Relativity Contest - Great Prizes!

Fri Sep 14, 2012, 7:38 AM

RELATIVITY_The heroes by FranciscoETCHART

:happybounce: Ravenswd and I are proud to announce our 2nd annual Relativity contest!

The theme this year (overwhelmingly selected by our Watchers) is:

Your Original Character (OC) as a Hero or Villain in the Relativity Universe

Since this is a Relativity contest, simply drawing a picture of your OC as a superhero will not count.  You must incorporate something from Relativity into the piece.  Either another character from the universe or something that is a direct and obvious reference to the world.

ANY of the Relativity characters can be used.  That includes the characters  in or out of costume.  Supporting characters or villains may also be used.

A full list of characters, profile sheets, and references can be found in the RelativityComic Group here ---> relativitycomic.deviantart.com…

Your character can be, but doesn't have to be, a costumed hero or villain.  Your OC could be a heroic cop on the police force or a regular citizen who rises to the occasion to help the heroes solve a crime.  Those are just examples,
so use your imagination.

Note: We prefer contestants creatively use an existing OC for the contest.  However, since many may not have an OC that would work, you may create a new OC just for the contest.

There will be three categories:

1. Traditional/Digital -- This is the broadest category and pretty much includes everything from sketches to photo-manipulation.   This also includes artisan crafts, etc.

2. Pixel - This includes dolling, emoticons, and general pixelling.  Honestly, this category is here because we are pixel-artists and we want to give our compatriots an even competing field.

3. Literature - Self Explanatory.  Stories should be limited to 5000 words.  Poetry will be accepted.

Each category will have a winner and a runner-up.  There will also be a grand-prize "Best of Show" entry which can be from any of the three categories.

:bulletblue: Artwork must be new and created on or after August 5, 2012.

:bulletblue: You MUST mention the contest and link back to this page in your Artist's Notes.

:bulletblue: Submissions should be submitted to this Group folder.  You do not have to be a member of the group to submit.  ---> relativitycomic.deviantart.com…

:bulletblue: All entries must be PG-13 or better. Granted, we don't mind something a bit more mature, as the series is definitely on the grittier side.  But overly graphic or revealing pieces will not be accepted.  (i.e. suggested sex is okay--graphic sex, no, and keep any possible gore on
the tame side)

:bulletblue: Original Fan Characters ARE allowed, as long as they are stand-alone.  Meaning, if you have a character you made for the Batman universe, that is acceptable, but you simply cannot bring Batman into the story--just your Fan OC.

:bulletblue: You can use as many of the Relativity characters as you like.  Meaning you can use 1 (such as just Overcast) or all of them.

:bulletblue: You can enter up to three times, in one or multiple categories.  However, you will only be eligible to win once, overall.

:bulletblue: Deadline is 11:59pm October 22, 2012. There will be no further extensions.

Quick Info about Relativity

:bulletblack: In an effort to help those not familiar with Relativity, here is a cheatsheet with information on the series and main characters ---> mirz-alt.deviantart.com/journa…

:bulletblack: We have also been creating super-condensed, full synopsis of each episode.  This will allow readers to get acquainted with the events of the stories if they do not have time to read the full versions.  You can find the first 4 episodes here and the rest of the episodes will be added shortly ---> relativitycomic.deviantart.com…

Each category will have the following winners/prizes:

Relativity Contest Stamp 1 by mirz-alt Relativity Contest Stamp 2 by Mirz123

:bulletblack: How your OC is involved is up to you.  We love creativity. Some examples of possible ideas include: Your OC meeting with a Team Torrent character to solve a crime. Perhaps your OC falls in love with one of the heroes.  Or maybe your OC has a grudge against Black Torrent and
decides villainy is the way to go.

:bulletblack: We are big on story, so quality of art is good, but we will be looking at how it all ties together.

:bulletblack: Any questions should be posted to the comments here and we'll try to answer them as best we can.

Good Luck and Have Fun!

My entry for the May EMTC. Theme is: Rain [link]

Another contest without a chance to win. *sigh*

Anyhow, I have been thinking a lot about this lately--particularly as I've been quite emotional and crying a bit. It always seems better/easier to cry when you're in the rain, because it's harder for others to notice.

New style of doing the tree since I wanted something a bit different for this piece. Grass is my stock. Thanks to *Ravenswd for his help on the rain.

Spotlight Features - Volume 11

Sat Oct 20, 2012, 10:07 AM

A news series featuring art selected by me. There will be a wide range of themes and genres covered. In addition, there will be periodic interviews and artist spotlights.

:+fav: If you like this article, please add it to your favorites to help spread the love for the art and artists within.

Daily Features

On my profile page, I feature a new deviation every day (or two or three). The piece is usually something that caught my eye. Could be an amazing digital painting, a fun stamp, a quick photograph that made me smile, perhaps a piece for a weekly theme, whatever.  However, it moved me enough to share it with my visitors. Below is a list of the artists which I featured during August 2012. I am showcasing different pieces from their gallery in the hope of showing them a bit more love. If you would like to see the original piece I featured of each of these artists, please visit this folder.

Spotlight Interview

In this series, I hope to introduce the community to some artists who have been around dA for a while, but are still relativity unknown. The interviews are meant to be short and sweet. I encourage you to check out the artist's full gallery and add them to your devWatch.

:iconthreshthesky: -- This issue, we talk to digital artist, ThreshTheSky

:bulletwhite: Could you introduce yourself and tell us a little about yourself and your dA life?

Hey everyone!  I've seen myself referred to as Thresh here on deviantArt, so I guess I'll go with that. I'm a hobbyist and originally joined this site to participate in its fandom communities as well as to get feedback on my art. I still very much enjoy these aspects of dA but have also branched out into commission work. Depicting the original characters of fellow deviants is currently a large portion of what I post here.

:bulletwhite: What would you say your main artform is? Secondary?

I've always had an enthusiasm for traditional drawing, especially pencil and ink. It was only when I joined dA earlier this year that I really started to explore digital painting. This seems to have taken over as my main art form, at least for now. Pencil drawing is currently my secondary art form. My overall focus, regardless of medium, is portraiture.

:bulletwhite: When did you start pursuing your art? What prompted you to?

Although I've been drawing since before I can remember, I didn't take any art classes in college and didn't have much time for it.  After I finished school and had a little more spare time, I started drawing again.  The learning experiences and encouragement that I've received since joining dA currently has me working on my art harder than ever before.

:bulletwhite: What is your favorite piece in your gallery at the moment?

My overall favorite is probably a painting of my cat, Andy. But if I may, I'd also like to mention a painting that I did of Indiana Jones, which is my favorite fan art deviation in my gallery.

Painting of a Friend II: Sunbeams by ThreshTheSky Indiana Jones by ThreshTheSky

:bulletwhite: In general, what is your favorite thing to create (i.e. fan-art, poetry, etc) ?

As someone who finds characters and storytelling incredibly inspiring, I have no problem saying that I love creating fan art.  I can always tell if I've enjoyed a movie (or book, comic, tv episode, etc.) when the first thing I want to do after it's over is draw something from it.

:bulletwhite: Just for fun question: What's your favorite movie and why?

Choosing just one is difficult. I know it's a cliché response, but I think I'll go with The Matrix. It's a movie that absolutely blew my mind the first time I saw it and has since played a significant role in shaping my tastes and aesthetic in many aspects of my life, including the art that I create. (It's also the movie that I'll watch when I'm sick. The lobby scene always puts a big, goofy grin on my face.)

:bulletwhite: Time to spread the love. Who are 3 artists you feel could use more love? If you can, tell us why?

s3lwyn This artist has a gallery full of amazing digital paintings with an emphasis on fan art. Her style beautifully combines realism with a unique softness that gives her work a really cool, ethereal quality.

Madonna by s3lwyn

Exotizc If you like photorealism and/or animals, definitely check this artist out. Her attention to detail and dramatic use of light in her digital paintings are stunning.

Lukas by Exotizc

aemiliuslives This artist creates awesome 3D renders and animations.  What he's forgotten about lighting effects is probably more than most people will ever learn in the first place.

Maleficent by aemiliuslives

:bulletwhite: Final words?

Thank you! This was fun and surprisingly challenging. :)

I have long admired this meme, and in fact, it inspired me to do a slightly similar meme here ---> [link] . Anyhow, I still love this meme since I love having an excuse to talk about my OCs. But I didn't feel I had good enough art to post on it. Then, recently, I saw someone had completed it using their commissions, so I thought "why not."

About my choices...

:bulletblack: Oldest: Sara Wolff. I was 19 when she was created (23 years ago)

:bulletblack: Newest: Vera Barricuda. She was mentioned in passing, but recently gave her a look and development

:bulletblack: Nice: Melody. She is very nice, and not nearly as shy as Sara.

:bulletblack: Naughty: Martin Bling. Womanizer, gambling magnate, plus there's much more to this "snake oil salesman."

:bulletblack: Surprising: We never, ever thought Ravenswood would end up a sexy beast who would give Torrent a run for his money with fan-girls (and boys).

:bulletblack: Conventional: Billionaire, playboy, who has a new girlfriend every few weeks. Um, yeah. But there's some twists to this one.

:bulletblack: Easy to Create: Relatively. Michael/Torrent really wrote himself.

:bulletblack: Difficult: Even though this character was created years ago for an RP, re-imagining him for Relativity nearly killed me, and put me in a several month art block!

:bulletblack: Preferred Deviation: Such a personal piece in and out of the story.

:bulletblack: Failed: A technically well done and beautiful picture, but just sexified the females characters too much, which didn't suit them. My fault for not articulating to the artist well enough.

:bulletblack: Single Character: SparklyDeath by `SparklyDest. Man, that vampire is hot stuff. I may not have created her, but glad I know her.

:bulletblack: Duo: Vondel and Aralyn by =PiccolaRia. Not really a couple, but certainly a pair and..oof...what a story. So jelly I didn't create them.

Original art with artist credits can be found in my favorites.</b>

Original meme by the very sweet *Feliane. You should really check out her gallery.

This is a re-do of the Martin Bling portrait I did a year ago. I was never happy with how it looked and wanted to re-vamp it, but never had the time before. I really wanted the face to match the full-size doll and finally got it. Though, admittedly, I don't think my skill back then could have pulled it off, so it's probably just as well it took me all this time to update it. :D

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About the character:
This is Martin Bling. He's ungodly rich and a total ladies man. And he's as crooked as they come. :eyes:
Bling is an interesting creation as he really is 2-3 characters from our past writing, rolled into one. He was directly created to replace a senator character who appeared in the first Dark Flame story (years before we RPGed or anything like that). But as time went on, he evolved into something a bit more. He's one of my favorite sleazebags in the series. :giggle:
Dolling wise, I ended up totally re-drawing the head from scratch. Because it scope was larger, I had to broaden the base to make the proportions work. Though, admittedly, it's still a bit wonky. :blushes:
Base by ~kami-bases. Heavy edit by me. You can see the original in my Scraps. [link]
Last week I uploaded a theme song that *Ravenswd and I had created for our fiction serial. It was deliberately supposed to be short as it was a mock-up for the opening sequence of a television show. However, we always meant to do something longer. So, all week I was working it out in my head and we sat down and did an extended track this weekend. We're pretty proud of this.
Note that we have a few people working on other Relativity pieces. We just like the idea of having some music. Eventually we hope to get some theme music for the core characters.
Once we get a few pieces of music we like, our hope is to eventually hire someone to do a more formal sounding version with a more realistic orchestral sound. But, of course, that will be a while, when finances allow.
:pointr: Original short version here ---> [link]
