ast week we published the video of Josh Wattles, makepictures Fan Art Law panel from Comic-Con. An educative, passionate and very enlightening conversation soon followed in the comments section. You can participate in that conversation here.
This week the superstars of deviantART panel will provide unique insight and advice for artists on the rise in the deviantART community.
Being a member of the deviantART community might be the most important support system a young artists could ever hope to have. That being said, there is also the problem of finding a way to stand out when surrounde

I have recently come across a most disturbing phenomenon in my studies of the Diabolic Infestation of the Soul. It seems there is a most frightening psychological conundrum when considering the concept of demonic possession even the most remote possibility of reality upon our earthly plane is the notion that just believing it may be true could very likely be the spark needed for the Demon to discover, seek out, and ultimately inhabit its next vessel of evil: You.

Having been thinking a lot about the origins of our globally held Dragon mythos in a recent article Reptilicus Infernicus, I couldn’t help but notice the Cthulhu legend was always lurking at the edges of my mind as I was researching the subject matter.
The Enemy at the Gates, the “Other”, forever lurking in the darkness and plotting an invasion most evil and an enslavement most hideous, is probably the original seminal “narrative” that was born when humans first acq

I am haunted in this holiday season by the opening lines of Charles Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities, his novel about a society 250 years ago coming apart in its seemingly irreconcilable divisions. Could it be these lines define where we have come to find ourselves today?

The vibrant digital paintings of alicexz are fiery, emotional, and incredibly memorable.
The colors of her creations (mostly portraits of popular TV and Film characters) are unusually vibrant, which is remarkable considering how layered they appear to be. It’s sort of like what manga characters might look like if painted by one of the Dutch Masters. And this artist exhibits just the right amount of quirkiness to leave us wanting to know more: she has a penchant for painting redheads. But, then of course, there’s a lot of red and golden fire burning through most her artworks.

That I finally realized I was trying to describe something that wasn’t there.
I finally realized that the magical something that sets cweeks’ works apart from others is that his camera disappears. There is no sense as you look at his photos of street scenes and other captures that you are looking through a lens, even the lens of a particularly talented photographer. There is a sense of simply walking through a town and seeing what you happen to see – without the

Male Sexuality in CrisisAnd yet men are constantly beaten up over bizarre invented concepts such as rape culture and patriarchal privilege. The bizarre but inevitable conclusion of all this is that women are fuelling their own unhappiness by driving men to consider them as sex objects and nothing more, because the thought of engaging in a relationship with a woman is horrifying, or too exhausting to contemplate. And the sexodus will affect women disproportionately harshly because research data show that when women "act like men" by having lots of casual sex, they become unhappy, are more likely to suffer from depression and destroy their chances of securing a meaningful long-term relationship.Male Sexuality in Crisis in Personal More Like This
We can be quite sure now that the sexodus is not some fringe, isolated internet movement as "Men Going Their Own Way" has sometimes been characterised. Games Don't Need DiversityTo put it simply, people who play games don't view the player character as a separate person, but an extension of themselves as the player. Players generally care more about what a character can do rather than their demographics. Woman attacks roommate and sets him on fire over a plate of spaghetti and meatballs
Melissa Dawn Sellers of Clearwater florida, was placed in police custody after an act of extreme domestic violence. It is alleged that Melissa became upset after after finding that her roommate, Carlos Ortiz Jr., had thrown out her meal of leftover spaghetti and meatballs.
The conflict resulted in her dousing him with nail polish remover and setting him on fire. A friend of the victim, Ines Causevic, describes his condition in gruesome detail.
“When he got up, his face was like melting off, it was pink and sore,” said Causevic. “His lips were burning.”
The man was rushed to Tampa General Hospital where he is in Critical condition, with burns to his face, chest, and shoulders.
This isn’t her first run in with the law either. She was previously charged with assault and armed robbery in May of last year. She was released in January, her court file declaring that she

While it can really bring out the color of the eyes and make them pop, having your model stare into the sun should never be on the agenda. Not only is it exceedingly uncomfortable for your model, but it casts very harsh shadows. In most cases, you want to position your model with the sun behind them, or to the side. This will illuminate the hair and offer a nice glow. The issue then is that the subject's face may be too dark (underexposed). To solve this, you can bounce some light back into th

To start, we will cover a topic suggested by ThomasJergelLet's Learn Portraiture: Model Communication in Art Features More Like This
Communicating With Your Model
Get to Know Your Subject
Different photographers take different approaches to how they interact with their models, but I've always taken a personal approach. Learning about your subject's interests can not only make them more comfortable, but it can also lead to more striking images that follow along with those interests. Communication is key when it comes to interacting with your model, and building a quick rapport is important in order to solidify that.
When working with amateur models who may not be familiar with posing for the camera, you may often find that they will resort to e
Protect Your WorkFor many artists, art theft is a frustrating reality. No matter how we watermark, logo, or constrain the resolution of our work, there are instances where artwork will be reposted, ripped, or used for commercial gain without credit or compensation. For some, this can be almost flattering, to know that there are those that like your work enough to steal it. But, the fact still remains, that your work has been used without permission, and for no gain of your own.Protect Your Work in Deviant Events More Like This
I have been a photographer for four years now, and throughout that time I am always learning. Part of that education is around copyright, and how to protect my work. The collage above is a brief representation of some of the ways my photography has been stolen. Some were edited without permission, event advertisements, included in a calendar, manipulated to advertise jewelry, sold on canvas, for promoting a cosmetic brand, or even for music videos.
Are you being honest with yourself? As part of becoming good at something you need to be able to reflect upon yourself. Judge your own abilities and work and consider the possibility that what ever you have been doing it wrong all along. Or perhaps you're actually being to hard on yourself and you're better than your conscious is telling you. (This is bad too because it leads to insecurities.)Are you being honest with yourself? in Personal More Like This

Do you often feel these things when you look upon work from good artists?:
I can totally do this too.
This is not so hard, I can do this faster.
My work is way more interesting.
It's not fair that this person gets way more attention than I do.
Why am I not being recognized for my skills.

I don't need to draw and learn all day to become this good.

Why it's so important to unite as artists. We are with many though yet we are with few. We're all divided over little subgroups such as, fantasy illustrators, concept artists, comic book pencilers, photomanipers, techartists, anime drawers, realism sketchers etc. You might even find your place at multiple sections. Why it's so important to unite as artists. in Personal More Like This
I found that the biggest united groups on Deviant Art are mostly evolved around fan art, such as Sonic, or My little pony.
Observations aside, I think the good thing about those groups is that they serve for companionship. Being an artist all by yourself with no one to share/talk about/discuss your work with can feel rather lonely. And that lonely feeling is not encouraging at all. Most of us keep a lot of things taboo as well, like techniques or rates. If we were more openly with these the changes of being underpaid or missing out on a job because someone else does it for hardly any money at all will grow slimmer. People should know what they are worth and not be afraid to ask for it.

This is why you (and your art) get ignored.People often get the sense of being ignored in the art-scene, especially here online. We all try so hard to get our foot in the door, it's like trying to stuff yourself in an overfull bus like a sardine in a can. This is why you (and your art) get ignored. in Personal More Like This
Sometimes you just want to socialize with other artists you admire and you seem to be talking into a brick wall or perhaps you've send your portfolio to a company over a dozen times and still don't even seem to get the smallest response or feedback. I will try and tell you WHY you get ignored and HOW you can get noticed instead.
I will go through the following cases of being ignored:
Do know, that even though being ignored feels very personal it's hardly ever personal at all!
Your comment(s) gets ignored.
It happens ever so often. You notice an artwork or a discussion and you weigh in with your opinion or admiration, perhaps even some feedback? T

RANDOM DRAWING TIPI've decided to send out RANDOM Drawing tips.RANDOM DRAWING TIP in Personal More Like This
(7/4/10) TODAY'S TIP:
I hope you get the meaning by how I word this, but I always remind myself to get TONE BEFORE DETAILS!! In other words, BEFORE I work on all the details of a certain part of the face, I make SURE I FIRST get the tonal value correct BEFORE I draw in the little details. Other wise, I end up smearing them if I have to keep blending that area darker and darker, and having to draw them all over again. Does that make sense? HA!
TODAY'S TIP 2/1/10:
Instead of tossing out your DARKER pencils (B, 2B, etc) WHEN they get too small, I save them for doing JUST the black and darkest areas of a drawing, when all you are doing is just filling in dark areas. While they may be too small to have that familiar feel in your hand, I hold them sideways for dark areas anyway, so it works nice and lets me get the most mileage out of my pencil money!

Breaking Bad Christmas – by Rick Fortson (DrPencil.com)
Twas the night before Christmas, and meth heads were sad,
Supplies had run low, it was time to Break Bad.
The meth Lab was waiting, and stocked with great care,
In hopes that Saint Heisenberg soon would be there.
The batch they would cook while evading the feds,
While visions of Blue Sky danced round in their heads.
Skinny Pete had his gas mask, and Mike had his own,
Pinkman knew the procedure, for he had been shown.
When outside the cook tent there came such a clatter,
They all grabbed their handguns, some brains they might splatter!
Mike ran to the window, while Pete hid the cash,
Jesse unzipped the tent door while checking the stash.
The moon off the breast of the new fallen snow,
Showed the twinkle of blue on their crystals below.
When what to their watering eyes should appear,

5 Tips on Creating Dynamic Character1. Start with a concept. This is how most of my characters start, and they usually begin with two or three word descriptors. "Demon stallion" or "spoiled dragon prince" or "psychic dolphin". Characters as this stage are more anima than anything; they are forces at play in the primordial soup of story. When an idea is this new, I try not to focus on it too much. Ideas need time to germinate, and I've found myself disappointed in times past when the potential of the character was so much more exciting than the concrete reality of what they became. Since during this time I'm developing plot and main conflict, I try to move characters around and see who I gravitate towards. This helps story and character grow organically. It's during this time that I try and determine what the character struggles with, the yin and yang of their internal difficulty. For example, I was recently asked to come up with a character for an urban fantasy roleplay, with no real details about th5 Tips on Creating Dynamic Character in Personal More Like This

1. They don't have flaws. Flaws are the first thing that should be explored in character, at least after the first flashes of inspiration have passed and you start moving into more concrete turf. People say Mary Sues are defined by lack of flaws; the flip side insists that giving your character "issues" won't make a character any less of a Mary Sue. Now, my definition of a Mary Sue doesn't involve flaws or the lack thereof; a Mary Sue, to me, is defined by the disproportionate amount of attention given to a Sue by the plot and the priorities of other characters. So, yes, it possible for a Mary Sue to have legit flaws and still be a Mary Sue. However, the difference between "issues" and a character flaw is what role they play in the character's deve
