Eclipse novella ReviewReview: The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie MeyerEclipse novella Review in Reviews & Guides More Like This
The background of the story:
In Eclipse, book 3 of the Twilight saga series, the 'bad' vampire Victoria wanted to build an army of vampire newborns in order to get even with Bella and the Cullens. To achieve her goal, she created a sidekick called Riley and put him in charge of training/controlling the newborns she had made. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner deals with what is going on with those newly created, confused and blood thirty newborn vampires, and focuses on one of the newborns, a young girl called Bree Tanner.
PS: In this review the word 'vampire' is being used very loosely, not that I actually acknowledge sparkling disco balls really deserve to be called vampires anyway.
The Story itself:
The story is told from Bree Tanner's perspective, and focused on the last few days of her 'second life', Bree had to depend on her new vampiric convent/group for survival even though she felt no co

As you might notice, public library to me is like a fairy godmother, every time I want some books to read, I write a book-request to the library, like: "Hey dear godmom! I want to read this and that book, would you please get them?" But sadly even my dear fairy godmom has its limit.

A precious blue stone with magical power called The Eye of the Moon was stolen from the temple of a secret holy Order, the High Priest of the Order sent out two well trained priests to a lawless small town Santa Mondega to recover the stone before it went to the wrong hand.
Meanwhile, crime lords, hired killers, bounty hunters from all sides were also making their ways to town, hoping to claim the magical blue stone as their own, all for their different reasons. Among the colorful and dangerous crew, there is one mass killer with a drinking problem: five years ago a stranger known as the Bourbon Kid came to Santa Mondega and slaughtered half of the residents while he was looking for the blue stone. Now here were rumors that Bourbon Kid was coming back to town again, again looking for the prize which he didn't find five years ago. In order to solve t

Suddenly, I mean suddenly we are told that the fight in every Districts had already been settled, saved for the battles in District 2 and the Capitol. The rebels had already taken control of almost all of the country, oh really? I was a bit caught by surprise, especially after the author, Miss Collins had remained us for many times the Capitol is so powerful and unforgiving.
However, I could still turn a blind eye on how seemingly effortless battles had been won in that story. Because after that the story finally took a turn for the better, e.g. Finnick and Annie's wedding, Katniss's friendship with Johanna and Katniss' attempt to reach out for an armed solider from District 2 and called for a cease fire, those are the good parts of the story, at least as a reader I could emotionally related myself with Katniss and the other characters, and I

Book's summary from amazon.com: [Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she's made it out of the bloody arena alive, she's still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what's worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss's family, not her friends, not the people of District 12.]
So here comes the final book of The Hunger Games trilogy. The first two books, the story of a girl struggled to survive in a dystopian society had showed a lot of promise, now it's time to see if the author would make the most out of those potentials.
Before I get to the actual story, I want to mention The Tank Man, an anonymous Chinese man who stood alone before a column of tanks on June 5, 1989, in Beijing, one day after the June 4 Tiananmen Square massacre,

Book 3 Chosen
*slight plot spoiler, don't read if you haven't read the book*
In Chosen, Book 3 of the House of Night series, Zoey finally realized the High Priestess of the House of Night, Neferet, was actually evil and was the mastermind behind a series of suspicious death among fledglings in school (those supposedly dead fledglings later turned into mindless undead creatures). But due to the fact that Neferet could read minds (saves Zoey's and Aphrodite's), Zoey couldn't share this information with her friends, nor could she tell them their supposedly dead friend Stevie Rae had also turned into an undead.
Meanwhile, Zoey was still trying to solve the mess that was her two boyfriends, Heath and Erik, and the attraction she felt for the school's sexy teacher Loren only seemed to grow....Why I have the feeling that I'd seen similar things before? Oh yes, seems like things had drawn in full circle since the previous book

After reading Book 4 Untamed, luckily the public library finally remembered to buy the first three books of the same series, so I hurried and borrowed the books. Here's my brief reviews:
Book 1 Marked
The story deals with the transformation of a human teenage girl Zoey Redbird into a vampyre fledgling. Zoey had her troubles at home, and her human friends more or less thought she'd turned into a monster when she was Marked and started changing into a vampyre. The girl seeked refuge in the House of Night, a high school for fledgling vampyres. In her new school Zoey struggled to adjust into her new life, she made friends with other fledglings and earned herself a few enemies, among them your typical queen bee Aphrodite, the leader of the Dark Daughters (a students' union of a sort) and the future High Priestess.
The story should have been a lot of fun. But I can't help noticing that something is missing. In the world

By chance I came across with book no. 4 of the House of Night series, Untamed (by P .C Cast and her daughter Kristin Cast).
Honestly when i wrote this review, I hadn't read the first three books of House of Night before, but I read plot description from Amazon.com enough to know basically what's going on in the previous books. HON is a YA vampire series about main character Zoey Redbrid and her adventure in a vampire high school, Zoey was introduced into House of Night, after she was being Marked as a fledgling vamp, she made friends and enemies among other fledglings, falling in love with different boys/ grown-up vamp guys and also found herself engaging in a struggle with the force of evil.
I had just finished the whole book, I'm impressed by the authors offering us a nontraditional worldview about vampires with Wicca and different myths being mixed in; but I'm also troubled by the other things that I had read:

Angrbodas Dienerinnen eilten davon.

I was going to do a list of my favorite alltime tv series but the list I have goes over 100 so it would be difficult to list them all.
So here's my list of favorite British shows.
1. Blackadder. (This show is classic. And in my opinion, Rowan Atkinson's finest work to date. All 4 seasons are hillarious. My personal favorites are season 2-4, because that's when the really clever writing comes in and the appearance of the Blackadder we know and love. Not to mention Hugh Laurie is hillarious as the utterly idiotic Prince George in Blackadder the Third.)
2. Mr Bean. (This is the first thing most people think of when Rowan's name is mentioned, they think Mr Bean. And who can blame them? Mr Bean is a real goofball but there are many hillarious and tear-jerking moments in the series, the humor is excellent and it's clever that this show doesn't use dialogue - making it a homage of sorts to silent comedies.)
3. Who's Line Is It Anyway. (I'm sort o

2. Beauty and The Beast. (One of my favorite Disney movies is also one of my favorite musicals. So many classic songs, they are inescapable. I'm serious here, I still have Be Our Guest and the Gaston song stuck in my head - I think I know the lyrics off by heart. Here's a fun-fact for you: I bet you didn't know that Hugh Jackman plays Gaston in the Australian version of the musical.)

2. Teen Wolf. (A wonderful light-hearted comedy about your typical teenager who just happens to find out that he's a werewolf. And an absolute gem of the 80's. Hello one and all, monstermaster13 with another edition of Monstermaster13's thoughts. This is sort of a rant on sorts on one of the most unusual and completely wacked up people in the history of comedy.
I am of course talking about Russell Brand. I mean seriously, what is it that makes this man so damn popular? I don't hate him, I am just saying that he's well...weird and not in a good way.
I just find him to be too crazy to a regular person, there's several different levels of Craziness, there is Lovable and Manic, Jim Carrey-Like, Eccentric, and then there's Axe Crazy (e.g Jack Nicholson in the Shining).
Yes I know that I have fanart of him in my "Favorites" on here but that's there for a reason, because in a strange way - I find him kind of interesting. Yes I have favorited several videos of him on youtube, but that's only because he's interesting.

2. Darth Maul. (This guy is amazing. Not to mention he looks so badass with his double-bladed lightsaber, his horns and his overall demon-like appearance!)
3. Palpatine. (Truly terrifying, not to mention the force lightning power he has is so cool.)
4. Dr Evil. (Mike Myers is one of the must underrated comedians ever. And he's hillarious in the Austin Powers movie as Austin, Dr Evil AND Fat Bastard. Mr...oops I mean Dr Evil is one of the most hillarious villains ever! Not to mention Mini-Me is adorable!)

1. Tom Hanks. (I admit that he was good as the voice of Woody in the Toy Story movies, he was also great in Splash, Big, and Volunteers, but since Forest Gump he just seems to be playing the same kind of role - either an idiot or some guy who gets involved in unusual situations, and it gets tiresome).
2. Alec Baldwin. (Great in Beetlejuice, and Cat In The Hat, but I think he gets typecast as a villain way too much with the exception of 30 Rock. Not to mention that Hulu commercial where he's an alien. *shudders*)
3. Paris Hilton. (Just because she's rich doesn't mean she's talented, it's the opposite.)

The Magic Roundabout is a decent film. For you Americans, it's rare. You'd only find it as a godawful butchery done by the creator of The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom. So just like I reviewed all main versions of The Thief and the Cobbler, I am going to review both the original version of this film as well as Doogal.
Now tell me, is it normal to see your childhood memories turned CGI and put in a thrilling adventure? Not at all. Dougal (Robbie Williams) is hungry as usual, Ermintrude (Joanna Lumley) is still a singer and Dylan (Bill Nighy) is still a guitar-playing hippie, only he can play classic rock in this film when he's in the mood. Only a new villain has arrived; Zeebad (Tom Baker), another icy villain. I remember reading a page about this film in a kid's magazine and the magazine accused Zebedee of being the villain. FAIL.
Anyway, Zeebad freezes the roundabout (carousel if you're North American) with all the kids including Florence trapped inside, and so the only ones lef

Umm... Is this supposed to be funny? Because some people I have seen laughed at this for no reason whatsoever. I have laughed at many comedies, but not ones like this. It's a complete borefest for me.
This movie is an animated movie based on the late Robin Harris' stand-up comedy sketch about a very naughty gang of kids. It's about Robin Harris (voiced by Faizon Love) marrying a hot woman named Jamika and babysitting a horribly misbehaved trio of children named Bebe's Kids. The trio includes LaShawn, a brat with ponytails, Kahlil, a hoodie and Pee-Wee, what you get when you cross Tommy Pickles from Rugrats with a Southern Baby Herman from Roger Rabbit. The kids are taken to a theme park that was supposed to be Disneyland but ended up being Fun World. The kids totally wreck the place so much, the other kids, even Robin's innocent son Leon, seem to catch their immaturity disease and they start to face some living robots for some reason. And their rapping sucks ass. There are

Hey, people! Was Iron Man too much of an understandable sight for sore eyes? Then have an eye-bleedingly good time with Speed Racer, because no-one cares about plots or epilepsy!
Speed Racer, based on the retro anime, wasn't that bad, but wasn't that good either. There are many people who aren't real critics who say this film is fun. Sure it may be fun, but guess what had to ruin it?
In a much-too-cartoonishly-colourful world where racing is a big thing and human names are just made up of words (mostly), Speed Racer is the fastest racer of all. Ever since he was a kid, Speed wanted to be a racer. When he was old enough, his dream came true. Now, well, I don't understand what the hell actually goes on in this movie. The film 's length doesn't help at all. All I remember is that the Racer family goes to a factory where Speed meets someone who is one of the villains of the story, he starts racing again, he goes to Asia, he competes with Racer X, he stays in a new home, he rac
Thief and the Cobbler reviewThief and the Cobbler review in Reviews & Guides More Like This
The Thief and the Cobbler, created by the animator responsible for Roger Rabbit and the Pink Panther, was a beautiful film. That is, if it ever were completed properly. The film is probably the big inspiration for Disneys Aladdin, which was just as great. The animation is so brilliant, not even the likes of Disney or Don Bluth could top it. Its a film youd have to feel bad for, since it took up to 26 years to make and seemed to fail and get butchered.
Its about a cute mute (at least he shouldve been) named Tack, a cobbler, who might compare to Jo-Jo in the Blue Sky version of Horton Hears a Who. The other main character is the swamp-coloured, cheeky, silent thief (at least he shouldve been silent). He is crazy for gold stuff as Scrat from Ice Age is crazy for acorns and he stinks so much that his flies follow him everywhere he goes. Tack falls in love with the pretty Princes
The Karate Kid 2010 reviewThe Karate Kid 2010 review in Reviews & Guides More Like This
This movie 5.9/10 on the IMDB, which differs from what the others think. And why? Because it's a remake! All you fans of the original Karate Kid judged the remake too hard when you saw the trailer. Just because it's a remake, doesn't mean it's always going to be bad. Not everyone will like it, but I did! It completely destroyed my expectations positively. It is only close to being as good as the original, and two memorable scenes are changed, but there are a lot of things Jerry Weintraub couldn't afford back in 1984, such as a real kid (the original kid was, believe it or not, in his early 20's), a true kung fu master, a trip to China or the chick from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. It doesn't even beat Toy Story 3, but then again, what will?
What surprised me in this film was that a song from the end credits of Hancock is used, when that was another film by Will Smith. The "Poker Face" song by Lady GaGa is also used, so beware Lady GaGa haters. That's the only song

Getting the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD box set for birthday and watching every single cartoon on the discs, my interest in the Looney Tunes has risen just about as high as the Muppets when I first saw Jason Segel's movie. I even looked at my old Looney Tunes annuals and found the comics funny as a 20 year old, the best coming from Dave Alvarez. One of those comics was a Lola Bunny comic in which she went on a Lara Croft style adventure which turned out to be another day in her life as a pizza delivery girl. Later came Who Framed Roger Rabbit's 25th anniversary, and I imagined what life would be like for cartoon characters with the current state of the animation industry. The next month, I watched their newest Cartoon Network sitcom, and the more of it I watched, the more I thought, "You know what? I think I'll review Space Jam!"

Cool World is possibly the weirdest animated film to date. It holds plenty of similarities to Who Framed Roger Rabbit and almost every animated moment of it is strange as hell. Heck, it's weirder and more nonsensical than Rock-A-Doodle. And in the line-up of Paramount's animated PG-13s, it kinda beats Bebe's Kids but definitely doesn't beat Beavis and Butt-head Do America.
OK, onto the plot. A detective from Las Vegas in the 40's (sound familiar to you?) named Frank Harris (Brad Pitt) has an accident which kills his wife and sends him to an animated universe named the Cool World. 47 years later, a cartoonist named Jack Deebs (Gabriel Byrne) produces a comic strip with the same name as the alternate universe he doesn't even know Jack about. His creation, Holli Would (Kim Basinger), takes him to the real Cool World, and boy, is it weird. Everywhere there's original cartoon characters (doodles) of different types, shapes and sizes in the styles of old Disney, Looney Tunes, Wa

The last four months of 2009 are mostly happy when it comes to movies with ratings below PG-13/12A. Food from the sky, a chance to see two Pixar classics again, a lie to change everything in a world where lies or religion don't exist, lots of happy romance going on, a magical door that leads to a world beyond your wildest imagination, big friendly creatures playing with a little boy, an anime franchise revival, a last chance to memorise the King of Pop, a famous Christmas tale being awesome-fied, woodland creatures having fun, a friendly retro planet getting discovered and two royals/frogs keeping a currently-disrespected company alive.
And then we get 2012.
There have been many mentionings of the world ending this year. Okay, so the story is about a panda who wants to do martial arts. No, this is not Kung Fu Panda. This is something 65% different. The panda's name is Pancada and he also dreams of being a ballet dancer while cleaning the Bear Box Bar. Grizzly Elliot much? (OK, that was a bad pun.) The world he lives in doesn't contain just any animal. It's bears only. His friends are a naked anthromorphic female bear named Beth and a snot-nosed, tall-headed bear with Yogi Bear's collar named Catotinha, who sounds like Mandark from Dexter's Lab. His boss is a tough polar bear named Polaris, who has posters of lame Brazilian bear parodies of fighting films in his office. Every bear strangely enough has three fingers on each paw.

Dear Michael Poryes,
I have heard that you are currently in production on the final season of Hannah Montana for the Disney Channel. We all will miss the show, although we will surely get reruns and merchandise. This will be a pleasure to you as you will get all the money you can contain. So I want to give you ideas for the final episode of the fourth season. I hope you accept the idea and start production as soon as you can, adding the best scripting possible.
It begins with Miley Stewart deciding that she should not retire from her pop career as Hannah Montana, so she arranges to record her new single and prepare for the concert. Robby Stewart helps Miley on the songwriting. She predicts that she will make the best song she has ever written. Lilly Truscott, Oliver Oken and Jackson Stewart agree to manage the instruments for her band, and the Jonas Brothers come to co-operate in vocal talen

"He's right," the girl said. "I need him for a school project. You can't have him."
The Grim Reaper looked over the two children defying him. "Really?" His voice seemed a hissing of steam from unknowable depths of time. "And what do you intend to do...to stop me?"
The girl looked up at him. "How about a game?"
"And what are the terms?" he asked her, interested.
"We fight. You win, you get the hamster."

REVIEW: "REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE" (1955)
Written by Diane N. Tran
For those whom never seen REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (1955), starring James Dean and Natalie Wood, I highly recommend it to everyone and anyone, because everyone and anyone has been through exactly this, or will go through exactly this: Essentially, on the surface, it is the story of a rebellious teenager who arrives at a new high school, meets a girl, disobeys his parents, defies the local school bullies, and is, all the while, trying to figure out his way on how to be an adult. This may seem "quaint" today, but understand this was the first film of its kind. This was a groundbreaking attempt to realistically portray the "moral decay" of youth subculture, to psycho-sociologically critique of parental styles, to explore and/or deconstruct the differential conflicts between generations. Understand that this takes place after the Second World War, w

Let me tell you a little story: In Rome, a few centuries ago, there was a priest and a ruler. The ruler didn't like the fact that nobody was enlisting in the army because they were all happy in love and married, so he got rid of marriage. The priest, upset by this, performed "illegal" weddings. When the priest was found out, he was stoned and beaten with clubs. However, that didn't quite kill him, so they lopped off his head and stuck it on a pike in the city square. And that's why we celebrate St. Valentine's Day...
Yes, it's February and, on the fourteenth of this month, is Valentine's Day. I'm a thirty-year-old woman who is still single, still a virgin, and still never had a boyfriend and I'm surrounded by all kinds of friends and family attached to partners. I get poked and prodded by

But there, unexpectedly, as I turned the knob to answer, stood the unfortunate sight of a middle-aged valet. Shivering from head to toe, his fluffy side-whiskers dribbled against his ruddy cheeks, his trousers clung to his knobby knees, his ill-fitted overcoat splattered in wet stains, his collar pulled up high, and his breath was irregular, as he held a small piece of paper in his gloved hand.
Basil's eager grin fled to an annoyed grimace at the sight of the ribston-pippin of a mouse, but ran his words courteously: "Excuse us, but we mistook you for someone else. How may we be of service to you?"
"Sorry to disturb you, sirs," said the manservant with a feeble sniffle, "but my master instructed me to deliver his note. He said it was urgent and also instruct

To the attentive yet long-suffering landladies of Baker Street, you are not forgotten in my books.
It was a bitterly frozen December evening, and the snow from the many days still collected deep upon the ground, shimmering brightly in the winter moon. Down the centre of Baker Street, it had been ploughed into brown crumbly bands by traffic; but at either side and on the heaped-up edges of the footpaths, it still lay as white as when it fell. The grey pavement had been cleaned and scraped, but was still dangerously slippery, so there were fewer passengers than usual.
It began to snow again as the landlady of Lower 221B closed the scarlet curtains over the ice-panned window. She blew into her hands for some warmth after touching the frigid glass and rubbed her arms, heading for the fireplace. The woman toiled

Today, I had skimmed through the typical "fanfiction" at a forum: It was one I had no taste for, one where there was no plot, no character development, no thought, no creativity, one of those average, mediocre writings where 98% of fan-writers attempt to write porn for porn's own sake by using "fuck me and fuck me hard," which just left me with a nasty taste in my mouth. Usually, these things wouldn't bother me as a rule, but what puzzled me was the numerous responses of nosebleeds and drools in the comment section and I began to question the concept of "fandoms":
Is really the audience I have to brown-nose to in order to get views from, to get comments from, to get critiques from? Is this what people really honestly want from fiction? Why do people say they don't want Mary Sues, but create them anyway? Why do p

To Sherringford Basil, she was always the Woman. Before then, her public entitlements were many and varied — the Primadonna Teatru Wielki, la Seconda Donna della Scala, la Reine du Palais Garnier, la Princess of the Renaissance, the Actress, the Adventuress, the Professional Beauty, the Woman in the Little Black Dress, the Jersey Lily, the New Helen, the Gibson Girl, but rarely was the name of Mademoiselle Irene Relda spoken under any other name, under any other entitlement, by my friend than the Woman. REBOOTS WELCOMED?: THE NEW FIFTY-TWO
Written by Diane N. Tran
Yesterday, on Wednesday, August 31st, DC Comics scrapped its entire publishing line for September in order to reinvigorate itself with a reboot or a relaunch, as they're calling it. This historic event consists of the release fifty-two first issues in a span of one month, starring rejuvenated versions of its iconic comic book heroes, such as Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, etc, and a storyline that had been previously rebooted twenty-five years earlier in CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTH. Fan reaction has been mix, from massive issues like the paraplegic Oracle walking out of her wheelchair to the tiniest issues like Wonder Woman having retractable pants.
While I personally disapprove, strongly and pessimistically, of this reboot for countless reasons that are my own, the NEW FIFTY-TWO has started with a bang, whether good or bad and is, t
AT 5: Feyerabend, Anarchistic ScienceThere is no real difference between scientific, metaphysical and religious truth. Truth is truth, no matter where you find it. It is a provoking thought. Yet Paul Feyerabend strongly advocates just this. In Against Method: Outline of an Anarchistic Theory of Knowledge he states: “Thus science is much closer to myth than a scientific philosophy is prepared to admit.” He then continues by calling science “that most recent, most aggressive, and most dogmatic religious institution.”AT 5: Feyerabend, Anarchistic Science in Philosophical More Like This
His ideas have not gone down well. He has been called “a betrayer of truth” and “currently the worst enemy of science” (See a 1987 article in Nature titled “Where Science Has Gone Wrong” by Theocharis and Psimopoulos.) According to Feyerabend, science is an anarchistic enterprise that can not be run by fixed universal rules. Creating rigid definitions to determine what is, and what is not, scientific almost always fail, F
TNA 6: Hawking, Metaphysical PhysicsStephen Hawking is maybe the most famous name in Science these days. Not only because his heroic struggle with a progressing motor neurone disease or the distinctive sound of his voice synthesizer, but even more because he is a scientific genius. A Brief History of Time is a well known bestseller (if not equally well understood). In 2011 he and his co-author Leonard Mlodinow wrote a new book: The Grand Design. In this work they ask the age-old question: Did the universe need a creator? Hawking answers “no”, because the laws of the universe are able to create the universe out of nothing, all by themselves.TNA 6: Hawking, Metaphysical Physics in Philosophical More Like This
How does this work? “Because,” says Hawking, “there is a law of gravity, the universe can and will create itself out of nothing.” I’m puzzled here. If there is “nothing” what is there to gravitate? I should think that a law of nature depends for its own existence on the prior existence of the nature it
TNA 5: Hitchens, A Not So Great StoryChristopher Hitchens — writer of the atheistic bestseller God Is Not Great — warns us: “people of faith are in their different ways your and my destruction”. It feels like a world wide conspiracy. And it reminded me of another book I once read. It is possibly written by a member of the Russian Secret Service and falsely presented as the so called Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Its message: there is a secret Jewish plan for achieving global domination, by corrupting the world’s morals, controlling world economy and monopolizing the press. In short, the Jews are out to get you. The forgery was used by the Nazis to justify their genocide and even today, many people belief in the authenticity of the Protocols.TNA 5: Hitchens, A Not So Great Story in Philosophical More Like This

TNA 4: Dennett, A Bright GuyWhen two American educationalists suggested at an atheist conference in 2003 to adopt the name “Brights” as a much more agreeable designation for those who had moved beyond all antiquated superstitions (meaning: religions), the American philosopher Daniel Dennett was among these that immediately approved and promoted the initiative. Calling yourself “bright” (and implicating that everybody who doesn’t agree with you is “dumb”) isn’t perhaps the most elegant PR stunt. But as mister Dennett is always a rather amiable man who refrains from verbal aggression and sarcasm, most of the time, I will not make the obvious smartass remarks (most of the time).TNA 4: Dennett, A Bright Guy in Philosophical More Like This
Archaeology as well as anthropology tells us religion is as old as the history of man himself. Logically, questions come to mind. From where did all these religions come? Since there are marked differences as well as similarities among them, did they start independently, or could
AT 4: Lakatos, The Degeneration of TheoriesIn my last essay we looked at Popper’s Falsification Principle as to discern what could be considered empirical science and what not. Popper’s view had a powerful impact on 20th century scientific thinking. But there were critics. They insisted that Popper was rather describing how science should work instead of how it did work. The real world worked quite differently.AT 4: Lakatos, The Degeneration of Theories in Philosophical More Like This
Let us listen to one of Popper’s students, Imre Lakatos. In The Methodology of Scientific Research Programmes he says: “Is, then, Popper’s falsifiability criterion the solution to the problem of demarcating science from pseudoscience? No, for Popper’s criterion ignores the remarkable tenacity of scientific theories. Scientists have thick skins. They do not abandon a theory merely because facts contradict it.”
Then what do these scientists do? “They normally either invent some rescue hypothesis to explain what they then call a mere
TNA 3: Dawkins, The Origin of DeitiesFor me, Richard Dawkins’ The God Delusion is the most readable of the Four Horsemen. Then again, this isn’t his first book. Dawkins became known to the general public with that other bestseller The Selfish Gene, a book famous for popularizing the term “meme” — a unit that carries ideas which are transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech and even ritual. Memes are the cultural equivalent of genes, which are transmitted biologically.TNA 3: Dawkins, The Origin of Deities in Philosophical More Like This
Memes, says Dawkins, evolve through natural selection pretty much like genes do. They spread through the behaviour they generate in their hosts and if they contribute to their hosts’ welfare, they proliferate and get more and more successful. Survival of the fittest all over again. But not always. Because some of these memes may “mutate” and keep on replicating profusely even when they become harmful to their carriers.
This happened to the meme(s) that form religio
TNA 2: Harris, The Crusading AtheistSuppose you are reading the extraordinary statement that “some propositions are so dangerous that it may even be ethical to kill people for believing them”. That the writer simply states that this is just “an ordinary fact about the world we live in”. It is not about what you have actually done, it is about what you believe. Because this idea could lead to harmful behaviour so killing you could rightly be considered an act of self defence.TNA 2: Harris, The Crusading Atheist in Philosophical More Like This
A passage out of an Orwellian novel? Or something out of “Brave New World” perhaps? No, it isn’t fiction. Then surely, it must be a passage from that darkest of books, the Malleus Maleficarum or “Hammer of the Witches”, written in 1484. Or possibly it’s from a recent Al Qaeda pamphlet? Wrong again. These words were written by Sam Harris in his 2004 book: The End of Faith.
Harris points to the events of 9/11 to illustrate how religion can shape destructive behav

In this world, another bunch of pre-scientific aliens descended upon British India in October, 1945, with plunder and conquest in mind, only to run into machine guns, anti-aircraft artillery, overlapping fields of fire, etc. The dark red, somewhat slimy and rather appendage-gifted Ssslethy being rather less cute than the teddy-bearish Roxolani, and the Indian Army of 1945 being a trifle more ruthless than the US army of 2039, none of the invaders survived: however, the antigravity generator for one of their shuttles was captured intact.
Earth scientists have spent the last 65 years banging their heads against the incontrovertible fact that if you arrange copper, quartz crystals, and a piece of magnetite in a certain configuration, and rotate it, you get an antigravity field, in spite of there being no discernable reason why this should be so. Quantum mechanics has gone off in some very odd directions, most of them dead ends, since 1945, as have th

It's the world of Star Trek - the original series - in the year 2010. The international situation is, to say the least, grim: the last of the genetically upgraded supermen were overthrown 13 years ago, but much of Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and South and SE Asia remain in chaos as nationalists left and right struggle against former bullyboy servants of the "Augmented" now trying to take their places as dictators and in turn both struggle against various groups backed by external powers, as they try to either restore the former status quo, maintain the larger empires created by the Augments, or create states more useful to the ambitions of other powers. The USSR and China took years to stomp out the rebellions that broke out in the Central Asian and deep interior provinces, leading to a collapse of Soviet power in Eastern Europe and massive damage to China's efforts to modernize economically.

Nobody is sure of from where they came, but they are familiar to humanity: they are the inhabitants of the October country, the witches and werewolves, the vampires and ghouls, the freaks and the abominations, the mummies and the necromancers, the ghosts and liches and the men with wings. Worse are those who have seemingly slowly turned from flesh to something else without bothering to visit the tomb, or those who have been born dead from cold wombs. Unknown at the time to humanity, the Earth was invaded by Venusians starting in 1959: equally unknown, a Martian invasion was beaten off by said Venusians in 1961. Able to take on human form (save for their hypnotic third eye, invisible when closed), the Venusians were able to walk unnoticed among humanity (and if anyone noticed them, they after all could just mind-zap them).
Not that from the human point of view it was that bad an invasion: the Venusians had no interest in devouring humans, laying eggs in them, or carrying off their women. They simply wanted a little elbow room: Venus was crowded, after all. And they liked human cuisine, and the quaint, primitive lifestyle. (Also, the Martians plann

The world is cool and dry: a nuclear winter devastated the planetary ecology, and desertification in the wake of massive die-offs of vegetation has left huge swathes of rock and sand only slowly being reclaimed by vegetation. Much of the world is also still radioactive: much of what was once the Southwest, Midwest and East coast of the US remain barren wastelands. Background radiation remains high, promoting a high mutation level. There is no moon: a failed effort to perfect a starship drive sent it flying out of the solar system in 1999. As a result, some pretty catastrophic changes have taken place in shoreline ecologies.
