.  This year's theme was "Your OC as a hero or villain in the Relativity universe."

:bulletblue: If you like this article, please consider :+fav: faving it so that others can find these artists and their works.

It seems a common thing for contest hosts to complain about the difficulty in judging.  That's because it's hard! And this contest was no exception.  Lovely art, wonderful words, and great ideas. With so many diverse entries, we had to pick one criteria to use as the main judging point.  That was story.  More importantly: Who did we want to know more about. Which pieces piqued our interest and made us want to know what happened next.  With that in mind, we announce the winners...

Pixel

As pixel artists, we opened this special category since pixels sometimes struggle against more traditional digital art. Sadly, however, we got very few entries and will probably eliminate this category next year. In the meantime, we did get several wonderful entries.

Silver Trophy by mirzjiles Runner-Up

Another Relativity Contest Entry by Avis-Hope

We thought it was great that the artist created a base of their own for this piece. Nicely pixelled and the story was cute.

Gold Trophy by mirzjiles Winner:

:thumb326272977:

Seeing a humanized version of the artist's OC (which is normally an emote platypus) was quite fun. Seeing him hooked up with Melody was awesome. The pixelling is great, too.

Digital

This category had so many close entries.  Seriously, we could have had 5-6 winners.  As it was, we wanted to give an Honorable Mention which will receive 100 points and a feature in the upcoming special winners-feature article.

Bismuth Trophy by mirzjiles Honorable Mention:

Relativity Contest Entry by ArtFairy132

We both adored the character of Emmy. We could definitely see her as a kid at the Gale Home and totally wanted to know more about her character. As for the actual art, the stylized cartoon is simple adorable. Dark Flame looks worried, but Emmy is beaming with confidence.

Silver Trophy by mirzjiles Runner-Up

Sunshine and Black Torrent by Know-Kname

I want to read this comic! The idea of these two teaming up to rescue their sidekicks was too fun to pass up.  The art is stylized and great--the two look amazing. I have to tell you, I'm tempted to write this story myself just to see what happens next, which says a lot.

Gold Trophy by mirzjiles Winner:

The Scarlett Illusion has Sarah by dragondoodle

The setup, the art, the whole shebang! We loved the idea of a vixen stalking the rich powerful men of Gale, and disguising herself as Sara. The author's mini-scene in the comments really showed it was well thought-out and tied it all together. Art-wise, the smug expression on the villain's face and Sara's defiance is perfect. We totally want to see what happens next!

Literature

Another close category to judge! Note that both of these entries have a mature filter.  Both placed the non-restrictive warning on their piece for some sensitive issues and mild gore. Both are well within the PG-13 rating mandated by the contest.

Silver Trophy by mirzjiles Runner-Up

The character of Leo Solaris was quite intriguing. Even though the Team Torrent characters were a bit off in personality, overall it was well written and done. We found ourselves engaged in the story and wanted to know more about how this character would fit into Gale City and the Relativity world.

Gold Trophy by mirzjiles Winner:

What we loved about this story is that it read like a real Relativity episode. The narrative was well written and flowed nicely. The author's character fit well into the universe and she crafted an intriguing story that sucked us in. Her use of the Relativity heroes and a villain worked. The cliffhanger ending was a bit of a disappointment, but it had us clamoring for more.

Best of Show

A 'Relativity' Affair by CristianaLeone

This entry had all of the key elements: Beautiful art, attention to detail, comic book styling, and a story that made us wonder how the heck the characters got into that situation! Using both a hero and a villain OC, we like how she wove them both into the Relativity world.  Of course, you can't overlook the gorgeous picture.  A lovely incorporation of the characters into the universe!  A wonderful job by CristianaLeone.

Other Entries

As is our practice, we like to also showcase the other entries and give some of our commentary.  Each contestant will receive 50 points each from us as a participation prize.

Hellion - Relativity by HeroforPain

This piece is stunning. I really love how the artist managed to subtly add the Relativity crew into it. I was really intrigued by this premise and would love to see more.  This was one of those pieces that vied heavily for a winning spot--and made us wish we had several more places to win.

Black + Lavender**This story is an fanfiction contest entry of Relativity, an ongoing series. While it can be read independently, it assumes the reader has general knowledge of the main characters and settings. This story is set in the Relativity timeline sometime before the storyline of "Cotillion". A link to the contest can be found in the artists' notes below. **
Michael Bruce looked around the room at the party he'd hosted to celebrate the coming of the daughter of one of his biggest competitors. He didn't know her business in the United States, just that she'd booked a penthouse in Gale City, and had agreed to come to the shindig. He hoped to make a favorable first impression, especially if she was in town to do some business. It was too early for her to be fashionably late, but the other guests had arrived, and seemed to be enjoying themselves. Melody and Ravenswood were laughing at some joke with another couple in the corner.
When the mid-twenties beauty walked in, she became the Ch

This piece was pretty much neck and neck with the Runner Up in the Lit category. It's a classic tale with interesting characters. The Relativity characters were well-portrayed, very much reflective of their personalities. We liked all the information about how superheroes would work internationally. We could easily see Sasha being a part of the Relativity Universe.

Jewel Thief by Captain-Savvy

Another contender to place. We loved the idea of a crafty Sybil stealing candy gems from the kids. The art is great and I love how Dark Flame looks in this. We would so love to read the story behind this.

Relativity contest Entry by CL-Pinkskull

Another close one! I really loved the comic-book styling of this piece. So much fun, and Dark Flame looks great. The OC of the artist looks great and I could see her fitting into the Gale City heroes. Would love to see a story between these two!

:thumb332410442:

It was neat and fun that the author chose poetry to tell the tale. Also interesting how they managed to work in several of the characters, in and out of costume. The imagery was great and really set the mood.

:thumb323904642:

This one has a great premise and a fun ending. It was an interesting choice to pair Dark Flame up with Hell's Razor. The story was intriguing and we'd really like to see the lead-up.

Crossover Contest Entry by Scarydestiny

The idea of a character feeling lonely and attaching himself on to a group because of looks (and thus fitting in) was really neat.  The artists really made Melody look great here--she doesn't get nearly enough love.  A very interesting OC we would love to learn more about.

Poor Babs didn't fare well in the two entries she appeared in. I really liked the idea of this character being confused and out of place. The author crafted a neat story with a twist. I would be totally interested to see what happened next.

Contest - Comic Cover -Full- by Kawaii-Nekochara Contest - Comic Book 2 by Kawaii-Nekochara

Though not really within the theme of the contest, it was neat to see Relativity transformed into a "real" comic. Nice work.

Relativity Contest Entry by Avis-Hope

Another entry by the winner of the Runner-Up in the pixel category (no extra points will be awarded for this entry).

Thank You!

We would like to congratulate all of the winners! We'd also like to extend a hearty thank you to all of the contestants. We appreciate your taking time to create for our contest.  We'd also like to thank the many deviants who supported and promoted the contest, as well as those who followed the entries and gave their commentary.

Well, in the grand scheme of catch-phrases, this one is archaic by internet standards, but it's still one of the best ones.

This is a fan-art stamp of Homey the Clown, a character created by Daman Wayans and who personified angst. It was a great regular skit on "In Living Color", a MAD TV type show that spawn the likes of David Alan Grier and Jim Carrey.

Anyhow, this is one of my favorite phrases and I have been meaning to do a stamp of it forever.

If you want to see Homey in action, check out here ---> [link]

Also a PLZ sign, which you can find in my Scraps:

:bulletblue: You can find more of my stamps in this folder ---> [link]

*** Homey/In Living Color are Ivory Way Productions, in association with 20th Century Fox Television (which are NOT me). This piece is created purely in a fan-art, parody capacity. ***

This is a re-do of the Martin Bling portrait I did a year ago. I was never happy with how it looked and wanted to re-vamp it, but never had the time before. I really wanted the face to match the full-size doll and finally got it. Though, admittedly, I don't think my skill back then could have pulled it off, so it's probably just as well it took me all this time to update it. :D

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About the character:
This is Martin Bling. He's ungodly rich and a total ladies man. And he's as crooked as they come. :eyes:
Bling is an interesting creation as he really is 2-3 characters from our past writing, rolled into one. He was directly created to replace a senator character who appeared in the first Dark Flame story (years before we RPGed or anything like that). But as time went on, he evolved into something a bit more. He's one of my favorite sleazebags in the series. :giggle:
Dolling wise, I ended up totally re-drawing the head from scratch. Because it scope was larger, I had to broaden the base to make the proportions work. Though, admittedly, it's still a bit wonky. :blushes:
Base by ~kami-bases. Heavy edit by me. You can see the original in my Scraps. [link]
Last week I uploaded a theme song that *Ravenswd and I had created for our fiction serial. It was deliberately supposed to be short as it was a mock-up for the opening sequence of a television show. However, we always meant to do something longer. So, all week I was working it out in my head and we sat down and did an extended track this weekend. We're pretty proud of this.
Note that we have a few people working on other Relativity pieces. We just like the idea of having some music. Eventually we hope to get some theme music for the core characters.
Once we get a few pieces of music we like, our hope is to eventually hire someone to do a more formal sounding version with a more realistic orchestral sound. But, of course, that will be a while, when finances allow.
Aside from my other novel series project the Chronicles of Loreithia (LoreithianChronicles ) I had some other novel ideas in the works. Lacrimosa started out as a collaboration with a friend but I decided I would continue to work on it here and there. The original title I wanted for it was either ‘Fallen’ or ‘Forsakened’, but Fallen is already taken by Lauren Kate and I kind of wanted something better than just ‘Forsakened’. In Latin the word Lacrimosa means weeping, as to cry.
Lacrimosa will be a lot different to my fantasy story in LoreithianChronicles as it will be set in modern day earth, however the world would be a lot darker and would have a stark comparison. It’s set in a sort of Gothic Victorian era and everyone has to fight for their lives every day, only the rich and powerful have standards of comfortable living.
The title character Victoria, is a lost fallen angel who has lost her memory and on earth tries to find her way back to heavens arms and on the way finds the truths about herself and her creation and has a romance with someone who doesn’t seem to be what he appears to be.
This novel project like my others is a work in progress, I just wanted to see what would look good as the project cover and if I ever self-publish.. perhaps this could be it’s cover?
She took her first breath, without even knowing of what her future held.  Through her innocent eyes, she saw the world as it should be. Bright and happy, born into a world that cherishes her every awaking moment. She was held by the caring embrace of her mother’s arms, warm and safe and eager to explore the world and all it has to offer.  Life has begun.
Though in desperate and dark times, her mother continues to love and protect her with all her power.  But still, not everything was right in the world.  Chaos and sadness begins to break out all around her and all that she knew for just a moment was taken away in the blink of an eye.
Happiness was just a fleeting moment between mother and daughter, for everyone knew what the cost was of bringing a child into a world torn apart by greed.  The child’s father was not a kind man and hadn’t been for such a long time.  In his mind, he wanted power, but a simple wish in the wrong mind can turn into greed and greed can turn into evil unimaginable.
Though he could not kill his daughter when he first laid eyes upon her, despite his consciousness telling him to destroy her for she was the one who would stop him from gaining all that he wanted.  He simply banished her; thrown away like trash in the hope that the world itself would kill her and he wouldn’t have to after he had destroyed his son. But he could never follow through.
The child was distraught being torn apart from the loving arms of her mother and sentenced to live a life where she had to survive on her own for years on end.  All she knew was pain, sadness and fear, the struggle in which held her at bay and to never learn of the destiny she and those before her knew of which she would end her father’s tyranny and evil.
The child’s innocence was destroyed many times over and she always wondered what it would be like if none of this had ever happened to her, to actually live the life she wanted and to be with her mother who cared for her dearly.   She was alone and scared, forever tormented by those who wished to play a deadly and cruel game with her, treating her like she was nothing but a puppet or toy, even food once.
The child’s father over the years became more greedy and insane with the idea that he could have everything, growing ever more so powerful under the influence of a stronger evil.  An evil which told him many times over in order to have everything, he must sacrifice his daughter to him.  The very idea was insane.  But he had no choice; he came so far already... why stop now?
All she ever wanted was to be loved by a mother and father and to have a childhood, a childhood which had been stolen from her.  Neither the father nor the child herself will rest until one of them survives.
It is a game of cat and mouse, predator and prey and through it all no matter what she knew she would need to survive, she wanted to survive and be happy, to be reunited with her mother.
She will be the light in the darkness. She’ll be his destruction. One day.
There is still hope, no matter how much it seems out of reach.
There is still hope, with a child so innocent.
No matter how hard it would seem, she’ll lead the way.
Just need to light the flame of hope within her.
For a child can do a many wonderful things.
Come 6am this morning... the time where I actually want to go to bed and sleep after having been up all night. Inspiration strikes and an insane need to write about Luciana comes up. :stinkeye: It's not the first time this had happened.
Anyway I guess that's the thing about inspiration and muses.. That is the funny thing about inspiration muses... they show up when you least expect and don't wish to have them come but when you do want them to show up they are never around. :stare:
Anyway random writing is random, but still very much based upon my character Luciana. I don't know if it makes sense or not. :paranoid: The writing is very raw and doesn't flow like a real story should. However, you can see proper stories elsewhere in my gallery and my story group. I am currently working with two friends on two separate collaborations with Luciana and one should be ready soonish. :)
If you are interested in learning more about her and her story check out #LoreithianChronicles. :love:
