Rise of the Shadow Dragon: Chapter 5
The Holy Lands
"What are you looking at?" I peered over Kair's shoulder as she carefully leafed through an old picture book. It was a children's book, telling the story of a legendary Master and his battle with an unknown Dragon that threatened Blackthorn city many generations ago. As was everything else in the temple library, it was written in dragon script.
"I had this book as a child." She smiled to herself. "I had difficultly reading the script but I would look at the pictures before going to sleep. Then I turned five and Sa'lu took away my picture books."
"A little restrictive."
"Yes, well I didn't have time for fantasy when I had training to do," Kair replied as-a-matter-of-factly as she gently ran a finger through the centre page. The paper was dog-eared and well worn, but the picture of the Dragon Master was still very clear. With his Dragonite to his side, he stood tall and valiant, holding in his hand a fang. He wore a tunic

Kings and Sages
Four Months later
The great ceremony hall was full of yellow and orange light that streamed in through stained glass windows. It was unusually warm despite the vastness of the chamber and its cold, stone floor and walls. Perhaps it was all the bodies. Figures dressed in formal, medieval inspired attire stood in carefully arranged lines, observing the ceremony in silence.
All eyes watched the youth in official garb who carefully sat in a chair twice the size of his scrawny body. A golden crown precariously balanced on his bushel of tea-green hair. He was perhaps fifteen or twenty, legendaries knew, Sa'lu had long forgotten his age.
"Let me present to you our future . Our King." The man who stood to his side, an older version of the boy, announced to the audience and in turn, the boy stood up, his arm rising and figuratively accepting his new role as regent king.
At that moment everyone in the room dropped into a simult

The days following consisted of vigorous training and challenging other trainers to strengthen her Pokémon's skill and strength. But Jarica wasn't faring well. She hadn't won a single battle since the very first one, and her Pokémon were beginning to sense her doubt. She slumped down into the grass after a particularly rough battle that she had lost quickly, even though she'd had the advantage. Maybe I'm not cut out for this sort of thing. She looked up at the sun, blazing brightly overhead. Are my Pokémon just not strong enough...? Or am I the problem? Maybe I should just go home, and forget I ever tried... But when she looked at her Pokémon staring uncertainly back at her, she knew they were trying their best. Why am I so bad at this? She thought angrily. My grandfather and Flannery are great trainers! After all these years of hearing him lecture her on how to battle and raise her Pokémon, why can't I do the same?!

A few days had gone by. A memorial had already been held for Mr. Moore, and while Flannery was busy with her gym duties and organizing Grandfather's things according to his short will, Jarica was gathering everything she thought she'd need for a journey. By sundown she had everything ready.
Flannery made a call to Pokémon Professor Birch, and notified him that Jarica was going to become a trainer this year. He assured them that there would be plenty of starter pokemon shipped in just in time for the new wave of trainers to choose. Normally Jarica would have simply gone to the Lavaridge Pokemon Center to pick up her starter, as any other trainer might have. However, Birch had mentioned that if Jarica ever made the choice, she should go to his lab where he had some other things to give her, in addition to the starter.
Every year on a designated date in April, new trainers were permitted to go to Birch's lab in New Bark town or a Pokemon Center in their own town, to resister as an off

"Use Stomp!" NightMare reacted immediately but the phoenix bird was faster, and dodged the hit by taking to the air. It hung suspended there a moment before making a direct vertical dive towards NightMare, which gained speed quickly. Jarica's heart sunk when she recognized the move as Fly. The fiery bird was faster than NightMare; there was no way the horse could avoid it in time. Jarica thought back to the zigzagoon that had gotten away. I've got it! "Hold your ground!" She called to the ponyta. It looked a bit uncertain but did as told, to Jarica's surprise. She's listening to me! NightMare is listening to me!! Finally when the time was right, Jarica yelled another command "Now leap and use Take Down!" NightMare's strong legs sprung her into the air right above the passing Moltres and the horse crashed back down on the bird with all her weight. 'Yes!' Hope flared in Jarica. But Moltres struggled free easily and let out a rage filled shriek. NightMa

The following week they reached the next town where they could rest and restock. Jarica spied the red roof of a center and started toward it; Her Pokemon were exhausted and she was hungry. 'I can't wait to eat!' She thought, walking through the automatic glass doors.
The center looked mildly busy. Trainers spoke excitedly to each other about their Pokemon and the badges they had won. Jarica made her way to the front desk and rang the bell. A Nurse Joy came from a back room, her face cheerful as usual. She greeted Jarica and placed a tray in front of her, with six indentations, like an egg carton. Jarica deposited her pokeballs and Nurse Joy took them away to a machine where the pokemon's none-serious wounds would be healed. Jarica waited patiently. Nurse Joy was back shortly, and handed the tray back to Jarica. The trainer reattached the pokeballs to her belt and thanked the pokemon nurse, bowing respectfully.
Jarica moved out of the way and sat down on an empty bench by a wall.

Jarica dashed to the PokeMart, and bought a few Pokeballs to catch wild Pokémon, as well as some other items to help them on their way.
With no further ado, she started towards the nearest route that would take her to the nearest gym, training Ruby as she went. Here and there she met another trainer, but out of the many she challenged, she only beat the first. Disheartened, she decided to take a break and catch some more Pokémon.
By the end of the day she had a Taillow, a flying type, a Zubat, a flying and poison type, as well as a Raltz, an uncommon psychic type. She'd named the Taillow "Svell", and the zubat "Zu-Zu", but hadn't thought of a name for the Raltz yet.
She looked up at the sky. The sun was getting closer to the horizon, and the air was getting colder as dusk grew. She knew her Pokemon were tired, and she couldn't deny th
