The reason you were so upset? That was easy enough to answer. You had caught the captain spending time with his ex after he said he was working late. Cap now realized that this was a bad idea.

23: Bath In Open Rivers/Lakes Without A Prince To Guard Him
Gentle sunrays from the red-hued setting sun seek their way through the foliage, landing in a mossy clearing: six men in armour and red cloaks are gathered in the centre. There's also a youth with dark hair, stirring the stew that's boiling over the campfire. They're all happy: the journey to the neighboring kingdom was long and rainy, but they were welcomed well and the negotiations were successful, gaining Camelot another strong ally. The whole way back to the city has been uneventful with good weather, not a drop of rain in sight.
"It's been a successful week," says Leon while taking a bite off his bread and cheese. "But stressful as well. It'll be good to come back to Camelot an

Things That Merlin Isn't Allowed To Do (According to Prince Arthur)
Summary: A list which everyone in Camelot should be aware of, in which Arthur is a prat/possessive and Merlin is stubborn/too endearing for his own good. One: Animals. "Sometimes, Arthur thinks, Merlin is really, truly annoying." Pre-slash Merthur.
Author's note (2012-07-16): As I'm writing this note, this fic has nearly been completed and I'm in the process of going through this story a final time to adjust a few things (nothing major I promise!) and correct some grammar. Epilogue (11): How It Then Worked Out
For once, it didn't feel bad at all to wake up, spooned against a warm firm body and Merlin didn't worry it was a dream (because last night had felt far to wonderful and close and had left a faint ache confirming it was real, not any kind of illusion). He just cuddled closer to the warmth and thought that he wouldn't mind waking up every morning from now on in Arthur's arms in Arthur's bed, safe, secure, together. The warlock didn't worry about some untimely servant or guard barging in or even the king himself finding out about his and the prince's relationship. He didn't worry about having to tell Arthur about his magic, because he had a feeling deep in his chest that it would work out fine, that what they had couldn't be broken. Arthur really was more caring and selfless than he let on. Last night had been solid proof of that. Oh well, mostly selfless. He might've been a bit selfish last night, but it hadn't been bad

Chapter 10: In which there's maybe the prologue of something greater
Merlin wouldn't be convinced. Never before had Arthur encountered such a stubborn soul: once the boy had decided do to something, he wasn't going to be deterred, so in the end the prince had agreed to let Percival be the one to accompany the servant when he went to see the knights, while Arthur would stay behind in his chambers and sulk (thought Merlin). Of course he wouldn't stay behind and never would he, prince of Camelot, do something as undignified as sulk; it just wasn't done. He did the only logical thing, which was follow at a safe distance, glancing around every corner and diving into alcoves to not be discovered.
The servant was thankfully very oblivious, but Percival kept looking over his shoulder, feeling they were being followed or watched. Maybe he should think of a diversion to get rid of him? Oh yes, brilliant plan, Arthur scolded himself, and let M

The first feeling he had was one of refreshment. The second, as he stretched (a habit he'd developed over the last few days) was one of realization. His limbs were entirely too long. He fletched toes and fingers; they felt a bit sore In shock he opened his eyes. Toes! Fingers! It'd worked! The spell had worked he was normal again!

Chapter 4: In which the knights aren't insignificant background characters anymore
Merlin awoke to voices and something stroking his back and scratching his ears. Was it time to leave already? Or was Arthur attempting to annoy him or something? (Because it definitely didn't annoy him, on the contrary it was really nice.) He opened his eyes, purring it was pleasant to wake this way then he startled as he at first couldn't register where he was and, more importantly, it wasn't actually Arthur who was scratching his ears. He could recognize sir Leon and sir Bors pretty well, but was so unprepared at seeing them that he fell off the table.
Which, in turn, was incredibly embarrassing. Cats didn't fall off tables like that. He hated being so clumsy.
"Hey, do any of you recognize that cat?" sir Bors asked the other knights.
"I think it's the prince's. I saw the two yesterday evening walking down the halls, and then the kitchen staff mentioned

Chapter 2: In which Uther might not like all that he sees
It was when he started noticing the black feline constantly at his son's heels that Uther began growing suspicious.
It was no secret, at least not among the courtiers, that Arthur had taken no great liking to cats. Dogs were all right, and he where used to their presence especially during hunting, and horses was one of Arthur's loves, essential to him as warrior and prince. But since when had Arthur tolerated having a cat following him around everywhere all the time? Especially one so clumsy.
Uther wasn't by any means blind, especially not when that thing kept bumbling into people in the hallways, tying knots of the servants' legs, making courtiers trip and once almost jumbling the king himself when he was making his way to the great hall. (Which had made Arthur glare at the creature fiercely, protectively yet scolding; Uther could almost imagine his son saying "Watch where

The People Knows It
Little can rattle the inhabitants of Camelot anymore. They've had their fair share of sorcerers both good and bad, of magical creatures of all shapes and sizes, of rampant kings, angry druids, peaceful druids, stuck-up princes and wrestling with wyverns.
Over the years, they have seen the initially arrogant, selfish and overall unpleasant prince turn into a strong warrior, a man firm in his belief of his people's worth and a just regent. When he finally becomes King, cheers echoes through the streets.
Lately though, the streets have been tense and silent. The King might not be aware of just how far and deep he affects his city. When his mood drops it's like a dark sheet abruptly falls over the city, chokingly.
"One of their tiffs, huh?" asks Gregory the guard when exchanging shifts with another. The other man nods. "Yeah. I could hear them yelling and jabbering like old wives."

The director could not make an appearance, so everyone else waited aimlessly, but after two hours of waiting, they all milled out of the room.

You turned towards the voice, and quickly averted your eyes. You nodded, and gathered your things.
Excusing yourself from the scene, you shuffled out of the room. Before you did, however, you caught a glance of him, and saw his eyes, darkened with sadness and regret.

Bloody peculiar business, but at least they had been able to find Genitivi's research. It was going to be a long haul to the Frostbacks, looking for the little town of Haven, however; he figured they could stop at the Mages' Tower on Lake Calenhad on the way. He hoped that recruiting the help of the Circle of Magi would be a relatively simple thing, but nothing had been simple so far...

Zevran sat near the fire, as was his habit after supper. Frequently, this time was spent mending his gear or sharpening his blades, sometimes accompanied by a bit of chat, sometimes not. Tonight was one of the rare occasions that he had little to work on while the others went about their business, and he found himself examining the pair of Dalish gloves that Alessar had given to him.
The assassin hadn't understood at first; he was perfectly happy with the light, well-worn leather gloves he already had, and it took time to get a new pair of gloves properly broken in. Given the constant threat of werewolf attacks since they'd entered the forest proper, the story about his mother's gloves that he had told the Grey Warden in the Dalish camp had been last thing on his mind in the past couple of days. It was just another of those personal bits of trivia that he seemed to let slip with unsettling re

Alessar glanced over as his fellow Grey Warden trudged up next to him. The group walked in a loose formation when they were on the move across the countryside, and the elven Warden was currently taking the lead -- not because he actually needed to lead, but because he wanted some time alone to think.
Of course, by now, Alistair knew exactly why his comrade would isolate himself at the front of the column, and usually he would leave him in peace. But they'd become a little closer since the events at Redcliffe, even if Alistair had been furious at Alessar's decision to let Lady Isolde sacrifice herself. They had discussed it at length, and while Alistair was still unhappy about it, he no longer held it against the other Warden. They had tried to do the best they could to keep the greatest number of people safe. These were wartime decisions, and Alessar privately thought

The Wardens' party had been to the Gnawed Noble Tavern before, assisting the Denerim city guard with some out-of-control mercenaries; the barmaids recognized them, or at least, they recognized Alessar and Zevran, who stood out as openly armed elves, and the group was immediately offered drinks. Alessar demurred politely, saying that they were there for business, and inquired where they might find the Antivan merchant they were meeting.
The girl who answered seemed nonplussed, if not a little nervous, as she directed the party to the first guest room in the back. They entered cautiously, keeping an eye out for anything as mundane as a mechanical trap or a sneak attack, but the way was clear.
Ignacio waited in the innermost room, two silent guards looming in the corners. Alessar knew Alistair and Zevran would make sure their exit route would not be blocked off -- at least, not from the inside -- so for

Alistair held up his shield against the hail of arrows as he looked around, trying to find his fellow Warden amidst the madness of battle. What had caused Zevran to cry out like that?
He only realized that the elven archer had fallen when he saw Wynne making her way towards his supine form, freezing the single genlock in her path with a focused burst of cold. Alistair couldn't make out her expression clearly at this distance, but she didn't look particularly worried...
Zevran, on the other hand, was fighting like a demon, recklessly chasing down genlock archers and single-handedly dispatching them with brutal slashes of his daggers. He was usually quick enough to evade their blundering counterattacks, the templar knew, but he was going to get himself hurt if he was fighting blindly.
"Zevran! Pull yourself together!" he shouted, wondering if the elf would heed him. After all these month

Alessar stood at the window, his hands braced against the sill as he looked up at the thin silver sickle of the moon. It looked sharp enough to cut the velvet of the night sky, he thought, then sniggered a little at his own overly dramatic metaphor.
"What is so amusing?" Zevran joined him by the window, setting his wooden cup down on the sill. The two elves had gone through most of the gifted bottle of wine while Zevran regaled the Warden with humorous anecdotes from his previous line of work. Of course, the wine made most everything funny, but the assassin had a self-mocking mode of storytelling that was quite engaging. Eventually, though, Alessar had wanted a moment to clear his head, and had opened the shutters to the cold night air.
The head-clearing effect was somewhat dampened by Zevran's proximity, however. The other elf's hand rested companionably on Alessar's s

"You do realize this is probably a trap, right?" Alistair murmured as the companions followed the distressed woman who had begged them for help.
"Could be." Alessar glanced sidelong at his fellow Grey Warden. "If it is, we're ready for it. If it's not, then someone honestly needs help."
"Does this altruism really pay all that well?" Morrigan said in the bored, disparaging tone that she used when she was irritated. "Grey Wardens -- roaming the countryside, finding lost children, fixing broken wagon axles and solving marriage disputes. It's all so very noble."
Alessar ignored the woman's pointed remarks. She seldom saw the value in doing what the others considered "the right thing" for the sake of one's conscience. Of course, she had a point, sometimes, and they did have more important tasks, but this was right in their path, after all.

Alessar was roaming around the Denerim market, passing time until his companions were to regroup, when he was distracted by a handsome display of daggers for sale. While graceful in design, the weapons were clearly meant to be functional, and their lines seemed somewhat familiar. Trying to recall why, he paused to examine the blades more closely.
"Ah, another customer. Please, feel free to browse my wares, and do let me know if I can help you with anything."
While the voice was unknown to him, the accent was not, and Alessar finally remembered where he'd seen such craftsmanship before. Zevran's original Crow dagger had been like this: elegantly simple, well-balanced, and razor sharp. He glanced up at the Antivan shopkeeper, who was eyeing him intently.
Maybe he's afraid I'm going to try to steal one, the elf thought a little sourly. He had gotten plenty of dis

Alessar kept tugging at the hem of his tunic. It was strange not to be wearing at least part of his armor, and stranger still to be wearing such fine clothes. Not that these were overly ornate or formal, but they were better than pretty much anything he'd ever owned, aside from his ill-fated wedding clothes.
The grey and blue tunic and trousers had been provided by Arl Eamon ("Not even gifts, Grey Warden, just a simple courtesy," the arl had said with a tired smile as he had the Wardens' party presented with clean clothes suited to their status), and were slightly too large -- unsurprising, considering his elven stature, after all. But it was a kind gesture, and it certainly wouldn't hurt to have presentable clothing in the future, especially if they were going to be muddling in politics in Denerim...

Jarlaxle stirred faintly, roused by the clanging of a buoy mixed with the splashing of ocean waves and the cries of sea gulls. The world had changed a great deal since 878 DR, when he'd been born. Now it was 1978, and Skullport's harbor was filled with steel battleships and cruise liners. Jarlaxle had grown old, although his mother than been older when she died. But there was no evil goddess to keep him alive unnaturally long, and the Weave had been exhausted, making magic die. And Jarlaxle was sitting on his private beach letting the soft rays of the sunset warm him. He got cold easily these days; he fell asleep accidentally.
But he was never so far gone as to miss the approach of the human walking up the beach toward him. The man wore white pants and a white shirt, the pants rolled up a few inches so he could let the waves lap over his feet. The shirt was unbuttoned, providing a

The hard, flat voice was exactly as Jarlaxle remembered it: "I never wanted to see you again."
"You told me to fare well or fare ill; you didn't care which." The drow offered an empty smile, hoping Entreri didn't see through it.
"I still don't care." Entreri stood from behind his office desk in the Copper Ante. "Whatever your scheme is now, I refuse to be a part of it."
"Can you say that when you'll benefit also? Especially without hearing the deal?"
"I can." Entreri pointed at the door. "Goodbye, Jarlaxle."
The drow left as asked, feeling strangely defeated.

Entreri expected a white flash, but all that happened was that he awakened in the last place he remembered being: a low couch in the Maranelli Guild penthouse. He sighed and pushed himself in to a sitting position, something that wasn't as easy as it used to be. He was sixty years old now, and he'd packed on forty pounds, making him overweight but not obese.
Still, he could most certainly tell the difference forty pounds made; he lost his breath in fights sometimes. However, he had no motivation to change his lot. Life held no meaning for him. Besides, he was a lieutenant in the Maranelli Guild, so he was plenty rich enough to eat and drink what he liked when he liked.
And that was exactly why he had a hangover.
Entreri groaned at the sharp pain in his head. Fortunately, the curtains were drawn over the windows, so the light wasn't too bad. He struggled to his feet, sighed, and headed toward the dining hall. He

The words seemed to reach Jarlaxle through a soupy haze. An errant thought nagged him, the thought that something important had happened and he needed to remember what. No answers followed, though.
"If you die now, I'll never forgive you."
Jarlaxle wanted to either laugh or frown laugh at the thought he'd die so easily and frown at whoever was making such odd pronouncements over him. As though he would die! But no sooner had he thought that than he remembered being in a fight, one worse than usual. Yes, that was right. Gaara had to wonder if he was making any difference. He wondered if he'd be allowed to make a difference.
Stopping in the last village at the edge of the forest, Gaara and his siblings considered the small selection of restaurants. They'd never stopped there for supper before, having always come through early in the morning or late at night.
"Not much to chose from, jan," Kankuro commented, surveying the stores with a distinct lack of enthusiasm.
"Anything's better than rations." Temari crossed her arms. "And I insist on fresh, hot tea."
Lured by the smell of frying meat and baking bread, Gaara headed toward the nearest restaurant, his siblings trailing behind him. His thoughts weren't on food, though

As his friend entered the forest clearing, Jarlaxle grinned at him. "So how goes the training of Entreri Junior?"
"Don't call him that." Entreri glanced at Tai, the "junior" in question, who had collapsed on the ground and leaned against a tree twenty feet away.
