Earth And Sky - Part 2Part 2 - Falling Into Place
Sweetie Belle wobbled a bit on her gold painted platform horseshoes as she struggled to keep her balance on the slowly rotating dais that dominated the center of her sister's workroom at the Bijou Boutique, the crown jewel of Canterlot's high fashion scene.
The elaborate headdress and wig she wore was threatening to pull her forward onto her primrose white face, and probably would have succeeded in doing so were it not for the weight of her billowing gown and the sweeping pair of swanlike wings that adorned it. The young unicorn mare wasn't the most coordinated pony in Equestria, and the tightness of the harness that underpinned her costume was making her a little light headed, which wasn't helping.
Rarity gazed at her sister with a critical eye over her horn rimmed glasses, smartly tapping a hoof on the hardwood floor to signal to the shop assistant who was hitched to the windlass downstairs. The turntable came to a sudden stop, causing Sweetie Belle to lur

Clouds of steam from the engine mingled with the fine mist of a drizzly spring morning as passengers disembarked from the express train from Canterlot.
Among them, a lavender coated unicorn mare paused to savor the pervasive scent of apple blossoms that hung in the air, smiling up at the familiar hoof carved sign hanging over the station house proclaiming her destination: Ponyville. She cast an apologetic glance over her shoulder as the passenger behind her irritably cleared his throat, and hastily stepped down onto the hoof scuffed concrete of the platform.
When she'd moved a bit out of the way of the milling crowd of earth ponies and unicorns, she paused again to properly stow the book she'd been reading, which had been hovering at her side like a dutiful companion since she'd exited the train. She pulled an umbrella from her saddlebags and opened it over her head. There it floated in a cloud of sparkling purple magic, its shaft balanced like the poin

Over the following week, the usual sketches and fabric swatches of high fashion dress designs that lined the walls of the Bijou Boutique's workroom were rapidly covered over with a profusion of diagrams and drawings of different wing shapes. A chalkboard filled with magical equations stood in the corner, with disused ponikins shoved behind it looking as if they were taking shelter.
Twilight Sparkle reached up to pull a pair of goggles down over her eyes and skimmed over her notes for the umpteenth time, calling out to the adolescent dragon stationed in the corner with a quill and clipboard in his claws. "Okay Spike, lets start recording the proceedings now." She cleared her throat, assuming an official tone of voice. "Sparkle/Belle Personal Flight Harness, Mark One, Test One."

Soarin let out a cry of pain as he slammed into the lockers, then sank to his knees with a low, miserable moan, the wind knocked out of him.
A younger pegasus stallion with a dusky purple coat and a white mane stood over him, eyes wild, wings flared, and teeth gnashing in rage. Between his bandaged forehead, the multicolored stains of assorted fruits on his yellow and blue flight suit, or the bits of glass clinging to his disheveled hair, he appeared to have plenty of reasons to be angry. "Just what did y'all think y'were doin', y'overstuffed feedbag? I coulda broke my consarned neck!"
The sky blue pegasus looked up at his teammate with wavering eyes, wheezing as he struggled to push himself upright. "I... I'm sorry. I don't know what happened."

Apple Bloom perched on a step ladder, articulating the wooden spars of the flight harness' redesigned wing, which now bore as much resemblance to the fins of a fish as it did the wings of a butterfly. Satisfied that the hinged attachment points were solid as well as moving smoothly, she gave Twilight a confident nod and climbed back down the ladder, folding it up and flipping it onto her back to move it out of the way.
The lavender unicorn stood on a square platform occupying the center of one of Sweet Apple Acres' hay barns, which had been partially cleared out to give Twilight, Rarity, and Apple Bloom someplace to work. A stout rope connected the harness to a pully, with Applejack holding the other end as a safety measure.
Since they'd arrived on her farm with this new project, the blonde earth pony had been watching their progress with an air of detached bemusement, but when time came to test the latest iteration of the wings she was adamant a

As the group of mares and their accompanying dragon made their way across the broad, cobblestone expanse of the town square, they began to take note of a steady stream of ponies converging on Sugarcube Corner with looks of excitement on their faces. The majority seemed to be fillies and colts.
Twilight cocked a curious eyebrow. "Huh. Looks like a party. I wonder what the occasion is."
Spike flared his wings expectantly and licked his lips. "Maybe they're giving away free samples."
Apple Bloom shook her head. "That ain't likely. Sugarcube Corner hasn't done a giveaway in a long time. Not since ol' A.J. "helped" with the..." She fell silent as her elder sister shot her a glare.

Rainbow Dash took off with Soarin to pick up their saddlebags at Sugarcube Corner and then go find her old house among the drifting cloud banks over Ponyville. He shifted his tempo to a more strident hop, which in turn caused the little orange maned foal to escalate from giggling to cackling. "Here comes a country colt, hobbledy gee, hobbledy gee!" He finished the rhyme with an emphatic bounce on his hooves.
The huge red stallion stopped and looked over his shoulder, blinking in consternation as he suddenly realized that Bud was no longer sitting on his back. Mayor Mare took a moment to throw open the windows in her office and breathe in the fragrant morning breeze that always blew through Ponyville this time of year. It was subtle, compared to the sweetness that pervaded the air when the apple orchards were in full blossom, but to longtime residents it was at once ever present and comfortingly in the background, the smells of grass being cut, of attics being aired out, of mist being brushed off of the cloud homes of the local pegasi.
For a town known for more than its share of tomfoolery and shenanigans, sitting so close to the unpredictable wilderness of the Everfree forest, very little actually changed in Ponyville from year to year, and that was just how the aging public official liked it. The new Royal Opera House was a tour de force of monumental Equestrian architecture, one of the most striking features of the Canterlot skyline. It rose over the domes and cupolas of the city, a row of concentric, horseshoe shaped arches with almost perfect acoustics anywhere within its cavernous interior.
Beyond the performance and appreciation of the finest pony music from ancient folk tunes to classical operas and symphonies to jazz and big band combos to rock and roll to the latest in cutting edge magilectronica and wubstep, the grand structure served a secondary purpose as a stage for the Equestrian elite to parade and perform for one another in their own esoteric dramas of social status and ostentation. For many of the creme of Canterlot culture, the show that went on among the marble pillars of the entry hall was the main event, while whatever lavish performance went on on the actual stage inside was merely the pretense for it.

Princess Celestia gave her prized student an encouraging smile and gave a bob of her tapering horn. "Now, Twilight, what is this matter that you and your friends would like to bring to our attention?"

Kurt braced himself, for some reason he expected the pink pony to bounce on him and hug him. Her very happy and exited nature seemed to just scream at Kurt to keep an eye of this pony. From a movie Kurt had once seen (though he cannot remember the title) it was a character with the same attitude that ended up killing all her friends... gruesomely. As he remembered the gory scenes, Pinkie, completely oblivious to Kurt's shudder, bounced right past him and set her basket down onto the table. The same table, coin

Trixie found the days passed by quickly and peacefully from there. She began to develop a routine. By the time she awoke Fluttershy was making breakfast, typically oatmeal, a warm and filing meal that started the day right. Trixie would take her mornings easy, still recuperating. She had gotten her books back from Twilight, and would review them, often in the garden if the weather held. She would then usually accompany Fluttershy into town in the afternoon, having lunch with her or just taking the chance to stretch her legs. She began to fill out little by little, her coat gleamed once more, and she regained her former energy. Only one thing stood between her and true health. That was why, nearly a week since her first visit, Trixie found herself in the Ponyville library again, Twilight Sparkle staring at her.
"Absolutely no magic?"
"None at all." Trixie shook her head. Twilight frowned.
"What happens if you try?"
Trixie shuddered. "Nausea. Trixie would rather leave it at tha

Trixie made her way down the stairs unsteadily the next morning, feeling rested but hungry. She realized as she walked down that she was being watched. Looking around, she found a white rabbit standing on a small end table, glaring at her. It made her feel unwelcome, but Trixie just glared back at it.
"Do not mess with Trixie, rabbit, or she may make you part of her next routine."
The rabbit did not look amused. A noise distracted her, and Trixie looked up to realize the birdhouses hanging from the ceiling were occupied, small sparrows talking to one another from their houses.
"What kind of house is this?" Trixie just stared on. Another bird emerged from a larger house. It was a robin that began to whistle a tune. To Trixie's surprise, a silky voice sang back, wordlessly, in perfect key.
"Good morning- oh, Trixie!" Fluttershy entered the room from the kitchen. Trixie realized she had a light blush on her face and immediately scolded herself. Why was she blushing?

The next morning, Fluttershy and Trixie shared a breakfast of oatmeal again. Trixie found it easier to get around and ate almost an entire bowlful. She realized most of her original wounds were healing nicely, and while her side was tender it wasn't painful to move, usually.
"The others will want to know you're up." Fluttershy said. Trixie glanced down at the floor.
"Will they really care?"
"They're my friends too." Fluttershy responded. Trixie nodded, understanding what she meant.
"Shall we... go out?" Trixie asked. Fluttershy paused.
"Are you...are you sure? They could come..."
"Trixie has healed excellently under such adept care." she smiled at Fluttershy, who blushed slightly in response. "Besides," Trixie said softly, "she promises not to exert herself. She doesn't want to spend a single day more bedridden."
"Okay. A day out would be...nice." Fluttershy smiled. Trixie nodded and waited as Fluttershy cleaned up breakfast. They made their way to the door. That same rabbit

Trixie awoke slowly, feeling an odd peace about her that she hadn't felt in a long, long time. Her entire body tingled pleasantly, her muscles were entirely relaxed, and she found a smile on her face. She stretched a little and opened her eyes.
Almost immediately her mood fouled. There was less light than last time, but she could still make out the same yellow ceiling as before. She quickly remembered where she was and why. That pegasus, she had... tricked Trixie. Tricked her into accepting food and aid, Trixie realized. She wasn't sure what exactly the pegasus had done wrong. But the indignity of it infuriated her.
Trixie looked herself over and gasped slightly. Her body was more bandages than not, her legs entirely covered and several pads held to her sides with medical tape. She realized her muscles were relaxed thank to several damp clothes placed around her shoulders and hips. She shook them off and immediately regretted it, yelping as her bandages rubbed and made her aw

"Good evening." Luna greeted Twilight as the young unicorn stepped onto the same balcony as the princess. It had been just beyond their rooms, facing slightly off of south, giving a few of the city below. Canterlot had not fallen asleep yet; carts traveled to their final destinations of the day, couples went about for dinner, shopkeeps began to close up for home. Twilight bowed her head in greetings as she stepped out.
"Celly dotes on me so, it's a little embarrassing." Luna looked past Twilight to the two guards nearby. Twilight gave a nervous smile. She wondered - was this Celestia trying to protect her younger sister, or protect others from her little sister?
"How are you feeling?" she asked to shift the conversation. So far, Luna, while soft-spoken, didn't seem so poorly. Her opinion shifted slightly when Luna hung her head and let out a long sigh.

Luna ended with a huff. "Though to be honest I've spent more time amongst ponies today than... well, for significantly more than a thousand years, I'll tell you. I wasn't expecting this bustle, it's enough to wear on one's patience."
"But, what if we went back to Ponyville? It's so much quieter there, and, couldn't you explore there?" Fluttershy offered. Lun

"Wha- Oh, Spike!" Twilight was surprised to find her assistant crossly tapping his foot outside the door. He came in without her invitation.
"Where were you, Twi?" he asked, clearly indignant. "You were gone for hours! Do you know how hard it is to keep a straight face when you're lying to the Princess of Equestria?"
"One of." Twilight corrected. "And sadly, yes. I'm sorry Spike." gears turned in her head. She couldn't have spent more than an hour and a half searching for books, probably less. "I must, Twilight. We shall stand strong together." Luna stepped out of the door.
Meanwhile, in the Ponyville Library, a piece of paper came from nowhere and floated gingerly down onto the face of a pegasus sleeping on the library floor. The pegasus, still asleep, tried to blow the paper off of her.

One very illuminating lesson on abacus use and maintenance and several hours of peaceful study later, Twilight and Luna left the library. For the first time in a very, very long time Twilight felt, well, stupid. She often felt foalish, out of place or embarrassed. She had never been made to feel stupid.
Luna had meant only to show off a little though, and Twilight held nothing against her. The younger princess had little enough to be proud of as it was. And that little display had helped the Princess make several insights to current tax regulations. Twilight was honored that the Princess had turned to her several times through the night, using her to clarify what the books could not. And she had gotten her ow

They seemed to have personal knowledge of the castle and the construction and supposed contents within. It did not take Spike long to realize who the most likely culprits of this caper was, it had to have been one of princesses of Equestria. “But why would any princess be stalking around the ancient castle and worrying about missing objects?” Spike thought. “Do they not have important duties to take care of in Canterlot? The wind drove them, beat them against the structures with a rattling rhythm that sent those within closer to the heat of their fires and deeper into the warming embraces of their loved ones.
For some, there was no such respite.
Out in the market square the sleeting drizzle was parted by something unseen, and as a pale blue filament of light wrapped around within itself it suddenly exploded outwards in an orb of illumination that revealed the outlines of two figures.

As he worked at his wings, forcing the melting sleet from the down, he kept one ear and one eye on the figures of Twilight and Spike. They moved about wordlessly, slowly putting the wet scarves across the hearth, the sound of their hooves and clawed feet sounding out above the crackling of the fire.
The owl looked at Twilight, saw her looking at Spike with a distant, worried contemplation. He spun his head to look at Spike, saw him avoiding her gaze, moving sheepishly.
An understanding flew through the bird, and he slowly but certainly hid his face from their view and attempted to doze. In that moment the bird was very happy for his Equestrian animal intellect that he was smart enough to understand, comprehend, even if he was unable to articulate.
At least, the owl realized, that meant that he didn't have to give the baby dragon The Talk.

This tells other ships that the afflicted craft is under the command of a junior officer, someone who may not have all of the experience needed to properly handle a ship on the water.

The streets were pleasantly quiet and Luna relished the peace. Vendors were packing away their goods and closing shop for the day and everypony was making the slow, lazy trip home from wherever their day had taken them. The setting sun turned their shadows into tall, majestic creatures that roamed the streets with elongated strides that carried them a few graceful inches before halting. Luna was too busy admiring them to notice the ponies
Luna's Best Night Ever: 7The front door was locked and Luna felt awkward standing there in the long silence between knocking and Twilight finally opening the door. Luna ached all over and smelled vaguely of sweat, blood and dirt. She could still feel the chill along her horn from the black fire, and although she supposed it was keeping a splitting headache from forming it was uncomfortable in its own way. She smoothed out her mane and tail as best she could and was in the process of wiping her horn down a second time when the handle turned.Luna's Best Night Ever: 7 in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
"Welcome back, Luna."
Twilight was absolutely beaming and Luna momentarily forgot where her hoof was rubbing until Twilight's cheeks began to turn pink, then light red. Luna's face lit up scarlet as she released her horn and her hoof made an audible thud as it struck the ground. Both of them attempted smiles that did little to make the situation any less embarrassing for either of them. The silence dragged on and Twilight gave a small cough. Luna faltered for a moment befor
Luna's Best Night Ever 9Sleep always felt strange to Luna. It was like willingly entering a void, shutting out the world and entering a place where only she existed. Other ponies dreamed when night came, but often Luna felt like the hours she spent awake were the dream and the time she spent asleep was the cold reality, crushing loneliness mixed with a pleasant sense of calm and ease. It was a sensation she had grown used to during her imprisonment, albeit not by choice.Luna's Best Night Ever 9 in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
She opened her eyes lazily and yawned, hoof reflexively covering her mouth to politely conceal the action. One by one her senses sharpened and her connection to the waking world returned. The stars had progressed of their own volition and she took a deep breath, tracing their paths to work out how far along they were. Her eyes widened at the realization that hours, not just one or two, had passed since she had begun her nap. She hopped off of the couch and ran to the window. The cold light of morning was already beginning to tinge the horizon
Luna's Best Night Ever: 3Luna pulled the last of the confetti from her mane and tail. She sighed and tossed it over the side of the chariot, watching the colorful paper drift away. Celestia had given her a proper sending off, complete with banners saying things like "Do your best!" and "Go, Luna, go!" Luna wondered whether her sister was using her pranks and outrageousness as a coping mechanism or a punishment. Possibly both, she mused, a hoof resting on the suitcase where her own coping mechanism lay. She had insisted that Abby's suitcase remain by her side for the duration of the trip and managed to keep even Celly from seeing inside it.Luna's Best Night Ever: 3 in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
It was somewhat saddening to think about for too long at once and Luna attempted to distract herself with mental games. She counted the clouds and imagined what object their shapes represented. Surely there was an artist among the weather patrol, because each fluffy lump of white was carefully sculpted into a delicate floral arrangement. The trails of vapor connecting each o
Luna's Best Night Ever: 4The punch was cool and refreshing, if a little bland. Luna sipped it slowly and watched the other ponies at the party as they chatted and played. The music, some new style called "pop" that she had never heard of, was playing loudly and served as the backdrop for the event. The cheerful melodies reflected the happiness that everypony else was feeling. Luna finished her glass and refilled it for the third time, taking another bite from one of the cupcakes forming a neat stack on her plate. They were much too sweet for her taste but she continued to eat them in small, refined nibbles.Luna's Best Night Ever: 4 in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
The moment everypony had seen her enter Luna's instincts told her to run. Instead the sudden shock of being in the spotlight had frozen her in place, sitting on the floor and unable to budge.
"Luna? Are you OK?"
She needed a way to escape the situation or shift focus away from her. Her mind searched for answers while her eyes scanned the room.
"Is something wrong? Oh! I didn't ask if you have a heart cond
Worth Suffering ForThe night air was brisk to say the least, and Rarity would have much preferred to be inside and out of the harsh chill. It definitely wasn't something she delighted in. Harsher still, though, was the expression on Sweetie Belle's face, and the glare with which she had looked at Rarity after her failed attempt to reconcile. Rarity watched, shocked, as Applebloom and Sweetie Belle walked away, their forms receding from the campfire and fading into the darkness of the woods. She hesitated for a moment and sighed softly, glancing at Applejack. She took a few steps towards her, trying to keep her voice low enough that the fillies wouldn't overhear.Worth Suffering For in Short Stories More Like This
"Well, that apology went swimmingly. Applejack, why do you have to be so good and make me look so bad?"
Applejack chuckled and gestured to the unicorn.
"Oh Rarity, once again you're thinkin' about yourself. Bein' sisters is a give and take. You've been doin' a whole lotta takin', but you haven't been doin' a whole lotta givin'."
Rarity thought fo
Luna's Best Night Ever: SS1The walk back to Sweet Apple Acres was usually a long one, but Applejack barely noticed the time pass by as she walked. The path seemed to meld together into a single, drawn out moment and she didn't remember each step as she took it. Her mind was somewhere else entirely, wondering where Rainbow Dash had flown off to after the party. Not only had she disregarded everypony's concern by not staying in bed and resting, but she hadn't stuck around at the party to at least say hello to her friends.Luna's Best Night Ever: SS1 in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
Applejack adjusted her hat a little and looked up at the sky. The clouds were sculpted into roses and the afternoon glow made them look golden, but there wasn't a trace of a rainbow trail or blue blur to indicate where the pegasus might be. She kicked a stone and watched it skitter along the path before bouncing into a ditch and sighed.
It was bad enough that Rainbow Dash never seemed to care when she got hurt. Every bump, scrape and bruise got shaken off like it was nothing, even when everypony
Luna's Best Night Ever: 2The hallways were always empty right after the sunrise, with ponies scurrying about in their rooms preparing for the day ahead or climbing into their beds after a long shift attending to the princess of the night. It was the only time Luna felt comfortable walking by herself in the castle halls, and the only time she wore her dressing gown. It was warm and comfortable to wear during the cold morning hours, but she felt it indecent to be caught wearing it by anyone besides Celly. And Celly had called it adorable before ruffling her mane the last time she had seen her in it.Luna's Best Night Ever: 2 in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
She saw something moving out of the corner of her eye and turned to look. A statue, little more than a stone bust of a famous colt on a pedestal. Luna moved carefully over to the bust, inspecting it. There was another quick motion from behind it and Luna chased after it, nearly crashing into the attendant who had been hiding there. Both squeaked as they toppled over and fell to the floor. Luna rubbed her head as she
Luna's Best Night Ever 11The first thing that Luna noticed about Fluttershy, besides her extreme shyness and delicate nature, was her bedside manner. The moment she had been filled in on what had happened she had asked to be moved next to where Twilight was to assist in binding her wound and examining the damage. Luna had honestly expected her to be more squeamish, but she supposed that spending all her free time serving as a caretaker for animals had exposed her to many unsavory things, and her overflowing concern for her friend likely blinded the pegasus to the grotesque nature of their work.Luna's Best Night Ever 11 in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
Nightmare Moon had, thankfully, missed Twilight's heart, but the wound was deep and had more than likely punctured a lung. Luna tried casting a simple healing spell to stop the bleeding, but her horn ached too much to focus properly. Once they were certain Twilight could be moved safely Applejack carefully lifted Twilight onto Luna's back to take her to the hospital, before scooping Fluttershy up to do the same, and wit
