Song of the PhoenixXao Zhou Xi crept furtively into the audience chamber where his mother waited, wings quivering with nerves as the heavy doors swung closed behind him. A summons from Lady Xao was easily the most frightening thing the young Tsing could imagine; the matriarch was by no means unpredictable, but the slaves who carried the summons were never privileged to know the reason and one never knew what the Lady had or hadn't noticed and what she made of it. One never knew whether one would be praised or punished. She knew what he was trying to do - if she looked at the sad-sacked, disheveled, too-thin ponies longer than necessary her resolve would crack.
Letting them lie on the beds they'd made was the right thing to do. Couldn't Big Mac see that?
Her brother, always a pony of few words, simply looked at her again and she scowled.

Instead of Mochi she found Baymax, sorting gummy bears into a dish one-by-one, and like her he was so focused on the matter it was a moment before he straightened and turned to her.
"Hello, Aunt Cass."
He raised a hand in greeting; she returned the gesture and stepped closer as the robot went back to his task.

Hiro watched Baymax retreat into his casing and glanced at the clock. Ten minutes, fifteen tops until the robot was good as new - enough time for a little reading. He peered into his backpack to survey what he had; after considering and dismissing a literature textbook he retrieved a thick graphic novel instead and settled with his back to the case, barely looking up as bouncing footsteps entered the lab.
"Hiro! Thought you might be here!" Fred trotted up with a merry wave, and Hiro shifted to look up at him with a welcoming nod. "How go the repairs?" He eyed the case a moment and frowned. "He's stashed... everything okay?"
"Yeah, yeah. He's fine." Hiro shrugged a little. "Couple of fried servos - enough went into the replacement that his system needs to read and realign for the new ones. It'll go faster if he's in standby for it."
Fred nodded wisely, relaxing.

Truth be told, she wasn't sleeping much herself.
Oh, she went through the motions all right; she put forth her cheerful customer-service demeanor at the cafe, she went about normal Aunt Cass business with a normal Aunt Cass smile plastered on her face, she sent Hiro to bed at eleven as she had for several years, and they both pretended he was actually going to sleep as they had for years, and once she was done with the day's accounting she made a clattering try-to-be-quiet show of going to bed herself.
Most night she cried until either sleep came or she was too tired for sleep or tears; sometimes - less often than she would have thought - she heard Hiro do the same. The first few times she'd gotten up and gone to him, but her tears only seemed to upset him more; a few nights of this and she instead tried for the Normal Aunt Cass facade.
She didn't want to worry him, and he cried less, but he slept less too.

Abigail hoped it was at least a little of the first - that was familiar, and could be teased to amusement if she pushed the right buttons, and a little normalcy would do them both a lot of good.
She stepped forward, raising a hand to wave.
He was up immediately as she approached, moving to help her into a chair. She waved him off; not even Baymax was allowed to help her until she actually reached out for it and Krei could damn well learn to wait for that signal too no matter how remorseful or unsettled or whatever he was. He hovered nearby a moment, at a loss, before finally returning to his seat as she settled in.

Vanellope had felt a strange sense of pride at that - that the other racers were picking up on her ideas, and genuinely trying to make newcomers feel welcome instead of isolating them.
Such a change from the past fifteen years. Somehow, that contentment made the reminders that Drift - and the fact of the other racers being shut out - presented all the more unsettling.

Sharp, jagged walls that cut into my flesh, that ripped into my soul
Closing in, but I kept falling.
He was still here, though he didnt talk and he didnt seem hurt by the walls:
At least I wasnt alone.
Then there was light, and I realized that sometimes he was gone.
I hadnt noticed in the dark, but I was very much alone.
I tried to tell him, but he simply smiled, and kept being away
And so I fell alone and missed him while he was gone,
But he didnt notice when he came back
Why? didnt he miss me too?
I fell for a long time, so long that the pain of being alone
became just another jagged edge that I crashed against,
Only this time I knew what it was before I hit it.

"Everyone take a seat - put your phones away. I'm not gonna have you guys fucking off, alright? You pay good money for this course and I'm not about to watch you piss it out the window." Professor Vichter crossed his arms at the front of the class, clicking his tongue and hitting the tip of his tail across the floor. He peered out of his headdress, eyes narrowed as he looked over his students - only eight in number. Good; enough people to keep his eyes on. He waited for people to have their notebooks out before he pulled down the overhead and turned on the projector, getting the thing warmed up as it pulled up the course.
"My name is Professor Vichter. There's only so many of you, so you can call me Levi." He commented, clearing his throat as he waited for the screen to be legible. "I was born in 2563 and

these woods for long enough to be able to hear the small differences in
the atmosphere of the area. She stopped walking suddenly and perked her
ears up to be able to focus on the sound. From what she could make out,
it sounded like breathing. Prim found this peculiar, and tried to
figure out if the thing making this noise was sentient or not. "Hello?
Is someone there? If you are here on good terms, you have nothing to
fear", she called out to the darkness.
Hearing that was nothing short of reassuring - a head poked out from
behind a tree, then another somewhat lower and somewhat smaller. From
what Prim would be able to make out the faces were that of two Equina - a
large female and presumably her foal. The female elder stepped out from
behind the tree somewhat cautiously, smiling to disarm Prim if her

Laviaen RiakiHaving a thief in a library wasn't only new, but it was something Lania Luna wasn't prepared for; at first it was little things missing, like magazines, then cushions off of the chairs... It got to the point Lania had to begin taking inventory on just about everything in order to report the missing objects to her superiors, though once actual books started to go missing at long last it became apparent this wasn't something she could do on her own.Laviaen Riaki in Short Stories More Like This
Luckily the local trade branch of the Coalition was stationed nearby, and even luckier still there were agents to answer her request. Rookie agents, but agents no less, and once they learned the job was in a library, only one agent was still 'available', conveniently. His name was Kensith Riaki, a greenhorn agent who had completed his training but was still too naive to actually be put on a serious job for the Coalition, so he was put in charge of petty crimes in the area.
"So someone is stealing books?" Kensith arrived in the library only an

"We need to get to my home for now." She was released yesterday from the Saklar hospital she had been sent to, but due to a rather violent spat with a nurse she found herself having to wait another day for observation, growing notably calmer when Acantha returned from her rounds in the recovery effort; things were clearing up, giving her the ability to call her shift off to personally tend to Celia - to give her the attention she needed in such a state was a one person job, but said one person needed much time. "We'll go back to the hospital bi-weekly for shell examinations, skin tests, the usual, okay?"
Celia was quiet beyond that blonde hair in her face, the limbs of her shell bore down over her protectively, her arm reached out with the arm of her shell hovering over it, in case her caretaker tried any

Princess Celestia looked down at the unicorn in front of her. She had dealt with this unicorn before, and could only remember one time when doing so had ever turned out badly.
Even then, it hadn't really been the unicorn's fault -- Grand Galloping Galas never turned out well. It was a known issue that Celestia was still looking into how to fix.
"More than sure." Rarity looked back up to Celestia with a determined yet content expression. "Remember, Princess, we are ever in your service. And by 'your', I naturally mean all of the Canterlot royal house. Indeed, I am beyond honored that you are even considering my offer."
The two ponies walked, with Celestia leading Rarity down several of Canterlot Castle's hallways. "Honestly, when Twilight told me of it, I was at first quite surprised. Then I thought about it, and it did not take me long to understand." She stopped and looked back at Rarity. "Given past events, you certainly have y

Even after all these years, Cadance's words echoed in Princess Celestia's mind as she rounded the hallway leading to the room where Twilight slept. Though torches along the walls lit the way, she used her horn to do the same. She always just felt better using her own light.
"You've lived with such anguish for centuries! Right now she thinks she's the only pony in the world with the capacity to mess up. You're the perfect pony to prove otherwise!"
She stopped a short distance from the room and took several deep breaths.
"You're her mentor. Her hero. Please, go see her. Bring her back."
A voice -- this time from much closer -- cut into her reverie. "Well, well. I never thought I'd ever seen the great Princess Celestia this visibly nervous."

She'd raced the Sugar Rush Speedways countless times, and knew them like the back of her hand.
She held the fastest lap times on Sherbet Road--a narrow, guardless track suspended dozens of feet in the air. She'd done downhills on the near-vertical Peppermint Pattycake Plains. She'd once carved a shortcut through Gobstopper Valley to regain first place in a race. She'd even skimmed the sides of Smoothie Swirlpool, and lived to rub it in everyone's faces. Taffyta Muttonfudge was not one to show fear, no matter what danger she happened to be staring down.
That did not mean, however, that she was incapable of feeling it. She would never admit it, but the tiniest bit tugged at her right now as she was escorted into Sugar Rush's royal castle by two walking gumdrop guards, both of whom were armed with candy-cane spears.

Twilight Sparkle and Shining Armor rode high amongst the clouds overlooking Canterlot Castle in the former's balloon. The dim lights of an ever-slowing wedding reception could still be seen below.
The main festivities were long past. However, some ponies were clearly determined to make the party last until it was time for Princess Celestia to raise the sun once more. Strains of slow music and the faint scent of baked desserts wafted up to their perch. The latter prompted Twilight to magically transport two slices of cake and two glasses of punch from terra firma. A bright pink dot darted all over the courtyard in response.
She shook her head at the sight and smiled, pushing the events of minutes prior to the back of her mind. "Well, I have to admit, I arranged this for the nostalgia factor. It's been a while since I took my balloon into Canterlot skies. And e

The voice echoed throughout the palace, accompanying the sounds of the thunderstorm pelting outside Candy Castle's walls, the yells of aggressive drivers, and the simultaneous roar of the engines of nearly every single Sugar Rush kart ever assembled.
The karts crashed through the castle, knocking everything over in their path, and launching weapons which crackled, splashed, squashed and even exploded through the halls. It was a scene of true havoc, and all but two Rushers were in on it.
One of those two raced against the pack, launching every weapon she could at the others. The second was taking refuge in her room, desperately trying to make sense of everything and get a plan together before... well, before she was captured, or worse.

I could not speak your name or place the curve of your smile, but instantly I recognized you. We walked that beach a hundred times in a hundred dreams and never once did I see your face. Physically I knew you only as a man of some substance, taller than I so that I had to look upward slightly to see the face
