I was playing around with the greeble modifier in 3dsmax before jumping into photoshop. It's a really nice tool to create random city shape.

Inspired from Blade Runner. :)
This image has nothing new, same old composition, same old techniques. I just want to paint a scene with the mood and feeling like this. ^^
Hope you like.

Project BF, image 9: Checkpoint

Travel between levels and zones of the city is restricted and security check is required. Since every criminal offense is registered in a police database, checkpoints are pretty efficient way to keep offenders confined to their respective zones. If you try some funny stuff, the sentry-bot will take care of you, so to speak.

About the project:
-----------------

'Butterfly' is my long-term personal project that started as a sf/cyberpunk point-and-click adventure game back in 2009. Here you can read an actual interview about it and see some old concepts - that's when I started with digital painting :) Since I don't have any more time for its development, I decided to tell the story in a series of concepts, maybe finalized with a downloadable mini-artbook. We'll see ;)

The story, set in Shanghai, in the year 2099, when androids stand for almost 1/3 of the general population. An undercover agent of a major corporation, ZEN Technologies, is sent on a mission to recover a stolen prototype of an AI module. In order to track the thief, he has to lurk into the deepest and oldest areas of megalopolis.

Project BF, image 1: Hi-tech dynasty

General overview of futuristic Shanghai, where the story takes place. The idea is to mix the old, stone architecture and traditional elements, like gates or monuments, with vast scale and futuristic additions (more city views to come).

Rough concept painting, inspired by a Ryan Church DVD tutorial. Pleased.
I used a default photoshop round brush which I flattened. No initial plan to the design so it came about through happy accidents.

A similar image could be created in a day for £100 ($160).

Took about 5 to 7 days to complete.
Completely painted in Photoshop.

To create a similar image with the awkward perspective and revisions would cost around £500/£600 ($800/$960).

I had to let this go as i was fine tuning endlessly.
It has been completely painted in Photoshop CS5 using a Wacom Intuos 4 large tablet. It took me about 3 months (on and off) mainly during evenings.
I used 1 point perspective techniques with a little help from the new CS5 vanishing point tool for a 2nd (very slight) vanishing point. I just aint got the time to learn a 3D package...yet.
I created the main central area first and the added more structures as I went on, making the composition spread further horizontally.
I masked area's and painted in the details using the vanishing point grids as guides. On occasion I used a textured brush or city textures which were manipulated over and over and reduced in size dramatically until I could piece them together to make new textures.
I wanted to add a more detailed space craft but my inexperience in art has limited me this time round.
The lighting was draining - I used lots of lens flares, shrunk down to small points!

To create a similar image would now take me about 5 to 7 days. The cost would be £500 to £700 ($800 to $1120).

A speedpainting, started yesterday, that went a little overboard. Still not a finished rendering but there's more stuff in there than my usual speedies. This one took a little less then 5 hours to make. Used the same palette as the other speedy - the next one is probably going to have the same colors only fully rendered, so I think there will be a little wait for that one xD

anyway, enjoy. And C&C's are welcome.

Oh also, I put a few scientists in white coats in there for good measure xD

Like I said at other works / websites - this image was inspired by Craig Mullin's work on Final Fantasy Spirits Within.
