The spotlight has a certain psychological effect that can cause the brain to do strange things.
For example, if you’re in a play and you know your lines backwards and forwards in rehearsal, the effect of the spotlight could still make you trip up on opening night. It wouldn’t be the first time it’s happened, and luckily for you, you’d be in very good company.

When a subject poses to have his or her photograph taken, the subject tries to project a message about himself or
herself by how he or she “poses”, by the attitude of his or her body language or facial expression.
If the subject is posed by the photographer, the body pulled and prodded into the desired angles,
the facial expression “directed”, it is the photographer who is intending to communicate a message.
In either case, posing or posed, there is undeniably something “false” in the representation.

Here we go:
We stayed in a small hotel which is called a boutique hotel because it sat between some shops and a bar as if it was a little store as well. The keys to get in out room were not electronic. They were made of a hard plastic and on the end of them had what looked like hole punched patterns that fit the lock. I had my own room so all I did was keep up with my own one (I am proud that I never lost it xD).
Paris is a huge city, like Boston or New York City but with more traffic and less green areas. While walking on the sidewalk there were shops on one side and the road on the other. There is a butt-load of traffic filled with small cars, buses, taxis, motorcycles, and even bicycles

Amriti is staring at the other women while they dance in a cloud of colors. She wears a shy smile and tears of joy dampen her eyes. Her white sari is stained with the colors of Holi, the Hindu festival that marks the beginning of spring. This is unusual for many Indian widows; tradition dictates that they mourn the memory of their husbands until they die.
In many areas of the subcontinent, widows still suffer abuse and humiliation. Considered pariahs by patriarchal Indian society, they are stigmatized by prejudices and superstitions. Mistreated and forced from home, many widows seek shelter in the holy city of Vrindavan, on the banks of Yamuna River, where Lord Krishna is believed to have spent his childhood, and where today thousands of neglected women live in the ashrams run by the government. They pray and wait to die.

Back in November, while walking in New York City's Union Square, Benjamin Lowy -- a photographer with Getty Images' reportage group -- stopped to chat with a homeless man who was holding a particularly "interesting" sign, he told The Huffington Post. It read: "Give selflessly and you will reap endlessly."
Lowy quickly learned that the two had more in common than he ever could have expected.
The homeless man, Scott Sutton, said he had worked as a photojournalist and then as a darkroom manager for Archive Photos, a group that Getty Images eventually bought. The pair found that they knew a lot of the same co

There is gorgeous light, little light, strange light, dim light, golden light, light so wonderful it makes your whole body hurt, scary light, difficult light, blueish light, morning light, evening light, light at night, light that feels like lead, the sulfuric-yellowish light shortly before a hailstorm, mixed light, the rose tinted light of Eos, the greek goddess of dawn, soft light and hard light, harsh light, artificial light, autumn light, light that tickles you in the morning and wakes you up, maybe there's even ugly light.
Isn't referring to different light situations as good or bad really an approach that keeps you from tackling challenges? One that stops you from trying to find something that makes all kinds of different light work for you? One that stops you from experimenting with light? One that might prevent you from taking th

Are there places were street photography is impossible? Are there countries easier than others, or harder than others? How is it street shooting like in exotic places, or places you never visited, places that are completely different from what you are used to? I asked a few street photographers around the world to share with us their experiences.
This article was written for us by Doug Richards aka :iconDougNZ: from New Zealand.
Chuck Close, an American painter and photographer, said:
“I always thought that inspiration is for amateurs. The rest of us just show up and get to work. You sign onto a process and see where it takes you. You don't have to invent the wheel every day. Today you'll do what you did yesterday and tomorrow you'll do what you did today. Eventually you'll get somewhere. Every great idea I ever had grew out of work itself. Loosely based on "About Looking" by John Berger en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ber…
If you look them up in any dictionary of modern occidental language you'll find out that the two verbs 'to see' and 'to look' mean two different cognitive actions, complementary but somehow opposite. The definition in the dictionary shows it clearly: 'to perceive with the eyes' (to see) opposed to 'to direct one's eyes in a given direction or on a given object' (to look) which still implies employing one's sight.
There are many factors contributing to the distinction:
- First of all is the 'intention'. To look presumes a will, an intention, that seeing doesn't necessarily entail.
- The 'orientation'. The eyesight can be general and unfocused, while the gaze is focused on something, even when we stare into emptiness.
- The 'duration'. 'To see' do

“What i like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.”
This week I spied an awesome topic in georgewjohnson's journal and knew instantly that it was what I would talk about for edition twenty eight. "Underground train system bosses are set to ban all photos under new proposals that have angered photographers.." You can read the full article for yourself here but I would love to get some discussion going amongst us all as to whether or not the proposed ban would effect you. I'm personally quite pleased that the latest articles report a U-turn in the proposals so it doesn't look

Shortbread - sort of like marmite, you either hate it or love it. I have to be in the mood for it - but it is quite lovely. Generally, it originates from Scotland. Walkers Shortbread is actually Scotlands largest food exporter! Shortbread is fairly simple to make and aside from burning it, not much can go wrong. So if you've not tried making it before (or eating it) start now!

One epic Journey needs your helpI rarely write to promote others efforts in raising money for charity. It's because there are so many out there, that to promote each time I come across one would be ongoing forevermore. However there is one particular cause that I would like to direct your attentions to today. One epic Journey needs your help in Personal More Like This
A friend from my college days is cycling unaided from Lands End to John o' Groats in June of this year. That's basically from the bottom of the UK, to the top. He's doing it for a very special charity based here in the UK called Naomi House. And why? Because in 2008 his newborn niece unfortunately died - but Naomi House were there to make her last few days as comfortable as possible. Naomi House provides respite to sick children with life limiting illnesses - and their families. It keeps a family together until the last possible moment.
I urge you today, not to donate. It would be nice if you can, but that's not entirely why I am writing about this. But I urge you more than anything else to spread the

Rui Palha: the movie PhotographerAs you might guess, I often scour the web in search of images that touch my heart. I will drop whatever I am doing to find out more. The director couldn't have done a better job, starting with the window frame and the scratched and worn glass from which we look through. The actor's hand in pocket, the other holding a newspaper, keeping it close to himself; The hunch something weighing heavy on his mind; The backlight putting him in silhouette giving him an anonymous feel perhaps it's what he's feeling; People ignoring him what life often is about you're on your own I was moved by its simplicity and its complex emotion of loneliness.
Rui's images seem to be devoted to that independent soul. He is drawn to the loner, the one who st
Pavel Kosenko: streets for pleasureI first discovered Pavel Kosenko through his Russian website http://www.pavel-kosenko.livejournal.com. No, I can’t read Russian but Pavel is a blogger and photo discoverer himself. I came upon his post from another post of “4 x 5″ Kodachrome slides of the American war effort during World War 2. They are stunning examples of color and subject matter by industrial and military photographers.Pavel Kosenko: streets for pleasure in Personal More Like This
What drew me to Pavel’s work is his sense of color. When you look at his images, you can just eat the colors. They are exquisitely rich and velvety or harsh and poppy. It’s as if he took them with Kodachrome, except it’s digital.
Pavel talks about the harmony between colors. He is devoted to the study of color. Not just with color wheels but how master painters, who have command of color, are able to combine colors to compliment e

Following his graduation, Rinzi worked at Technicolor in its DVD and Blu-ray production facility for 10 years, advancing from designer to project manager and ultimately becoming a manager and art director. Although he originally adopted photography as a hobby, Rinzi became so devoted to the art that he decided to pursue it as a full-time career.
He quickly garnered attention on the local arts scene for his distinctive style of black-and-white street photography, with its emphasis on the interplay of light and shadow. His work appeared in the Los Angeles Times’s Southern California Moments f

The categories game arises from the inherent category biases under dA's "fair exposure" policy. The goal of the policy is to "maximize the display of the most popular deviations in a variety of topics with Fair Exposure, the community is exposed to a varied cross-section of deviantART. " What this boils down to is that certain categories have inherent ranking advantages and others inherent ranking disadvantages on front page. And I did it today, when I was feeling like a complete fool and incompetent, on the brink of giving up my efforts with photography altogether. I have no ideas and I feel that my work just looks ridiculous and amateurish, so I should give up, right?
And then I read this "Don't get discouraged: If you're having a hard time, it's not because you're dumb or incompetent, it's because you're trying to do something hard! Failure happens for a reason. If it was easy, everyone would be super skilled at it already."

According to deviantART's hq, "deviantART's algorithm for Popular browse results (ie. front page) is known as Fair Exposure. The goal is to maximize the display of the most popular deviations in a variety of topics with Fair Exposure, the community is exposed to a varied cross-section of deviantART. "
What this boils down to is that certain art categories have inherent ranking advantages and others inherent ranking disadvantages on front page as a means of ensuring that a variety of works from across deviantART are visible on front page and not just that of one category. Sounds pretty good right?
Well let me say before I continue that I do not know deviantART's actual mathematical algorithm for front page ranking. However, I think that anyone who notices the composition of front pages (whether 8 hour or 24, main or by category) and the statistics of the pieces that populate those fronts pages can give you a pretty good guess.
