APOPHYSISWe are going to have special features (from time to time)about the different software programs that we all use to make our fractal image art. This first one centers around the very popular program APOPHYSIS.APOPHYSIS in Personal More Like This
Apophysis is an open source fractal flame editor and renderer for Microsoft Windows.
Apophysis has many features for creating and editing fractal flames, including an editor which allows one to directly edit the transforms by manipulating triangles, a mutations window, which applies random edits to the triangles, an adjust window, which allows the adjustment of coloring and location of the image, and even a scripting language with direct access to most of the components of the fractal, which allows for effects such as the animations seen in Electric Sheep, which are also fractal flames. Users can export fractal flames to other fractal flame rendering programs, such as FLAM3.Scott Draves invented Fractal Flames and published an open source implementation written in C in t

Have you heard about .....Several weeks ago, in my daily effort to view all the daily submissions from the many Groups and individuals I watch, I started to notice more and more frequently that some of the Fractals I was viewing were being created using this new program. First it was just a few a day, then suddenly I was seeing dozens of Flames being created with JWildFire! Curios about this newcomer to the Fractal Scene I went to the website and discovered that the software is designed to run using Java and will run on multiple Platforms.Have you heard about ..... in Personal More Like This
So, I with to the developers da page and told him that I had created a folder in Xtreme Fractals for the software! http://xtremefractals.deviantart.com/gallery/34103672 I also grabbed a snippet of information about the software to put on the left info panel of the folder. Since then the developer, *thargor6 has joined our Group and he and I have had several discussions about his program! What follows is a result of those discussion. Here's Andreas aka - Thagor6

So it happens I'm in a spring mood and feel like being showered with flowers - time to shed the heavy skin clothing into light and fragrant. Got amazing comments on the blooms as well - from dreamy, in my dreams full of magic to I wish they grew in my garden, can you make some prints and even could you make the Blooms into 3d-sculptures
All ideas and suggestions are very welcome - on short time notice I did added some prints & also a brand new calendar (with Blooms only). You can always add it to your wish list (so you don't forget the blooms when Christmas comes) or you can get it even right now, still 10 solid months left, and afterwards you can get the singular month pages to use as prints(I do that - good price for 12 artworks).

Fractals that ROCK !! pt3Some new & some older finds from my vast gallery of fractal faves. I would say wrapping this years artworks, this is a year of the mandelbulb 3D - the new improved versions of the program, really opened up more horizons for many new fractal artists and also created fantastical compositions coming from the onces, who dabbled with the software longer time. Now with the reflections options, better dof settings, "dust" clean-up many scenes carry complex sci-fi terrains, or whole futuristic cities - just like Dune, or StarWars !!Fractals that ROCK !! pt3 in Personal More Like This

The first news with Rocking Fractals went over very well - and I got many comments from non-fractal artists, saying they really enjoyed it.
And since fractal art is still in the 'underdog' category getting folks on dA more familiar with it, sounds grand to me.
I would love to get you familiar with few artists - some new, some not so new and a nice mixed-smoothie of fractal works flowing to the gallery on regular bases and that will mean "Fractals that ROCK" is here to stay and give you updates on newest finds and excellent compositions and visions - Enjoy !!

This is an encouragement to use POLYFOLD_SYM!
This transform adds a polygonal symmetry to a fractal, of specified order (order should be an integer number normally. Even orders are 100% continue while odd ones have a discontinuity plane... )
Normal PolyFolding did not allowed to choose a shift without breaking continuity instead this allows to do so! Try it.

No more noise on reciprocal fractalsNo more noise on reciprocal fractals in Personal More Like This
With ReciprocalX,Y,Z functions you can get very awesome variations on IFS formulas, the only problem was that the DE was a lot inaccurate! Particularly in the Navi, the fractal never showed up correctly.
More, the only rotations allowed were multiple of 90°, to keep discontinuities horizontal / vertical...
I solved this annoying problem with reciprocalX3, Y3, Z3 - three new functions! Try them and you will be very surprised.
Even rotations are possible without annoying random cut-planes!
A must try imo. Needless to say; reciprocalX3 is completely different from reciprocalX2 ... There is no way to "convert" them too bad. You must study new parameters!

Announcing the Render Evolution Project 2Hello again! Due to an enormous amount of positive feedback, I am running the REP again. This time around, the initial piece is being made by *GrahamSym.Announcing the Render Evolution Project 2 in Personal More Like This
GUIDELINES:
1. You tweak what I tell you to in a note, it will be different for each person.
2. You NEED to render at the size of 1600 pixels by 1600 pixels.
3. You have to be alright with your art being posted by others, though credited to you. Everyone is allowed to post the big compilation that I put together at the end.
4. I WILL submit the final compilation as a print at the end.
5. You MUST post your parameters.
6. Note me if you are interested. If all 20 slots are full, you will be put on a waiting list. Anyone on the waiting list at the end of this run will be given priority for slots on the REP 3.
7. NO WATERMARKS.

Mandelbulb Challenge #1Hello and welcome to the first installment of the Mandelbulb Challenges, a (hopefully) weekly contest for users of Mandelbulb 3D. I've been planning these for a few months, but I am by no means an expert Mandelbulb user, so please be patient.Mandelbulb Challenge #1 in Contests More Like This
RULES:
1)Please try to keep your postprocessing within the program itself, limiting external postprocessing to signatures and the likes.
2)Please post your parameters in the description of the deviation.
3)Tweaking other people's work is not allowed, unless specifically permitted in the challenge rules.
4)You need to link the entry in the comments on the journal. Otherwise, I'll have no way to view your entry.
5)All entries will be posted to be voted upon in the next Challenge journal.
6)Vote for an entry by noting the thumbnail of it to me. One vote per person.
7)The entry with the most vote after one week wins. I will also pick one or two honorable mentions.
8)The winner and honorable mentions will be announced in the second Challenge jou
Help With the Render Evolution Project!I am holding a large scale collaboration, and I need your Mandelbulb 3D skills to help! Details here> http://fav.me/d4n1fvx and copied belowHelp With the Render Evolution Project! in Personal More Like This
Welcome to the Render Evolution Project. This is a little bit of a pet project of mine. This project will be a collaboration between myself and a currently unknown number of deviants, preferably a number that is either a square or near-square number, such as 9, 12, 15, 16, 20, 24, 25, et cetera.
What happens:
1) ~fraterchaos creates a 1600x1600 pixel render in Mandelbulb 3D. He posts this, and that render's parameters.
2) Another deviant takes those parameters and tweaks them, making another 1600x1600 pixel render. They will post the new render and those params.
3) The new tweak gets tweaked, and posted so on until I declare the project to be over.
4) At the completion of the project, I will compile everything into one large mosaic-like piece. Everyone who participated in the project will be able to post this final piece.
If you would like to part

Fantastic Fractalers #1-GrahamSymWelcome everyone to the first volume of Fantastic Fractalers. The first featured artist for this series is *GrahamSym, whose Mandelbulb 3D images are stunning. I asked him a few questions and here's what he said:Fantastic Fractalers #1-GrahamSym in Art Features More Like This
How long have you been fractaling, and what got you into it?
"I have been fractaling for about two years now, I tried Apo with no success, then I found a link to Fractalforums and Mandelbulb 3D, I have been hooked ever since."
What would you say to someone looking to start making fractal art?
"I would recommend reading the tutorials at FF {Fractal Forums}, also tweaking peoples shared params and ask advice (Remember to credit the artist )"
What do you do when you're not fractaling?
"I enjoy music, either listening too or playing instruments. Although I don't get much time at the moment. "
Who are the fractalists who inspire you the most?
"Too many to mention individually. I see some great work posted everyday from so many people its hard to choo
Goodbye, GaryAs many of you have heard, =skyzyk passed away a few days ago. He was an extremely talented artist and I can say that he will be missed by all of us who knew him.Goodbye, Gary in Tributes More Like This![]()

Fantastic Fractalers #4-In Memory of SkyzykAs most of ou know by now, we lost an amazing member of the fractal community, =skyzyk at the beginning of the week. Gary was a good friend to a lot of us. In addition to this journal,Fantastic Fractalers #4-In Memory of Skyzyk in Art Features More Like This, I wanted to show how the fractal community thought of him, in addition to a bit more of his art, so this is a special edition of Fantastic Fractalers. Instead of the usual interview, I'll be quoting other deviants' tributes to him and comments on these tributes.
What Other Fractalers Thought of Him
"He was a good friend to many. He was a good artist, and very supportive to a lot of people"-*GrahamSym, in his journal here--->http://fav.me/d5wx9i6
"Gary was a wonderful artist and friend, and I shall miss him very much."-*Thelma1, in the comments of Graham's journal.
"Besides being a great artist, he was such a nice person."-*WolfSorcerer, also in the comments of Graham's journal.
"Gary, alias skyzyk has been a friend and confidant of mine for the last few yea
Fantastic Fractalers #2-fraterchaosWelcome to the second installment of Fantastic Fractalers. This week's featured artist is *fraterchaos. He has some impressive Apophysis and Mandelbulb images in his gallery. Charles also is the one who helped me start to use Mandelbulb. I had a brief interview with him, and this is what he said:Fantastic Fractalers #2-fraterchaos in Personal More Like This
How long have you been fractaling, and what got you into it?
" I think I have been fractaling about 6 years I guess... I originally joined dA because I made things just using Photoshop, then I found Apo fractals and got interested in that (mainly because of the influence of ~donnalorelei) and then later found Mandelbulb and fell in love."
How long have you been fractaling, and what got you into it?
"My advice for people who wish to begin fractaling, would be look at other people's work, tweak their parameters if you can, and find tutorials, there are ALWAYS tutorials, and they can be a huge help when you are first starting out."
What do
In Memory of Mark (kram666)We are sure many of you in the fractal world, here at dA, know of the terrible loss of one of the most amazing fractal artists *kram666. Mark was not only a fantastic fractal artist, but also a great friend to many and always full of the nicest things to say. I know I was always dumbfounded why he would ever fave any of my fractals when they never even came close to the work he did, but he was always full of encouragement and never once let a thank you go by without saying, "You're welcome." I know James and I will also miss the wonderful photos of his dear foxes, as well as his gentle free spirit that made dA a nicer place for so many of us. He will truly be missed by us all.In Memory of Mark (kram666) in Personal More Like This

2011 BMFAC News UpdateBMFAC winners published in print magazine!2011 BMFAC News Update in Digital Art More Like This
The 25 winners of the Benoit Mandelbrot Fractal Art Contest were contacted in mid February to supply large format files of their winning images and also a short bio explaining their interest in fractal art, software used and general information about their work if they chose to do so. We were also informed that the first exhibit would be held in Logroño, in Northern Spain. Javier Barrallo, a Professor of Mathematics at The University of the Basque Country, Spain and also one of the panelists for the BMFAC was our contact for this. The current exhibit will be in the Casa de la Ciencia (House of Science), in Logroño, the Capital city of RIOJA until June 10th. I'll post a few pictures Javier sent further down. Javier also says he will send more pictures soon.
Also when I was contacted in February, Javier informed me that he had written an article about the BMFAC for a Spanish scientific magazine with all the winning images i
Isolating Structures In MB3DHow to clean up your image background ~Isolating Structures In MB3D in Personal More Like This
Wow. I haven't done a journal in ages. I thought I would share a little trick for getting a nice clean background when you want to isolate a structure in Mandelbulb 3D. Why? Because sometimes the structures behind the main focus of your image or the main structure are either just small repeats of the main structure, or they are fragmented and in one way or another just not as interesting. Or the background might bury the foreground object in detail or draw attention away from what you really want the viewer to focus on. People strive for a lot of detail, and that's fine, and sometimes it works. But often I find that there's no main focus to frame your point of view. (Edit: I forgot to mention this is made using Mandelbulb 3D version 1.8.2 and I fixed a few typo's!)
Sometimes you're able to focus on the foreground structure through clever use of fog, lights and depth of field settings. Nothing wrong with that either, so this is just another
Mandelbulb 3D ~ Mastering 3D NaviBet that got your attention ~Mandelbulb 3D ~ Mastering 3D Navi in Personal More Like This
Well I'm sorry to suck you in by that devious title! I haven't mastered anything, but I did finally put together all the useful advice given in comments from a recent journal (http://haltenny.deviantart.com/journal/42966411/) I wrote on navigating with the 3D Navi tool. The funny thing is I brought up my solution to navigating at Fractal Forums back in May and ~FractKali responded with a much better solution than mine, and I either didn't read it thoroughly or simply didn't understand it. So I want to make it clear that I am simply passing along advice from the comments I've received here and at Fractal Forums. I just want to organize and better explain the procedure in case any have missed some of the comments.
Disclaimer ~
I almost always offer this disclaimer. I readily claim that I am far from an expert with MB3D. If beaten over the head with information enough times, it eventually
